Experience: I was stung by one of the deadliest creatures on Earth

I moved to Sydney, Australia, after finishing my master’s degree at Nottingham University. I was winging it: I just turned up with a suitcase. I got a couple of jobs, in internet marketing and as a private tutor, and met an Australian woman, Chloe. About a year after I arrived, I was off work on a beautiful summer’s day and fancied some peace and quiet, away from all the tourists who flock to Bondi. Chloe had told me about Gordons Bay, a small, secluded beach nearby, and I was looking forward to listening to music, reading and relaxing.

There was hardly anybody there and I settled on some large rocks to sunbathe. It was postcard perfect: serene, azure sky and a calm, green sea. It was the hottest part of the day and, after reading for a while, I decided to cool off and jumped into the water. It was warm and I remember feeling happy. I swam away from the rocks and kicked back to float, looking at the sky. That’s when the pain struck.

My first thought was that a shark had taken my right leg. I didn’t know what was happening, but I knew I was in danger. I expected to see my blood billowing around me in the water, but there was nothing. This magnified my panic; I didn’t know what was causing the pain or which direction to swim to avoid it.

My heart was racing and every one of my muscles tensed, then went into spasm. I was in blinding pain all over. I lost the ability to speak or think. My internal voice had stopped. I could barely breathe. I believed I was going to die.

I tried to swim, but felt very tired. I thought that if I went to sleep, it would all be easier when I woke up. But I went into autopilot and somehow managed to get myself to the rocks. There were thin red lines across my right shin that looked as if they’d been drawn with a pen.

A scuba diver ran over. He said he’d seen box jellyfish in the area. I wouldn’t have been able to see them in the water. I didn’t know then that they are one of the deadliest creatures on Earth. Their tentacles pump venom into the skin that attacks blood cells and can lead to cardiac arrest. He told me I’d been stung by one and needed to get to hospital immediately.

All my conscious decision-making facilities had left me, and I wasn’t able to process what he said. I walked away. He called after me, but my only instinct was to get home. The next thing I knew, I was in my apartment with a bag of peas on my leg.

I still don’t understand the sequence of events. I lay down, and for an eternity I didn’t move. I didn’t feel like I’d been awake or asleep. I couldn’t think of what to do or how to communicate. I was a prisoner in my own body.

Related: Experience: IVF gave me a heart attack

After a day or two, the poison began subsiding. My foot had swollen massively – my little toe was the size of a big toe. Those thin red lines had started corroding, and the poison had eaten away at my skin, revealing the muscle and bone underneath. It looked as if someone had taken a jagged axe and tried to chop off my foot. I managed to call Chloe and show her. The next thing I knew, we were on our way to hospital.

The doctor asked why I hadn’t come in sooner. I tried to explain. I asked if there was anything he could do, but he said the toxins had gone through my system: there was nothing they could do except clean the wound. He told me I was lucky the jellyfish had stung me on my leg; if it had been on my chest, I would not have made it.

I left Australia pretty quickly after that. I have a scar, still walk with a limp and have pain in my hip. I wonder about the long-term effect on my brain and body as a result of the toxins, but there’s very little data on this. I think my delay in getting treatment was down to the shock.

Chloe and I are still friends, although the relationship didn’t work out. I now run a startup in Silicon Valley. Sometimes I think about setting up a box jellyfish survivors’ group – Indigenous Australians say that you inhabit the power of any animal that stings you. That makes us pretty indestructible.

Mental illness has an effect on us all even in the happiest nation on Earth | Daniel and Jason Freeman

Which is the happiest nation on the planet? Followers of The Killing might be stunned to find out that it is Denmark. Nordic noir gives us a claustrophobic country shrouded in fog and lashed by icy rain, stalked by serial killers and riddled with corruption: a land from which noble souls this kind of as Sarah Lund are compelled to flee, in no way – sadly – to be observed again.

In stark contrast, the Planet Happiness Report 2013, written by major academics, finds that ranges of self-reported happiness are larger in Denmark than anyplace else, with fellow Scandinavian nations Norway and Sweden also in the leading five. The United kingdom is 22nd and the US 17th. The lowest ranked nations – out of 156 – are Rwanda, Burundi, the Central African Republic, Benin, and final of all Togo.

Why are the Danish so content? The Planet Happiness Report cites variables this kind of as wholesome daily life expectancy, GDP per capita, amounts of social help, freedom to make daily life selections, perceptions of corruption, and the degree of generosity shown by citizens. Other professionals have highlighted Denmark’s high degree of revenue equality: this is a nation, it appears, in which individuals genuinely are “in it with each other”.

Provided that amounts of happiness are so high in Denmark, it is reasonable to assume that Danes also appreciate excellent mental health. But a examine published this month by the American Health care Association tells a quite different story – one that demonstrates just how common mental health troubles are, irrespective of in which individuals come about to reside.

One particular of the a lot of constructive factors of life in Denmark is its universal health care technique. As component of that technique, treatment method for mental sickness is recorded in the Danish Psychiatric Investigation Register: a resource that supplies scientists with a treasure trove of information. Considering that 1969, for every single particular person living in Denmark the register has logged admissions to psychiatric hospitals, visits to outpatient psychiatric clinics, attendance at psychiatric emergency departments, and all diagnoses. As such, it gives a extensive and uniquely thorough picture of treatment method for psychological issues in the nation.

On the basis of the register’s data, researchers estimated that 38% of Danish females and 32% of Danish men will get therapy for a psychological disorder at some stage throughout their lifetime. Keep in mind: these statistics only contain cases serious enough for skilled support to be required. Of program, there are likely to be numerous more individuals with psychological overall health problems who for one cause or yet another will not seek out treatment. This is why representative epidemiological surveys usually create even increased estimates for mental sick well being than the Danish examine. But for all these who criticise such surveys for which includes troubles that are mild or transient, this most current investigation constitutes a forceful riposte. Psychological illness is not a figment of more than-eager clinicians’ imagination the problem is actual and widespread.

The Danish outcomes have fascinating particulars. As we have noted in a earlier write-up for this site women are much more likely than males to build a psychological wellness issue, and this pattern is definitely evident in Denmark. We also see the classic dichotomy in the kinds of psychological overall health problem skilled by men and women. When it comes to so-known as “internalising” conditions, costs for Danish girls are increased than for Danish guys: for anxiety issues 19% of ladies will get treatment method in contrast with 13% of males for depression the figures are 16% and 9% respectively. Men, on the other hand, are much more vulnerable to “externalising” problems: in Denmark 8% of males will acquire treatment method for alcohol or drug troubles, twice the figure for women.

Consuming problems this kind of as anorexia nervosa and bulimia are a lot far more prevalent amongst females (three%) than males (.2%). Boys, however, display greater costs than ladies of issues in early childhood such as autism (.9%, .two%) and finding out disabilities (one.eight%, one.two%).

The Danish review also gives us a extremely clear sense of when psychological wellness issues have a tendency to come up. For both sexes and for most situations, it usually manifests in the course of adolescence and early adulthood. The statistics show a significant improve in circumstances from ages ten to twenty, a peak in the early 20s, and then a steady lessen with age. Mood disorders such as depression, nonetheless, become much more prevalent again right after the age of 65, and an additional clear exception to this pattern are natural troubles this kind of as dementia, for which charges rise significantly from the age of about 70 (the lifetime danger of natural mental health troubles in Denmark was 12% for females and 9% for guys).

There is no reason to believe that the Danish statistics are anomalous. Nicely-run, scientifically credible epidemiological surveys propose that each and every year 38% of individuals living in the EU knowledge psychological illness, with anxiety ailments the most commonly seasoned dilemma. That equates to 165 million people. But fewer than a third of these individuals acquire any form of therapy, with even fewer offered the most efficient types of intervention. The scale of distress to which these figures attest is cause adequate for action. But policymakers may also get on board the fact that psychological difficulties are estimated to cost the EU €800bn annually.

Correct now the United kingdom is marking Psychological Health Awareness Week. In the light of this timely reminder of how frequent psychological illness is – even in the happiest countries – the stigma still connected to these problems is exceptional. Rather significantly everybody can assume either to encounter a problem themselves or to know a person who has, and nevertheless 9 out of 10 folks employing mental overall health services in England report encountering discrimination as a consequence, with considerably of that hostility coming from family members and buddies.

As a society, it is substantial time we faced up to the fact that psychological sickness is just as regimen as physical sickness (and assuredly no a lot more shameful), and offered the higher-top quality, timely care that these circumstances require.

4 Methods To Consume Far better Whilst Celebrating The Earth

More than forty many years ago Earth Day helped galvanize a well-known professional-atmosphere movement.

Yet right now, the amount and scope of environmental difficulties feels overpowering.  Aside from celebrating Earth Day, it does not seem there is much we can do to make factors better.

But maybe we can begin by eating.

Of all our daily human pursuits, what we eat has maybe the largest direct effect on the atmosphere.  Agriculture utilizes an estimated 70 % of international freshwater to develop our foods, and in the U.S., 22 percent of all our energy use is gobbled up by the meals technique.

So how to genuinely eat better and influence the environment?

Below are 4 critical concepts to take with you next time you check out the grocery shop.

1. Most of your food’s ‘carbon footprint’ does not come from being grown far away.

A typical myth is that the meals system uses so much fossil fuel since we ship foods close to the globe.  And although it plainly will take energy to transport food, the truth is that our addiction to “convenience foods” utilizes far much more.

From the generating of fertilizer to the operating your fridge, the foods system employs an tremendous sum of energy.  But according to the USDA, at no level do we use more of it than in our quite very own homes. Whilst per capita energy use in the United States dropped nearly 2 %, our food-associated per capita vitality use increased more than 16 %.

Between 1965 and 1995 the time Americans spent cooking at home dropped from 65 to 31 minutes a day, and nowadays only slightly more than half the population reviews cooking on a every day basis.

And while not turning on the stove sounds like a excellent way to lower back on the energy bill, it also means you are getting products which require far a lot more processing and packaging then any of us would ever do at property.

Not only are most of individuals quick and packaged food items higher in sugar and decrease on nutrients. They are also wasting beneficial energy resources.

two. ‘Conventional’ foods utilizes far a lot more vitality then organic

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, in 2007, U.S. agriculture used more than a billion pounds of pesticides (which performs out to be only a fifth of the pesticides employed globe wide, nonetheless).  The USDA also reports farmers utilized 22 million tons of synthetic fertilizer in 2011.

That is a good deal of chemicals to be spraying on the land.  But the impact of chemical use does not finish there.

Petroleum chemical compounds such as ethylene, propylene and methane are utilised to generate many of the pesticides on the market right now.  And the quantity of power employed to produce synthetic nitrogen fertilizer (much more than 13 million tons) could heat 5.five million properties for a yr.

Additionally much more than half the nitrogen our farmers now use comes from places like Trinidad, Russia, and the Persian Gulf.

three.  Like cosmetics, agri-chemical compounds are examined on animals

Several stay away from cosmetics tested on animals – but what about the meals you eat?  How do organizations check for the toxicity of chemical substances used in agriculture?

Agricultural chemical compounds are also examined on animals.  And not just lab rats and mice.  Dogs and cats, rabbits and monkeys [click right here to read through an example of the varieties of tests carried out].

Sufficient said.

four. We waste very good money on crappy foods, which in flip wastes assets

The argument towards consuming organic foods or far better raised meat (which, by the way, you should also consume considerably significantly less of) is that it fees as well considerably.  But what do we spend our funds on, and is it worth what we spend?

In 2013, Americans drank shut to 39 gallons of soda per particular person (at a expense of about $ 150 per particular person), and in 2011, approximately 25 % of the calories we consumed came from snack food items.

And but we willingly shell out one thousand occasions more for that can of soda then what it actually costs.  It turns out, it is not organic foods that is the rip off, but all that snack food we place in our buying carts without 2nd thought.

In other words, simply refraining from drinking soda could free up more than $ ten a month to commit on greater raised meals.  The Nationwide Institutes of Health also estimates that bringing lunch to operate 1 day a week could also conserve $ 270 and 48,000 calories a yr.

This Earth Day, celebrate the earth by creating much more informed choices about what you eat.  It might even have an affect on your personal entire body and wallet too.

Celebrating Earth Day: Science And Engineering Should Join The Get together

A number of years ago seventh graders at a tony personal college near San Francisco have been given an uncommon Earth Day assignment: Make a record of environmental tasks that could be achieved with Bill Gates’ fortune.  This strategy to environmental awareness fits in nicely with the Obama-Pelosi-Reid worldview that the correct to personal house is subsidiary to undertakings that others think are worthwhile – the redistributive theory of society.  And how intriguing that the resources produced “available” for the students’ considered-experiment were not, say, the aggregate net worth of the members of Congress but the wealth of 1 of the nation’s most productive, modern entrepreneurs.

One more Earth Day assignment for individuals very same students was to read Rachel Carson’s best-selling 1962 book, “Silent Spring,” an emotionally charged but deeply flawed excoriation of the widespread spraying of chemical pesticides for the management of insects.  As described by Roger Meiners and Andy Morriss in their scholarly nevertheless eminently readable 2012 analysis, “Silent Spring at 50: Reflections on an Environmental Traditional,” Carson exploited her reputation as a properly-identified nature writer to advocate and legitimatize “positions linked to a darker tradition in American environmental thinking: neo-Malthusian population management and anti-technologies efforts.”

Carson’s proselytizing and advocacy led to the virtual banning of DDT and to restrictions on other chemical pesticides in spite of the fact that “Silent Spring” was replete with gross misrepresentations and scholarship so atrocious that if Carson were an academic, she would be guilty of egregious academic misconduct.  Carson’s observations about DDT have been meticulously rebutted level by point by Dr. J. Gordon Edwards, Professor of Entomology at San Jose State University, a prolonged-time member of the Sierra Club and the Audubon Society, and a fellow of the California Academy of Sciences.  In his stunning 1992 essay, “The Lies of Rachel Carson,” Edwards demolished her arguments and assertions and named consideration to vital omissions, faulty assumptions, and outright fabrications.

Consider this quote from Edwards: “This implication that DDT is horribly deadly is fully false.  Human volunteers have ingested as a lot as 35 milligrams of it a day for nearly two many years and suffered no adverse results.  Hundreds of thousands of men and women have lived with DDT intimately throughout the mosquito spray programs and nobody even received sick as a consequence.  The Nationwide Academy of Sciences concluded in 1965 that ‘in a little far more than two decades, DDT has prevented 500 million [human] deaths that would otherwise have been inevitable.’ The Planet Well being Organization stated that DDT had ‘killed far more insects and saved much more men and women than any other substance.’”

Meiners and Morriss conclude properly that the influence of “Silent Spring” on present day environmentalism “encourages some of the most destructive strains inside environmentalism: alarmism, technophobia, failure to contemplate the expenses and advantages of options, and the discounting of human effectively-becoming all around the world.”  Sounds like a description of the mindset of the U.S. Environmental Safety Agency.

The 1st Earth Day celebration was conceived by then-U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson and held in 1970 as a “symbol of environmental duty and stewardship.”  In the spirit of the time, it was a touchy-feely, consciousness-raising, New Age experience, and most routines have been organized at the grass roots degree.  In current many years, Earth Day has offered an possibility for environmental Cassandras to prophesy apocalypse, dish anti-technology filth and proselytize.  Passion and zeal routinely trump science, and provability will take a back seat to plausibility.

One particular of the U.K.’s wonderful thinkers, Dick Taverne, aka Lord Taverne of Pimlico, discusses numerous of the shortcomings of New Age philosophy in his excellent book, “The March of Unreason.”  Taverne deplores the “new type of fundamentalism” that has infiltrated several environmentalist campaigns — an undiscriminating Back-To-Nature motion that views science and technology as the enemy and as a manifestation of an exploitative, rapacious and reductionist perspective towards nature.  It is no coincidence, he believes, that eco-fundamentalists are strongly represented in anti-globalization and anti-capitalism demonstrations around the world.

In this, Taverne echoes the late physician and novelist Michael Crichton, who argued in his considerably-acclaimed novel “State of Fear” that eco-fundamentalists have reinterpreted traditional Judeo-Christian beliefs and myths and produced a religion of environmentalism, a religion with its own Eden and paradise the place mankind lived in a state of grace and unity with nature until finally mankind’s fall — which came not from eating an apple, but after consuming from the forbidden tree of knowledge (that is, science).  This religion also has a judgment day to come for us all in this polluted planet — all of us, that is, except for true environmentalists, who will be saved by attaining sustainability.  One particular of Crichton’s characters argues that given that the end of the Cold War, environmental alarmism in Western nations has filled the void left by the disappearance of the terror of communism and nuclear holocaust, and that social management is now maintained by hugely exaggerated fears about pollution, worldwide warming, chemical compounds, genetic engineering and the like.  With the military-industrial complicated no longer the main driver of society, the politico-legal-media complex has replaced it.

This politico-legal-media complex peddles dread in the guise of advertising safety.  French author and philosopher Pascal Bruckner captured its tone nicely: “You’ll get what you’ve got coming!  That is the death want that our misanthropes handle to us.  These are not wonderful souls who alert us to troubles but tiny minds who wish us suffering if we have the presumption to refuse to pay attention to them.  Catastrophe is not their fear but their joy.”

The small-minded misanthropes have appreciated some dubious “successes.”  They have effectively banished agricultural biotechnology from Europe, have the chemical sector on the run and the pharmaceutical market in their crosshairs.

Lord Taverne believes these are ominous trends that are contrary to the rules of the Enlightenment, returning us to an era in which inherited dogma and superstition took precedence over experimental data.  Not only do the practices of eco-fundamentalism retard technologies and the availability of items which, employed responsibly, could significantly boost and lengthen many lives and shield the environment, but they strangle scientific creativity and technological innovation.

By limiting citizens’ and businesses’ capacity to engage in voluntary transactions, irrational practices born of eco-fundamentalism undermine the overall health of civilized society and of democracy.  Defend science and cause, argues Taverne, and you defend democracy itself.  Nicely said, Milord, and Happy Earth Day to you.

Why Drink Organic, Biodynamic And Sustainable Wines For Earth Day?

Speaking about organic wine is remarkably difficult. When I set out to compose this column I planned on rounding up some organic producers, tasting some wines and calling out the tastiest selections. Straightforward peasy, unless of course you start asking concerns. First, organic wine and wine created with organic grapes are two fully various things. Then there are some who purport that organic farming demands as well much tilling and sustainable farming is the far better route. And, then we have the biodynamic producers who preach the benefits of manure teas and can be located burying cow horns in the soil during a descending moon phase.

The conversation about which practice is greater (organic, sustainable or biodynamic) is sizzling appropriate now. At a latest wine tasting a winemaker, and disciple of sustainable farming, vented to me that organic farming was crap since, amongst other things, it calls for hefty soil tillage. Or, consider Burgundian (and biodynamic) winemaker Emmanuel Giboulot who was lately fined numerous hundred euros for not spraying his vines to destroy a flying pest. The French authorities believed his decision may possibly endanger nearby vineyards from the traveling pest. What’s most interesting is that we are obtaining the conversation at all. Offered the volume of viewpoint on the matter, I’ve broken this story into a 3-element series to give correct area to each strategy. In honor of Earth Day, and because it is the phrase we are all most familiar with, it seems fitting to start off with organic wine.

Very first, as I pointed out before, organic wine is different than wine made with organically grown grapes.

Wines manufactured from certified organically grown grapes are farmed with no synthetic additives and pesticides. But, these winemakers add sulphur at the bottling stage to manage for spoilage. Without the addition of sulphur, the wines truly have no shelf existence. In contrast, “organic wines” are manufactured from organically grown grapes and have no added sulfites, but, consider note, some could be existing naturally. Natural farming does require far more soil tillage to control weeds, (this is a dilemma if vines are expanding on a hillside, as it prospects to topsoil erosion), and usually prohibits synthetic pesticides but, it does permit for the use of normal pesticides.

It is worth noting that organic does not mean the vines are free from sprays and applications. Organic labeling and farming may possibly quickly fall out of favor as shoppers start to evaluate it to biodynamic and sustainable practices. All that stated, organic farming is a far better substitute to industrial practices that rely solely on chemical compounds and do tiny to sustain the surroundings.

All of the wines under are manufactured from natural grapes.
Natural Wines to try in 2014
2012 Cono Sur Natural Cabernet/Carmenere Blend,$ 14. some bell pepper, darker low toned fruits, coffee, smooth tannins, light bodied on the palate.

2011 Emiliana Coyam, $ 34. Mushroom and previous forest with a heap of black fruits, plums some white pepper and a soft, lingering finish. The wine is named for the ancient oaks that surround the vineyards.

2009 Domaine Carneros by Tattinger, Estate Brut Cuvee, CA, $ 32. This inaugural one hundred% organically farmed California bubbly has been aged for three many years on the lees. A vivacious citrus nose and heaps of racy fine bubbles operate nicely with the creamy texture on the palate. Offered only at the winery.

2012 Bonterra Sauvignon Blanc, Grassy, herbal with pink grapefruit and a great sweet kiwi note at the finish. Expressive of the great climate it comes from grapes sourced from Mendocino and Lake counties. Bonterra is 1 of the biggest producers of organic wines in California.

2010 Inman Family Wine, OGV Pinot Noir (SRP $ 68). The OGV Pinot Noir comes from Kathleen Inman’s 10.5-acre organically-farmed estate Olivet Grange Vineyard in the Russian River Valley. It is a refreshing departure from the normal Russian River Pinot Noir—lighter in alcohol and more finely tuned with large toned strawberry and raspberry fruits and a lingering finish rounded out with great acidity.
