The British tennis stars Laura Robson and Tim Henman have been amongst the mourners who gathered in Ipswich on Monday to spend tribute to Elena Baltacha, the former British tennis No 1 who died of liver cancer aged 30.

Baltacha died on four May possibly from a single of the most deadly kinds of liver cancer. She was diagnosed in January, just two months following she had retired from tennis and just a number of weeks right after her marriage to her lengthy-time coach, Nino Severino.

Hundreds attended the private funeral held at St John’s church in Ipswich, the town the place Baltacha set up her own tennis academy. They integrated Judy Murray, the mother of the British tennis No 1 Andy Murray, Laura Robson and former players Jo Durie, Annabel Croft and Tim Henman. Mourners were asked to wear their brightest colours at the request of Baltacha, who did not want absolutely everyone in black.

The hearse was filled with floral tributes with one spelling “EBAT x” in honour of the Elena Baltacha Academy of Tennis, and a Ukrainian flag was laid on top of the coffin in a nod to her heritage.

Born in Kiev to Ukranian mother and father, Baltacha was raised in Perth, Scotland, and counted Judy Murray amongst her former tennis coaches. At the age of 19, the tennis star was diagnosed with a unusual continual liver condition, major sclerosing cholangitis, which she managed with medicine during her job.

In spite of her situation, Baltacha went on to win 11 tennis singles titles, was ranked as Britain’s prime player for 132 weeks and reached a job-substantial world ranking of 49 in 2010.

Just just before her retirement from the sport, Baltacha opened the Elena Baltacha Academy of Tennis, which helps disadvantaged children to perform the sport.

Judy Murray, who travelled from Scotland for the funeral, stated: “She was 1 of the most selfless, undemanding, appreciative little ones I ever came across.

“We want to do no matter what we can to make confident she is remembered, to make confident she has a legacy and this academy, that was so dear to her heart, survives and thrives as lengthy as we’re all around to do that.”

Coronation Street: Hayley"s funeral, ITV, overview

See, funny. And fitting of every single and every single character. Hayley had also selected a cardboard coffin, so that she could be recycled by nature. “I’m not shuffling off like a piece of flatpack furniture,” chimed Norris, with his typical caustic tone.

Roy silently and reluctantly attended the service at the crematorium. Additional moments of humour were peppered during. Hayley’s coffin, carried by her fellow factory staff, was brought in to Queen’s Don’t Quit Me Now. Back at the Rovers, where the wake was to be held, Steve was juggling with the Scotch eggs from the buffet table.

But, as expected, it was Neilson’s delicate performance that stopped us in our tracks, especially when he interrupted Fiz’s eulogy simply because he believed that every person need to know the truth. We believed that he may well speak the unspeakable, speak about these drugs and her “choice”.

“She wasn’t ideal, she was flawed,” he began. But as his eyes gravitated in the direction of her floral-patterned coffin, and with heart-breaking poignancy, he changed his thoughts.

“She was… a beautiful coruscating light. She was my constant, my compass. Hayley was my truth.”

Neilson conveyed the anguish and emotion so effortlessly that it was challenging not to physically feel the sadness aching via his bones. The meticulous detail of these episodes and the careful managing of this kind of an important topic has been outstanding. As Roy disappeard into the evening clutching his infamous purchasing bag as if it have been the only factor left that he could hold shut, it was clear that the cobbles will by no means fairly be the very same yet again.
