5 Reasons You Should Get a Good Night’s Rest

Do you really need convincing when it comes to doing things that are good for you?  When it comes to getting a good night’s sleep, however, many people just simply are not getting it (1,2).  Here are some reasons why it is absolutely a necessity (2):

Pay Attention Longer

There is a reason why your teachers always used to tell you that you should get a good night’s sleep before taking a big exam.  One of the main reasons why they instilled this in you is because proper rest has a great impact on brain function.  If the brain is able to shut down at night, and the cells have a chance to be restored, then it will be much sharper the next day.  Heavy thought weighing on the mind at night are no good for memory, so it is very important that you get a full eight hours for maximum brain capacity when you wake up.

You’ll Keep Your Friends

Maintaining a routine of sporadic naps throughout the day, and having a restless night can cause a significant amount of frustration in the morning.  This will eventually transform into moodiness, and it will be carried with you all day long.  Consistently being disrupted during the night can often make people angry, especially when they notice that other people have been able to sleep all night long.  This anger is sure to boil over, and you may find yourself taking it out on people, even (or sometimes especially) those closest to you.  Good friends will understand your sleeping problems to a point, but no one wants to deal with a crab for very long.

Tired of Sagging and Bagging?

If you are getting sick of constantly looking like you have two black eyes and sallow skin, there is an easy solution for that.  Skin cells naturally renew themselves, strengthening the collagen and elastin, when your body is completely at rest.  The longer they have to do this, the firmer your skin will be, and you can fight off the effects of aging.  All that is needed is a pillow, a good mattress, and eight hours with absolutely nothing to distract you.  The next time you wake up from a good night’s sleep, you will hardly recognize that youthful person staring back at you.

What the Doctor Ordered

You have heard it before, but now it is time to put this medical advice to work.  Allow your body the resting time it needs to naturally renew and revitalize its organs in order to perform at maximum capacity.  By not getting a good night’s sleep, you are simply saying with your actions that you do not care about your health.

It Just Feels So Darn Good

Sometimes in your busy life, lying in bed at night may be the only time you have to yourself.  If I were you, I would relish it, and nuzzle comfortably into your bed.  Can you think of any reason why you shouldn’t just lie there and do absolutely nothing?  You will be rewarding your body after a hard day’s work full of chaos.

Common Reasons Why People Have Trouble Sleeping and What You Can Do to Get A Good Night’s Sleep

In a 2003 report released by the National Commission on Sleep Disorders, it was found that over $ 150 billion was lost each year due to decreased worker productivity and other related issues due to a lack of adequate sleep.  Now, five years after the release of the study, it seems that thousands of people are still having trouble sleeping.  Trouble sleeping can stem from a wide range of problems and can make for a restless night or lead to major sleep deprivation which can be quite serious.  Here are some of the common reasons why people are having trouble sleeping and what you need to know to deal with those problems (2).

Problem #1: Inability to Get Comfortable

Many people simply cannot fall asleep because they can never seem to get comfortable at night or they toss and turn a lot through the night.  This can be due to a poor bed, inappropriate pillows, or pain.

Solution:  If this seems to be your problem there are a couple of things that you can do to improve our quality of sleep.  First, if you cannot seem to get comfortable due to back or neck pain, this may be due to the type of pillow that you are using.  Try switching to something that gives you more support and a natural alignment during sleep such as a contoured memory foam pillow or adjusting the height and firmness of your pillows.  If your pain does not subside or there seems to be other pain that is causing you to have trouble sleeping it may be a sign of a more serious problem that you may want to speak to your health care provider about.

Problem # 2: Stress and Anxiety

Stress is one of the most common contributors to why people have trouble sleeping.  Stress causes a wide range of effects on your health from headaches to a lower immune system and many of the problems that result from stress can interfere with your sleep.

Solution: If you are having trouble sleeping due to stress or anxiety there are a few simple things that you can do.  Learning stress management and stress reduction techniques can help you to reduce the amount of stress in your life that is causing you to have trouble sleeping.  Meditating before bed can help you to unwind (1).  And using aromatherapy is a natural way to help you to relax and soothe you off to sleep (3).  Using bath oils or aromatic bath salts in a warm bath before bedtime, spraying your bed sheets with a lavender sleep mist, or using aromatherapy pillows are all great was to promote a relaxing night of sleep.

Problem # 3: Sleep Disorders

There are dozens of sleep disorders that can range from mild annoyances to serious, life-threatening conditions.  If you have trouble sleeping that is continuous and ongoing and that does not subside when you try any of the other remedies, then your trouble sleeping could be a sign of something more.

Solution: Speak to your doctor or a local sleep center who can test for sleep disorders.

Problem # 4: Hormonal Imbalances

Hormonal changes due to pregnancy, menopause or PMS can also give you trouble sleeping.

Solution: Speak with your doctor about ways to balance your hormones and to see which herbal remedies may be safe for you to try.  Also, any of the great aromatherapy choices mentioned above can also be helpful.

Common Reasons Why People Have Trouble Sleeping and What You Can Do to Get A Good Night’s Sleep

Don"t loose your snooze: the technology that"s promising a better night"s sleep

A bed that adjusts itself in the night to stop people from snoring. A princess and the pea-style gadget that fits under a mattress and monitors sleep. A “water-based, app-controlled mattress topper”, which will encourage deep slumber.

Sleep technology is one of the biggest trends at CES, the world’s premier electronics show, which opened to the public on Thursday.

The range of products on show reflect the growing interest in solutions to insomnia and other sleep problems – as well as the predictions that the global sleep market will be worth $ 80bn by 2020.

The “Sleep Number 360 smart bed”, made by bed company Sleep Number, is among the most eye-catching products. The mattress can detect a change of body position during the night and uses air chambers in the mattress to contour to the sleeper’s frame.

Sampling the bed on Thursday morning, a Guardian reporter was promised “the most comfortable, effortless sleep” of his life.

The reporter did not actually fall asleep during the three minutes he spent on the bed, but could feel the bed adjusting to support his lower back and shoulders. Invited – by a video demonstration screened above the bed – to turn to his side, the bed adjusted again.

A video presentation explained that the Sleep Number 360 bed is “even smart enough to sense snoring before you do”.

Should it detect a snorer, the bed will raise the top of the mattress by 7%, which Sleep Number claims will stop the snoring. “It’s the only bed that goes to work when you go to sleep,” said Kelley Parker, senior product brand manager at Sleep Number.

The bed is able to detect the sleeper’s heart rate, breath rate and motion, to provide an excellent premium sleep experience, Parker said. It can adapt to two different sleepers’ positions. But this kind of sleep, it seems, does not come cheap.

Parker said that “pricing is not finalized” but that it would be similar to existing Sleep Number pricing. (The manufacturer’s top-of-the-range bed retails at $ 7,099.99 – although it is currently on sale for $ 5,899.99.)

A recurring theme at CES is connectivity. Almost every device on show – including some washing machines and ovens – will connect to cell phones and even smart home devices like the Amazon Echo or Google Home.

The Sleep Number 360 bed, and most of the other sleep devices on show at CES, connect to an app on a smartphone to give the user information on how they slept, and even remind a person when they should go to bed. The Sleep Number 360 will also connect to your thermostat to control room temperature during the night. (If you can afford a wireless thermostat after buying the bed.)

A few stalls along from the magic bed, Sleep Ace was demonstrating its own line of sleep-friendly products. The Sleep Dot attaches to the sleeper’s pillow and feeds information back to a cell phone on movement and sleep cycles.

Some wearable devices already to this, but the attraction of the Sleep Dot, which costs $ 49.99, is that you don’t need anything strapped to your wrist.

The National Institutes of Health estimates that 50 to 70 million Americans suffer from some kind of sleep disorder. Nearly one in five adults are said to suffer from chronic insomnia, while in February 2016 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said more than a third of people in the US do not get enough sleep.

Another product at CES, 2breathe Sleep Inducer, is a device that helps people sleep using guiding tones composed from the user’s breathing.

Sleeping less than seven hours a day can lead to increased risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and “frequent mental distress”, the CDC said.

One product that may be appreciated by fans of the Hans Christian Andersen, author of the The Princess and the Pea tale, is the Emfit QS. It’s a sensor that can be installed under a mattress to monitor sleep. It connects to a smartphone to provide “comprehensive reports” about “physical recovery, stress levels, and sleep quality”.

The company says it will be of particular interest to athletes seeking to track physical recovery. Like the Sleep Number the Emfit QS will also send alerts telling a userwhen to go to bed, which could potentially be helpful (or annoying).

Another sleep device generating interest at CES is the “Kryo Sleep Performance System”: a mattress topper that cools down to 60F(16C), which the company claims is optimum for deep sleep.

The Kryo connects to a smart phone – of course – and within ten nights of collecting data it will understand a sleeper’s habits enough to optimize its temperature. The mattress topper has been financed by an Indiegogo campaign, and Kryo estimates it will ship out some of the Kryo sleep performance systems in 2017. It is expected to cost $ 299.

The science behind a good nights sleep

Sleep is more than just a time for rest, the importance of sleep extends to almost every area of human physiology, physical processes of the body undertaken mostly during sleep range from areas such as the healing of muscle and organ tissue, the regulation of blood pressure, the ability of the body to regulate and respond to blood sugar levels along with the balance and delivery of specific hormones and chemical messengers. Mentally, sleep allows the brain to process thoughts, thought processes, store new experiences / memories, enhance emotional responses, along with optimizing the connections between brain and body functions.

Ongoing sleep deficiency is a great risk to society, and in the modern day where a good nights sleep is becoming an elusive luxury, we are seeing an ever increasing prevalence of disorders such as heart and kidney disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and stroke.

Mentally, the effects of lack of sleep affect almost every aspect of the mind, from the ability to make clear decisions to attention span deficits, increased stress, anxiety and irritability, poor emotional responses, to more serious aspects such as depression, generalized anxiety disorder and even psychosis.

Some studies have shown that obtaining less than 4 hours sleep per night provides almost no benefit to our health, and with prolonged sleep within this range, negative effects begin to take hold.

The preferred level of sleep is between an absolute minimum of 5 and a maximum of 9 hours. This is because of the brain while asleep performs a variety of tasks under different brain wave states, and each of these states needs to be present for a specific amount of time each night for our bodies functions to be able to repair and recover.

Sleep and the effects of various brain wave stages

You may have heard of REM stage sleep before, this stands for Rapid Eye Movement and is a phase of somewhat chaotic and high-frequency brain waves which are most noticeable due to visible, rapid eye movements while asleep. REM is a sign that an individual is in a deep sleep state. However there are other areas of sleep associated with different brain wave patterns.

Beta brain waves are most commonly present while completely awake, and are associated with the ability to perform basic wakeful tasks, too much time spent in the beta state is known to create symptoms of stress and anxiety, while too little is commonly associated with symptoms of depression and poor cognition.

A stronger frequency of brain waves is known as Gamma waves, which are prevalent at times while awake when memory, learning and information processing is taking priority. Too long or too little amount of time the brain spends in a Gamma wave state is associated with similar negative effects as that of Beta waves.

Upon heading to bed, your brain moves from Gamma and Beta states, into a more uniform wave pattern known as Alpha waves, this brain wave state begins to bridge the gap between conscious thinking and the subconscious mind, it also induces a feeling of deep relaxation, and is the bridge between wakefulness and sleep.

Following the experience of the Alpha brain wave state, the brain then proceeds further into what is known as the Theta state, which produces an effect on the body of deep relaxation and hypnosis. The individual experiencing Theta waves can still be awake, and this state is known to produce enhanced creativity, intuition and a natural feeling of euphoria / well-being. The theta state is one of the most important for healthy daily function, too little provokes poor emotional awareness, both in self-awareness and in the observation of others, along with increased stress and anxiety.

The final sleep phase before REM is known as the Delta state. As we age, along with during the prevalence of psychological problems such as stress and anxiety, the brain becomes less accustomed to entering this stage. However, it is one of the most important sleep stages for regaining energy exerted during the day. Mentally a complete lack of Delta brain wave stage results in the inability to recover from stress and anxiety symptoms, leading to their continuation from day to day.

Throughout sleep, the brain normally fluctuates between Alpha, Theta and Delta stages, before entering REM, which is a combination of Gamma and Beta waves, each stage lasts around 5 minutes, and cycles continually throughout the night.

It is this continuation of various patterns which allow our bodies to both physically and mentally recover for the following day, and is vital to our overall health.

Health conditions such as sleep apnoea, continually interrupt this cycle throughout the night, causing problems for everyday health if not corrected.

Also important to note is the use of sedative drugs, although they can be important sometimes in the short-term, are known to alter sleep brain wave patterns significantly, especially the time spent throughout each sleep stage, there is also evidence they may even block entirely the Delta state in some people.

Sleep Hygiene

The awareness of correct sleep hygiene is becoming more common as the modern stresses of life begin to take hold and produce negative effects upon our health. Sleep hygiene involves a few common practices to ensure you obtain the best sleep possible and can assist you to avoid the health complications of poor sleep.

Sleep hygiene involves 6 equal levels of importance when it comes to maximizing the benefits and ability to obtain a good nights sleep, by following these steps, health problems related to sleep, both short and long term, can usually be avoided entirely.

For individuals where some of these stages pose a problem, addressing some of the other areas can also help to bring your sleep more in-line with a healthy sleep process.

1: Maintain a regular sleep schedule.

Ensuring you head to sleep, and also wake up, at the same time each day ensures the body produces a regular sleep pattern. By sleeping at the same time each night, the body begins to produce sleep hormones at the same time, roughly beginning around 6 hours before sleep occurs.

Sleeping at a different time each day often upsets this rhythm, and the beginning of the production of melatonin can be affected. While most of us only think of sleep as occurring at the end of a day, the body sees it as a continual and recurring pattern over 24 hours, of which the production of melatonin begins a long entrance into the preparation for sleep, and enables the sleep process to become one of a deep and restorative phase.

2: Prepare for sleep for around 30 minutes to 1 hour before heading to bed

Lowering the sensory input of your surroundings for 30 minutes to 1 hour before heading to bed is a great method for signaling to the body that sleep should begin. To achieve this, you should dim lights around you, lower any sources of noise, and do not partake in, or at minimum lower your exposure to, any situation or activity which may provoke excitement, stress or anxiety. By doing this for 30 minutes to 1 hour before sleep each night, the body can use this experience to signal the onset of your sleep phase and will provide a much more relaxing, lasting and restorative sleep.

3: Avoid naps during the day, especially in the afternoon.

If you regularly feel tired throughout the day, unless in a situation where a short nap is required, such as driving on a long journey to maintain concentration, try to keep yourself awake throughout the day until bed time. Morning naps or rests involving laying back and closing the eyes for 15 minutes or more may be fine. However if this is conducted in the afternoon, it can often lead to the inability to enter into the sleep phase easily that night.

4: Exercise assists sleep

Lack of exercise not only produces unspent energy levels throughout the day, which lingers at night time but also affect the bodies signal for requiring a good amount of sleep. By exercising daily, even for as little as a short 30 minutes walk, the body releases endorphins, which promote relaxation and euphoria, along with also providing a signal to the body that a good nights rest is required at the end of the day.

5: Restrict sensory input as much as possible within your room overnight

When it’s time for lights out and sleep, your body requires as little noise as possible to reliably initiate the sleep phase and to obtain the ability to keep you asleep for the full night. Ensuring your room is light free, and free from distracting sounds, such as clocks ticking, or something such as having the tv on in the background, even in another room while you are sleeping is very important.

Where this is not possible, such as when a partner has an issue with snoring, some preparation may be required, ear putty is normally the best method as it seals the ear shut completely, and should eliminate the majority of the noise. If you live in an apartment and there are street lights outside, upgrading to buying some high-quality blinds, or even wearing eye shades can help a lot.

Some people, however, prefer some noise to get them to sleep, in these cases, it is important to understand that a constant and stable sensory input can be just as helpful as no sensory input, regarding noise; this is commonly this is referred to as white noise. White noise is a constant, stable noise and can promote sleep in some people just as well as no noise at all. Devices which commonly emit a constant white noise are items such as humidifiers, fans and air purifiers, and can assist people who struggle with no noise environments to get to sleep and maintain sleep quality.

6: Sleep on a high-quality mattress and use quality pillows

Many people overlook the importance of a good quality mattress and pillows or invest in such things without realizing when it has come time to replace them. Most high-quality mattresses will last for up to 10 years before needing to be replaced. However, lower quality ones may expire in as little as 2 to 3. Mattresses should not only be comfortable, but support your body correctly when laying down. You should not sink into the mattress at a central point, but rather the shape of your body should sink evenly, so your back is straight when laying down either on your side, back or stomach.

In the same way, neck support from high-quality pillows are very important, many people who use low quality pillows often double or triple up on them, however it is often worth spending a good amount of money on one to two pillows which allow your head to rest comfortably, but also support your neck evenly.

In the case of a quality mattress and pillows, the investment is one of your overall health, and sleeping with an either of low quality or past their lifespan, will degrade your sleep quality considerably.

Just as buying an ergonomic office chair is shown to prevent back and muscle injuries to office workers, a high-quality mattress, and pillows will improve your overall health and well-being.

Cherry juice key to a good night"s sleep

Dr Frank Greenway, the study leader, of Louisiana State University, warned towards older individuals taking sleeping drugs to fight insomnia. He said that such medicines, “quadruple the chance of falling, which can lead to broken hips and, frequently, earlier death”.

In an experiment, seven adults with an typical age of 68 with insomnia drank eight ounces of cherry juice twice every day for two weeks, followed by a two-week break, then two weeks when they took a placebo drink.

They were observed to see how swiftly they fell asleep and how lengthy they stayed sleeping. Participants also finished questionnaires connected to sleep, fatigue, depression and anxiety.

Researchers discovered that those who drank a sour cherry juice in the morning and at night were in a position to sleep an typical of 84 minutes a lot more each evening, compared to people who drank a placebo. In addition, their rest was much less disrupted.

Sour cherries are a all-natural supply of melatonin, a hormone that assists regulate the sleep-wake cycle.

The review group think the naturally happening red pigments in sour cherry juice, known as proanthocyanidins, also perform a part since they generate chemicals that support with rest.

Jet Lag, Late Nights, And Naps Disrupt Your Genes, New Study Exhibits

Business travelers, shift staff, university students, and overworked tech staff, beware. Unusual sleep patterns, notably sleeping for the duration of the day and staying up late at evening, wreak havoc with the action of your genes, new investigation demonstrates.

Researchers at the Sleep Study Centre at the University of Surrey in the United kingdom interrupted review participants’ rest at normal intervals above three days, taking blood samples to keep track of gene function. The findings: Daytime sleeping disrupted the rhythms of up to one third of the participants’ genes.

The review, published on the web yesterday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), helps to shed light on the mechanism for previously established connections amongst interrupted rest and significant well being difficulties such as heart disease, weight problems, diabetes, and cancer.

“This analysis may assist us to understand the damaging wellness outcomes linked with shift perform, jet lag, and other conditions in which the rhythms of our genes are disrupted.”said lead researcher Derk-Jan Dijk, professor of Sleep and Physiology and director of the Sleep Investigation Centre.

Using a light-managed sleep lab, Dijk and staff manipulated the examine participants’ sleep patterns, postponing their bedtime by four hrs a day until finally the topics were 12 hours out of sync with their standard day/evening biological clock. The purpose was to mimic the results of jet lag or working the night shift, the researchers explained. Blood exams unveiled decreased gene expression, which can impact the body’s circadian rhythms, as effectively as bodily functions this kind of as metabolic process, irritation, pressure and immune response.

The study has worrisome implications not only for shift staff, but for enterprise vacationers, university students, and sleep-deprived employees of all stripes, who typically nap or sleep for the duration of the day to make up for operating late into the night. (Much more and more businesses are setting up nap rooms to offset employees’ late work hours.)

The prolonged function days are taking their toll – in accordance to the most recent poll by the National Rest Basis, 43 % of Americans among the ages of 13 and 64 rarely or never get a  total night’s sleep for the duration of the perform and college week.

In the past couple of years, scientists have been honing in on the connection between rest patterns, light publicity at night, and significant wellness issues. Last 12 months the American Health-related Association (AMA) house of delegates went so far as to concern a policy statement warning that “nighttime electrical light can disrupt circadian rhythms in humans” and that this disruption “affects aspects of physiology with direct hyperlinks to human health, such as cell cycle regulation, DNA damage response, and metabolism.”

Analysis has linked late nights, shift function, and ambient light to well being situations ranging from depression to early death. The AMA’s concern was primarily based, in portion, on a expanding physique of new analysis linking doing work at evening beneath vibrant lights with enhanced risk of breast cancer.

In a research published  final year in Chronobiology International, researchers from Yale University and the Danish Cancer Society demonstrated that girls who worked at evening had the exact same epigenetic alterations – biological modifications that impact gene expression – previously observed in ladies with breast cancer. In 2007, the International Company for Investigation on Cancer declared shift perform a “probable human carcinogen.”

Although the recent United kingdom review was a little 1, involving just 22 participants, preceding study by Dijk and colleagues published final yr also in PNAS  documented equivalent findings.
