Race for Life’s branding is cliched and infantile. It’s time to sink the pink | Phoebe-Jane Boyd

Beset upon by pink fluff on all sides, like awaking to find yourself trapped in Barbara Cartland’s musty closet, we’re once more in the midst of Race for Life fundraising season. It’s an important and worthy cause, and yet many hearts (soft, kind hearts) can’t help but sink at the pinkification. “I’ll donate later – I promise” is hesitantly mumbled to beaming participants, and donations are quietly given to the main Cancer Research UK branch instead.

Does avoiding the old-fashioned-gender-cliches-for-charity’s-sake make you a monster? Or should charities receive the same criticism other publicity campaigns get when they use tired stereotyping?

Race for Life isn’t Oven Pride, obviously – it works to save lives, helping those impacted by breast cancer and building a community of support. We know this, we agree with the work. But not always so much with the gender-segregation (men are still banned from running in the races alongside women), and its core brand colour that pulses (however unfairly) with negative undertones, highlighted by such campaigns as Think Before You Pink and Pinkstinks – and the documentary Pink Ribbons, Inc.

Working to balance out Race for Life’s saccharine feather boa-and-cupcake prissiness with some grit are today’s grime-caked Pretty Muddy events, aggressive taglines such as “Hell hath no fury like a woman in pink” and adverts with Braveheart-like line-ups of women ready to run. But can there be any escaping the pink central to it all, and its associations?

After all, the rosy breast cancer awareness ribbons used by organisations such as Race for Life only came about after Estée Lauder turned originator Charlotte Haley’s peachy-orange strips to pink back in the 1990s, after researchers found the colour to be the most “non-threatening”. Ad copy can be packed to the hilt with wrath, dirt, and ferocity, but if its core colour was chosen for its non-threatening impact, then any lately adopted roughness comes across as a weak cover for still-fluffy and asinine insides.

Race for Life’s cutesy and sometimes infantile branding (Real Women Wear Mud, apparently) has a gender problem at its heart. And it’s not necessary. Just because a charity is fundraising for a gender-specific disorder or disease, it doesn’t follow that its efforts should be based around outdated gender cliches to gain support. That belongs to another time; not today, not now. In any case, breast cancer doesn’t just affect women: it’s rare, but men can have the disease too.

A counterpoint to Race for Life’s downsides, if you’re looking for some male-focused charity stereotyping, is the Campaign Against Living Miserably’s (Calm) Mandictionary initiative. “Mandictionary” – sounds just terrible, doesn’t it? Down there with the passive-aggressive phrase “man flu”: it’s that low. Bus stop posters for the campaign feature words such as Mantip (“Disposal of a drink when you’re struggling to keep up with your mates”) and Manbaggage (“A puppy [...] used by a bachelor to heighten ‘cute levels’ in parks”) – so far, so much forced machismo bullshit. But then there’s Imangination (“The capacity to believe in multiple definitions of masculinity”) and Mandown (“One of the 12 men who take their life every day in this country”).

Calm are doing something slightly more subtle – aiming to dismantle the stereotypes that men are pressured to conform to by parodying some of the most trite. Many examples are contributed via Twitter and Facebook by men who are hurt by such cliches. It’s an unexpected, clever way to highlight the harm in gender essentialism.

So how do we get more of these different approaches and voices into advertising and awareness campaigns? The IPA’s diversity quota for UK advertising, marketing and communication agencies looking to hire and promote could be one way. Before three years is up, the industry must have 40% women in senior roles and 15% of its senior people from non-white backgrounds. Prescriptive perhaps, but needed in an industry that isn’t moving quickly enough on its own.

Real charity campaigns – and successful marketing/advertising campaigns – don’t make potential contributors feel resistant and uncomfortable about engaging with them. The industry that puts them together needs new voices that we can relate and respond to. Ultimately that’s the best way to make all of us – whatever our gender or race – dip into our pockets.

It"s official: access to green spaces leaves you in the pink

People living close to trees and green spaces are less likely to be obese, inactive, or dependent on anti-depressants, according to a new report.

Middle-aged Scottish men with homes in deprived but verdant areas were found to have a death rate 16% lower than their more urban counterparts. Pregnant women also received a health boost from a greener environment, recording lower blood pressures and giving birth to larger babies, research in Bradford found.

Overall, nature is an under-recognised healer, the paper says, offering multiple health benefits from allergy reductions to increases in self-esteem and mental wellbeing.

A study team of 11 researchers at the Institute of European environmental policy (IEEP) spent a year reviewing more than 200 academic studies for the report, which is the most wide-ranging probe yet into the dynamics of health, nature and wellbeing.

The project first appeared as an unpublicised 280-page European commission literature review last autumn, before being augmented for Friends of the Earth Europe with analysis of the links between nature-related health outcomes and deprivation.

“The evidence is strong and growing that people and communities can only thrive when they have access to nature,” said Robbie Blake, a nature campaigner for Friends of the Earth Europe, which commissioned the analysis.

“We all need nature in our lives, it gives us freedom and helps us live healthily; yet deprived communities are routinely cut off from nature in their surroundings and it is suffocating for their well-being.”

The report makes use of several studies that depict access to nature as being inextricably linked to wealth inequality, because deprived communities typically have fewer natural environments within easy reach.

Despite this, the study cites research that 26% of England’s black and minority ethnic populations visit natural environments up to three times a year, compared with 15% of the rest of the population.

Patrick ten Brink, the IEEP’s director, praised cities such as Oslo and Victoria-Gasteiz for taking steps to make nature accessible to all.

“We should be inspired by this and work together so that all Europeans have nature within 300 metres of their homes in the next 10 years,” he said.

Previous US research has found that that hospital patients with tree views from their windows were discharged a day earlier than those whose rooms faced walls.

An extra 10 trees on a Toronto city block provided health benefits to residents equivalent to a $ 10,000 increase in annual income, or being seven years younger, another study in 2015 found.

Gone off sex? Never ever concern, ‘pink Viagra’ is here to save womankind

Rejoice, rejoice womankind! There is now a magic drug that will make intercourse desirable. Once more. Or for the very first time. I can’t identify right here the presently-present medicines that have this kind of an effect due to the fact they are unlawful, and who knows what would occur if men and women took them? (In reality, they have done for decades.) But, by no means mind, this new magic drug has just been legalised in the US, getting been authorized by the US Meals and Drugs Administration. Flibanserin has just passed an FDA advisory committee stage at the third attempt, so will quickly be on the marketplace. It will be sold as Addyi and is developed by Sprout Pharmaceuticals, which has been pushing what has been dubbed “the female Viagra” for some time.

The tablets are, of program, pink because ladies like pink tablets and not blue smarties as we are silly like that. ‘Pink Viagra’ has been the holy grail of the drugs market. Let’s face it, it’s the holy grail of all varieties of cultural imaginings: the magic substance that tends to make ladies who mostly cannot be that bothered with sex abruptly crave it. Even with their very own partners! No drug can assure this, obviously. Many years in the past, when I worked in a wellness meals store in Manhattan, I was usually shocked by the number of males who asked me to promote them one thing to: “Make my wife … you know? Like it.” But I even now flogged them any outdated mixture of herbs and nutritional vitamins simply because I was doing work on commission. I was tough of heart and quick of money.

The drug companies, however, are not brief of cash and, without a doubt, there have been some crucial breakthroughs recently on every little thing from Ebola to Alzheimer’s. 1 of the greatest funds-spinners, although, remains the “magic bullet”, Viagra, invented by Pfizer at Sandwich ahead of the US giant shut down the site in 2011. Viagra commenced out as a new therapy for angina, a heart issue that constricts the vessels that provide blood to the heart. By accident, it was identified that – hey presto! – a side-impact of the drug was to remedy erectile dysfunction.

A single of the unspoken effects of the uptake of Viagra is that men can now have sex with a lot more, and younger, partners. The “shame” of impotency is pummelled away affordably adequate. If this is what sex is, and what it is reducible to, then fine. This is marvellous. You can get it up for ever and a day. A rush of blood to the groin is the dream coming correct.

Viagra as a result speaks to two of our biggest requirements: penetration and profit. The guarantee of Addyi is rather like all female desire: mysterious and by some means problematic. Viagra locates the sexual disorder of males in the genitals and their mechanics. The dilemma for females is positioned in the brain. Apparently, our brain chemistry should be altered to recharge desire. This new drug, unlike Viagra which can be popped when the require arises or is about to, has to be taken every day. It acts on the brain’s “sexual impulses” in a similar way to a class of medicines acknowledged as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, which incorporate antidepressants this kind of as Prozac. It has not been accepted right up until now due to the fact the hazards had been explained to outweigh the advantages.

The side-effects may possibly include low blood stress and loss of consciousness. And you can not drink alcohol with it. Arousing, or just awful? Nonetheless, plough on, due to the fact, even even though these who advocate it make its benefits sound as erotic as altering the battery in a remote management, it is well worth the risks, they say, simply because in small trials with placebos, the ladies on it have an “increase of about one particular sexually satisfying event a month”. Hold me back!

If you are not obtaining “sexually satisfying events”, you could be struggling with what some psychiatrists are calling hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD), which, they say, is skilled by eight-14% of girls in the US aged in between 20 and 49. Once you are over 49, no a single cares, frankly. HSDD is a chronic or ongoing lack of curiosity in intercourse that might cause a female distress. It is explained to be caused by depression, tension, low self-esteem or prior abuse. It might be caused by diabetes or cancer or arthritis. What this acronym are not able to deal with – since it cannot name it – is boredom, exhaustion, resentment, and boring outdated relationships: the items that may dampen sexual want.

To say that the brain is the most significant sex organ, which it is, absolutely requires knowing that sex is about a lot more than the ability to be ever ready for it, that there exists an infinite variety of urges that wax and wane, but truly mostly muddle along. And that most people’s lives do not resemble pornography even when they make a lot more work than normal.

Tellingly, even huge businesses this kind of as Pfizer, Bayer, and Procter and Gamble have experimented with to build drugs to deal with the disorder of female sexual desire, but abandoned the search. Even reading through Fifty Shades of Grey and possessing a person unload the dishwasher does not satisfy some women. Can you imagine? The reality is that the drug that liberated women’s need is the one we all get for granted: the contraceptive pill.

When It Comes To Paying out University Athletes, Is Title IX Far more Of A Red Herring Than A Pink Elephant?

NCAA leaders have continued to proclaim that a single roadblock to paying student-athletes is Title IX of the Patsy T. Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act.

Fellow Forbes writer Alicia Jessop not too long ago agreed — proclaiming that Title IX is “the elephant in the room” that could stop male pupil-athletes from unionizing and bargaining for much better doing work situations.

Even so, upon mindful evaluation of the two related situation law and the NCAA’s own company practices, 1 could fairly argue that Title IX isn’t really the pink elephant in the debate about compensating student-athletes.  It is a lot more like a red herring.

Title IX of the Equal Possibility Act, in pertinent element, states that “[n]o individual in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the rewards of, or be subjected to discrimination underneath any education program or action receiving Federal economic assistance.”  While this statute was originally drafted to apply to “any schooling plan,” most Title IX lawsuits right now involve school athletics.

Past case law explains that Title IX prevents discriminatory practices by colleges in creating athletic teams and supplying athletic scholarships.  Nonetheless, Title IX does not directly touch on whether there is a necessity of equal monetary terms for all student-athletes, over and beyond their athletic scholarships.

Courts have seldom analyzed Title IX in terms of shell out — maybe because NCAA members have historically fixed student-athlete pay at $ in spite of the apparent antitrust dangers of performing so.

Nonetheless, in people unusual instances where pay issues have emerged under Title IX, courts have normally viewed the act as coextensive with the Equal Pay Act of 1963 and the Civil Rights Act of 1964.  Thus, courts have upheld better pay for male coaches where the male coaches’ perform has been located to involve greater “skill, work or responsibility.”

While the terms “skill, effort or responsibility” are rather opaque, the potential to make income is one aspect that seems to fall reasonably within this criteria.  For instance, in Stanley v. University of Southern California, 13 F.3d 1313 (9th Cir. 1994), the U.S. Court for Appeals for the Ninth Circuit noted that it could be permissible for the University of Southern California to offer you increased pay out to its men’s basketball coach simply because the men’s group generated far greater annual revenues.

Stanley was not a Supreme Court case, nor did it take into account these troubles in its later on proceedings.  Nevertheless, NCAA members appear to rely on Stanley based on their historical past of allowing disparate pay out based mostly on coaches’ revenue making abilities.

As a outcome, because Stanley the NCAA’s already large pay out gap in between male and female coaches has only continued to widen.  For instance, statistics obtained by the New York Occasions from the U.S. Department of Training display that from 2003 to 2010 the typical shell out of NCAA Division I men’s group coaches increased by 67 %.  For the duration of this very same time period, the common shell out for NCAA Division I women’s staff coaches increased just 16 %.

Irrespective of whether or not one believes the gender shell out gap amongst university coaches to be just, it indubitably shows that NCAA members are prepared to pay out much more to individuals coaches that make revenues even if it indicates having to pay a lot more to men’s coaches.

If NCAA members are previously ready to spend much more to those coaches that make revenues, what is genuinely stopping them from adopting the same company practices with respect to their athletes?

Is it truly Title IX, or just member self-curiosity?
