South Korean women are neither especially diminutive nor remarkably lofty. With a mean height of 162.3cm, they are 12.5cm taller than their Filipina peers, and 7.5cm shorter than Latvian women. But they stand out from the crowd for one reason: they are a full 20cm taller than their ancestors a century ago. That collective growth spurt tells us something important: that height differences often ascribed to genetics owe a huge amount to nutrition, hygiene and healthcare. South Korea’s rapid development meant women’s growth was no longer hindered as it had been. In contrast, under-nourished Filipinas are still associated with “shortness”. Even within a community, cultural factors – such as an eldest son preference in South Asia – can lead to marked differences in height outcomes.


This is not a question of mere vanity. What really matters is not how tall one can grow, but whether one fails to grow as expected. More than 160 million of the world’s under-fives are stunted. In India 39% of children are stunted and in the Democratic Republic of the Congo 70%. Though stunting is a physical measure, and is associated with the increased risk of some chronic diseases such as diabetes in future, it is also an important indicator that mental development may have been affected. Their brains are unable to make the neural connections that they should; their cognitive ability does not blossom. Malnourished children also have little energy, further diminishing their ability to learn and escape poverty. Research suggests they are less likely to be enrolled in school, and learn less when they are there.


It is obvious why this bothers the World Health Organisation. But now the World Bank’s president is threatening to name and shame countries which fail to address the problem. Jim Yong Kim, a former doctor, says that stunting is not only the outcome of the unfair distribution of resources: it drives such imbalances, too, since inequality is “baked into the brains” of a quarter of children before they reach the age of five. The problem is not only humanitarian, but economic. And it is in the interest of governments to act – even if they are looking at the narrowest possible measures of national success – because they cannot compete if large portions of their workforces are stunted. Dr Kim’s ambitious goal is to halve stunting in seven years and end it in 14. A World Bank-sponsored programme in Peru, targeting families from pregnancy onwards, slashed stunting rates by giving conditional cash transfers to mothers, allowing them – and educating them – to give their children nutritious food and stimulate them through play. Health clinics were given incentives to support them. Swift action can bring immense benefits to a generation. Bodies and brains develop fastest in the womb and in the first two years after birth; it is hard for those who fall behind to catch up later. When we talk of children growing to their full potential, we speak more literally than we realise.

How to Grow Your Own Supply of Turmeric Indoors

Turmeric is a golden colored, strongly flavored ancient spice with a wide range of health benefits.  Renowned for centuries as both food and medicine, turmeric has resurfaced within the health and nutrition communities thanks to curcumin — the healing substance that supplies its vibrant color.


Turmeric not only adds flavor to food, it also has scores of healing properties.  At present, there have been thousands of peer-reviewed articles published proving the health benefits of this phenomenal plant.


How to Grow Turmeric Indoors


If you enjoy growing your own food, and if you find the spice to be expensive, you’ll be surprised to find out how easy it is to grow your own supply of this ancient spice in your home.


Turmeric is a perennial shrub native to Southern Asia.  Like ginger, turmeric does not propagate seeds.  The plant produces rhizomes (roots) with a deep orange flesh.  When the rhizomes are dried, they can be ground to make the familiar vibrant, yellow powder.


Growing turmeric indoors is easy — requiring only a few items and simple steps to follow.


Since this flowering plant is not small, you should select a pot, or container, with good drainage holes — at least 14 inches by 14 inches.


You will also need a large, firm turmeric rhizome that has plenty of bumps, or buds.  Each bump, or bud, is capable of growing a sizable plant.


Most garden stores don’t sell turmeric rhizomes.  Nevertheless, you can find them in some health or whole food stores.  Indian food stores may also be a great supply source for you, as well.


Follow these simple steps:


  • Break a larger rhizome into a small rhizome piece that has two or three buds.

  • Fill your pot with rich organic soil, which is lightly moist, but well drained.

  • Place the small rhizome piece about two inches below the surface of the soil, with the buds facing up.

  • Water the container.

That’s it!


Caring for Your Plant


To be successful in growing turmeric indoors, you should give your plant a climate that mimics its natural home as much as possible.


Turmeric grows best in a warm, humid climate.  It also likes water.  Keep the soil moist, particularly in hot, dry climates. Water it at least once every two days.  The plant also likes to be misted frequently, so misting it with a spray bottle once a day is suggested.  But don’t allow your plants to sit in water — turmeric needs good drainage.


However, water your plant less often if you live in cooler climates. The key is to keep the soil from ever getting soggy.


Fertilize your plant regularly, as well.


Harvesting Your Plant


It takes between six to 10 months for the edible rhizomes to mature.  In the mean time, while the rhizomes are maturing, you can harvest and eat the stems and leaves.


But the real benefit of growing this renowned plant comes from its rhizomes, or roots.


After six months, check the rhizomes regularly to see if they’re large enough — about the size of ginger.  The rhizomes are best if they are harvested all at once, so, dig up all the rhizomes from the pot when they are large enough.


For the next planting season, you can also take one of the healthy rhizome pieces you just grew and plant it the same way you planted the first one.  However, you should change the soil, because the original plant probably depleted most of the soil’s nutrients.


Storage and Use


Turmeric rhizomes should be kept in a cool, dry place.  When you are ready to use them, follow these directions:


  • Boil the rhizome, or root, for 45 minutes.

  • Let the rhizome dry for about one week.

  • Peel the root while wearing gloves to prevent dying your hands bright yellow.

  • Grind the peeled rhizomes into the healthy and tasty spice that is used in so many recipes.

Turmeric is a super spice. Many experts believe the plant may have over 600 potential preventive and therapeutic applications.

Chronic fatigue syndrome – sometimes called ME (myalgic encephalomyelitis) – is a sad tale for everyone involved. It is a debilitating illness that affects about 250,000 children and adults in the UK alone, wrecking lives as people are unable to hold down a job and are sometimes left bed-bound for years on end.


Unfortunately these patients have not been treated well – their illness is often dismissed or belittled, leading to much anger, misinformation and argument. There are claims of foul play, with issues over freedom of information and sharing of trial data; this week it was claimed that sexism is part of the reason those with ME struggle to get the proper treatment. My colleagues, Professors Trudie Chalder and Michael Sharpe, and I have spent our careers trying to improve care for patients with CFS/ME. At the heart of this story is the Pace trial we have been conducting since 2005.


For many years Nice (the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, which oversees healthcare evidence) recommended just two treatments – graded exercise therapy (GET) and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) – because it had the best evidence that these therapies worked. However, many patients were not using them, following instead a self-guided treatment called “pacing”: listening to the messages from their bodies and pacing themselves – trying not to do too much, wary of pushing themselves to a point where they might make the illness worse. The idea of doing exercise therapy was scary for some patients, worried that over-exertion would exacerbate their ill-health. The idea that CBT, a talking treatment, might help, raised fears that the illness was regarded as “merely psychological”, or even “all in the mind”.


With so much uncertainty and fear among patients, we wanted to find out which of these treatments worked best and whether they were safe. So we ran a large trial with 640 patients that would seek to replicate earlier studies, but on a much bigger scale. All those who took part were given specialist care and randomly allocated to also receive either pacing therapy, CBT, GET, or nothing extra. We had involvement from CFS/ME community, and the research was overseen by independent committees looking at data, safety and how the trial was run.


The results of our study, published in The Lancet in 2011, were clear – those patients given CBT or GET experienced significantly greater improvements in both symptoms and ability to do things, compared with either pacing therapy or specialist medical care alone. Not only were CBT and GET more effective: crucially, they were just as safe as the other treatments when done correctly.

Our results confirmed the earlier smaller trials, and strengthened the evidence upon which the recommendations of Nice were based. Added to this, a recent Cochrane review (a summary of all the evidence, and considered the gold standard in medical research) also concluded that exercise is a safe and effective treatment. In short, CBT and GET are safe, can definitely help some people and are more effective than other treatments: but, as with all treatments in medicine, they cannot help everyone.


From here on this should have become a happier story. However, some of the ensuing newspaper headlines – such as “Got ME? Just get out and exercise, say scientists” – gave the misleading impression that patients just needed to pull themselves together, or even that they were making it all up. In our clinics we had seen far too much suffering to ever think this illness could be dismissed in this way.


Our research, and that of our colleagues in this field, has attracted its fair share of criticism. Some campaigners have even called for the research to be stopped, the findings retracted, and CBT and GET abandoned completely as they cause harm. One recent focus of criticism has been whether CBT and GET can actually bring about recovery or remission from the illness, not just reduce the symptoms. And by recovery we mean recovery from a patient’s present episode of illness – which is not necessarily the same as being cured, as someone might fall ill again.


To address this we did another test on the data, and found that 22% of people could be considered as recovered with either CBT or GET. Though not a large proportion it was about three times more than the recovery rates achieved by the other two treatments. Other studies showed similar proportions recovering after CBT.


In the latest step in this saga, a blog that hasn’t gone through the rigours of scientific peer-review, or being published in a journal claims that CBT and GET are not as effective as we reported. The authors got their figures by tweaks such as increasing the pass-grade for what counted as recovery, and excluding patients who had reported themselves as “much better”.


Whichever way the data is viewed, patients get better results from CBT and GET – both confirmed as safe – than they do from pacing or medical care alone.


This whole affair is perhaps saddest for the patients themselves, whose suffering has been neglected for far too long. However, there is hope. First, the important message for patients is that it is possible to get treatment that will help them improve and for some to recover. Second, we agree with campaigners that we need more research into the causes and treatments of CFS/ME. However, if their campaign puts people off trying CBT and GET, it will be the patients themselves who will suffer the most.

World Bank to name and shame countries that fail their stunted children

The president of the World Bank has warned he will name and shame countries that fail to tackle the malnourishment and poor growth of their children, as part of a mission to rid the world of stunting.


Jim Yong Kim, the former physician who heads the Bank, told the Guardian he would take to the podium at the World Economic Forum in Davos every year to point the finger at governments who failed to live up to promises to tackle a scourge affecting tens of millions of children.


Kim said stunting – which refers to children with a height considerably below the average for their age – was a humanitarian disaster but also an economic issue that held back nations. Malnutrition, the lack of stimulation and toxic environments take their toll on children’s brain development, modern neuroscience shows.


For the sake of their children but also their countries’ future prosperity in a world that increasingly needs an educated workforce with technological skills, governments must take action, said Kim, adding that equality of opportunity was meaningless when children started with such disadvantage. The problem is huge. In India 38.7% of children are stunted, in Pakistan 45% and in the Democratic Republic of the Congo 70%.


“Everyone puts all their eggs in the equality of opportunity basket,” said Kim. “But we’re essentially lying when 25% of children in the world are stunted. Inequality is baked into the brains of 25% of all children before the age of five. So the only way that we can realistically say there is equality of opportunity is if we bring stunting down to zero.”


Stunting around the world

There were certainly other issues, he added, such as the competence of schools. But there was little point complaining that children in the DRC could not read a single letter after going through three or four years of schooling. “It might not be because the education’s bad,” he said.


“It’s a stain on our collective conscience. I think we can start a global movement. My goal is to cut stunting in half. We have 14 years until 2030. We can cut stunting in half in seven years and then end stunting in the world by 2030. That is the only way we can look ourselves in the mirror and say there is equality of opportunity in the world,” he said.


Kim pointed to a World Bank-supported programme in Peru as an example of what is possible. It gave conditional cash transfers to the mothers of stunted children, enabling and educating them to give their children nutritious food and stimulation through play. Similar incentives were given to health clinics to support them. If the children did well, monthly payments continued. “It was the first time we tried this aggressive, what we called a demand-side intervention. They went from 28% in the mid-2000s to 14% in seven years,” he said.


“We’re going to say to every country in the world that has a problem with stunting, we’re ready to bring you the Peru formula. We’re willing to provide financing for these conditional cash transfers. Conditional cash transfers are great anyway. They help poor people. They stimulate the economy, they are a great thing to do.

“But you have to start making an effort at reducing stunting. Or else every year I’m going to stand up in front of all the potential investors in your country and say – you’re not making any progress on stunting. This has very serious implications for the quality of your workforce into the future,” he said.


Scientists have found that all children, regardless of race, should grow 25cm in their first year of life and 12cm in the second.


Only recently has the impact on the brain been explored. Imaging shows fewer neural connections in the brains of stunted children than in those of children who have grown well. That does not necessarily mean they are damaged for life, but their ability to learn can be impaired.


“This is probably the root of intergenerational poverty,” said Kim. “Stunted women who are malnourished become pregnant. Just because they were stunted and malnourished doesn’t mean that their children have to be, but they probably end up not having sufficient nutrition when they are pregnant and they give birth and their children are stunted and it just goes on.”


Technological change means that countries will have ever fewer low-skilled jobs in agriculture and manufacturing. “In that case, the most important infrastructure we can invest in is grey matter infrastructure,” he said.


Many people, including the Nobel economic sciences laureate Amartya Sen, have been arguing for years that investing in people is the way to growth. “I think that with the new science of stunting we have now the direct link. If you don’t have light manufacturing and you don’t have low-skilled work in agriculture, you’re left with mostly services. If you are going to compete in the service economy you’re almost certainly going to have to be digitally competent. And you’re almost certainly going to have to be able to learn throughout your lifetime.


“What I’m arguing is you need to make first and foremost an investment in your people and specifically you need to make an investment in the grey matter of your children.”


Kim believes governments will respond. In 2002, when he was head of the HIV department of the World Health Organisation, he launched a campaign to get 3 million people on antiretroviral treatmentby 2005 and let it be known which countries were lagging behind. Known as 3 by 5, it was controversial, but the initiative resulted in a rapid increase in access to the drugs. There are now 17 million people taking them.


What is stunting?


Childhood stunting is a huge problem worldwide, affecting an estimated 162 million children under five in 2012. These are children whose height is considerably below the average for their age. They are below the 5th centile on the child growth charts of the World Health Organisation – which means that fewer than 5% of healthy children would be expected to be their size.


Undenutrition is the prime cause of stunting. Children can be born to a malnourished mother, so they have not grown properly in the womb, or they can have too little nutrition in the first years of life. Stunting can also be the result of recurrent infections such as diarrhoea in places where sanitation is poor. If children are stunted at the age of two, it is unlikely that their growth will catch up with the norm. They are likely to be small and underweight.


Stunted children tend to have poor cognitive development, with underdeveloped brains. Malnourished children also have little energy, resulting in apathy and a lack of curiosity, which means they are unable to learn and are unlikely to be able to escape poverty.

World Bank to name and shame countries that fail their stunted children

Former NSW premier Kristina Keneally, the patron of the Stillbirth Foundation, says she is “incredibly disappointed” that an ABC journalist responded so insensitively to a media release from the foundation about the number of babies born dead each year.


On Thursday the Stillbirth Foundation issued a press release with the news that Australian Bureau of Statistics data revealed that stillbirth claimed the lives of more than 1,700 babies each year – or five babies every day.


The brusque emailed response from one journalist at the ABC was: “Don’t care, take me off your list thanks”.


When Keneally was told about the email she decided to make it public to illustrate how hard it was to get the story of stillbirth in Australia in the public eye.


The mother of a stillborn child herself, Keneally tweeted the email with the ABC staffer’s name obscured.

“One of the biggest challenges when it comes to stillbirth is getting people comfortable enough to talk about it,” Keneally told Guardian Australia. “I know how hard it is to talk about it. I have been trying to talk about it since 1999.


“I don’t understand how any human being could get an email that said 1,700 babies died last year and answer with I don’t care.”


On Friday morning the ABC apologised.


“This is not a sentiment endorsed by the ABC and we apologise for any offence it has caused,” an ABC spokesman told Guardian Australia.


Keneally said the ABC was generally supportive of the cause, which made it all the more shocking.


“The ABC has been pretty good to us,” she said.


“The ABC ran an entire Australian Story on my experience of being the mother of a stillborn child; the ABC has often run stories in the past about stillbirth. The fact that this person thought that a flippant and disrespectful response was appropriate to send back to the Stillbirth Foundation shouldn’t condemn the entire organisation but it should mean that there is some counselling given to that individual.


The ABC’s AM program interviewed Keneally and the foundation’s CEO, Victoria Bowring, on Friday in a segment organised before the email was sent.


“Sure journalists have to deal with lots of bad-news stories,” Keneally told Guardian Australia. They have to become a bit harder, a bit immune, I get that. I work in a newsroom. But to physically write those words ‘don’t care’ and to send it back to the very organisation that is trying to raise awareness one of the most tragic circumstances a family can experience? I don’t understand the thought process that thinks that is an appropriate response.


“There is a genuine lack of awareness about stillbirth. They think it is something that happens in their grandmother’s generation. They think it doesn’t happen anymore. They are shocked when they find out the rate of stillbirth in Australia and they’re shocked because it is so hard for the families who have gone through this to talk about it openly.


“Doctors also don’t talk to women and families about the risk in pregnancy and we don’t do a very good job in society of talking about grief and loss.


“This is the most tragic and horrifying form of grief and loss.”


In 1999, Keneally gave birth to a daughter, Caroline, who didn’t survive.


“Until we can get them to talk about it we won’t be able to get the funding we need.”

Suicide kills six men a day. Here are three strategies that can help stop it | Glen Poole

Suicide kills eight people a day in Australia, six of them men, and the latest figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics on Wednesday, revealed that male suicides have increased by 41% in the past decade, from 1,624 deaths a year in 2006 to 2,292 suicides in 2015.


Male suicide costs the economy an estimated $ 13.75bn a year. If we closed the gender suicide gap and reduced male suicide to the same level as female suicide, we could save the lives of more than 1,500 Australian men a year and save the economy an annual $ 9.3bn.


With stakes this high, why are we consistently failing to stop male suicide?


According to the American suicidologist, David Lester, all of the main strategies currently used to prevent suicide, are more effective at helping suicidal women. With two women a day dying by suicide, it’s vital we continue to develop our capacity to prevent female suicide and when three-quarters of Australians who kill themselves are men, we can and must more to stop male suicide.


Doing more doesn’t necessarily mean spending more. As Senator Penny Wong said in June, existing funding and resources are failing to reach men. Earlier this year, for example, the Black Dog Institute launched Lifespan, a $ 14.7m suicide prevention project which aims to reduce suicide by 21% with a range of strategies such as training GPs. Yet we all know that men make fewer GP visits on average and are less likely to benefit from such approaches. Even the most sophisticated suicide prevention initiatives, it seems, are failing to consider the gendered impact of their strategies.


It’s not that the suicide prevention sector is unwilling to think about gender. Lifeline’s CEO, Pete Shmigel, has spoken passionately about the need to tackle female suicide by understanding “what’s driving despair and what builds resilience so women are empowered in their emotional lives, as well as their political, social and economic lives”. Yet when it comes to talking about male suicide, he becomes oddly monosyllabic, saying things like “we have to do a better job, us blokes, of talking about our stuff”.


When it comes to suicide and gender, we’re great at pointing the finger at “blokes” for not talking, but don’t reflect on the irony that while many of us can talk freely and fluently about women’s issues, even smart, powerful men like Shmigel, appear to find talking about men’s issues a bit awkward and uncomfortable.


So what could we do differently? When writing the book, You Can Stop Male Suicide, I concluded that there are three simple, but by no means easy, strategies that can help us stop male suicide.


Firstly, we need to get better at tackling the social issues that men and boys face, rather than falling back on tired, ineffective stereotypes of stubborn, stoical blokes, who refuse to talk or get help.


Male suicide is a solution-based behaviour that some men turn to when dealing with problems they can neither fix, nor cope with. It is the product of a whole host of men’s issues we are collectively failing to solve, leaving too many distressed men viewing suicide as the best possible solution to the problems they face.


There are a number of social issues that affect men more profoundly in terms of suicide risk, including unemployment, relationship issues, being separated from their kids, being a victim of violence or abuse, alcohol and substance abuse, long-term illness, homelessness, social isolation and mental health disorders.


We also know that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and males who identify as gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex are at increased risk of suicide. Our failure to tackle men’s issues in general or consider how gender intersects with factors like culture and sexuality, is hindering our efforts to prevent male suicide.


Secondly, we need to get better at helping men. In Queensland, for example, the department for health has acknowledged that around one in four men who suicide, die within a week of receiving help from the health service. We need to stop saying “why are men so useless at getting help” and ask ourselves “why are we so useless at helping men”.


Finally, we need to shift the balance of suicide prevention work from generic approaches that are better at helping women and girls, to gendered approaches that are better at helping everyone, men and boys included.


Such a task requires progressive thinkers to look beyond the binary narrative of gender issues, that tells us that “women HAVE problems and men ARE problems”.


Every time we put the blame for male suicide on men not talking or getting help, we re-enforce unhelpful, macho beliefs that men should be strong, powerful and self-reliant.


A more evolved view of masculinity requires us to ask ourselves how we get better at helping men, how we get better at listening to men and how we get better at tackling the social issues that men and boys face, not least of which is the fact that suicide kills more than 2,000 Australian men a year.

  • The very first and most important step is sanitizing the wounded area. Wash it with mild soap, saline solution or an anti- bacterial disinfectant.

  • Once the wound is thoroughly cleaned, dry it so that no water is left.

  • Carefully apply an antibiotic cream and leave the wound for ten to fifteen minutes.

  • Once the cream begins to dry, cover the area of the bite with a band aid or bandage. Avoid placing cotton as it will stick to the cream covering the wound and can result in infection.

  • Once the bandage is on, ensure that you change it regularly to avoid staph and other bacterial infections. In case you develop symptoms like vomiting and fever after few days, rush to a doctor and seek medical treatment to treat the infection which in some cases can become life threatening.

  • To reduce inflammation and redness around the wound, you can apply ice packs and ice compressions ten minutes every day. It will numb the area around the wound and decrease pain and inflammation.

If you follow the mentioned steps carefully, your camel spider bite will completely heal in a couple of weeks. In case of other complications, your doctor may advice cleaning of the wound, scraping off the area of the bite, tetanus injections and strong antibiotic course for a few weeks.

The Science Behind Skeletal Muscle Memory and Exercise

Imagine that you are a marathon runner, an Olympic swimmer or a professional football player for the NFL. (This shouldn’t be too hard to do as most of us have dreamed about this at one point or another in our lives.)


You train for months and months and even years to run a marathon, swim in the Olympics or play professional football. You train for hours and hours in the weight room, on the field or swimming laps. After years of this consistent training routine, you’re ready for that race or game.


After the event is over, you take a few months off. You rest up and help your body repair before beginning your next training session. After nine months of “rest”, you jump back into the weight room or dive in the pool.


Your muscles should be able to pick right up where they left off, right? Maybe not…


Do Muscles Retain Memory?


We all know the main benefits of exercise: fat and weight loss, building and toning muscle, lowering cholesterol and the risks for other diseases. However, there are also some little-known facts and benefits of exercise that make a big impact, such as improved cognitive functions, reduced depression and anxiety symptoms, sleep quality and even skeletal muscle function.


Although the benefits of exercise are seemingly endless, scientists and medical researchers are still puzzled with just how much regular and consistent exercise positively impacts skeletal muscle functions, and particularly the memory of muscle functions.


In fact, studies have shown that high-intensity and regular, consistent training results in many physiological, structural, biochemical, and transcriptional changes, although many of these changes aren’t permanent after a period of rest from training.


In contrast, other research has shown that regular, consistent, and repetitive exercise and training is often lost if and when an individual stops exercising, leading to the theory that skeletal muscles don’t retain memory.


What the Studies Show


A medical research team at the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden studied the impact of endurance training on the physiological, structural, biochemical, and transcriptional changes of skeletal muscle memory in endurance and high-intensity training.


As a part of the study, researchers recruited 23 individuals to participate in the study over a three-month period and a nine-month period respectively.


The first three-month training period, one leg underwent significant training. After nine months of careful study, 12 out of the 23 participants participated in a second training that involved training both legs.


After performing a biopsy from both legs before and after each training session, it was concluded that muscle cells represented approximately 3400 genes differently as a result of endurance, training, and exercise.


Data Analysis and Discovery


The data output and analysis of this study showed that the outcome of the performance tests conducted were collected at different points throughout the study. The trained leg that went through training through both time periods was compared with the untrained leg.


Although there were a number of transcriptional changes as a direct result and impact of exercise, after a nine-month period of no training or exercise, those specific exercise and training-induced differences were no longer present in the trained and untrained legs, leading medical researchers and biologists to believe that skeletal muscle cannot retain memory.


Authors of the study explain, “Although there were several differences in the physiological and transcriptional responses to repeated training, no coherent evidence of an endurance training-induced transcriptional skeletal muscle memory was found.”


Nothing Tastes as Good as GENES Feel…


Skeletal muscle is highly adaptable to different environments and conditions, such as regular, consistent endurance and even high-intensity training. In the study discussed, as well as many others, individuals who participate in regular exercise have a particular gene present in their skeletal muscle tissue.


The presence of this gene has piqued researchers’ interest levels, and their studies and persistent research have shown that this gene can be regulated with different variations of training.


This conclusion also shows that the presence of this gene is also associated with proteins, which are also present in the post-training skeletal muscle tissue.


Regular and consistent exercise actually changes the activity of the gene, promoting the development and presence of new proteins. Now, you would think that the proteins released by the gene would remain dominant and present even throughout a rest period, or a period without consistent training. However, studies are showing quite the opposite…


Anyone trying to get on the weight loss and fitness train have likely heard the motivating quote, “Nothing feels as good as skinny feels” to help them maintain discipline in eating right, dieting, and exercise. And although those skinny “genes” feel great after months and months of rigorous, highly intensive training, we may understand just really what happens with our “genes” when we give up exercise.


If we give up on exercise and forget all of our hard work and diets, those skinny “genes” become a distant memory – both on the inside and the outside.


In the End, We Are All Different…


Although extensive studies and research have been dedicated to the study we outlined above, the truth is that a global study has yet to be conducted. With that fact to consider, it is possible that other individuals who follow the same training and endurance track followed by a long-term period of rest may find that their muscles do “remember” a training sequence, making it easier to pick back up where they left off.


However, there is also a lack of studies and research that thoroughly investigate the results of consistent, regular training in the same individual.


All in all, these situations have gained the interest of medical researchers, biologists, and scientists, and we can certainly expect to see more time, information, and long-term research being dedicated to this theory.

We experience experts when we first go to school. We learn from our teachers that A comes before B, that 1 comes before 2, and left is the opposite of right.


Then we grow up.


Nowadays, expertise means nothing when everyone’s an expert.


Ever since Al Gore invented the internet, people have been complaining about how everyone thinks they are an expert.


People have become their own travel agents.
People diagnose their own illnesses with online checklists of their symptoms.
Parents weigh in on other people’s parenting choices, glorifying their credentials by stating they are a mom, so they know.


This has been going on forever despite this being a devaluation of actual expertise.


When everybody is an “expert”, nobody is an expert.


Unfortunately, real experts aren’t appreciated for their years of study, dedication to the field, and specialized knowledge.


When your neighbor says something it is now given equal weight to what is said by actual experts who are actually involved in something that affects the entire population.


Scientists are brushed aside as having an “agenda”, or tied into a large corporation, or not having a real-life understanding, while those with their compelling stories and gut feelings know better.


Career politicians rant like they know everything about everything, and all they need is to be able to give a speech as proof that they understand everything about everything, despite their speech being written by another “expert”. Despite their knowledge about how to save the world, nothing ever happens to accomplish that. Yet somehow the corporations always flourish.


So, while it is so easy to get a message out, maybe it’s time to go back to assess the quality of the message.


Hell, if we got rid of the industrial-scale production of things like food or energy or clothing or education, we would somehow save money and learn once again how to love our neighbors through bartering and sharing.


People want to make their own schools rather than rely on formalized educational institutions. After all, just because a physician only gets two hours of nutritional training in school because their curriculum is paid for by Big Pharma, why shouldn’t we accept that true healing only involves a medication or a surgery to relieve a symptom? It’s a total waste of time to address the cause.

Come on, Monsanto has ben around for so long and how can anyone know better than them and how can an organic farmer have more knowledge and expertise that a corporation that espouses feeding the world?


Would-be writers avoid the culling and gatekeeping of the professional publishing industry and instead upload their manuscripts to self-publishing sites. Who cares if the publishing industry is so over whelmed and rejects so much? Obviously, if it doesn’t meet their standards what’s the value anyway?


People watch more homemade videos on their phones than professionally produced programming on TV and we all know that the mainstream media is the best and most objective and honest of all.


Music? Anyone can cut their own album in their back bedroom with a laptop and an app. How can that compare to spending a fortune to do it right?


And, why hire a professional photographer for your wedding when your buddy has an iPhone7?


Then we hear about “artisanal cooking, which is just a marketing tool for stuff that is basically “homemade”. I wonder how bread, for example, is made is made in an industrial kitchen and then called “artisanal”? Artisanal means that something is made by using traditional, non-mechanical methods, kind of like how grandma used to do it.


The empowerment of the individual to to master all things is sweet elementary school thinking of the A B, 1 2, left right thinking. But why can’t it work? Sometimes clumsy hands are more earnest and loving than the professional touch.


Understand that if you are self taught or operate with the kind of structure that keeps buildings from falling, keeps lies from getting on the front page, which is usually what happens when mainstream prevails, integrity provides a process for correction if mistakes are made.


Regardless of the path, the element of human genius comes with expert knowledge and dedication to truth and honesty. And only through dedication of one’s life to master a subject and present it in a truthful manner, even if it means going against the tide, exemplifies integrity.

And yet I hear on several occasions …’my client has cancer and really doesn’t want to change his or her diet, she is doing conventional treatment, wants to continue eating candy and junk and fighting for her life doesn’t want to hear about alternative treatments because they are so expensive and her insurance won’t cover it.’  What’s even more disturbing is- we give big kudos to the women in the walk for the BIG cancer Corporations because they are “fighting the WAR” and they have so far survived the ‘so called battle’, while being sponsored by the very toxic foods corporations that may cause their cancer! So the question remains: “In what reality do we live in when we cut, poison and burn loved ones with cancer”? (1)


Over the years we (collective) have not made strives in the prevention of cancer because  the battle and war against cancer can be directly related to politics and what corporations and bankers back with their dollar.(2) Fact: Cancer is profitable for Big Oil Companies and Bankers.


Standard Oil was of the foundation upon which all of the Rockefeller industries have been built. One being the AMA and Sloan Kettering Cancer Hospital. The keystone of this mammoth industrial empire was the Chase National Bank, now renamed the Chase Manhattan Bank.
The Rockefeller’s own the largest drug manufactures in the world, and use all of their other interests to bring pressure to increase the sale of drugs. The fact that most of the 12,000 separate drug items on the market are harmful is of no concern to the Drug Trust…(3)


Some drug ads are powered by JAMA,(4) with its biggest single advertiser in the 1940s- Phillip Morris. (Camel cigarettes had the largest booth at the AMA’s 1948 convention, boasting in its ads that “More doctors smoke Camels than any other cigarette.”)(5)


Sometimes as a coach, I feel we’re up against such an enormous wall.  I hear we are suppose to thank our walls and learn from our walls, however in reality I want to see ‘cancer walls’ broken and crumble.  In the back of my mind -I’m asking,  ‘are we going to have these wall for another 100 years?’ Are we not ready to face the truth?(6)


The truth is: The industry wants to see cancer patients die.


So the next question is: ‘why don’t people trust themselves to make a more positive decision in their health?  If they really wanted to live, why wouldn’t they want to make changes that would be within their reach and under their control?  WHY?  And the only reason I hear is, “FEAR”.


What feeds fear? 


Denying self-love- Does fear surround your ability to love yourself right now for who you are? What organ, muscle, or tissue do you feel this fear? Identify. Stop to listen.


Indecisiveness- Who makes the decisions in your life? Can you make a decision to be well? Can you change your story, in order to change your life?


Time- How many times a day do you tell yourself you don’t have time for this or that? Time is not your enemy, beliefs based in fear are.  Journal what beliefs are false for you. Categorize them. What do you need to hold onto and what beliefs can you let go?


A Poor Diet- Leaves the mind and body with plenty of toxic side-effects. These play a role in uncontrollable fear-based emotions. After months or years of disrespecting your body with an abundance of alcohol and high sugary products, it’s next to impossible to feel well. Sugar controls the mind and body and leads to increasing fears, depression and poor immunity. Take the path to increasing whole foods and ditching foods that keep you in a state of fear and sickness.


Fear is not only an emotion, it’s a way of being. When beliefs are challenged, fear and denial set in.  We become very uncomfortable and our minds are filled with anxiety. It comes from being confused and feeling helpless and this confusion doesn’t allow one to take control or face the truth. We need the truth in order to heal. One truth being.. the body has the inept ability to heal itself.


How can you get help? In my book, there are three issues I talk about often to clients and they include: digestion, hormonal and mitochondria health. These are involved with all bodily functions. When we get these to work optimally the body works at the cellular level to give energy and all elimination systems work properly to remove toxic waste. The result is our body’s natural defense system, inflammation, is relieved.


What disrupts these famous 3?


The answer is: low frequency foods. These include but are not limited to: mac & cheese, frozen waffles, cereals, fried foods, donuts, breads, rBGH dairy and cheese, sodas and conventional produce.

Meditation, along with yoga, is a scientific approach to control your thoughts and focus the energy towards productive purposes. We all know that it is difficult to teach someone how to sleep, similarly, it is quite challenging to teach meditation.


However, with a good amount of practice and determination, you can experience the benefits of meditation, along with the relaxed state of mind it produces, and enhanced day-to-day awareness (also termed as being ‘in the moment’).


It takes time to experience the results of meditation practice. Especially for absolute beginners in meditation, it requires patience without expecting a miracle to happen. Many people find it best to begin with meditation sessions, many of which are often available either privately (through businesses aimed at teaching meditation), publicly (within local government funded health clubs/leisure centres), as an extension of religious organisations (many Buddhist monasteries offer meditation classes without any commitment apart from a small donation when taking part in a session) and what is probably the most common starting point in the last few years, through online instruction, also known as guided meditation, of which many videos exist online, especially on YouTube.


Guided meditation via online sources however can be a little hit and miss, and it can be difficult to know how much prior experience the creators of videos have had from instruction via more professional sources. For this reason, many meditation instructors offer their own guided meditation courses on CD/DVD and even to download via their website. It is highly recommended you begin using one of the prior institutions before going directly to YouTube as your main instruction for meditation.


Guided meditation from a professional instructor is by far the easiest way for beginners to get started. Once you have a good source of instruction; you can begin meditation lessons in your own home. Most people prefer to wear headphones and play the instructions through their phones, as this allows you to undertake the guided meditation anywhere, while the headphones allow the removal of all external noise, and focuses you solely upon the music and instruction being given. If you live alone and in a quiet area, you may prefer to play the instruction directly from your computer speakers.


To experience the positive results from meditation, of which the most common benefit is a lasting clear and euphoric/blissful mindset, regular, constant and continuous practice is essential.


Meditation practice relaxes your mind from stress, anxiety and worries. How does it happen? It occurs once your thoughts subside. Thoughts subside during the process of meditation.


As a beginner in meditation, it is best practice to close your eyes and focus fully on the breath. Focusing on breath means to just observe the rhythm of your breath. For the beginners in meditation, you can just feel the inhalation and exhalation process that happens naturally.


Why choose breathing for meditation? The reason is that breathing is the only process that happens in your body without any intervention. Sometimes you are aware of breathing, but most of the times you are not consciously aware.


The more care and attention you give in preparing for meditation, the more positive the results.


Other important aspects to consider when beginning meditation practice:


Place: It is always better to have an exclusive location for meditation practice. A calm and serene place that calms your mind is the best place for meditation – especially for beginners in meditation practice.


Time: You have to be punctual in sitting for meditation practice. As a beginner in meditation, choose the early dawn hours for your mind to get focused on breath. After a deep sleep, your mind is fully fresh and thoughts are more under control.


Sitting Posture: For the mind to focus easily on breath, your spine should be straight during meditation. Sit in a comfortable posture in the initial stages. Crossed leg posture in yoga is more convenient, but this posture may be challenging for beginners. So, choose the most comfortable posture that suits you.


Breath: It is always better not to put any conscious effort into breathing. It is best for it to happen naturally. As it happens, make the process slow with awareness and perceive it as a natural rhythm. Enjoy the moments in between the inhalation and exhalation.


Point of concentration: You may want to choose the best point of concentration to start with meditation. Sometimes it is the point between eye-brows; sometimes it is concentration on breathing. For some people, it is the heart. Any point you choose, make sure that the focus of your mind does not leave the point.
