To improve mental health, start with benefits system | Sarah Chapman

Two-thirds of British adults have experienced mental health problems at some point in their lives, according to the Mental Health Foundation. For people forced to use a food bank like ours, the figures are even higher.

It’s no wonder. The NHS says depression can be caused by “an upsetting or stressful life event, such as bereavement, divorce, illness, redundancy and job or money worries”. People who use food banks face many of these – often at the same time.

A blister from new work boots leads to an ulcer; you’re struggling to walk round the building site and the foreman lays you off with no warning and no sick pay. It takes weeks to access sickness benefits. Your marriage breaks down and you’re suddenly homeless. This is just one story, of a man in his 60s facing an onslaught most of us would struggle to withstand.

Our research highlights that poor mental health is both a cause and a consequence of poverty. Of 20 food bank users we interviewed during one week, 18 said they had experienced poor mental health – stress, anxiety and depression – in the last 12 months. Six said they had considered or attempted suicide in the past year.

Philip*, for instance, had just left hospital when he came to us, after being sectioned six weeks earlier when he attempted to take his own life. Sue*, a grandmother in her 50s, told us, “I’ve had suicidal thoughts. Sometimes I do feel it is the answer. I constantly think of different ways, you know – that can take up a whole evening”.

This is the reality of food banks across the country. Research with referrers to our food bank (such as GPs, mental health services, schools and children’s centres) highlights the same issue; nine out of 10 cite seeing poorer mental health as a direct consequence of poverty.

Time and time again, research [pdf] shows that poverty exacerbates mental health issues by increasing feelings of humiliation, fear, distrust, isolation, insecurity and powerlessness.

Insecurity when you lose your low-paid temporary job or you don’t get the hours you need in a zero-hours contract; when your benefits are due to change as a child turns five, or your Disability Living Allowance needs replacing with Personal Independence Payment; when your private landlord calls time and you join the queue at the council, desperate to be accepted on to the housing list.

Humiliation when your benefits are sanctioned for missing one appointment and “you can’t complain because they’ve got control of you by the money”, as one lady told us after being referred to our food bank by the job centre that sanctioned her. “They can do what they want with you, unless you say please and thank you, and beg.”

Policies that create appalling situations that damage people’s health make me more angry than I can say

Isolation when your “one offer” of temporary accommodation is miles away in another borough, where you don’t know anyone but you’ll still need to get your children back to primary school every day (and you’ll receive no financial help for the extra travel costs).

Fear and distrust when you are called for a medical assessment and the report bears little relation to the interview you had, and even less relation to the expert testimony of your GP, hospital consultant or support worker. Your benefit stops.

We listen to these stories every day at the food bank, keeping how we feel to ourselves as we nod, hand out tissues and make more tea. The short-sightedness of policies that worsen – sometimes even create – appalling situations that damage people’s health makes me more angry than I can say.

You try it. “The job centre told him he needed to do his job in a wheelchair,” says Asha*, mum of three, about her husband, a supermarket delivery driver whose back problems mean he can’t walk properly. “His job? It doesn’t make sense. But to even get to work, he needs to get out of his depression first. Last week he took an overdose.”

“It’s like a nightmare,” she continues. “The system makes it worse and in the end they just leave you with your problems. Any small change and you can lose everything. When it will stop?”

If politicians are serious about tackling poor mental health, our social security system needs to be strong – and for those lining up at our door every day to put food on the table for their kids, it just isn’t.

We should be a country in which people are treated with humanity, fairness, respect and compassion. We need a safety net that is more responsive to unexpected changes in circumstances and health, and less quick to penalise people for whom, at one particular moment in time, life has become an unbearable struggle. That would mean a benefits system which actually boosts people’s chances of improving their life prospects. Until then, we’ll have to keep training our volunteers in mental health issues, because we’re not just handing out food – we’re a source of solace.

The mental health benefits of boxing

If it takes a prince to alert the nation to the safety-valve powers of boxing in coping with mental stress – as Prince Harry has done this week – Frank Bruno, who has rubbed shoulders with royalty and struggled with mental health issues, will surely lead the applause.

The former world heavyweight champion, now 55, has been sectioned three times since he retired in 1996 and came perilously close to being institutionalised for life. He has suffered more through mental trauma than from any bruises to body or spirit absorbed in 45 bouts over 14 years as a professional boxer. Paradoxically, he says boxing has also saved him.

Boxing, despite its long history of tragedy and corruption on the professional side – from ring deaths to Mafia fixes – has attracted a growing constituency of keep-fit devotees in hundreds of gyms around the country, among them the singer Ellie Goulding. “It wasn’t about any change in my outward appearance,” she said last month when talking about how working out in a boxing gym helped her cope with anxiety. “It was about seeing and feeling myself get better and stronger… I truly feel that exercise – however you like to work out – is good for the soul.”

It is a sentiment echoed by Harry, who says he found refuge in the gym when the weight of his mother’s premature death 20 years ago had pushed him, “very close to a complete breakdown on numerous occasions”.

Princess Diana’s youngest son, now 32, revealed: “During those years I took up boxing, because everyone was saying boxing is good for you and it’s a really good way of letting out aggression. And that really saved me because I was on the verge of punching someone; so being able to punch someone who had pads was certainly easier.”

Last year he sparred with former three-weight world champion, Duke McKenzie, as part of the charity initiative, Heads Together, he instigated with his brother, William, and the Duchess of Cambridge.

While that entry-level introduction to the sport is some way distant from the rigours of boxing that Bruno endured, he would recognise the process.

Bruno has done much to raise awareness of bipolar disorder and it took a lot for him to admit that the effects of his illness were exacerbated as much by the mental as well as the physical demands of his trade.

Bruno said he had never felt so alive as in the immediate aftermath of winning the title against Oliver McCall in London in 1995. Nor had he ever been so alone: on top of the world at last after three failed attempts – but not for long, he suspected. In a nerve-racking defence against Mike Tyson five months later, Bruno surrendered his hard-won credibility inside three rounds.

In defeat, his marriage broke up and he was committed to a month’s treatment in the Goodmayes Clinic in Essex. It took his own iron resolve to continue the process in the gym, with the prize not a world title but his mental wellbeing. Bruno’s struggle is an ongoing one, aided by prescription medication and, pointedly, in the light of Prince Harry’s experience, a life-time commitment to exercise.

5 Benefits of Massage for Runners

Running is a great hobby that can help you maintain healthy weight, feel great and make friends. But consistent running, while toning your body, can leave it sore or pained. It’s often recommended to stretch before and after to alleviate these symptoms. However, sometimes that’s not enough. Our bodies can benefit from different kinds of stress and pain relievers. When people are stressed, spas are a great choice for relaxation. Runners can also benefit from getting some of the services they offer. Here are five benefits for runners when they get a massage.

1. Improved Flexibility

Running is a repetitious movement that puts a serious strain on our muscles and joints. Massages help relieve some of this tension. But, they can also help improve your overall flexibility. The sustained muscle contractions caused by running can lead to you feel sore and still and might even cause you to lose some of your mobility. Massages will help elongate your muscles, making your range of motion better.

2. Better Circulation

When you do an aerobic or cardio activity, your heart rate increases and so does your blood circulation. Runners are familiar with these conditions. When they stop running, however, their blood flow can slow as the body tries to recover. Massages will improve the oxygen capacity of the blood cells, making them better at moving oxygen throughout the body. The improved circulation will also assist in keeping the muscles free from soreness. It’s also known that better circulation can trigger your immune system to begin making repairs.

3. Marathon Runners

There are different types of runners but all can benefit from massages. Marathon runners also need to keep their muscles loose and remove any stiffness. Because marathon running involves longer stress, it’s necessary to have massages as part of your training program. Massages will aid in speeding up recovery and also making it easier to recover from the next one. You can also use them before a run to balance your muscles or overworking them so they don’t get tired too quickly.

4. Relaxation

Life is stressful. Even without the addition of exercising regularly and the strain placed on your body from running, you can be tense and sore. Relaxation on its own has great mental, emotional and physical health benefits. When combined with massage therapy, runners can achieve greater levels of physical relief. Massages will help unlock energy in your body that you can use before your next event or even just a workout. Another great thing about using massages for relaxation is that you can actually do some at home without professional assistance. Using something as simple as a tennis ball or foam roller, you can give yourself mini-treatments between professional visits. If you want to relieve one specific area, pause and press those sore spots for no more than 10 seconds before releasing. Be mindful of stretching out any particularly tender areas as you massage them as this will increase blood flow and feelings of stress alleviating

5. Variety of Styles

There are different types of massages. Just like each runner is different, there are different massage options that will best suit each runner. The most commonly known massage type is deep tissue. This involves working the entire muscles and focusing on specific areas of tightness or knots. This is best for when a runner needs all-over relief and does not have a targeted injury. There are also Swedish and ART massages to consider. The Swedish massage is more for simple stress relief without any deep tissue work. Active Release Technique (ART) massages focus on breaking up internal scar tissue from one particular injury. By doing so, it helps regain some mobility in the area and increases the tissue’s flexibility.

Massages are fantastic because they have benefits that cover your entire body. Whether it’s working out tension knots or just helping you feel relaxed, massages are beneficial. Runners especially can enjoy these benefits because massages will help keep their circulation normal and their limbs free of pain. They also help remove the excess wastes, like lactic acid, that build up in their legs over time. Massages will help limit the development of scar tissue and make sure you have the most complete range of motion.

7 Incredible Benefits of Cod Liver Oil

Cod liver oil has been taken as a dietary supplement for centuries. It is extracted from the liver of the Atlantic Cod (Gadus morhua), and is extremely high in Omega 3 fatty acids. This supplies us with the good fats that our bodies need, to function efficiently, and makes it a natural anti-inflammatory product. In addition, cod liver oil contains vitamins A & D and has other health benefits. These include:

1. Maintains Bone Health

Our bodies can convert sunlight into vitamin D, which is very important to develop and maintain healthy cell functions and bone metabolism. For those living in more temperament climates a vitamin D supplement is recommended. Cod liver oil can be used by people of all ages, and has been used to prevent rickets in children since 1824, as well as for older people to treat osteoporosis.

2. Decreases Cancer Symptoms

There are many different types of cancer and each comes with its own symptoms. The vitamin D and fatty acids contained in cod liver oil help to reduce these in some types of cancer, including breast cancer. It also lowers the risk of tumours developing, and helps to keep cancer that has been treated in remission.

3. Increases Fertility

Omega 3 fatty acids help to boost the production of sex hormones in both the male and female reproductive systems. The anti-inflammatory properties contained in cod liver oil also promote healthy pituitary and adrenal glands, as well as the hypothalamic system. These glands are responsible for regulating pregnancy and reproductivity.

4. Helps Control Diabetes

Irregular blood glucose levels, controlled by insulin production in the body, are the main reason that people develop diabetes. There are also many related illnesses that can be caused by having this disease, and the fatty acids contained in cod liver oil help to control these as well as regulate insulin production. Omega 3 supplements are also recommended during pregnancy to decrease the chances of the new-born developing the disease. Research is also being conducted into whether cod liver oil can be used as a diabetes treatment, in addition to preventative measure.

5. Treats Arthritis

The anti-inflammatory properties in cod liver oil help to reduce pain, joint stiffness and swelling in arthritic patients. The supplement works in the same way that many prescribed medications do, and is used alongside them to treat rheumatoid arthritis.

6. Regulates Cholesterol

Many of our diets have a high content of Omega 6 fatty acids, which can lead to increased cholesterol levels. Cod liver oil provides our bodies with Omega 3 fatty acids, which balance good fat with the bad in the body helping to lower cholesterol.

7. Improves Cardiovascular Health

Normal blood pressure and cholesterol levels within our bodies are essential for a healthy heart. Cod liver oil helps lower the number of triglycerides in our bloodstream, reducing the risk of heart disease. The Omega 3 fatty acids also help to prevent hardening of the arteries, which control the blood flow through our body and maintain proper cardiovascular health.

Apple Cider Vinegar Dosage for Optimum Health Benefits

Apple cider vinegar, a type of vinegar made from apples or cider, has a reputation for being beneficial to the health in numerous ways. But since it is a remedy for various health conditions, therefore it must be taken in the appropriate amount. In this article, we shall discuss the recommended apple cider vinegar dosage for optimum health benefits.

Apple cider vinegar in its raw and unfiltered form contains beneficial bacteria known as probiotics. These bacteria are advantageous to the gut environment in the human body. They can be helpful to treat gastrointestinal issues and boost the immune system. Comparatively, raw apple cider vinegar has more nutrient content than the pasteurized apple cider vinegar. This is because during the pasteurization process, a lot of the nutritious bulk of the living microbes- yeast and probiotic, get eliminated.

In spite of being a popular traditional remedy, the health claims of apple cider vinegar are yet to receive medical science support. However, people still believe in the potency of apple cider vinegar while doctors suppose that its effectiveness could be a placebo effect.

Apple cider vinegar dosage

Apple cider vinegar is acidic in nature. It contains high amounts of acetic acid, which is linked to aiding and benefiting different health conditions and ailments. People with acute acne, diabetes, high blood pressure, and weight issues take apple cider vinegar as a complementary remedy.

Now, apple cider vinegar isn’t a doctor prescribed medication and therefore it is difficult to estimate the correct effective dosage of apple cider vinegar. However, it is crucial to know how much of apple cider vinegar appropriate to take. People who vouch for the efficacy of apple cider vinegar usually take 1 or 2 tablespoons of it diluted with a glass of 8oz water up to three times a day on an empty stomach. Avoid taking apple cider vinegar directly as it is inherently acerbic and always remember to rinse your mouth with water after drinking cider vinegar. Otherwise, the enamel of your teeth could get eroded by the acidic nature of apple cider vinegar.

To treat nasty skin conditions like acne, eczema, etc. you can directly apply it o the affected area with a cotton dab.

Apple cider vinegar and baking soda

The constitutional acidity of apple cider vinegar may not go well with people with acute gastrointestinal problems. Therefore, to reduce the acidity baking soda is combined with apple cider vinegar. According to the American Diabetes Association, the concoction of apple cider vinegar and baking soda could be used to treat diabetes as it can possibly lower glucose level up to 20 percent when taken with a high carbohydrate meal.

You can quickly prepare this tonic of apple cider vinegar and baking soda. Simply add two tablespoons of raw apple cider vinegar in a glass. Put 1/8 tablespoon of baking soda followed by water. Drink it immediately on an empty stomach.

The tonic of apple cider vinegar and baking soda helps to alkalize the body. As we know, an acidic body is conducive to many health problems; hence to kill pathogens and inhibit the growth of diseases it is necessary to maintain our body’s pH scale. And this could be easily done by drinking apple cider vinegar and baking soda water regularly.

Three health benefits of apple cider vinegar

#1 Treats diabetes: Apple cider vinegar has the potential to treat type 2 diabetes, which is related to insulin function in the bloodstream. Medical researchers have found that apple cider vinegar is quite effective in controlling blood sugar levels. It can significantly influence our body’s response to sugar and improves insulin sensitivity. It is found that during a high-carb meal, apple cider vinegar cam improves insulin sensitivity by 19-34%, when eating 50 grams of white bread, it can reduce blood sugar by 34%, and taking 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar before sleeping reduces fasting blood sugars by 4%.

#2 Controls blood pressure: According to Brenda Skidmore, Holistic Health Expert at Disabled World, apple cider vinegar for blood pressure control is a reliable remedy. High pressure is a common condition in which the pressure of blood against the artery walls is remarkably high. The abnormality in the pressure of blood imminently leads to coronary and heart problems. Apple cider vinegar helps in balancing the body’s pH level. Its acidic nature can erode fat and phlegm depositions in the body and thereby aid in better blood circulation and lower pressure against the artery walls. Apple cider vinegar is also helpful in reducing bad cholesterol which has a positive effect on blood pressure.

#3 Aids weight loss: Apple cider vinegar for weight loss is a rather inconclusive subject. Yes, it can aid in weight loss to a certain effect but to believe that apple cider vinegar will certainly cause weight loss is a questionable claim. Before a high-carb meal, drinking apple cider vinegar will lower glucose level in the blood by blocking the digestion of starch. This will result in a reduction of calorie obtained from the food. Additionally, apple cider vinegar also lowers blood triglycerides and provides a sense of fullness, thereby reducing our food intakes. In this way, apple cider vinegar can aid in weight loss.

Apple cider vinegar has a good nutrient profile that benefits the health in various ways. It is low in sodium, cholesterol, and saturated fat, and a very good source of manganese and potassium. Yet, its acetic acid content makes it a tad bit dicey. It could erode the teeth enamel, irritate the throat, and interfere with blood thinning medications. Although two tablespoons of it diluted with 8 oz of water could hardly do any damage, it is advisable to consult with a physician before consuming apple cider vinegar to avoid side effects of drinking too much apple cider vinegar.

Benefits of Fasting

The evidence throughout time supporting fasting is incredible.

There was a guy back in ancient Greece named Aesculapius that said, “Instead of using medicine, fast”. Hippocrates recommended prolonged fasting instead of taking health-destroying pharmaceuticals, which is the God of modern day medicine.

Most of the religions in the world advocate periods of “abstinence” from food to attain physical and spiritual purity and even animals and babies, through their natural instincts, refuse to eat food when they feel ill. Yet, most people are clueless about the benefits of fasting when sick and always advise those that they care about to “Eat to keep up your strength.” During illness, there can be no worse advice to lower vitality.

When you fast there is an increase in the amount of energy available for the eliminative and cleansing process due to the absence of large amounts of food requiring digestion and assimilation, which require energy as well.

The body then is able to redirect this increased energy toward elimination of the obstructions to the vital life force in the form of toxic waste and since vitality equals the life force minus any obstructions, as they are removed higher levels of vital energy are available for more rapid elimination.

Elimination begins as soon as the first meal is missed. As the fasting proceeds, usually during the first three days and reaching its maximum by the third day, this elimination activity manifests in the appearance of a coated tongue, bad breath, headaches, muscular aches and general fatigue.

These symptoms arise due to the increase of toxins in the bloodstream being passed out of the channels of elimination. The sooner these symptoms manifest, the more toxic is the system.

Usually around the forth or fifth day a general feeling of well-being comes about.

But, and there’s always a but, this state of well-being lasts in degrees of varying intensity interspersed with periods of lack of energy and fatigue as more toxins are eliminated. At about ten days the body is able to get rid of a large amount of deep-rooted toxins and waste matter.

At that point if one experiences flulike symptoms or skin eruptions or other various eliminations, the fast is doing its job and in a short time the feeling of increased health and vigor will come back big time.

For people that have never fasted before, start with one day. Eventually, when that settles in, anywhere from three days to three weeks will be a piece of cake. When you can handle one day a couple of times, go to at least three days. From there, knock yourself out.

When fasting it’s always good to drink lots of water and freshly squeezed juices. Stay way from all the pasteurized crap that you get when you buy bottled juices and stay away from fluoridated water. We are talking about getting rid of toxins not continuing to ingest them.

Breaking the fast properly is probable more important. Remember that your body has undergone a heavy detoxification and elimination process so you want to start light and proceed slowly to heavy.

For every three days you fast you need one day of transition. Let’s say you do 10 days. Ten days equals 3 to 4 days of getting back because this process has to be a gentle process for your system. The first day should be fruits, water and fresh juices. Day 2 should be fruit, adding stewed fruits, salads, water and fresh juices. Day 3 can include soups with lentils and peas and/or a light sandwich and steamed vegetables. The more you fast the more you spread out the break-back-in.

Food for thought: you just eliminated a ton of crap from your system. Look at what put you there in the first place and decide if you really want to go back to putting back all those toxins you just got rid of.

At this point you might want to re-think what fuel you want to put in your gas tank. Remember that you are now rebuilding tissue and you should want that to be as healthy and constructive as can be.

The best would be organic, plant-based fuel. If not, it’s back to flesh and blood, GMOs, antibiotics, bovine growth hormones, MSG, aspartame, Agent Orange, and food colorings, for openers.

OK, back to the break-in. Chew you food until it turns into liquid in your mouth, at which point you drink it rather than swallow it.

Remember, it’s easy to fast but a bitch to break properly. Too much too soon or too heavy too soon can create more problems than you would ever want. Think about it: you just cleaned out your system and now it’s as if you have the system of a little baby. What do you think would happen to an infant if you tried to have it ingest
something other than mother’s milk or something that was not heavily pureed? Bye, bye baby? Hell yeah! Now substitute YOU for “baby.

Understand that the tongue is considered to be the mirror of internal health as is used as a guide to the fasting length and process.

What usually happens is that the tongue becomes heavily coated during the first three days of the fast and becomes progressively clearer until the healing crisis starts, or the fast is ended. If the fast is allowed to continue until the tongue is clear and is broken gently with wholesome food, the result will be an increase in physical well-being, vitality, mental clarity, and the body will be at peace.

The type of fast determines the rate of elimination, so, in essence, it is possible to control the elimination process.

By definition, fasting is the elimination of solid food. The strictest fast is the water fast and the order of fast in degree of elimination power is:
Water fast
Citrus juice fast
Sub-acid fruit juice fast
Vegetable juice fast

While the water and citrus juice fasts are more eliminative than the sub-acid juice or vegetable juice fasts, this doesn’t mean they are more desirable in every situation. Some situations need a slower, less dramatic elimination than others and not all people can handle citrus in excess or even go one day on water alone.

When in doubt, see a Naturopath.

The following is a list of regimens that bring about eliminations of greater or lesser degrees, in that order:
Citrus fruit mono diet (only one type of fruit and its juice)
Sub-acid mono diet (i.e. apples)
Mixed fruit diet (only one fruit type per meal; no bananas – too heavy)
Raw fruit and vegetable diet
Raw vegetable mono diet (i.e. raw carrot and raw carrot juice)
Raw fruit, raw vegetables, steamed vegetables
Raw and cooked fruit and vegetables plus complex carbohydrates (not refined)
Raw and cooked fruit and vegetables, complex carbohydrates and vegetarian protein

Some reasons for fasting are:
During any acute disease
In any case of lowered vitality or general debility
During any healing crisis
Repeatedly in most chronic diseases
To clear the mind

Also, the following juice or mono diets are frequently used:
Apple juice or mono diet:
Great alkaline diet for acidic conditions like gout or other inflammatory problems.

Grape juice or mono diet:
Great for heart problems or where heavy activity has to take place during elimination. Black grapes especially used with heart conditions. Grapes are not as eliminative as other fruit juices or mono diets.

Grapefruit juice or mono diet:
Good for liver conditions, general elimination, colds or mucous conditions. Not good for arthritis, ulcers, or hyperacidity.

Orange juice or mono diet:
Oranges are not frequently advised in too great a quantity, as they tend to upset the liver. They are used primarily in mucous and lung complaints. Excess may cause inflammation and itching of the butt.

Lemon Juice:
Diluted, lemon juice and water are highly eliminative.

Carrot juice or mono diet:
Especially useful in digestive problems like colitis or ulcers. A very alkaline juice and extremely useful in all acid conditions.

Cabbage juice:
Most effective with ulcers and commonly mixed with carrot juice for this.

Onion juice and mono diet:
Excellent for any condition with excess mucus, lung complaints, sinus congestion, colds, middle ear and Eustachian tube congestion, etc.

A couple of final words:
1. It is well worth your while to enlist the aid of a Naturopath.
2. Interestingly enough the plant world heals and the flesh world sickens.

Aloha!

Hesh Goldstein

When I was a kid, if I were told that I’d be writing a book about diet and nutrition when I was older, let alone having been doing a health related radio show for over 36 years, I would’ve thought that whoever told me that was out of their mind. Living in Newark, New Jersey, my parents and I consumed anything and everything that had a face or a mother except for dead, rotting, pig bodies, although we did eat bacon (as if all the other decomposing flesh bodies were somehow miraculously clean). Going through high school and college it was no different. In fact, my dietary change did not come until I was in my 30′s.

Just to put things in perspective, after I graduated from Weequahic High School and before going to Seton Hall University, I had a part-time job working for a butcher. I was the delivery guy and occasionally had to go to the slaughterhouse to pick up products for the store. Needless to say, I had no consciousness nor awareness, as change never came then despite the horrors I witnessed on an almost daily basis.

After graduating with a degree in accounting from Seton Hall, I eventually got married and moved to a town called Livingston. Livingston was basically a yuppie community where everyone was judged by the neighborhood they lived in and their income. To say it was a “plastic” community would be an understatement.

Livingston and the shallowness finally got to me. I told my wife I was fed up and wanted to move. She made it clear she had to be near her friends and New York City. I finally got my act together and split for Colorado.

I was living with a lady in Aspen at the end of 1974, when one day she said, ” let’s become vegetarians”. I have no idea what possessed me to say it, but I said, “okay”! At that point I went to the freezer and took out about $ 100 worth of frozen, dead body parts and gave them to a welfare mother who lived behind us. Well, everything was great for about a week or so, and then the chick split with another guy.

So here I was, a vegetarian for a couple weeks, not really knowing what to do, how to cook, or basically how to prepare anything. For about a month, I was getting by on carrot sticks, celery sticks, and yogurt. Fortunately, when I went vegan in 1990, it was a simple and natural progression. Anyway, as I walked around Aspen town, I noticed a little vegetarian restaurant called, “The Little Kitchen”.

Let me back up just a little bit. It was April of 1975, the snow was melting and the runoff of Ajax Mountain filled the streets full of knee-deep mud. Now, Aspen was great to ski in, but was a bummer to walk in when the snow was melting.

I was ready to call it quits and I needed a warmer place. I’ll elaborate on that in a minute.

But right now, back to “The Little Kitchen”. Knowing that I was going to leave Aspen and basically a new vegetarian, I needed help. So, I cruised into the restaurant and told them my plight and asked them if they would teach me how to cook. I told them in return I would wash dishes and empty their trash. They then asked me what I did for a living and I told them I was an accountant.

The owner said to me, “Let’s make a deal. You do our tax return and we’ll feed you as well”. So for the next couple of weeks I was doing their tax return, washing their dishes, emptying the trash, and learning as much as I could.

But, like I said, the mud was getting to me. So I picked up a travel book written by a guy named Foder. The name of the book was, “Hawaii”. Looking through the book I noticed that in Lahaina, on Maui, there was a little vegetarian restaurant called,” Mr. Natural’s”. I decided right then and there that I would go to Lahaina and work at “Mr. Natural’s.” To make a long story short, that’s exactly what happened.

So, I’m working at “Mr. Natural’s” and learning everything I can about my new dietary lifestyle – it was great. Every afternoon we would close for lunch at about 1 PM and go to the Sheraton Hotel in Ka’anapali and play volleyball, while somebody stayed behind to prepare dinner.

Since I was the new guy, and didn’t really know how to cook, I never thought that I would be asked to stay behind to cook dinner. Well, one afternoon, that’s exactly what happened; it was my turn. That posed a problem for me because I was at the point where I finally knew how to boil water.

I was desperate, clueless and basically up the creek without a paddle. Fortunately, there was a friend of mine sitting in the gazebo at the restaurant and I asked him if he knew how to cook. He said the only thing he knew how to cook was enchiladas. He said that his enchiladas were bean-less and dairy-less. I told him that I had no idea what an enchilada was or what he was talking about, but I needed him to show me because it was my turn to do the evening meal.

Well, the guys came back from playing volleyball and I’m asked what was for dinner. I told them enchiladas; the owner wasn’t thrilled. I told him that mine were bean-less and dairy-less. When he tried the enchilada he said it was incredible. Being the humble guy that I was, I smiled and said, “You expected anything less”? It apparently was so good that it was the only item on the menu that we served twice a week. In fact, after about a week, we were selling five dozen every night we had them on the menu and people would walk around Lahaina broadcasting, ‘enchilada’s at “Natural’s” tonight’. I never had to cook anything else.

A year later the restaurant closed, and somehow I gravitated to a little health food store in Wailuku. I never told anyone I was an accountant and basically relegated myself to being the truck driver. The guys who were running the health food store had friends in similar businesses and farms on many of the islands. I told them that if they could organize and form one company they could probably lock in the State. That’s when they found out I was an accountant and “Down to Earth” was born. “Down to Earth” became the largest natural food store chain in the islands, and I was their Chief Financial Officer and co-manager of their biggest store for 13 years.

In 1981, I started to do a weekly radio show to try and expose people to a vegetarian diet and get them away from killing innocent creatures. I still do that show today. I pay for my own airtime and have no sponsors to not compromise my honesty. One bit of a hassle was the fact that I was forced to get a Masters Degree in Nutrition to shut up all the MD’s that would call in asking for my credentials.

My doing this radio show enabled me, through endless research, to see the corruption that existed within the big food industries, the big pharmaceutical companies, the biotech industries and the government agencies. This information, unconscionable as it is, enabled me to realize how broken our health system is. This will be covered more in depth in the Introduction and throughout the book and when you finish the book you will see this clearly and it will hopefully inspire you to make changes.

I left Down to Earth in 1989, got nationally certified as a sports injury massage therapist and started traveling the world with a bunch of guys that were making a martial arts movie. After doing that for about four years I finally made it back to Honolulu and got a job as a massage therapist at the Honolulu Club, one of Hawaii’s premier fitness clubs. It was there I met the love of my life who I have been with since 1998. She made me an offer I couldn’t refuse. She said,” If you want to be with me you’ve got to stop working on naked women”. So, I went back into accounting and was the Chief Financial Officer of a large construction company for many years.

Going back to my Newark days when I was an infant, I had no idea what a “chicken” or “egg” or “fish” or “pig” or “cow” was. My dietary blueprint was thrust upon me by my parents as theirs was thrust upon them by their parents. It was by the grace of God that I was able to put things in their proper perspective and improve my health and elevate my consciousness.

The road that I started walking down in 1975 has finally led me to the point of writing my book, “A Sane Diet For An Insane World”. Hopefully, the information contained herein will be enlightening, motivating, and inspiring to encourage you to make different choices. Doing what we do out of conditioning is not always the best course to follow. I am hoping that by the grace of the many friends and personalities I have encountered along my path, you will have a better perspective of what road is the best road for you to travel on, not only for your health but your consciousness as well.

Last but not least: after being vaccinated as a kid I developed asthma, which plagued me all of my life. In 2007 I got exposed to the organic sulfur crystals, which got rid of my asthma in 3 days and has not come back in over 10 years. That, being the tip of the iceberg, has helped people reverse stage 4 cancers, autism, joint pain, blood pressure problems, migraine headaches, erectile dysfunction, gingivitis, and more. Also, because of the detoxification effects by the release of oxygen that permeates and heals all the cells in the body, it removes parasites, radiation, fluoride, free radicals, and all the other crap that is thrust upon us in the environment by Big Business.

The health benefits of growing purple potatoes

OK, I’ll admit it. In the past I haven’t been resoundingly positive about growing potatoes. That’s because on my tiny plot in Croydon I have found growing the commercial white varieties (think King Edwards) delivers crops with taste and nutrition much like those in the shops, just in exchange for a whole lot more time and effort. Compare this to the almost night and day difference between the knockout flavour of homegrown tomatoes and the sad shop-bought offerings, and in my limited space the choice is clear.

Purple spuds are packed full of the same pigments that give red wine and blueberries their health benefits

However, there are some caveats. New potatoes like Jersey Royals and the quirky-coloured “heritage” types can be far tastier fresh from the ground than what you’ll find at supermarkets. But perhaps the biggest difference is when it comes to the potential health benefits of the more leftfield varieties. And if it’s these you are after, a growing body of scientific research suggests it doesn’t get any better than the dazzling shades of purple spuds.

Packed full of the same pigments that give red wine and blueberries their potential health benefits, burgundy-hued spuds can boast a whopping three times the polyphenols of the regular white kind. In fact, varieties like “Purple Majesty” or “Violette” can contain gram-for-gram as much good stuff as the berries themselves, according to Colorado State University. My own growing trials found they produced yields up to 10 times that of blueberries per unit of space, all for a fraction of the cost of a blueberry bush.

According to the Journal of Agricultural and Food Technology, adding a 140g serving of purple potatoes twice a day to the diet of overweight, middle-aged subjects caused their blood pressure to drop almost five points within just a month – despite the fact that almost 80% of them were already on antihypotensive drugs. Such a fall could “decrease the risk of stroke by 34% and of heart disease by 21%” according to Barts and The London School of Medicine. These potatoes added 280 calories to their daily diet, but the subjects in this trial didn’t gain weight either.

OK, this may be just one study and we need a lot more research before solid conclusions can be drawn, but these results do contribute to a growing weight of evidence behind the benefits of going for purple. As these varieties are widely sold in the seed catalogues yet are still a rare find in the shops, to me it makes the case for picking them over the ubiquitous white ones a pretty strong one.

Considering that they are also just as easy to grow, taste great and provide truly hypnotic colour, it is hard to see a clear downside.

10 Benefits to Eating Millet

By Karen Brennan, MSW, NC, Herbalist, BCHN ®

What is Millet?

It is a gluten free grain that is tiny in size and round and may be white, gray, yellow or red.  Technically millet is a seed not a grain but it is categorized with grains from a culinary perspective.  It is thought to have originated in North Africa and has been consumed since prehistoric times.

What are the Benefits to Eating Millet?

  • Heart protective: The magnesium and fiber content is what makes this such as heart healthy grain. Since it also contains potassium it can aid in reducing high blood pressure.

  • Lowers your cancer, heart disease and type 2 diabetes risk: Adding WHOLE grains (not processed grains) such as millet into your diet has been shown to lower your risk for certain cancers and heart disease and reduce your risk for type 2 diabetes.

  • Fiber content: Millet contains insoluble fiber which can help prevent gallstones. The fiber content is also protective against breast cancer.  Eating fiber rich grains also lowers the incidence of colon cancer.  Fiber in millet is ideal for lowering your LDL (your “bad” cholesterol).

  • Protective against childhood asthma: This is also due to the magnesium content. Studies have shown that children consuming a diet of whole grains (and fish) have lower incidence of asthma.

  • Nutrient Dense: Millet is a good source of protein, copper, manganese, phosphorus, B vitamins and magnesium. One cup of cooked millet contains 6 protein grams, 41 carb grams 2.26 fiber grams, 1.74 fat grams and 207 calories. Of all the cereal grains, millet has the richest amino acid profile and the highest iron content.

  • The magnesium content is also beneficial for migraines and high blood pressure

  • Contains plant lignans: These are converted by healthy gut flora in our intestines into mammalian lignans which is thought to protect against breast cancer and other hormone related cancers and heart disease.

  • Can improve digestive health: Because of its fiber content, millet can aid with elimination and constipation as well as excess gas, bloating and cramping. It is the easiest of all the grains to digest due to its high alkaline ash content.

  • Can aid with detoxification: Millet is rich in antioxidants which are beneficial in neutralizing free radicals.

  • Helps to fight fatigue: It is considered among the top foods to eat to fight fatigue due to its B vitamin, iron and macro nutrient content.

How Do I Cook with Millet?

Basic cooking method

  • Before you use your millet grain you should rinse it under running water to remove any remaining left over dirt and debris.

  • After rinsing, you can cook it as one part millet to two parts liquid such as water or broth. After it boils, reduce the heat to low and cover and simmer for roughly 25 minutes.  The texture cooked this way will be fluffy like rice. If you want a creamier millet, then stir it frequently and add a little more water to it every now and then.

  • If you want a nuttier flavor, then you can roast the grains prior to boiling. Place the grains in a dry skillet over medium heat and stir frequently. When the millet has a golden color then remove from the skillet and add to the water.

Simple Serving Suggestions

  • Use as you would quinoa to make a grain/veggie/protein bowl. Add raw or cooked vegetables (use left- over veggies from last night’s dinner) and add a protein such as tempeh, chicken or fish.  Toss it with a homemade dressing and you have a simple meal to take to work for lunch!

  • Use with your meal instead of potatoes or rice as your starch

  • Use ground millet in bread and muffin recipes

  • Add cooked millet to your soups

  • Combine cooked millet with chopped vegetables, GF bread crumbs, eggs and seasonings. Form into patties and bake at 350 degrees F. until done.

Buying and Storing your Millet

  • When not using your millet, store it in your pantry, in a cool and dark place and it will keep for several months.

  • You can also store it in your refrigerator. (I store mine in a mason jar in the fridge)

  • If your millet has a harsh aftertaste, this means it is rancid and you should discard it.

  • It’s shelf life is not as stable as some other grains so do not purchase this one in bulk.

  • I recommend purchasing your millet from small companies. If you don’t have a local source then opt to purchase millet from the refrigerator section of your natural grocery store.

How Do I use Millet Flour?

  • Millet flour has a distinct sweet flavor. Purchase in small amounts since it can turn bitter rapidly. If you purchase from a small local company, ask how fresh the flour is.   You can also grind your own millet into flour in a high- power blender.  Store the flour in the freezer to maintain freshness.

What Else Should I know about Millet?

  • Millet contains Ignore, which is a substance that can interfere with thyroid hormone manufacture. Thus, if you have a thyroid issue, just don’t eat millet every day. But still feel free to consume it in moderation.

  • Although it is a gluten free grain/seed, those with celiac disease should start off with a small amount to see if they tolerate it. This is because millet does contain prolamines that are similar to the alpha-gliadin of wheat.  That being said, millet is usually well tolerated by those with celiac disease.

  • Millet is a GMO free grain and is not sprayed according to  Jennifer at CJ Milling in CO.  She stated that millet is a very safe grain to grow even conventionally since it is not a GMO nor sprayed crop.  You may see organic millet in your store-this is where you save your money and buy this grain/seed non organic.

3 Benefits of Getting More Sleep

As an adult, you may have put sleep on the backburner as far as priorities go. This isn’t unusual, in part because of the overcrowded schedules that most of us have. It is important to give yourself the occasional reality check that you are human and sleep deprivation will have negative effects on you in the long run. Here are some benefits of getting the sleep you need, so that you might be motivated to hit the sack a little earlier each night (1).

1) Be Heart Healthy- One of the most constant effects of sleep deprivation is heart problems. This is thought to be caused by worsening of cholesterol and blood pressure. This also may explain why heart attack and stroke usually occur in the early morning hours. Getting enough sleep will prevent these negative effects and keep you healthier for longer!

2) De-Stress- You have probably noticed that you are more stressed out when you are tired, but it turns out there is more to it than that. Sleep deprivation actually puts your body in a state of stress. One way this manifests itself is through high blood pressure, which can have other negative implications as well. Also, your body will increase the production of stress hormones. As well as ruining your day, these hormones can keep you awake at night, making the problem even worse. To prevent this vicious cycle, try your best to get eight hours of sleep every night. Your mood will benefit greatly, helping everyone around you as well as yourself.

3) Help Your Brain- Probably the most obvious benefit of getting a good night’s sleep is that you are more alert the next day. This is because sleep is a restorative process for your mind and body. When you wake up feeling refreshed, you are more likely to go out and do something with your day. This will make you tired by the time night rolls around, and you’ll be ready for another night of high quality sleep. Now there’s a cycle you want to get caught up in. Also, sleeping enough will improve your memory. While your body is resting at night, your brain is busy processing your day. It consolidates everything from smells to emotions and primes your mind for whatever information it will need to process the next day. This will allow you to learn and retain information better in your daily life.

Meditation’s Benefits Proven Further By Mindful Mice

Anecdotal evidence has for decades suggested that the regular practise of meditation has a profound physical and psychological benefits, and in recent years human studies have provided solid scientific confirmation to these suppositions. From physical brain changes to lessened anxiety, the human participants in these studies have experienced measurable benefits. For additional proof, researchers have extended their studies to mice.

By using light to trigger brain activity similar to that seen in humans when they are meditating, Michael Posner of the University of Oregon believes he’s created the first ever meditating mice. Having previously discovered that meditation changes the white matter in the brains of human volunteers, Posner hypothesised that theta brainwaves are responsible for the adjustment.

Measured using electrodes attached to the scalp, theta brainwaves increase in meditators, even when they are in a non-meditative state. The changes this appears to induce in white matter relates to communication between the different brain regions and are particularly noticeable in the ACC, or anterior cingulate cortex.

With the ACC area of the brain regulating the amygdala – which is responsible for our response to fear response – Posner has concluded that alterations in the ACC bring about the positive effect meditation has for people suffering from anxiety.

In order to gain further understanding, Posner undertook the task of creating an animal model of meditation which would allow his team to make new observations. In order to mimic the theta brainwave changes discernable in humans, he used a method known as optogenetics.

A technique in which scientists genetically engineer certain brain cells to be stimulated by light, optogenetics allowed the researchers to induce increased theta brainwave-like activity in the mice. Having received half an hour of this mental stimulation for 20 days, the mice’s behaviour was examined to see whether there was any discernable change.

Attempting to ascertain whether the anxiety levels in mice had changed after this meditation-like activity, they were placed in boxes with areas of light and dark. Frightened mice will not leave the dark areas, and in this way the scientists found out that the “meditating” mice were less anxious than their non-meditating counterparts.

The researchers have yet to conclusively investigate the white matter of these mice, but these early indications of behavioural changes bodes well for research into meditation in the future. It also adds credence to the idea that meditation itself – rather than the relaxation it provides or a placebo effect – can be an effective and scientifically valid way to treat mental health issues such as anxiety.

Green Bananas – 14 Incredible Health Benefits

Green bananas, also known as unripe bananas, are bitter in taste (due to high tannin contents), hard to peel, and has starchy flavor, all of which make them unpalatable.

To reduce the bitterness and starchy flavor, you can steam, boil or fry them before consumption.

Green bananas are rich in starch contents, roughly half of which are resistant starches. Resistant starches are insoluble fibers that resist digestion by small intestinal microbiota but get fermented by colonic microbiota.

Besides beneficial resistant starches bananas also offer pectin, which is a soluble fiber that gets fermented by the colonic microbiota.

The fermentation yields short-chain fatty acids that include acetate, propionate, and butyrate. The latter is said to feed the microbiota and used by the colon endothelial cells as a source of energy.

The green peel color reflects its high chlorophyll contents (roughly 70). The peels are also high in carotenoids and tannins.

HEALTH BENEFITS

The followings are the health benefits of green bananas:

Increases Satiety

High-fiber contents in green bananas help increase satiety and make you feel full longer, thus they help you eat fewer foods.

Weight Loss

Adding green bananas to your diet can help you lose weight. Resistant starch contents which increase satiety and make you feel full longer help reduce food intakes, thus they help you reduce caloric consumption.

Better Nutrient Absorption

The vast bulk of mineral absorption occurs in the small intestine. Pectin contents in green bananas slow down the chyme movement in the small intestines, thus it promotes better mineral absorption into the bloodstream.

In addition, short-chain fatty acids produced by the colonic bacteria via fermentation have been found to increase the solubility of minerals, thus it leads to better mineral absorption into the bloodstream.

Promotes Better Bone Structure

Taking lots of processed carbs including high-sugar diet can cause ‘bone scurvy’ (oxidative stress weaken bone matrices made of collagen fibers).

Alternatively, substituting these foods with cooked green bananas is thought to help prevent or slow down the bone scurvy. Green bananas contain many minerals for bone health that includes calcium, magnesium, manganese and phosphorus.

In addition, they offer antioxidant and anti-inflammatory tannins plus carotenoids and chlorophyll which help prevent oxidative stress that can damage bone matrices. I am sure green bananas also contain silica which is also vital for building and maintaining collagen fibers.

Fresh green banana is a good source of vitamin C but most are thought to lose during boiling, steaming or frying.

Short-chain fatty acids produced by colonic microbiota fermentation lead to better mineral solubility (fat-soluble minerals), thus they help promote better magnesium and calcium absorptions.

High Antioxidant

A study has found that unripe banana peels had higher antioxidant potency than ripe and leaky ripe. Therefore, consuming (cooked) green banana with their peels remain intact may provide you superb antioxidant properties conferred by the presence of chlorophyll and tannins.

Arrests Diarrhea

Some foods can cause diarrhea which is believed to disturb good bacteria diversities in the intestines. This, in turn, results in the proliferation of bad bacteria which release toxins that inflame your intestines.

Resistant starches and a soluble fiber pectin in green banana pulps function to feed good bacteria. So, next time you have diarrhea why not try eating some cooked green bananas with the peels remain intact.

Green banana pulps and peels are also high in tannin contents which act as astringent as well as anti-inflammatory.

Raises Insulin Sensitivity and Lowers Blood Glucose

A study has demonstrated that resistant starches can help improve insulin sensitivity and lower blood glucose as well.

Eating cooked green banana pulps may possibly be a better way of avoiding diabetes and treating diabetes.

Gluten Free

If you are tired finding alternatives to your gluten-rich grains, then try start eating cooked green bananas. They are gluten free and good for your sugar levels too.

Note: Some people may experience stomach discomfort after eating cooked green bananas due to their resistant starch contents.

Reduces Stress

Pectin and resistant starch contents in green bananas not only help promote better digestion but also believed to make you fell more relax.

I cannot explain the possible mechanism behind this phenomenon but what I can think of is that the soluble fiber pectin and other starches help slow down chime movement, thus they delay evacuation.

This action alone may cause parasympathetic nervous system override the sympathetic nervous system – you feel relax and sometimes feel sleepy!

Another possible mechanism is by way of elevated nitric oxide (NO) levels attributed to antioxidant phytonutrients namely tannins, carotenoids, chlorophyll.

Bye-bye Gastritis and Duodenal Ulcer

If you are experiencing gastritis or stomach/duodenal ulcer and have tried many modern or herbal medicines but failed, then why not try to consume cooked green bananas.

Besides pectin contents which can coat your stomach lining in preventing the abrasive effect of a high strength hydrochloric acid, cooked green bananas (with the peels remain intact) also supply tannins which have antiviral/antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Imparts Longevity and Beauty

Tannins, water-soluble polyphenols, are found in green banana pulps and peels. These together with carotenoids and chlorophyll act as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer. These properties is synergized by the resistant starch contents that have been found to exert many health benefits that include modulating the immune functions, improving the brain functions, and controlling/improving insulin sensitivity and blood sugar.

Long-term consumptions of cooked green bananas may possibly exert lower oxidative levels which result in better overall organ system functions, a better-looking skin, and longevity.

Decreases Blood Pressure

Many so-called experts and experts alike think that potassium content in green bananas is a substance that helps lower your blood pressure.

Do you want to know what I think? Potassium is reputed for its function in lowering blood pressure. A medium-size banana (118 grams) provides 12% DV of potassium. But there are other compounds/substances that work together with potassium to reduce the blood pressure.

How about magnesium and vitamin B6? Aren’t they also vasodilators (agents that dilate your blood vessels) as well?.

In my opinion, antioxidant phytonutrients in green bananas that include tannins, carotenoids, and chlorophyll also play a vital role in lowering blood pressure.

How do they do it?

To fully answer the question I will need to write several paragraphs. Suffice to say that many high-antioxidant foods increase NO which help dilate your blood vessels, thus they help reduce your blood pressure.

To conclude, if you take cooked green bananas say a bowl or two per day plus of course a healthy lifestyle that includes a good diet may possibly help maintain your normal blood pressure or reducing high blood pressure (if you are experiencing it).

Remember, health benefits/effects of your food intake depends on your overall diet!

Prevents Colon Cancer

Resistant starches in green bananas act as prebiotic, meaning they feed the beneficial colonic microbiota. This in turn wards off bad bacteria which release toxins that cause inflammation. This mechanism alone is believed to reduce the risk of colon cancer.

The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of tannins (in the pulps) are also thought to play vital roles in colon cancer prevention.

Harmonizes Lipid Levels

Hyperlipidemia is characterized by abnormal lipid levels which, over time, if not treated well can cause cardiovascular problems.

A study conducted involving rats with abnormal lipid levels to find the effect of (yellow) banana peel polyphenols demonstrated that the banana peel polyphenols could effectively reduce the levels of blood lipid in hyperlipidemic rats.

Unripe banana peels had higher antioxidant potency than ripe and leaky ripe. Consuming (cooked) green bananas with their peels remain intact may possibly provide you superb antioxidant properties conferred by the presence of chlorophyll and tannins, thus it may help harmonize the lipid levels.

If the deduction is true, then consuming cooked green bananas regularly can help promote better heart health and prevent heart disease.

Resistant Starches – What They Are and Their Health Benefits

When you ask people whether or not they know soluble fiber and insoluble fiber, many may give this answers, ‘The former dissolves in water while the latter doesn’t.’ But when you ask them whether they have ever heard about resistant starch, some would stare blankly at you and others may simply tell you that they have never come across such compound.

Before discussing resistant starch any further, I would better explain that starches are classified as fibers. In the rest of the article, I would use the word starch the most as it is found appropriate based on context relevancies.

Although fibers are commonly classified as soluble or insoluble, a recent school of thought believes that fiber’s solubility doesn’t determine its physiological function. Instead, other properties such as viscosity and fermentability which prevail as more significant characteristics should be used to determine specific physiological functions.

Naturally occurring resistant starches are a group of fibers which can be soluble or insoluble fibers that resist digestion in the small intestine and are slowly fermented in the colon.

Although grouped into insoluble starches, both soluble fiber and insoluble fiber still perform their designated jobs: soluble fiber tends to slow digestion while insoluble fiber speeds it up.

Many studies involving humans show that resistant starch may have several effective health benefits that include improved insulin sensitivity, reduced abdominal fat,  improved gut health benefits, lower blood sugar levels, and reduced appetite.

4 Types of Resistant Starch

Resistant starches are classified according to structure or source, as follows:

  • RS1 resists digestion because it is bound within the fibrous cell walls. Sources: whole or partially milled grains, legumes, and seeds.

  • RS2 resists digestion because of the granule’s nature. Sources: raw potatoes, some legumes, unripe bananas, and high-amylose starches, such as high-amylose corn.

  • RS3 is formed in the cooking-cooling process. Sources: bread, tortillas, cooked and cooled rice, potatoes, and pasta.

  • RS4 is a man-made and chemically modified starch found in a wide range of products.

Superfood For Gut Health

How does resistant starch improve your gut health? When you eat resistant starch, it ends up in the colon, where microbiota ferments it and turns it into short-chain fatty acids.

When the bacteria ferment resistant starches, several compounds are produced, including gasses, and short-chain fatty acids such acetate, butyrate (most notable), and propionate.

Butyrate not only being the most important short-chain fatty acid but is actually the preferred fuel of the colon epithelia.

Short chain fatty acids are used as fuel by both microbiota and colon epithelial cells. Certain bacterial species in the colon survive by cross-feeding, using either the breakdown products of complex carbohydrate degradation or fermentation products such as lactic acid for growth.

Increases Good Bacteria Population

There are actually hundreds of different species of bacteria colonizing the intestine. In recent decades, scientists have suggested that the number and type of bacteria may possibly have a great impact on health.

Resistant starch feeds the friendly bacteria in the colon which provide a positive effect on the type of bacteria as well as their numbers.

An animal study has demonstrated that resistant starch consumption may possibly have modulatory effects on certain microbiota population by increasing the number of several types of beneficial bacteria.

Enhances Insulin Sensitivity, Lowers Blood Sugar Levels, and Improves Metabolic Health

Having insulin resistance (low insulin sensitivity) is believed to be a major causal factor in several degenerative diseases, including metabolic syndrome, obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and Alzheimer’s Disease.

Resistant starch may help you avoid or reduce the risk those chronic diseases by way of improving insulin sensitivity and lowering blood sugar.

Studies have shown that resistant starch may possibly help improve insulin sensitivity that is the insulin receptors located in your cell membranes cells become more responsive to insulin.

It may also very effective at improving satiety and lowering blood sugar levels after meals.

“Second-meal effect” you may gain by taking resistant starch with breakfast is that it not only lower the blood sugar spike in the morning but extend it at lunch.

Helps Lose Weight by Improving Satiety

The more resistant starches you add to your diet, the fewer calories it will contain. Is that so? Yes. It happens that way because resistant starch has only 2 calories per gram compared to regular starch that delivers 4 calories per gram!

Studies have shown that soluble fiber supplements can contribute to weight loss, primarily by increasing satiety (feelings of fullness) and reducing appetite.

Resistant starch has a similar effect. Adding resistant starch to your meals may help increase satiety and make you eat fewer calories.

Note: Adding resistant starch to your diet would not necessarily lead to any major effect on your weight as other methods, for instance, low-carb diet may help you lose weight effectively.
