What Happens to Your Body When You Eat 3-4 Dates Daily?

Dates is an extremely healthy sweet dark brown fruits originating from palm trees. They are full of dietary fiber, proteins, carbohydrates and plethora of vitamins and minerals, like vitamin B1, B2, B3, B5, A1 and C. Also they are a rich source of calcium, potassium, magnesium, manganese, copper and iron.

They provide a proper amount of nutrition, so you include in your diet. 3-4 Dates with milk early in the morning are a good start.

Health Benefits of Eating Dates Regularly

Lowers cholesterol

Date are free from cholesterol, and contain very little fat? Including them in smaller quantities in your daily diet can help you keep a check on cholesterol level, and even assist in weight loss.

Night Blindness

Consuming date daily helps in keeping the eyes healthy and also prevents diseases like night blindness. A paste of date leaves can be rubbed on and around the eyes or dates can be ingested orally to reduce night blindness.

Boosts Energy

They are rich in natural sugars like fructose, sucrose and glucose. They are perfect snack for individuals who need quick energy bursts. Many people including athletes eat dates before training or engaging themselves in activities that require high energy levels.

Promotes Digestion

If you soak a few dates in water and chew on them daily, your digestive system will behave itself very well. Plus it’s recommended for those who have trouble with constipation.

Healthy Heart

They are a rich source of dietary fiber which is essential for reducing bad cholesterol and total cholesterol levels. Dates are also a rich source of potassium which is linked to a reduction in heart disease and stroke.

Anemia

They have a high mineral content, which is beneficial for many different health conditions, but their impressive levels of iron make them a perfect dietary supplement for people suffering from anemia. The high level of iron balances out the inherent lack of iron in anemic patients, increasing energy and strength, while decreasing feelings of fatigue and sluggishness.

Dental Health

Dates contain fluorine, an important chemical element that inhibits tooth decay by removing plaque as well as strengthening the tooth enamel. Tooth enamel is made up of hydroxypatites which becomes resistant against tooth decay when it comes in contact with fluorine.

Intoxication

They are commonly used as a remedy for alcoholic intoxication. Dates provide quick relief and have a sobering effect in case you feel as though have consumed an uncomfortable amount of alcohol. They can also be used the following morning to prevent severe hangovers.

Strengthen Bones

Dates contain a high amount of calcium which strengthens and promotes healthy bone. Due to its rich calcium, it proves the best food to prevent osteoporosis. High potassium decreases the loss of calcium through the kidney.

Sexual Stamina

Date is known to increase sexual stamina. It must be soaked overnight in goat’s milk and grinded in the same milk day after. Cardamom and honey must be added to this mixture to prepare a tonic. This is very useful in increasing sexual endurance and sterility.

What happens to your body when you use medical marijuana

Smoking marijuana, i.e. even the first puff, has an almost immediate effect on your brain, heart rate and sense of perception. Marijuana may have long-term effects on health as well, even though claimed otherwise by habitual users.

Marijuana, or cannabis, has an extensive history of traditional uses as a botanical medicine and an industrial material all throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, and America, and it has been used for at least 5,000 years.

What Is Medical Marijuana

Unlike “pot” (the recreationally used illegal drug), the term medical marijuana refers to the use of the whole, unprocessed marijuana plant along with its pure extracts, for the purpose of improving a symptom or treating a disease. For it to be effective, “it must be sourced from a medicinal-grade cannabis plant that has been meticulously grown without the use of toxic pesticides and fertilizers”.

Marijuana’s incredible healing properties can be attributed to its critical levels of medical terpenes and flavonoids as well as a very high cannabidiol (CBD) content. Even though marijuana has not yet been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) except in Colorado and Washington State, more and more physicians are prescribing it, swearing by its effectiveness and health benefits.

What are the Effects of Marijuana on the Body?

When marijuana smoke is inhaled into the lungs, the effect is immediate; marijuana is quickly released into the bloodstream, slowly reaching your brain and other organs. Smoking it is the most effective way for it to have a quick result; when drank or absorbed through food, it takes a little longer to take effect.

Here’s what happens to the body when marijuana is ingested:

Respiratory System

Marijuana smoke is made up of an assortment of toxic chemicals (including ammonia and hydrogen cyanide) which, much like tobacco smoke, may severely irritate your bronchial passages and lungs. Apart from wheezing, coughing and producing phlegm on a regular basis, you are looking at increased risk of bronchitis and lung infections. On top of that, marijuana has the potential to elevate your risk of developing lung cancer, as its smoke contains carcinogens. According to some studies, “marijuana may aggravate existing respiratory illnesses like asthma and cystic fibrosis”.

Circulatory System

Marijuana has a very serious effect on the circulatory system, as THC is carried throughout your body and it moves from your lungs straight into your bloodstream. Your heart rate may increase by 20 to 50 beats per minute within minutes, and this may continue for up to three hours. Still, marijuana can potentially stop the growth of blood vessels that feed cancerous tumors.

Bloodshot eyes are one of the telltale signs of recent marijuana use.

Central Nervous System

Once THC enters your circulatory system, it quickly enters your bloodstream and gets transported to your brain and the rest of your organs. The brain (under THC) releases large amounts of dopamine, which may not only make you feel good, but heighten your sensory perception, as well as your perception of time. THC changes the way information is processed in the hippocampus, leading to your judgment being impaired. New memories are rarely created when you’re high.

Your balance may also be upset due to the changes that take place in the cerebellum and basal ganglia, as can your coordination and reflex response. It is not uncommon for large doses of marijuana to cause hallucinations or delusions. In some people, marijuana can cause anxiety, while the symptoms of withdrawal are known to include insomnia, irritability and loss of appetite.

It is estimated that about nine percent of marijuana users develop an addiction, with young people whose brains are not fully developed facing a lasting impact on their thinking and memory skills.

Pregnant marijuana users will face additional issues, i.e. marijuana intake affects the brain development of your unborn baby. The child may be more prone to trouble with concentration, memory and problem-solving skills.

The pharmacologic effects of marijuana are thought to ease pain and inflammation. It may also be of use in controlling seizures and spasms.

Digestive System

Smoking marijuana often causes a burning in your mouth and throat. Taking THC orally is processed in your liver.

Using medical marijuana is recommended for people living with cancer or AIDS as it can help increase appetite. Also, marijuana can ease nausea and vomiting.

Immune System

Some research indicates that THC might damage the immune system, making you vulnerable to infections and illness. However, further research is needed.

What Diseases Can it Help Treat?

There’s still an ongoing research and debate on the effectiveness of medical marijuana. Those who swear by its effect claim that medical marijuana has an important role in many body processes, including immune functions, metabolic regulation, pain, cravings, anxiety and bone growth.

Common ailments being treated with medical marijuana include:

Degenerative neurological disorders such as dystonia

Mood disorders

Parkinson’s disease

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Multiple sclerosis

Seizures

Sunburn (with cannabis oil)

Potential side effects of medical cannabis are also numerous, and should be taken very seriously.

To everyone who is looking to use medical marijuana for curing an illness, it is advised they first consult with their appointed MD; while marijuana may potentially help ease or cure symptoms of one illness, it may potentially be the cause of another. If you are ill, don’t take it without having someone around, in case of a side-effect occurring.

What Happens to Our Lungs, Brain & Mood When We Use a Himalayan SALT LAMPS

The Himalayan Salt Lamps  are made from Natural Himalayan Crystal Salt Rock formed millions of years ago in the foothills of Himalaya. Salt lamps are blocks of pure Himalayan salt, so they come from the same region of the world. Also known as the ‘Vitamins of the Air’, they are made from the salt that came from ancient oceans, and serve as a perfect air ionizer.

How Himalayan Salt Lamps Work?

Himalayan salt lamps emit negative ions in the air which are healthy for the human body. The ionization is supported by the bulb inside of the salt block since the bulb heats the salt block around it. Himalayan salt attracts the water around it and this process called as hygroscopic. Therefore, the Himalayan salt lamps may become dump or wet, especially in an environment with high humidity. As the bulb heats the salt lamp, the water evaporates and the negative ions are released in the air. The negative ions bind with the positive harmful ions such as allergens, molds and bacteria, and neutralize the environment in the house.

Improve Blood Flow

Particular studies have suggested that negative ions, such as those emitted by Himalayan salt lamps, can accelerate blood flow. This boost helps to improve several disorders of the vascular system and can prevent certain damage to the lungs.

Purify Air

Dust, pollen, cigarette smoke and other pollutants ruin the purity of the air we breathe, and the perfect way to neutralize it is to use Himalayan salt lamp on your room. It acts as air purifier through its ability to absorb water and evaporating them after. They attract water molecules in the air, which traps impurities in the air and leaves you with fresh, clean air: this is known as hygroscopy.

Good Vibrations

Salt has been used through out the ages to clean energies from homes and people. You can use Salt to clear crystals, clear your body and clear your home. Because Salt Crystals vibrate at a frequency closer to the earths magnetic frequency known as the shuman resonance frequency they can also help bring us back in balance.

Boost Energy Levels

Positive ions deplete the body of energy, and it is believed that Himalayan salt lamps can actually do the opposite. The negative ions increase energy levels, which yields a refreshing effect similar to the feeling of rejuvenation achieved from spending time in nature.

Improve Your Breathing

Asthma and other breathing complications can be triggered by polluted, corrupted air. Salt lamps ensure that you breathe cleaner air whenever you are around them, helping to improve breathing and prevent contaminants from entering your lungs.

Other Benefits of Using Himalayan salt lamp

Balancing pH to strengthening bones and lowering blood pressure
Reduce morning sickness, some type of depression
Reduce asthma attack and allergy symptoms
Reduce allergic reaction
Reduce “electro-smog” or EMF
Better quality of sleep
Prevent skin cancer
Help kids with autism
Reduce snoring
Reduce stress
Increase awareness

What happens to your body during a workout

Now that you’ve kicked off your fitness journey and are in the swing of things, you may be experiencing a lot of changes with both your physical and mental state. A lot of things happen in your body when you work out that you may not even be aware of, but rest assured that they’re all very good things. From increased energy and awareness, to even a boost in your libido, physical fitness benefits more than just your physical appearance. Below, a breakdown of what happens to your body during a workout:

Heart and Lungs

First things first, you’ll notice a change in your breathing. If you’re going for a run for the first time in months, you’ll experience a higher heart rate and heavy breathing on your end which is completely normal and part of the process. Your body needs a lot more oxygen (from 12 liters of air a minute up to 100 litres of air a minute!) when you exercise and an increased breathing rate is simply your body taking in more oxygen to be delivered to your muscles. Over time, your body will get used to the change and working out will become easier. In fact, with regular exercise, your heart actually gets bigger, causing your blood vessels to become more elastic and your blood pressure and heart rate to lower. Change may be difficult at first, but it’s most definitely a good thing!

Muscles

The first thing you’ll experience when you start a regular workout routine is muscle soreness. While it sucks, it’s perfectly natural to feel tenderness at the beginning and it’s actually a good thing. It shows that you’re making progress and the pain you’re experiencing are your muscles tearing and repairing themselves as changes occur. Fitness apps can be helpful in keeping with your fitness momentum if you’re second-guessing your workout plan but rest assured: Over time, your muscles will get stronger and more defined naturally as your fitness journey progresses.

Brain

The brain gets an incredible boost from regular exercise. Exercise improves oxygen flow to the brain, and will cause your brain to start functioning at a higher level. This increased cell function aids in protecting you from various diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and even strokes.

Your mood levels will be elevated both immediately following a workout and long term thanks to exercise boosting the growth of neurotransmitters. Your brain will release endorphins and experience a surge in serotonin levels (a neurotransmitter that controls mood). Your brain will also experience a boost in dopamine, glutamate and GABA levels, all neurotransmitters that help in healthy cell growth and function.

Your memory and learning capabilities will also experience a pleasant boost, thanks to exercise making the hippocampus more active, the area of the brain that aids in new brain cell growth. And don’t forget the pituitary gland! This pea sized gland attached to the base of the brain experiences a great boost during exercise, helping in healthy muscle growth and repair.

Sex Drive

You may not think it but exercise can actually have a major positive effect on your sex drive! Exercise leads to increased blood flow and circulation which plays a big role in increasing sexual arousal in the pelvic regions in both men and women.

Appetite

Brace yourself; exercising burns calories and uses energy, making it perfectly normal to be hungry right after a workout. While there’s nothing wrong with fueling up post-workout, it’s important to the eat the right kinds of food in order to properly recharge your body.

Bowels

The one sure thing you will notice when you start to exercise regularly is the change in your bowel movements. As it turns out, the more you exercise the more you’ll need to hit up the bathroom. Awkward, but true. And there are two specific reasons for it. First, exercise helps boost natural contractions in your intestinal muscles, hereby removing stools more quickly. Exercise also cuts down on the amount of water taken from your stool into your body, allowing food to pass through the large intestine at a much quicker rate.

What happens to your brain when you faint? | Daniel Glaser

Hillary Clinton’s stumble at a 9/11 anniversary ceremony last Sunday may have been pounced on by her critics, but many also pointed out that she still managed to fulfil her obligations despite suffering from pneumonia.

The knees buckling, as Clinton’s did, is a classic symptom of fainting. Weak and wobbly legs might seem to be caused by the reduction in blood pressure that often results in fainting. But, in fact, this lack of oxygen being pumped around the body does not affect the limbs directly. Instead, it’s a reaction sparked by the brain to ensure its own survival, as limited oxygen supply is so dangerous. If the brain is starved of oxygen for more than a minute or two it is irreversibly damaged.

While fainting carries the risk of hitting your head, evolution has judged a potential knock to be less dangerous than the threat of oxygen starvation. So, the brain sends a signal to the leg muscles to stop working. This gets the head closer to the level of the heart quickly, where less pumping effort is needed to receive a life-saving supply of blood. Ironically this is exactly the kind of tough call a future commander in chief might be called upon to make.

Dr Daniel Glaser is director of Science Gallery at King’s College London

What Happens To Your Body When You Consume Watermelon Regularly

Around 92% of watermelon is composed of water, but aside from its refreshing and hydrating effects, it is also rich in essential nutrients that are good for the body.

Each refreshing bite can provide your body with sufficient amounts of antioxidants, lycopene, amino acids, potassium and Vitamins A, B6 and C. It is also fat-free and has low calorie and sodium content. Learn more about the positive effects of watermelon to the body with the help of this article.

Helps you stay hydrated

Due to the high water content of watermelon, eating it is the best way to stay hydrated. Its juice also has a high electrolyte content. This makes it effective not only in achieving proper body hydration but also in preventing heat stroke.

Good for the skin and hair

One cup of watermelon can supply your body with almost a quarter of your daily recommended Vitamin A intake, which is good for the skin and hair. This essential vitamin can moisturize both your skin and hair while also stimulating healthy growth of new elastin and collagen cells.

Reduces blood pressure

If you have pre-hypertension, then you should consider taking watermelon regularly as it aids in lowering blood pressure. Aside from reduced blood pressure, expect it to work in boosting your arterial health, as well as its function.

Lowers blood sugar level

High blood sugar level is dangerous to your kidneys. It also has drastic effects on your triglyceride level. With the help of watermelon, you can prevent such harm to your health. Consuming watermelon promotes citrulline conversion, which can result in the production of arginine. This is useful in lowering your blood sugar and high cholesterol level, as well as getting rid of excess fats from your body.

Improves eye health

Another of the many positive effects of watermelon to the body is its ability to improve your eye health. It is rich in beta-carotene, which the body can convert into Vitamin A. This stimulates the production of pigments in the retina while also protecting you against macular degeneration related to age and night blindness. The high Vitamin A content of watermelon also promotes healthy teeth, skin, soft and skeletal tissues, as well as mucous membranes.

Supports your muscles and nerves

Watermelon also contains potassium, which makes it an excellent natural electrolyte. This makes it work efficiently in regulating muscle and nerve functions within the body. Potassium has a say on the frequency and degree of muscle contractions. It also controls nerve functions and ensures that they move based only on what is necessary.

Improves cardiovascular health

Watermelon is an excellent source of lycopene, which can protect your cells against damage. It can lower your risk of developing heart disease. The high arginine and citrulline content of watermelon are also good for the heart.

It aids in improving the flow of blood while also reducing excess fat accumulation. This further reduces your risk of suffering from hypertension. It can even reduce the blood pressure of overweight and obese adults.

Aside from the benefits mentioned above, the high nutrition content of watermelon  may also aid in preventing cancer, improving your mood, strengthening your bones, soothing sore muscles, and stimulating a healthy digestive tract. Now that you are aware of its many benefits, it’s time to store some fresh watermelon in your kitchen. Eat a serving daily and you will notice its positive effects to the body in no time.

What Happens To Your Body If You Lose Sleep

Most people do not take sleep seriously, and so they will only have enough of it when they have time to spare. However, this is a huge mistake because if you do not sleep enough, your body will suffer the consequences. Contrary to what most might think, the lack of sleep does not just make you foggy and grumpy, because it can have severe effects on your health. The following are some of the things that can happen to your body if you lose sleep. And so the next time you plan on skipping sleep to go out or to work you should have these consequences mind.

1. You Tend To Forget Things

The brain also needs some rest to ensure that it function correctly. Although the brain does not shut down even when you sleep, the reduction in activity gives it a much-needed break. If you do not sleep enough, you will not only be forgetful, but some research also suggests that it has an impact on your memory and ability to learn new things. It is important to get enough sleep so that your brain can consolidate everything that you learn.

2. Risk Of Getting Diabetes, Cancer And Heart Disease Increases

People that do not get enough sleep have an increased chance of getting stage two diabetes. Different research findings show that individuals who sleep for less than five hours every day increase their probability of getting diabetes because the lack of sleep interferes with how the body processes glucose. Short sleep cycles also increase the rates of breast and prostate cancer, but research on this is not yet conclusive. About heart disease, the sleep deprivation increases blood pressure, and this may put extra pressure on your heart leading to different conditions.

3. You Will Have Low Libido

Men that lose sleep for an extended period will have a significant reduction in their testosterone level. Sleeping for less than five hours at night also leads to a decrease in the sex hormone level by up to 15 percent, and this means that lack of sleep can cause low libido directly. The men that do not get enough sleep also witness a decline in mood and vigor and so their desire to have sex also slumps. Lack of sex drive also occurs with ladies that lose sleep, but it is not as severe as what happens to men.

4. Skin Will Look Terrible

Dermatologists will always advise you to get enough rest if you want to have a nice soft skin and this shows that sleep has a direct impact on your skin. People that do not get enough sleep will tend to have pigmentation, wrinkles, and their skin also appears loose. Their skin might not look nice, but the poor sleepers also have more issue with their appearance than those that get enough sleep.

5. Lack Of Alertness

One of the reasons why sleep experts recommend daytime naps is because they improve alertness. And so it is evident that lack of enough sleep will affect your alertness significantly. If you are sleep deprived, you will not perform well at work because of the lack of alertness and impaired judgment. The drowsiness that comes from sleep deprivation also causes many accidents that lead to thousands of fatalities and injuries because if you do not sleep well, you will not be able to concentrate on the road when driving.

6. You Gain Some Extra Pounds

According to the findings of a 2004 study, people who sleep for six hours or less are thirty percent more likely to become obese than those that sleep for more than seven hours each night. Lack of enough sleep increases hunger and appetite which are the two main things that make people gain too much weight. Sleep deprivation will not only give you hunger, but it also gives you cravings for foods that are high in fats and carbohydrates which are very fattening.

No matter how busy you might be there is always time available for sleep and if you do not utilize it well, then you should be ready for the consequences. The six above are just a few of the things that can happen if you lose sleep, and there are many others including premature aging and death. There are medications that you can take to help you sleep but do not let it reach to that point. Instead, you should start by coming up with a sleep cycle and following it. Also, make use of daytime naps to avoid the adverse consequences of sleep deprivation.

Fructose. What happens when you remove it from your diet?

Is Sugar Really that Bad?

Fructose: What happens when you remove it from your diet?

By now most of you know to avoid and minimize your sugar intake. But do you really know why it is so important and what type of sugar should you be removing from your diet?

Fructose: Reasons why you should Avoid Processed Sugar

  • There is a link between a processed food diet and disease-most processed foods are high in refined carbs, void of nutrients, and these carbs convert rapidly into sugar in your blood stream

  • Sugar is the underlying factor in diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and obesity, not saturated fats like you led to believe

  • Healthy weight-some people think that because they are not overweight it is okay to eat as much sugar as they want.  Even if you don’t gain weight, sugar will raise triglyceride levels, total cholesterol, and increase blood pressure

  • Fructose-this is the worst kind of sugar because it has to be metabolized in your liver instead of in your intestines like glucose.

o   Your liver turns fructose into liver fat which causes metabolic problems.

o   Excess fructose shuts down the part of your brain that tells you when you are full; thus making overeating likely. Your Liver can only handle small quantities of fructose at any given time so excess fructose is stored as body fat instead of being burned as energy.

o   When you consume fructose in liquid form such as a soda, the effects not only speed up but are also magnified.

o   Fructose is not the preferred energy source for muscles or the brain

  • It is more fat producing than glucose: basically fructose will pack on the pounds!

  • Elevated insulin levels (caused by consuming too much processed sugar) give cancer tumors a boost by directing cancer cells to consume glucose.

  • Some cancers actually contain insulin receptors, harnessing glucose to grow and spread.  For these cancers, eating sugar is like putting fuel on the fire.

  • If you have cancer it is wise to remove all excess sugar from your diet: do your homework on this subject as hospitals will still give cancer patients foods loaded with sugar.  Yes, Ensure ( a common product given to cancer patients)  is filled with “crap” ingredients including sugar.  Read labels!

  • Sugar is related to dementia and Alzheimer’s disease

o   There is still some debate however among neurologists and other medical professionals but research shows that sugar and other high refined carb type foods in excess age the brain and can increase the risk of dementia.

o   When you consume sugar in excess, it forms toxic compounds called advanced glycations end products (AGES)   Yes, sugar ages you!

o   Too much of the fast releasing glucose (which happens when you eat the refined carbs and sugary processed foods) overloads the brain cells which are less capable of handling this overload than the muscle cells.  (A high sugar, processed food diet can cause or contribute to depression)

o   So the more sugar and refined carbs you eat, the higher your insulin levels will be and then more peaks in your blood sugar levels.

o   These swings from high to low in your blood sugar will leave you tired, unable to concentrate and eventually over time it can lead to fading memory.

  • Over time your body will become less responsive to its own insulin and will develop insulin resistant which is the precursor to diabetes

  • And many are calling Alzheimer’s “type 3” diabetes.

Natural Alternatives

  • If trying to eliminate sugar from your diet rather try to reduce your processed sugar intake. If you eliminate sugar completely from your diet you will also be eliminating very healthy choices such as some vegetables and fruits.  These are the foods that you do want in your diet!  You do need some sugar in your diet to fuel your muscles and keep your brain active.  So choose whole foods for your sugar source!  Beets, carrots, sweet potatoes, berries, apples and bananas are a few examples.

  • Fruit is still the better option than processed food because it contains fiber and other vital nutrients needed for our health. Because of the fiber and additional nutrients, it does not cause the immediate spike in blood sugar that say a donut would that is void of additional nutrients.  However it is easy to go overboard on the fruit-2 servings per day only unless you are a very active person!

  • Stevia Leaf to use as a sweetener. Not Truvia or PureVia which are processed products and not stevia in its pure form.

  • Small amounts of raw honey and pure grade B Maple syrup.  Again, small amounts.  But these do contain some nutrients.  Use these in meals and snacks that are not cooked or cooked below 115 degrees as the heat will destroy the beneficial nutrients in these products.

Doctors make easy money from medical marijuana. What happens when it"s legal?

Frank Lucido, a California physician, received a phone call in 2012 from a doctor in Colorado.

Like Lucido – one of California’s best-known cannabis-friendly physicians – the Colorado doctor had been writing recommendations for medical marijuana, the paperwork required for patients to access cannabis at medical marijuana retail outlets in his state.

Unlike Lucido, the Colorado doctor was worried about the future of his practice.

There was a legalization measure on the ballot for recreational marijuana in Colorado that fall. If it passed, he was looking for somewhere to move, where he could continue writing recommendations in the semi-legal gray area of medical cannabis.

“What’s the climate in California?” he asked.

Colorado voters did approve Amendment 64, one of the first two state legalization measures to pass. Lucido isn’t sure if the doctor did end up moving west. But if he did, he may need to move again.

This November, California – along with three other states – will vote on whether to approve recreational use of the drug. The state’s measure – Proposition 64, the Adult Use of Marijuana Act – would allow adults aged 21 and older to possess up to an ounce of cannabis and buy the drug in stores – no doctor’s note required.

If approved, Prop 64 could spell the end of a cottage industry that has attracted entrepreneurs and brought mockery on the notion of medical cannabis.

Cannabis recommendations are often issued by places such as San Francisco Green Evaluations, a “clinic” in an upstairs office at Amoeba Music, a record store in the city’s tourist-friendly Haight-Ashbury district. There, Samuel Dismond III, a former primary care physician with nearly 30 years of experience, writes recommendations for as little as $ 45 – and “super fast”, as multiple Yelp reviewers put it.

Dismond says he started writing cannabis recommendations after two serious car accidents left him disabled. Unable to continue with primary care, he started writing recommendations one day a week.

“I was holding my nose when I tried it,” he said. “But then I saw an opportunity.”

“It’s been gangbusters-good.”

There’s also the likes of Roger J Foster, dubbed Dr Skype, who gave “exams” to patients in his Sacramento, California, office from his Las Vegas home via Skype. For these doctors, medical marijuana has meant easy money: $ 50 or $ 100 cash for a few minutes’ work, with the requirement that the recommendation be renewed annually.

“Most of the physicians – not all of them – but most of the physicians doing this had some kind of problem with their medical license,” Dismond said. “They had restrictions; they couldn’t do any other kind of medicine. They were doing rubber-stamp recommendations because they didn’t give a fuck. That’s how the bad reputation of cannabis physicians came about.”

Conservatives and law enforcement officials have criticized medical marijuana as a sham, with “script mills” akin to the “pill mills” churning out questionable prescriptions for opiates.

This has meant professional ridicule and ostracism for doctors like Lucido, who have sometimes been lumped in with the Dr Skypes and Venice Beach clinics where street hawkers try to wheedle tourists into seedy offices. Prosecutors in Santa Clara County, south of San Francisco, allege that at least one chain of clinics, 420 MD, is tied to organized crime.

The seasoned political operatives secured by Spotify billionaire Sean Parker, Prop 64’s main bankroller, took this into account in their campaign. The measure promises to reform medical marijuana and “reduce the number of unscrupulous medical MJ clinics”, said campaign spokesman Jason Kinney.

If the measure passes, medical cannabis would still exist in California, but patients would need a new recommendation from an “attending physician” and would be required to obtain a state-issued medical marijuana patient ID card.

The card will exempt them from state sales tax on cannabis, though a 15% excise tax would still apply, plus any local taxes cities and counties might apply.

The tax difference – plus the allowance for 18-to-20-year-olds to continue to access medical cannabis (children whose doctors recommend cannabis are allowed in dispensaries if accompanied by an adult) – give doctors such as Lucido reassurance that there will still be a demand for medical marijuana post-legalization.

They are also banking on legalization drawing more people, like those with chronic pain, to try non-psychoactive cannabis strains and products. Only about 5% of Californians say they use medical marijuana, according to a 2012 survey.

When Dr Jeffrey Hergenrather, of Sebastopol, California, started writing recommendations 16 years ago, only 10% of his patients had never tried cannabis. Now, he says, about half his patients seeking a 90-minute, $ 300 exam are new to the drug, including “kids with autism, kids with seizure disorder”.

For startups like HelloMD – which offer recommendations via mobile apps, marketed especially to tech-savvy, well-off consumers who use Uber and Airbnb – legalization could mean a segue to telehealth – patients videoconferencing with doctors over a secure channel.

“There’s a misconception that this market is really just a recreational market,” said Mark Hadfield, the founder of HelloMD. “We think that there’s a much bigger market for health and wellness consumers.”

Under Prop 64, Lucido expects “25% to 50%” of his practice to go away.

“But we’ll still see patients who need guidance,” he said.

As for the Dr Skypes, the doctors in record stores, and his Colorado colleague? Lucido defends them – to a degree.

“They gave us a bad name and delayed legalization by a few years,” he said. “But say what you want about the script mills – they never harmed anybody.” At the same time, “90% of the doctors doing that will have to go out and find a job.”
