How we can start a social care revolution in seven easy steps | Katie Johnson

The government’s commitment to provide an additional £2bn for social care in the spring budget was presented as a solution to help ease pressure on the NHS and councils over the next three years. While the measure has addressed the immediate funding crisis, there is concern that this is no more than a short-term fix. The announcement risks masking the true scale of the challenges ahead and the radical surgery required to reform social care.

In all likelihood, the extra money will be used by local authority and NHS commissioners to block purchase places in residential care homes. This is not the answer.

Spending money in this way will do little to tackle the fundamental problem: we are admitting too many older people to hospital, keeping them there for too long and failing to give them the care they need in their own homes.

While cheaper than a hospital bed, a place in a residential care home is still more expensive and, crucially, less effective than care and support in the community.

There needs to be a transformation in the way that social care is commissioned and provided, to improve the quality of care, but also to make services financially sustainable, without the need to raid other budgets for extra funding.

A strategy for reform would have seven key elements:

1. Champion independent living

We need to engineer a dramatic shift away from residential care towards the kind of support elderly people actually want and need. That means better support for people to live independently in their own homes, with a skilled, professional workforce to provide the advice and assistance they need. We need to invest in a model of care that involves greater collaboration between the person being supported and those providing support.

2. Support families and carers

There needs to be stronger provision of advice and assistance for families and other carers, and more effective liaison with voluntary and community organisations that are skilled in providing support to older people. This means creating partnerships that can empower volunteers and deliver more professionalised community care.

3. Shift the funding focus to community-based care

Local authorities need to switch their focus away from expensive residential provision to support family, carer and community-based services. This funding shift is necessary if we are to create a fundamentally new system that offers holistic care in the home and keeps older people, wherever possible, out of hospital and residential care.

4. Incentivise local authorities

Local authorities should be incentivised to purchase individually tailored packages of care. Why are we so afraid of asking people, and their relatives and carers, what they really want and need? Many councils want to do this, but their options are limited by what the market can provide or by a lack of imagination. They should be rewarded when they invest in transforming the way providers think about services.

5. Prevention rather than cure

Transforming the social care system, rather than simply shoring it up, would address the problem of delayed discharges from hospital, but also reduce the flow of older people into hospital in the first place. It would prioritise prevention, rather than waiting for problems to arise and then attempting an inadequate cure. The best local authorities are already using their resources creatively, such as looking at predictive analytics to anticipate demand.

6. A better alternative to ‘integration’

There is plenty of talk about the need for an integrated health and social care system, or even a “National Care Service”. There is a much simpler solution. NHS providers and local government need to co-operate better to find the right kind of care for elderly people.

Liaison between hospitals and local authorities will never be truly effective if it is just one more item on the to-do list of hard-pressed nurses and social care workers. It requires dedicated resources – well qualified people whose full-time job it is to ensure that the hand-offs between hospital and community care are speedy, efficient and driven by the individual needs of the patient. Creating these vital liaison roles should be only the first step in a programme to transform the skills and role of the social care workforce.

7. Pool resources

Just as the NHS and local authorities should look to share resources, there is a key role to be played by combined authorities and other city and county partnerships. They should be encouraged to pool their money to fund the transformation of social care.

The budget has already seen one U-turn. It is not too late to redirect the £2bn and make a real difference to health and social care in the UK.

How Do We Stop The Poisoning Of Humanity? – Natural Easy Solutions To Combat Poisoned Food, Air, Water & Minds

I’m not kidding; this is an all-out assault on humanity.

It’s enough that you start protecting you and your families. Never mind who’s trying to kill you, just get out of their way as much as possible. There WILL be a time and a place for dealing with that, but for now, let’s just survive this full frontal assault, shall we?

Today is my birthday, and when I walked out into the sunshine this morning, I was greeted by a sky thick with chemicals. No longer are chemtrails a conspiracy theory. Like a lot of other things, it’s slipped into the arena of conspiracy fact, with the evidence being everywhere. Happy birthday to me.

Are They Too Stupid To Know They Are Also Killing Themselves?

Some people ask the question, “Well if they are trying to kill us, are they too stupid to know that they also will be killed via toxic poisoning?” The purpose of this article is not only to wake you the heck up but also, to put into your hands the very same survival techniques that those in the know use.

Some of the remedies include; water and air purifiers, organic red wine, oregano oil, diatomic earth, heavy metal detox methods and other toxic mitigation methods. For, we cannot completely eradicate the toxins of our planet, so all we’ve got is mitigation. It just might be enough!

Poisoned Food

Our grandparent’s bodies didn’t have to survive the chemical soup that is our modern world, but we do. I think it best to first understand exactly what G.M.O. means.

In days of old, farmers would save seed to replant next year. Usually. Howeverthe practice was to save seeds from the biggest, most robust and healthy plants. This is natural selection at work; nature provides the genetic mutations and man selects the best to regrow. A natural process.

Hybridization is man purposefully pollinating the biggest, most robust and healthy plants together. Plants don’t generally pollinate plants of other species, so this hybridization usually only occurs within the same subset of species. This is another natural process. Admittedly man is helping by ‘kissing’ flowers together, however, this is merely a mimic of the bees, ants and other pollinators, as seen in nature.

How Does G.M.O. Fit It?

For starters, G.M.O. Food plants are started in a laboratory. In this ‘creation’ of new plant strains, there are patents that are worth a LOT of money to big-ag. G.M. foods are produced so that farmers can spray the shit out of their crops with Roundup (active constituent glyphosate) to kill weeds. The GM crops are genetically engineered to withstand the chemical assault of the glyphosate. And they call it food.

As far as I’m concerned, food has always been FREE! Grow your food and keep the seeds. Get a compost heap going and maybe even get a couple of chickens, just like grandma used to do. She knows what’s what!

The most worrying thing for me is the unknown and seemingly purposefully hidden, long-term outcomes of long-term studies into the effects on humans. I also wonder why lobbyists fight for labelling of G.M. foods. If you are proud of your product, you shout it from the rooftops, don’t you?

Poisoned Air

Have you looked UP lately? Seen any ‘new’ types of clouds? You’re not alone. And, what IS that rainbow oil slick looking clouds on most days? The only thing that’s really safe to say is, the air quality isn’t what it used to be. Get your air clean, especially inside your house and car. In the house, you can grow indoor plants and use air purifiers. In the car, you obviously can’t keep the plants, but you can get little car air purifiers that do the job well. If you sit in traffic, I’d say the car air purifier might just save your life.

Wi-Fi electromagnetic signals are invisible but can be detrimental to the human body. An invisible toxin that is often overlooked. Turn off your Wi-Fi signal before you go to bed, that way, at least you have a chance of having an electromagnetically uninterrupted sleep. Also, try to sit as far away from the Wi-Fi transmitter as possible. Radio waves follow the inverse square parameters, whereby, each time you double the distance from the device, you halve the energy that reaches you.

Dr. Edward Group DC, NP, DACBN, DCBCN, DABFM says that Wi-Fi affects cell growth, derails brain function and that it neutralizes sperm, promotes cardiac stress and may even contribute to cancer.

Poisoned Water

My water journey has been a long one. I’m still not quite happy with the situation just yet, but I’m working on it. I am now at the point, 2 years down the track, where I am drinking the cleanest water I can lay my hands on. The one thing I need to work on is rain capture; I don’t have any! Well, I do, but it currently consists of 10-litre water containers and catching the rain as it comes. When I run out of that, I buy water and run it through my Southern Cross water purifier. I have three now. Two in use and one for spare. Yes, the top ups are constant, but it gives great peace of mind and satisfaction to know that the water my children and I drink, is the cleanest I can provide.

Fluoride is one of the main toxins you are looking to avoid by drinking filtered water. The dangers of fluoride aren’t really debated, other than regarding just how dangerous it is for the human body. Take one look at Dr. Mercola’s site and you will find about 90 articles just about fluoride. Yes, it’s that important to remove from your diet!

Poisoned Mind

T.V. – Not only do you NEED to NOT tune into the so-called ‘news’ you also need to be mindful of the T.V. shows/series. Depicted in the T.V. series is the way they want you to live, eat, play and be with your families. Did you know that there are approximately 1200 mainstream ‘news’ outlets in the world and that when you trace back ownership of these media outlets, is goes back to about 6 owners?

Cleansing our minds of the constant blast from the media is a great way to start clearing your mind of all the rubbish it’s been fed all your life. SWITCH OFF THE SIGNAL! Read a book, hug a loved one, go for a walk, walk your dog, dance, call your friend for a chat. The list of things to do, other than sit in front of a T.V. having your mind programmed, is endless.

Conclusion

There are many ways of clearing your life of all the poisons you’re assaulted with on a daily basis. Everything is a process, and you’ve got to start somewhere. Take your first steps in doing something about improving your air, water, food and mind. Or continue on your journey if you’ve already begun. The possibilities are seemingly endless, but just focus on one of them and you’re off to a fantastic start!

Good luck!

The Easy Peasy Way To Say Bye Bye To Cancer

Please understand that when I write I am only targeting and attacking those that need to be targeted or attacked because of mistreatments and utter disregard for the true and sincere heling of people.

The American people are agonized, ill, sick, diseased and exploited, hanging on the cross of despair and brainwashed into accepting the maliciously cruel malpractice of an incompetent, negligent, impersonal, and ignorantly schooled American medical community.

We are sedated, drugged, needled, burned and cut, then left to die, uncured, by a self-proclaimed savior and benevolent father figure – the American medical doctor.

The truth concerning cancer and all other major diseases has been outlawed in America. Millions of Americans who hopelessly suffer from cancer or other major diseases are entitled to the truth.

In Europe, Mexico and other countries, countless numbers of cancer sufferers are being restored to vibrant health by natural methods employed by medical doctors working harmoniously with the laws of nature.

That cause of cancer, its prevention and the effective therapy to eliminate it has been known for hundreds of years by those not being subjected to “hookerism” by Big Pharma.

The U.S. Government, the American Cancer Society, the American Medical Association, and untold numbers of other highly endowed foundations and organizations waste billions of dollars in meaningless research, forever making believe to discover a “miracle drug” that will annihilate a cancer causing virus or agent that does not exist. The American medical world continues to emphasize their tireless efforts to finding a cure for this nightmare of suffering.

When the AMA says there is no cure for cancer, they are correct. But, although cancer cannot be cured, it can be eliminated by a cancer victim’s own body’s healing process.

Your body is the greatest doctor in the world and can heal itself of any chemistry imbalance and bring it back to vital health if given the proper conditions, proper nutrition, and adequate elimination.

Your body is capable of eliminating all impurities from within by itself, can detoxify, purify, regenerate, rejuvenate, and restore itself to complete equilibrium, and will do so if given the chance.

The American medical community has successfully brainwashed all levels of American society, from the layman to many of the most learned scientists, to believe the erroneous assumption that no one knows what causes cancer or how to eliminate it.

The American people accept the American medical profession as the world authority on human survival. So, when they are sentenced to death by a diagnosis of cancer, they bite their tongues, shit in their pants, suffer quietly, and hopelessly die alone.

The American medical world has deviously blown the word “cancer” out of all reasonable proportion. Psychologically, to a person who has been diagnosed as having developed cancer, it might just as well be a sentence to death.

The shock is utterly devastating to a cancer victim. Brainwashed thoroughly, most people believe and accept the lie that cancer is the point of no return. So, they give up, stop fighting, and die. What a saddening outcome of a precious life.

But, the American medical profession says while we cannot cure cancer, we can soothe it with tranquilizers, we can poison it with drugs, we can burn it with x-rays, we can shoot it with needles, we can destroy the tissues, both negative and positive, with chemical agents, and if it doesn’t respond, then we cut it out with our trusty scalpel. Thank God there is a solution and all is not lost.

The attitude of the AMA is understandable. Having seized the seat on the right hand of God, and having deviously and knowingly brainwashed a captive American audience into believing its very survival depends on its savior – the American medical community – and after being instrumental in the U.S. Government legislating against any natural healing methods, is it any wonder that the American medical profession can do as it damn well pleases, within the law, which they also helped write, and not be held responsible to anyone?

The American medical system is a profit-oriented, monopolistic organization built on the principle of the more sickness, the more profit. That being the case, the elimination of disease, be it cancer or whatever, is contrary to the basic economic interests of our Big Pharma-medical-hospital-industry complex.

Disease is big business generating hundreds of billions dollars a year. There is no profit in healthy people. Keep ‘em sick, keep ‘em coming back, and laugh all the way to the bank.

What happened to the Hippocratic oath that medical doctors swear to? Why isn’t nutrition and biological hygiene part of the curriculum in the medical schools? Because the pharmaceutical industry pays for the curriculum in those schools!

Cancer is a treacherous disease! It grows insidiously over the years from auto-intoxication and self poisoning brought on by the denatured and devitalized dead food and putrefying flesh that a person eats, which the human body eventually cannot tolerate because it is poisonous.

Our giant food industry processes out the life-giving properties from most of the food you buy from your modern supermarket, aka the food cemeteries, leaving it dead. The life-giving chemicals and enzymes from pure, natural, alive food keeps your blood stream pure. But, when you continually consume denatured, devitalized, preserved, pasteurized, additive-laden junk food, your bodily system becomes poisoned beyond bodily toleration, and guess what? Cancer symptoms appear.

To add insult to injury, after you purchase this dead garbage to poison yourself with, to be sure it’s dead, you cook it and set up another infection-point in your intestines when you eat it. Then, because of all the organs of elimination – lungs, liver, kidneys, skin, and bowels – your system becomes poisoned and the poisons accumulate around the weakest organs and guess what? Cancer symptoms appear.

Let me put one thing in perspective: the human form is an herbivorous form. That means it is designed to eat plant-based foods. Let me put this into perspective.

The human saliva is alkaline. Plant based foods are alkaline. When you chew plant-based foods, which come in contact with the saliva, that foods break down and you can almost drink what you are eating. Plant-based foods leave the body within three days.

When you eat flesh based foods, those foods are acidic. When the acidic foods mix with the alkaline saliva, nothing happens. So, you chew and chew and chew, and when you suck out all the blood and seasonings you swallow that acidic piece of flesh.

We know that flesh-based foods contain GMOs, antibiotics, artificial growth hormones, the ground up remains of the dead, dying, decaying, and diseased animals not fit for sale, mercury, PCBs, fluoride, toxic wastes, radiation and more.

The dairy is pasteurized and cooked to death containing no nutrients whatsoever and just liquid fat.

One egg gives the body more protein consumed than the body needs in a whole day. To offset this incredible amount of protein the body needs calcium. Where would the body get the calcium? How about the bones? Osteoarthritis anyone? Oh yeah, flesh foods leave the body in about six or seven days. That being the case, where do all those poisons go? How about the bloodstream and all the organs in the body? Gee, how could I ever get cancer?

Cancer develops when putrefaction is rampant and all encompassing. The body’s plumbing system clogs up beyond the body’s toleration point. Drugs, surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy only inhibit putrefaction (poison) elimination. Drugging cancer pain interrupts elimination, preventing the body from excreting its own wastes. Doping a diseased body with poison drugs is not only senseless but criminal.

So, if you are what you eat and you don’t make the change to eat what the body is designed to eat, and shit happens, it’s entirely on you.

Easy Steps To Get Started On Low Calories Diet Plan

Step 1: Be honest with yourself

Once you decide that you need to follow a low cal diet for losing weight, you have already started your journey.

The thorough mental process of making a firm decision is the key to getting your perfect, healthy shape. The rest are just tools to achieve that. Honestly, ask yourself why you want to change your body and lose weight. You can even make a list of the reasons, stick a picture of when you thought you were in a better shape or your favourite actress. Whatever motives you best.

Step 2. Decide on the diet plan

Next thing is that you must decide what low calories diet plan you actually want to follow. There are plenty of popular diet plans – vegan, paleo or the alkaline diet. They are often contradictory! Listen to your body and your moral compass. Maybe going vegan would be the best choice not only for your body but also for the environment?

Don’t just go by the name of the diet or celebrity endorsement, take the time to know what exactly all plans offer. What you need to do and how will it fit into your daily schedule. You must have the will-power to stick to the low cal diet to get started with the low-calorie diet plan.

Step 3: Make a day by day plan

On day one, you must decide which low cal plan you are going to follow. No matter what plan you choose, you will basically be eating less of carbs, oil and sugar. Your goal here is to lower the intake of calories and carbs so that the body uses fat stored within the body to get energy.

On day two, make your house low cal low carb diet plan friendly. That means you have to take stock of what eating items you have at home in your refrigerator, cabinets, drawers, pockets and pantry. Throw away or give away anything that has high sugar, high carb, and high-calorie content. Those ways even you crave, you will not get a ready answer for your cravings and you will have to opt for something healthier.

That day itself, make a list of what you will be eating and what needs to be purchased for the coming week. Include raw food, fresh food, drinks, snacks whatever you will need, obviously all of these have to be low cal and low carb. Then go shopping according to the list, no extra eating items to be bought.

Then, at the beginning of the third day, you can start following your low carb and low calories diet plan strictly. It is always good to start fresh as the day starts; you will be more committed towards your goal and find the diet a new way to transform your life and the way you look. On this third day, take some time out to cook some low cal low carb food for yourself. Then you will not have the impulse to grab on just anything when you feel hungry, instead, you will have something healthy cooked by you very well within your planned diet.

The next few days are going to be little rough, as you will face some withdrawal symptoms. You might experience a headache, dizziness and tiredness because your body craves for sugary food that it is used to. Nevertheless, do not worry, all these symptoms will subside within 3-4 days. Then the going will be smooth.

Now you have a step-by-step approach on how to get started on low cal diet. Commit yourself and you will not regret having your favourite calorie ridden dish when you see the great weight loss results for yourself.

Whenever you are losing hope and motivation remind yourself about the incentives to make this goal. Did you want to seem more attractive to the opposite sex, become more confident or probably the most important – be healthier and happier? It’s worth the effort! Don’t give up.

I wish you the best of luck!

Easy Steps To Get Started On Low Calories Diet Plan

It’s never been easy being a teenager. But is this now a generation in crisis?

Mollycoddled and cosseted or stressed and over-pressured. Energised and engaged or bored and turned off. Young people have so many labels and stereotypes slapped on them it’s a wonder these are not visible on their endless selfies. What is undeniably true is that the evidence suggests that rates of depression, self-harm and anxiety among young people are at unprecedented levels.

Youth unemployment is more than 13%, the cost of higher education is rapidly rising, a drought of affordable housing coupled with low pay is keeping many young people sealed under the parental roof and trapped in what one report called “suspended adulthood”. The ubiquity of the internet and social media, with its dark underbelly of hardcore pornography, body shaming and cyberbullying, is encroaching on their wellbeing, while a relentless focus on academic high-achieving is turning up the pressure in the classroom. Youth, traditionally thought of as the most enviable time of life, can now look like a deeply challenging and sometimes unpleasant time of life.

But is the experience of adolescence – defined as the period after childhood, from puberty to maturity – any tougher now than it was for previous generations? And when does it stop, given that some experts argue that full intellectual maturity is reached at the age of 27.

Among the events planned for World Mental Health Day, an exhibition by a small but successful charity in London aims to unpick some of the issues around the “lived experience of adolescent development”. Open Door has helped thousands of young people with therapy and support with problems including depression, anxiety, self-harm, drug and alcohol misuse, eating disorders, psychosis, sexuality and gender identity issues since it opened in 1976.

The exhibition, Adolescence Then and Now, marks the charity’s 40th anniversary, and director Julia Britton, one of the capital’s leading consultant child and adolescent psychotherapists, says demand for its services is greater than ever. “We are operating with a constant waiting list of around 100, we can’t even meet local demand. Parts of the country have nothing at all for young people with mental illness. The lack of provision is a huge issue for now, and a huge issue being stored up for the future.”

She says many of the issues facing young people have not changed. “I look at myself as a teenager in the 1970s and so many issues were around: teen pregnancies, drug and alcohol misuse, psychotic breakdowns, financial and identity pressures. But there are many differences, too. The context certainly is different. I think there are far more pressures educationally, more sense that it’s all hinged on one exam, and certainly teachers are hugely concerned about the mental distress they are seeing. Then there’s cyberbullying where you can’t switch off and you can’t get away. Pornography, a normal part of development, is now very far removed from Playboy. A lot of young people are disturbed by what they see online.

“The internet is both helpful and not. If young people type in ‘self-harm’, they can either go to a Young Minds website where they will be offered help and support, or to a destructive group which is discussing how to self-harm and hide eating disorders. So it’s good and bad,” she says.

The sense of a struggling generation has undoubtedly taken on new dimensions. Last week a poll by the charity Young Women’s Trust found that “suspended adulthood” was affecting the mental health of one in three 18-to-30-year-olds who felt worried about the future and under financial pressures due to low pay and lack of work or opportunities. More than half of the 4,000 surveyed were having to live at home with their parents.

“Make no mistake,”says Dr Carole Easton, chief executive of the charity, “we’re talking about a generation of young people in crisis. It is not in any of our interests to write off an entire generation.”

Abena is 18. A former mental health service user at Open Door, she interviewed artist Grayson Perry in a video project for the coming exhibition. They discussed the contrasts in their teenage experiences. He told her: “My family was quite screwed up, it was quite a volatile household and quite scary.” In 1976 Perry was 16 and had already been thrown out of his home by his stepmother over his transvestism: “When I was that age you hung out on the village green and got bored with others. I had low impulse control, I was incredibly angry until I went into therapy.”

What most struck Abena, she says, was that, while his cross-dressing was a major taboo and so a pressure point for him as a teenager, “he doesn’t remember having any issues over his body image at all. He doesn’t remember having a conversation about body image. But he remembers trying to keep his dressing-up from his parents and how everybody thought transvestism was very strange and taboo. That identity didn’t exist.

“Now I think that would be far more acceptable and people would be quite relaxed about that. But I feel like there are very real pressures around body image now that he didn’t have. Having social media now, it’s real pressure around how you look, making sure every picture is perfect,” she says.

“So the pressure he had then isn’t what we have now, but we have other ones. And it all depends on where you go in the world. I’m a black woman, but that would be a very different issue if I was living in America, for example. As a young person now I don’t drink very much, but I’m going to university where there is a real culture of drinking heavily and I find that really daunting. I’ll be in a minority, and being in a minority can be very uncomfortable,” says Abena. “I don’t think I’d have gotten through my bad times, to be honest, if I hadn’t been able to access Open Door. I don’t know how I’d have coped on my own. All the worries I had which felt too big to say to teachers or even my family, I was able to say there. It felt like home.”

Leigh Wildman, a therapist and support worker for young people with special needs, is 54. “I often wonder about whether I’d be on computer games if I’d been a teenager now instead of climbing trees, kicking a tin can down the road and making camps as we did then. Then later on there was music, of course, counter-culture music and art which rescued me. I left school at 15, but in those days you could go round the industrial estate and get a job and I did lots of jobs before taking off hitchhiking round Europe when I was 18,” she says.

“My mum was pleased, but I feel young people today are much more fearful. They stay at school longer, at home longer, and the world looks very daunting. They have to knuckle down at school and there’s no space to be light-hearted or to drift a little, to find out who they are, what kind of people they like. I had time for that, and I’m very glad I did,” adds Wildman.

Another teenager, a client at Open Door, is Elena, 17. She says all her friends at school suffer panic attacks and anxiety: “If you drop grades a bit, you feel a failure, you feel the teachers immediately ignore you for the people who are high achievers.

“It’s like you have to be this robot. I think it’s harder now in terms of all the pressures to look a certain way and keep up with everything, and I think it’s harder in terms of trying to speak to your parents or people at school who are not trained because when they were growing up mental health was not something anyone spoke about.”

And she adds: “ I’d cry in the classroom a lot at school, but teachers would just be a bit uncomfortable and you’d not want to open up. I’d just say I was having a bad day. I feel a lot more hope for the future now than I used to. I never used to think there was a future for me.”

Easy and Cheap Ways to Eat Organic Food

Eating healthy is becoming a big priority for people of all ages. One healthy eating habit that’s proving to be very popular these days is eating organic foods. However, some people are hesitant to try it because they think a diet based on organic foods is bound to be expensive. That is arguably the biggest myth in organic eating.

The fact is that you can still eat organic even on a tight budget. You just have to find a cheap and easy way that works for you.

1.    Be a creative shopper

Some techniques can help you save a lot of money when shopping for organic food. Before making a purchase, you can check out different retailers, as well as online stores, to see which shops offer the best prices for particular organic ingredients.

Aside from comparing prices, you can also take a look at their promotions. You can also make use of items such as discount coupons to help you save some more extra cash.

2.    Buy food in season

Fresh produce is one of the most integral parts of the organic eating lifestyle. The problem is that their prices tend to fluctuate with the seasons (among other things).

One great strategy that will help you save money is to shop for food that is in season. In-season fruits and vegetables tend to be at their lowest prices during this time of the year. As a bonus, in-season produce is also more nutritious and delicious!

3.    Use affordable ingredients

Some people may think that just because something is labeled “organic,” it is automatically expensive. In fact, there are foods considered to be organic that won’t burn a hole in your savings account.

Consider going for affordable ingredients if you cannot afford the pricier ones. After all, it’s the process of growing them that makes food “organic”. Examples of cheap organic food include lentils, beans, eggs, seeds, and certain greens.

4.    Go large

They say that bigger is better, and going large is an easy way to eat organic. There is truth to this when it comes to food shopping, especially if you are feeding multiple people. Large quantities of food are priced lower than their smaller-portioned counterparts. Also, buying in bulk is cheaper compared to buying packaged food in “individualized” portions.

You might ask yourself how you are going to deal with this massive amount of food. This is where your skills in advanced menu planning come into play.

5.    Get ingredients you’ll actually use

They say that you are bound to lose what you don’t use. You have to take this same approach when you are shopping for food. It is important that you prioritize your shopping list according to what you and the members of your family are going to eat.

After all, it’s utterly useless if you’ll buy a specific ingredient at a discount if no one in your house is going to eat it. Also, it won’t hurt if you start planning in advance for leftovers and how you can use them for future meals.

Doctors make easy money from medical marijuana. What happens when it"s legal?

Frank Lucido, a California physician, received a phone call in 2012 from a doctor in Colorado.

Like Lucido – one of California’s best-known cannabis-friendly physicians – the Colorado doctor had been writing recommendations for medical marijuana, the paperwork required for patients to access cannabis at medical marijuana retail outlets in his state.

Unlike Lucido, the Colorado doctor was worried about the future of his practice.

Related: California marijuana initiative qualifies for the ballot

There was a legalization measure on the ballot for recreational marijuana in Colorado that fall. If it passed, he was looking for somewhere to move, where he could continue writing recommendations in the semi-legal gray area of medical cannabis.

“What’s the climate in California?” he asked.

Colorado voters did approve Amendment 64, one of the first two state legalization measures to pass. Lucido isn’t sure if the doctor did end up moving west. But if he did, he may need to move again.

This November, California – along with three other states – will vote on whether to approve recreational use of the drug. The state’s measure – Proposition 64, the Adult Use of Marijuana Act – would allow adults aged 21 and older to possess up to an ounce of cannabis and buy the drug in stores – no doctor’s note required.

If approved, Prop 64 could spell the end of a cottage industry that has attracted entrepreneurs and brought mockery on the notion of medical cannabis.

Cannabis recommendations are often issued by places such as San Francisco Green Evaluations, a “clinic” in an upstairs office at Amoeba Music, a record store in the city’s tourist-friendly Haight-Ashbury district. There, Samuel Dismond III, a former primary care physician with nearly 30 years of experience, writes recommendations for as little as $ 45 – and “super fast”, as multiple Yelp reviewers put it.

Frank Lucido is one of California’s best-known cannabis-friendly physicians.

Dismond says he started writing cannabis recommendations after two serious car accidents left him disabled. Unable to continue with primary care, he started writing recommendations one day a week.

“I was holding my nose when I tried it,” he said. “But then I saw an opportunity.”

“It’s been gangbusters-good.”

There’s also the likes of Roger J Foster, dubbed Dr Skype, who gave “exams” to patients in his Sacramento, California, office from his Las Vegas home via Skype. For these doctors, medical marijuana has meant easy money: $ 50 or $ 100 cash for a few minutes’ work, with the requirement that the recommendation be renewed annually.

“Most of the physicians – not all of them – but most of the physicians doing this had some kind of problem with their medical license,” Dismond said. “They had restrictions; they couldn’t do any other kind of medicine. They were doing rubber-stamp recommendations because they didn’t give a fuck. That’s how the bad reputation of cannabis physicians came about.”

Conservatives and law enforcement officials have criticized medical marijuana as a sham, with “script mills” akin to the “pill mills” churning out questionable prescriptions for opiates.

This has meant professional ridicule and ostracism for doctors like Lucido, who have sometimes been lumped in with the Dr Skypes and Venice Beach clinics where street hawkers try to wheedle tourists into seedy offices. Prosecutors in Santa Clara County, south of San Francisco, allege that at least one chain of clinics, 420 MD, is tied to organized crime.

The seasoned political operatives secured by Spotify billionaire Sean Parker, Prop 64’s main bankroller, took this into account in their campaign. The measure promises to reform medical marijuana and “reduce the number of unscrupulous medical MJ clinics”, said campaign spokesman Jason Kinney.

If the measure passes, medical cannabis would still exist in California, but patients would need a new recommendation from an “attending physician” and would be required to obtain a state-issued medical marijuana patient ID card.

The card will exempt them from state sales tax on cannabis, though a 15% excise tax would still apply, plus any local taxes cities and counties might apply.

The tax difference – plus the allowance for 18-to-20-year-olds to continue to access medical cannabis (children whose doctors recommend cannabis are allowed in dispensaries if accompanied by an adult) – give doctors such as Lucido reassurance that there will still be a demand for medical marijuana post-legalization.

They are also banking on legalization drawing more people, like those with chronic pain, to try non-psychoactive cannabis strains and products. Only about 5% of Californians say they use medical marijuana, according to a 2012 survey.

When Dr Jeffrey Hergenrather, of Sebastopol, California, started writing recommendations 16 years ago, only 10% of his patients had never tried cannabis. Now, he says, about half his patients seeking a 90-minute, $ 300 exam are new to the drug, including “kids with autism, kids with seizure disorder”.

For startups like HelloMD – which offer recommendations via mobile apps, marketed especially to tech-savvy, well-off consumers who use Uber and Airbnb – legalization could mean a segue to telehealth – patients videoconferencing with doctors over a secure channel.

“There’s a misconception that this market is really just a recreational market,” said Mark Hadfield, the founder of HelloMD. “We think that there’s a much bigger market for health and wellness consumers.”

Under Prop 64, Lucido expects “25% to 50%” of his practice to go away.

“But we’ll still see patients who need guidance,” he said.

As for the Dr Skypes, the doctors in record stores, and his Colorado colleague? Lucido defends them – to a degree.

“They gave us a bad name and delayed legalization by a few years,” he said. “But say what you want about the script mills – they never harmed anybody.” At the same time, “90% of the doctors doing that will have to go out and find a job.”

How To Flush Away Urinary Difficulty In 5 Easy Steps

If you’re like many men over the age of 50, things may increasingly be not working quite as smoothly as they used to when you try and urinate.  Dribbling, a weak urinary stream, always feeling a ‘heaviness’ or like you never got ‘it all out’, having to go more often and get up at night repeatedly…all these signs are unfortunately tell-tale signs that you may have an enlarged prostate.  While this is one of the most common problems aging men often complain of, that doesn’t mean you have to fall victim to this.  Consider these five simple, natural strategies to improve your prostate health and control of your urinary habits!

Practice Kegel Exercises

Yes, Kegel exercises are not only for women but men can benefit from these too.  If you are unfamiliar with, Kegels are stationary exercises you do while sitting where you actively contract the muscles of the pelvic floor (i.e. the muscles around the anus and internal to the penis) that you use to control urination and/or defecation.  Like all muscles, these can be strengthened with routine exercise, giving men greater control and muscular strength to encourage a good flow when urinating as well as stronger, more satisfying ejaculations.  Consider doing 3 sets of ten repetitions daily and if confused how to do this exactly, consider this article from the Mayo clinic to help guide you through the process.

Actively Decrease Inflammation

Many men don’t realize just how powerful a foe inflammation can be to them, and in particular, their prostate!  Because the prostate is a fatty tissue, many fat soluble toxins and other substances can become lodged and stored in there, potentially contributing to increasing inflammation over time.  And like most things that get inflamed, the prostate then enlarges and swells, putting pressure on the bladder, which creates urinary issues.  A big contributor to this inflammation is the standard American diet, which is full of pro-inflammatory foods. Key dietary tips to improve your inflammation status include:

Actively seek to increase your anti-inflammatory omega 3 intake (think mackerel, sardines, trout, walnuts, chia seeds, hemp and flax seeds)

Eliminate pro-inflammatory omega 6 fats (for instance in hydrogenated and trans fat oils, refined vegetable oils (i.e. corn, soybean, rapeseed, peanut)

Minimize non-grass fed animal products in the diet as well as refined sugars

Include more vegetables and fruits (preferably organic) in the diet.  Aim for 7-10 servings daily!

Practice Detoxification Strategies

You will see this tip come back in many blogs and articles, because it is SO important in today’s polluted world that we actively make this a conscious habit in our daily routines.  Detox teas, supplements such as milk thistle, glutathione, N-acetyl cysteine, dry or infrared saunas, alternating showers & dry skin brushing,  regular exercise,  and even potentially colonic irrigation (especially for those who tend to have trouble with regular elimination—i.e. constipation), can all be invaluable in the long-run in keeping your toxin burden down.  For those with considerable toxin burden, they may want to consider testing and working with a holistically minded physician to employ additional methods such as chelation therapy. And don’t forget about the importance of keeping your gut microbiome nourished with good probiotics as your good bacteria actively help us detoxify!

Optimize Hormone Balance

When the male body’s hormone balance is thrown off and there is too much estrogen in relation to how much testosterone there should be, this can also contribute to enlargement of the prostate gland.  This is yet another reason why it is so important that you consider testing your blood levels of your hormones and seek to optimize them through research supported strategies.

Employ Natural Herbal Extracts

A considerable issue for many men suffering with BPH and its accompanying litany of side effects is that the urethra and the muscles within the bladder are constricted and contracted, making it very difficult for urine or semen to pass when urinating or ejaculating.  This can contribute to the many uncomfortable symptoms we reviewed earlier as well as retrograde ejaculation (where the semen is unable to exit through the penis because of urethral constriction and instead is pushed back internally, often into the bladder).  So a major advancement in helping men improve these very unpleasant side effects has been the discovery of such compounds like Flower Pollen Extract and Saw Palmetto. Such compounds in clinical studies have been shown to improve urinary flow, decrease prostate size, and diminish urine retention in the bladder.  Furthermore, they have also been illustrated to diminish pain in the perianal region as well as improve prostatitis conditions. So if you’re one of the many men needlessly suffering from BPH, don’t hesitate in helping yourself today through these naturally proven strategies to improve urinary and sexual function!

Between the cucumbers and the pepper, there’s plenty to like about this drink from a health standpoint. At the same time, it’s a cool summertime drink with a little bit of a kick.

With a few types of fruit, some ice, and a blender, you can make yourself a smoothie that’s both healthy and tasty in a matter of minutes. A Easy Vision Test For Alzheimer"s? Scientists Unveil Eye Scans

A straightforward eye test could soon reveal regardless of whether you have Alzheimer’s Disease – or even if the condition looms in your future. In reality, according to trial final results launched this week, the vision test detected indications of Alzheimer’s 15 to twenty many years just before the look of clinical indicators.

This potentially game-modifying information comes out of the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference, presently ongoing in Copenhagen, Denmark, where two presentations highlighted the likely of new vision screening technologies that use retinal imaging to measure amyloid plaque formation in the back of the eye.

The technological innovation is primarily based on an astoundingly basic notion: The brain-clogging amyloid plaques regarded as an indicator of Alzheimer’s can also be noticed in the back of the eye, which is considered a mirror for brain well being. ”If this test operates, then a single day screening for Alzheimer’s condition could be as straightforward as acquiring your eyes checked,” said Yogi Kanagasingam, a single of the researchers conducting clinical trials.

The 1st check, from Neurovision Imaging of Sacramento, California, utilizes retinal picture fluorescence photography to scan the supranucleus region of the retina for a fluorescent signature characteristic of beta amyloid plaques. In planning for the scan, participants consider curcumin, the ingredient in turmeric that provides the spice its fluorescent yellow shade, to “light up” the amyloid plaques with a specific fluorescent signature.

Preliminary data launched on 40 trial topics showed that amounts of amyloid in the retina correlated closely with amyloid levels in the brain as revealed by PET (positron emission tomography) scans, the current test strategy of selection. The retinal imaging was also in a position to inform topics with Alzheimer’s from those with out the illness with one hundred % sensitivity and 80.six % specificity. Neurovision is functioning with Australia’s Edith Cowan University McCusker Alzheimer’s Research Basis to check their retinal imaging scan.

NeuroVision isn’t alone in the retinal imaging discipline  a second information presentation, this time from Massachusetts-based Cognoptix, also showed promising final results from another pioneering technology. Cognoptix’s SAPPHIRE II technologies utilizes a fluorescent ligand eye scanning (FLES) method in which a topical ointment applied to the lens of the eye binds to beta-amyloid. The plaques are then detected with a laser scanner.

The Cognoptix clinical trial data, published in February in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Condition and Other Dementias, involved forty participants and predicted Alzheimer’s with 85 percent sensitivity. It differentiated participants with Alzheimer’s from people with out the illness with 95% accuracy.

A retinal imaging check for Alzheimer’s, if it proved accurate, could dramatically modify the way Alzheimer’s is diagnosed. “Presently the exams that are used in clinical trials are PET scan of the brain and CSF by way of lumbar puncture to measure amounts of amyloid and tau,” says CEO NeuroVision CEO Steven Verdooner. ”Our retinal imaging check is anticipated to be meaningfully less pricey than a PET scan, is noninvasive, and possibly much more sensitive.”

What’s far more, due to the fact a retinal imaging test is reasonably straightforward to get and without major longterm overall health effects, it could be re-administered often to keep track of the progress of the illness.  “We feel the potential to measure progression is really effective and are engaging in partnerships for therapeutic trials to demonstrate that out,” says Verdooner.

Proper now, simply because PET scans are radioactive, medical doctors don’t like to repeat them multiple instances and typically wait at least 18 months ahead of administering a 2nd PET scan. In accordance to Verdooner, Neurovision’s test can be repeated after an interval as brief as three months.

Whilst a vision test for Alzheimer’s is not going to be commercially accessible anytime soon, the wait isn’t going to be as prolonged as you may believe, either. The present trial winds up in the fall, at which stage Neurovision will get started doing work with academic institutions to carry on validating the retinal imaging procedure.

Commercialization is expected to be in the 2nd half of 2015, Verdooner says. “Once commercialized, we assume it to be accessible in doctors’ offices and can be administered by request from the patient or a referring medical professional.”

The retinal imaging check will be administered as element of a bundle, along with blood-primarily based biomarkers and cognitive screening, Verdooner says. “The paradigm we’re aiming at is a battery of tests that is price-effective, rapidly, and non-invasive.”

Alzheimer"s: Easy blood check could speed up diagnosis

Such a test could at first be utilized to choose sufferers for clinical trials of experimental remedies being produced to try to halt progression of Alzheimer’s, the researchers mentioned, and may one day move into routine use in doctors’ clinics.

“Alzheimer’s commences to impact the brain a lot of many years prior to individuals are diagnosed (and) several of our drug trials fail since by the time sufferers are provided the medicines the brain has presently been too severely affected,” stated Simon Lovestone of Oxford University, who led this perform from King’s University London.

Alzheimer’s is the most typical type of dementia, a brain-wasting illness which in 2010 was estimated to be costing the globe $ 604 billion a year. The fatal disease has an effect on 44 million men and women around the world, with the variety set to triple by 2050, the campaign group Alzheimer’s Disease Worldwide says.

Several large pharma companies like Roche, Eli Lilly , Merck &amp Co and Johnson &amp Johnson, are pursuing various approaches to get to the root lead to of Alzheimer’s and attempt to locate treatment options to halt its progression.

However over the previous 15 years, much more than a hundred experimental Alzheimer’s medicines have failed in trial. Lovestone and other professionals think this could be simply because drug trials are conducted also late, in patients whose issue has already gone as well far.

A predictive test for use just before folks produce signs would support researchers select the proper people for drug trials, and help demonstrate whether the experimental drugs are doing work.

How Wholesome Is Your Heart? This Easy Check Might Tell, Review Says

Has your medical doctor ever checked your blood pressure in each arms? If not, you’re missing out on a worthwhile check of heart well being.

That’s the conclusion of Harvard professor Ido Weinberg, whose latest investigation shows that a much more than 10-point distinction in systolic blood stress among arms can be a red flag for heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular illness.

You’d count on that it wouldn’t matter which arm the nurse puts the cuff on – blood pressure is blood pressure, correct? Not so quickly.

According to Weinberg’s review, published in the March problem of the American Journal of Medicine, about 10 percent of adults more than 40 had interarm differences of more than ten points – and this stage spread was connected with an almost forty % improve in threat of heart assault, stroke, or other cardiovascular event.

While authorities knew that extremely big distinctions in arm-to-arm blood stress readings could propose cardiovascular illness, this is the initial analysis to hyperlink a relatively tiny distinction of just 10 factors with substantially increased risk.

As element of Harvard/Massachusetts Basic Hospital’s Framingham Heart Review, the researchers followed 3390 healthy people age 40 and older (with no prior indicator of heart disease), over a time period of 13 years and found a 38% risk enhance in these with a ten-stage or greater arm-to-arm variation. (The typical arm-to-arm or interarm difference, the researchers say, is significantly less than five factors.)

A earlier examine published in The Lancet in 2012 discovered that a 15-point arm-to-arm difference in systolic blood stress doubled the threat of peripheral artery disease, or clogging of the arteries even more away from the heart.

Why is possessing a variation in blood stress one particular a single side of the body so substantial? Because it suggests blockage or slowing of blood movement, most probably from artery-clogging plaque. The other potential result in, an aortic dissection or tear in the aorta, is even much more significant.

Concludes Weinberg: “This examine supports the likely worth of identifying the interarm systolic blood pressure distinction as a basic clinical indicator of increased cardiovascular danger.”

Systolic blood stress (the best amount when your medical professional tells you your BP is “X in excess of X”) measures the strain in your arteries as your blood flows through whilst your heart is beating. Diastolic, the second or reduce amount, measures blood strain although the heart is resting among beats.

You want your blood stress under 120/80 above that is deemed prehypertension and something over 140/90 signifies hypertension and the want for intervention.

According to the American Heart Association, systolic blood strain is considered far more essential than diastolic as a measure of cardiovascular overall health since it exhibits how strongly and plainly your blood if flowing.

If you are like me, reading through this review will make you want to run out and verify your personal arm-to-arm blood pressure ratio. If you have a home blood pressure monitor -  a valuable well being tool for any individual whose BP is even slightly elevated – you can examine each arms your self correct now.

If not, you can get your blood pressure checked anytime at your regional drug retailer, or ask the healthcare staff to repeat your blood strain screening in each arms following time you see your physician.

Considering that 2005, the American Heart Association’s blood strain screening tips have advisable taking blood pressure readings in the two arms as a baseline reading. But I really do not know about you – I’ve by no means experienced that occurring. So I’m surely going to inquire.

How to reside to one hundred in 10 easy steps

2. He is acquired a sense of humour

When my cousin was an infant, he had a huge head and skinny body, so I known as him Mr Lollipop, which Grandad identified fairly funny. Grandad took him to the medical doctor to get his head measured, just to make positive he wasn’t a “peculiar boy” – which is a rough translation of a term that sounds a lot funnier in Chinese. Seems a bit obvious but you don’t get to a hundred by getting miserable and moping about.

3. He takes care of himself

He will get up each and every morning, will get dressed, brushes his hair and normally will take care of his look. I discovered a bottle of Miller Harris in his bathroom cabinet, even though I’m not positive he nonetheless uses it. We went to John Lewis to get sneakers the other day and he’s nevertheless very distinct.

four. He enjoys foods

He isn’t going to eat superfoods, but he eats heartily and effectively. The famously healthy Chinese diet regime doesn’t seem to be that wholesome to me, at least not by the standards of Whole Foods, quinoa, kale, pomegranates and all of that nonsense. Barring some peculiar broths that my grandmother brews occasionally, he eats what he likes, which is mostly roast duck, pork stomach, fish, chicken wings, steamed vegetables, sweets, biscuits and dim sum.

5. He has a zest for daily life

He’s got that spark in his eye, that joie de vivre that ebullient young children have. It’s hard to describe, but we all know it when we see it. A handful of many years in the past he had pneumonia and almost died. I looked all around at the other individuals in the ward and there was one particular bad guy, all around the identical age as Grandad, who looked in this kind of turmoil – like a Francis Bacon painting. But Grandad was able to draw on some deep, inner resource. Even as the doctors and nurses thrashed about him, and the machines went haywire, I never ever doubted for a second he would make it. And so it was. A week later we were laughing and joking in excess of dim sum once more. I didn’t realise how significant it was until finally the medical professional informed me afterwards. In the Band of Brothers the soldiers could inform which one particular of their mates would make it through the war without having a scratch. They had an aura about them. Possibly Grandad is one particular of individuals guys.

six. He located accurate enjoy and by no means allow go

Grandad met Grandma when he was a 30 year outdated soldier on the run from the Communists. My grandmother was then the 17 yr previous daughter of a gold trader and landowner from Tai O, a village on the outskirts of Hong Kong. The Japanese took every thing her loved ones owned. Grandad sought refuge in her property and they’ve been together ever considering that. On the rare events they are apart for a extended period of time, they seem to be a bit lost with no a single one more.

seven. He lives in London

Receiving the bus, crossing the street, strolling by means of busy streets, shopping, going to eating places, just the common sturm and drang of city existence seems to operate for him – keeps the noodle cooking. Grandad by no means dreamt of a rural idyll. He likes cities. And compared to Hong Kong, London is rather bucolic.

8. He’s received an iPad and he’s not afraid to use it

His eyesight signifies he can not actually variety, so he uses the camera to take photos of his doctor’s letters and then emails them to me to translate. He’s got a mobile mobile phone as well and it took him a whilst to get his head about reply machines but now he leaves me irate messages when I miss his calls.

9. He helps make buddies very easily

When you get to one hundred, you need to replenish your stock. There’s a waitress in the Jade Backyard restaurant on Wardour Street known as Man Yee, which sounds like “money”, so we get in touch with her Funds. She’s genuinely good mates with Grandma and Grandad. In reality, there is a total bunch of waiters and waitresses that they’re good buddies with. Money gave us a totally free plate of chilli duck tongues the other day, which was great.

ten. He is not a d—head

You do not get to reside to hundred by being a d—head. A lot of occasions Grandad could have been killed or kidnapped, but a person constantly assisted him. Why? He is not a d—head. He’s not 1 for lectures or sermons but a single thing he’s said to me a couple of times is that in all my dealings with men and women I should often be “accurate of heart”, which I consider indicates to be genuine and truthful. As soon as I purchased a Japanese lady residence and the first point he did was inform me how, prior to the war, wealthy Chinese families would send their sons to boarding colleges in Japan and frequently come property with Japanese brides. That need to have been such a second for him…a Jap! In his residing room! Or perhaps not. He just smiled benignly, just as he’s completed my whole life.

So now it"s seven a day? Here is my easy substitute: just end eating rubbish | Alex Renton

My youngsters are apple-cheeked and glossy-haired, sturdy and slender as willow wands. Not a filling in their heads, both. All the exact same, we had a loved ones council on diet last week. A review by the epidemiologists of University School, London discovered that the 5-a-day diet is inadequate. Seven or even ten portions of fruit and veg is a lot more like it and might reduce our odds of early death by 42% or much more. Odds worth having: so I asked them to audit their intake.

My daughter confessed that even though she has a banana most breaks, she did not like the school lunch fruit salad. She is possibly getting 4 a day, tops. My son explained he effortlessly ate five a day. You will not count chips, I countered, simply because they are made from potatoes (he did know that) and a potato, getting largely starch, does not make the NHS 5-a-day lists. I consider his score is maybe three – as negative as mine.

Abruptly, I saw developmental issues all around. The failure to discover Mandarin. The difficulties with extended division. The extreme allergic reaction to the word “walk”. May possibly there be scurvy lurking there also? Rickets? And how the hell had been we going to get up to seven a day? That is 2,555 portions of fruit and veg a year for every of us, and we would be residing longer, too. Need to we marry the children to greengrocers?

You can’t move in middle-class Britain these days for worrying foodies – it truly is the cult of the era – but I doubt several were auditing their 5-a-day last week, let alone contemplating upping their targets to seven. The scheme now passes most of us by, as significantly as the admonitions to get twenty minutes of aerobic exercising every day. Prescriptions from an additional globe, not the true one. As things stand, only thirty%, surveys say, make it to 5. Offered our notorious dishonesty when confronted by pollsters with concerns that touch on our self-regard, that signifies there are not many much more 5-a-day eaters in Britain than there are vegetarians.

Canvassing pals (true and on Twitter) about 5 a day, the dominant response is contempt. “Patronising, unscientific nonsense” from a finger-wagging government that likes to harass buyers on food and well being but fails to handle the genuine villains: Massive Sugar, fraudulent labelling, monopolising merchants. 5 a day is a “excellent driver of food waste,” suggested Rob Lyons, a author who fights a lonely battle against food/overall health nonsense. Think of the hordes of worrying-well filling fridges and fruit bowls with stuff no a single wants to eat.

There is truth in all that. We throw away two-thirds of the bagged salad we get and nearly half the apples. Undoubtedly, the food business has played its element in creating a straightforward, sensible guideline into anything guilt-laden and very lucrative. Really why Britvic is even now able to peddle its sugar-laden, fibre-free (and absurdly high-priced) Fruit Shoot drinks as portion of “your five-a-day” is unfathomable. (Note to parents: consider tapwater.)

When the NHS launched 5 A Day in 2002, the business insisted that, in return for its support, the lists must contain processed meals and drinks, which is in which the revenue lies. So baked beans, canned soup and veg, non-potato crisps, dried and tinned fruit and even fruit-flavoured ice lollies are on the NHS’s lists of advisable five-a-day food items. “Much better without sugar,” say the guidelines: but, outside overall health outlets, tinned fruit usually comes in sugar syrup, and baked beans and soups are laden with it.

The portion sizes are made to obfuscate. Did you know that you require two spears of broccoli to make a single portion of five a day? (What’s a spear?) That a portion of veg is 3 heaped tablespoons of peas and beans or eight cauliflower florets? As for fruitcake, it ought to be only 150g and incorporate 50% fruit, which couple of industrial cakes do.

“Often go through the label,” says the NHS Live Well website, in which 5 a day’s guidelines are laid out. In a world the place the common time invested studying a supermarket shelf for the item you require is just four seconds, this is plainly Not Going To Occur.

If the state should nanny, the guidelines have to be logical and simple. Then it requirements to police the company sector. That doesn’t occur. The Advertising Specifications Authority generally takes a 12 months or a lot more to rule on misleading statements. And manufacturers get advantage. Just lately, I attempted to challenge a brand of cherry juice sold in most supermarkets on its outrageous claims – like that 1 glass “is made up of the overall health positive aspects of about twenty portions of fruit and veggies”. I received no response, from the company, from its PR agency or from Waitrose.

Even meals writers – God forbid! – are capable of utter nonsense in the result in of marketing 5 a day. On a common web site that boasts “Sensible women click right here!”, I located guidance from “fat reduction specialist” Dave Fletcher. “Slip lemon segments into your water or herbal tea to refresh your drink and help you digest fat… Then to improve your five a day, eat the lemon afterwards.”

Five a day has some wise defenders. They say that the reality that it is not scientifically based mostly is unimportant – the campaigns have, at least, place a beneficial notion of balanced diet program and the significance of fresh, non-meat food items into the public thoughts. That may possibly be, but it has been a blunt device that may possibly have forced plenty of challenging-up dad and mom into getting fruit their children did not want. (In Australia, wisely, the line is: 5 veg, two fruit.)

But as scientific study on condition and diet program matures, it gets more and more clear that generating sure you consume these things isn’t good ample. Fibre and vitamin C, and the minerals and micro-nutrients in uncooked fruit and veg, are surely a plus. (When you boil the veg, most of them are lost with the water.) But the positive aspects of antioxidants, the “superfruit” miracle ingredient of this decade, are nevertheless far from proved.

These days, other rules are much more apposite. Don’t believe in meals retail. Purchase low cost beef and you will end up eating knackered Romanian horses. Don’t believe in “healthier” or “all-natural” on a label – they do not mean something any more. Remember that all sugar, not just “additional”, leads to weight problems and diabetes, and is all over the place: in mayonnaise, in “healthier” prepared-manufactured meals, in fruit juices. Consume fish, specially oily ones, at least twice a week. And: minimize back the meat. Colorectal cancer is now in the prime 3 probably lethal illnesses in the wealthy world, and it is proved that vegetarians and men and women who eat significantly less red and processed meat are somewhat significantly less very likely to develop it.

So what are we left with? The only ungainsayable dietary recommendations are simple to the stage of gnomic. Professor David Colquhoun, an eminent toxicologist and scourge of negative science, also at UCL, as soon as advised me: “No dietary science other than ‘eat less’ has ever altered my eating habits.” Fundamentalist foodies like to quote Michael Pollan, the American guru of “actual foods”, whose most popular prescription is practically a haiku: “Eat meals. Not too significantly. Mostly plants.” (He also explained “Never eat anything at all your grandmother wouldn’t recognise as meals”, which is beguilingly simple, although my Scottish grandmother was happily cognisant of Irn-Bru and Cheesy Wotsits, tastes that I inherited.)

Sensible saws this kind of as these aren’t going to have much play with the NHS or the foods industry. You can’t promote ready-meals with them. All the same, here’s mine: don’t consume crap. 3 instances a day. And consider to cook some thing each day that makes you and those you love content.
