SUNDAY, May 24, 2015 (HealthDay News) — Summer is fast approaching, along with its usual bonanza of bugs. Fortunately, most of those inevitable bites and stings aren’t serious. But, experts from the American Academy of Dermatology advise going to the emergency room right away if you notice any of the following symptoms soon after a bug bite or sting:

  • Difficulty breathing,

  • The feeling that your throat is closing,

  • Swelling of lips, tongue or face,

  • Chest pain,

  • A racing heartbeat for more than a few minutes,

  • Dizziness or headache,

  • Vomiting.

Also beware of a red rash that looks like a donut or bullseye target after a tick bite, or a fever with a spreading red or black spotty rash. These can be signs of serious tick-related illness.

“Although most bug bites and stings do not turn into a severe or even fatal illness like Rocky Mountain spotted fever, it’s important to pay attention to your symptoms,” Dr. Margaret Parsons, an associate clinical professor of dermatology at the University of California, Davis, said in an academy news release. Parsons added that if you feel tired all the time, have a headache, fever or body aches, or you develop a rash after a bug bite, see your doctor. However, home care is fine for most bites and stings, according to Parsons. In general, bites and stings “can be safely treated at home with topical medication, such as hydrocortisone cream or ointment, or an oral antihistamine to reduce the itch,” said Parsons.More information The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers more on preventing bites and stings.

Do you normally down burgers, steaks, and other types of red meat and feel just fine when the meal’s over? Take note if you break out in hives, experience swelling and itching, or get symptoms like vomiting or diarrhea four to six hours after consuming the stuff: Doctors are beginning to report allergic reactions—even anaphylactic shock—in patients who’ve recently eaten beef, pork, or lamb, even if they’d never had reactions in the past. The reason? A bite from a kind of tick called the Lone Star could be to blame. While the Lone Star tick was once mainly prevalent in the Southwest (like in Texas, the Lone Star state), it’s been appearing along the Eastern Seaboard in states like North Carolina, Virginia, and all the way up into Maine, according to the Associated Press. With it, doctors have been seeing bizarre cases of this red-meat allergy in numbers going into the thousands, ScienceDaily reports.RELATED: Beat 16 Summer Health Hazards The Lone Star tick carries in its gut a sugar called alpha-gal—a sugar that’s also found in meat. Experts believe that when a Lone Star tick bites someone, their immune system treats the sugar as an invader and makes antibodies. The next time that person eats red meat, they could have a serious allergic reaction. Doctors at Vanderbilt University Medical Center say there isn’t a good way to treat or reverse this allergy, but so-called alpha-gal patients can safely eat poultry like chicken and turkey. How to protect yourself: Follow proper tick-prevention behavior when you’re out in the woods, especially in the parts of the U.S. mentioned above—i.e. wear long pants and sleeves, and check for bites post-exposure.RELATED: Treat and Defend Against Bug Bites And if you notice any strange allergy symptoms after eating your next roast beef sandwich, hit the ER, pronto.Camille Chatterjee is the Deputy Editor of Health.

Camel Spider Bite Symptoms And Treatment Guide

WHAT DOES A CAMEL SPIDER LOOK LIKE?

You will be amazed to know that camel spider, as the name suggests in not a spider at all. It is an arachnid in the order Solifugae which means “those who run away from the sun”. This large, brown, hairy and fierce spider like animal is very dangerous and is also well known by the names- Jerrymugium, Sun Spider, Sand Spider, Sun Scorpion and the Wind Spider.

The length of this creature is not fixed and varies across species, ranging from 0.5 inches up to 6 inches. Its abdomen is divided into segments and long hair that shines in the sun covers its long legs. The most striking and dangerous part of this spider’s body is its sharp plier like jaws which are used to crush and chew their prey.

WHERE CAN CAMEL SPIDERS BE FOUND?

Camel spiders are usually found in deserts around the world.  They are averse from sunlight and during the day time, hide themselves under the rocks or bury themselves in the soil or sand to protect their body from the day time heat. Camel spiders are night creatures and are active after dusk.

CAMEL SPIDER BITE SYMPTOMS

A camel spider attacks a human only if it feels threatened. Its bite is not poisonous and normally leaves a severely fierce looking wound at the area of the bite. If you are sure that you have been bitten by a camel spider, then you must have one or more camel spider bite symptoms mentioned below:

Acute pain

A camel spider bite results in severe stinging pain due to the creature’s jaws which look like a crab’s pincers.

Swelling and Redness

Trauma to the surrounding tissues results in inflammation and redness of the skin surrounding the wound. This inflammation is a normal response of the human body to the spider’s bite.

Bleeding

Depending on the severity of the bite, extent of attack, size of the spider and area of the body that has been attacked, mild to profuse bleeding may occur.

In some cases, camel spider bite symptoms become worse due to other underlying medical conditions or allergic reactions. It is better to visit a doctor immediately in such cases as immediate medical attention will be required.

CAMEL SPIDER BITE TREATMENT

Since camel spider bites are non-venomous in nature, it can be treated at home without immediate medical intervention from the doctors. In case the affected person has other medical conditions like diabetes, blood pressure, thyroid or allergies, then it is best to consult a doctor and seek medical treatment to avoid infection.

The below treatment or first aid steps can be followed immediately after a camel spider bite:

  • The very first and most important step is sanitizing the wounded area. Wash it with mild soap, saline solution or an anti- bacterial disinfectant.

  • Once the wound is thoroughly cleaned, dry it so that no water is left.

  • Carefully apply an antibiotic cream and leave the wound for ten to fifteen minutes.

  • Once the cream begins to dry, cover the area of the bite with a band aid or bandage. Avoid placing cotton as it will stick to the cream covering the wound and can result in infection.

  • Once the bandage is on, ensure that you change it regularly to avoid staph and other bacterial infections. In case you develop symptoms like vomiting and fever after few days, rush to a doctor and seek medical treatment to treat the infection which in some cases can become life threatening.

  • To reduce inflammation and redness around the wound, you can apply ice packs and ice compressions ten minutes every day. It will numb the area around the wound and decrease pain and inflammation.

If you follow the mentioned steps carefully, your camel spider bite will completely heal in a couple of weeks. In case of other complications, your doctor may advice cleaning of the wound, scraping off the area of the bite, tetanus injections and strong antibiotic course for a few weeks.

Why Some Athletes Bite: Luis Suarez Takes Center Stage

As word spread about Uruguay’s Luis Suarez biting the shoulder of Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini yesterday for the duration of a Planet Cup match, supporters have been surely caught off guard.  However, as shocking and disgusting as this behavior was, this became the third episode in four years that Suarez has been accused of biting one more athlete.

Biting in sports activities is certainly not common–we can don’t forget Mike Tyson biting off a chunk of Evander Holyfeld’s ear in 1997–but it reminds us of the animalistic actions that sports activities competition can ilicit in specific men and women who are susceptible to aggression.

Whilst most achieved and elite athletes have the capability to management their emotions in frustrating situations and practice impulse handle, some athletes unfortunately resort to such actions in these substantial-pressure, large-stakes competitions.

Harnessing sheer anger and disappointment in a constructive way is how most athletes can carry their game to a new level.  Intense, substantial level competitions this kind of as the Planet Cup and other sporting occasions that convene periodically such as the Olympics create this kind of heights of emotional anxiety that people athletes who are susceptible to aggression-this kind of as Suarez-plainly have problems channeling their anger in this kind of conditions.

Eventually, humans biting other people reminds us of our ancestral connection with primates–and how though evolution and improvement of organized cultures and societal norms–such behavior became unacceptable.

Health-related Implications of Human Bites

Our mouths are host to almost 200 species of bacteria, and so the concern for building a bacterial infection right after a bite is a genuine concern.  Staphylococcus and Streptococcus are commonly accountable for infections as properly as other so-called anaerobic bacteria which thrive in reduced oxygen problems.  A notably concerning anerobic bacteria in human bites is Eikenella corrodens, which can lead to persistent infection as effectively as abscesses. The significance of thorough wound cleaning, irrigation and debridement is critical to prevent a wound infection. Tetanus immunization need to be up to date as properly.

If the obvious bite is much more consistent with an abrasion–with no violation of the epidermis or any broken skin—prophylactic antibiotics are not vital assuming the damage does not involve the joints, hands or feet or any  framework containing cartilage.  (the ear). Regional Local wound care with a lot of soap and warm water and  antibacterial ointment will suffice.

Specific types of bites are higher risk and prophylactic antibiotics are recommended. These contain bites to the hand as well as those that break by means of the superficial layer of skin–known as the epidermis– along with bites that involve joints and structures which contain cartilage.   All Bites to the hand are at large chance for infection and ought to be offered antibiotic prophylaxis. The importance of neighborhood wound care in these circumstances is paramount and a health-related expert must be consulted in these situations.

It is possible to transmit both Hepatitis B and C, as well as Syphilis and TB via human bites.  In uncommon cases, it is also attainable to transmit tetanus as nicely.   And, even though it is not frequent, studies and situation reviews have documented transmission of HIV by means of human bites.

Although the HIV virus is contained in the saliva of these impacted by the disease, it is existing at significantly decrease amounts in contrast to the blood stream.  In addition, there are actually distinct inhibitors in the saliva that make the virus non-transmissible or ineffective in the majority of situations. Therefore, the danger of transmission of HIV by means of human bites is really low.

Vicious mosquito heads to Australia, its bite loaded with dengue fever

Australia is getting ready for an invasion by an aggressive and exotic pest that threatens to spread dengue fever to southern capitals.

Queensland scientists have begun breeding the Asian tiger mosquito, a hugely invasive species which is in a position to bite dozens of instances a minute.

They are closely learning the country’s only colony of the insect, caged behind a series of locked doors in Brisbane’s QIMR Berghofer Health-related Research Institute.

Associate professor Greg Devine says the analysis is vital provided the mosquito’s prospective to introduce the debilitating chikungunya virus and spread conditions such as dengue to capital cities.

“What we’d like to realize is the genuine risk of transmission in urban centres like Brisbane and Sydney,” he stated.

“We are also hunting at the way it would interact with native mosquitoes so we can determine how quick its affect will be.”

But its best effect will be on Australia’s outdoor lifestyle because it thrives in and close to residences and bites all day.

“It’s come to be known as the barbecue stopper, and for very good reason,” Devine mentioned.

The large and aggressive mosquito is capable of spreading several illnesses, such as Ross River virus, yellow fever and chikungunya.

There is no therapy for the Chikungunya virus, typical in south-east Asia, which can depart sufferers with extreme joint ache for months.

When the Asian tiger mosquito will invade Australia is not recognized but Devine stated it would be a case of when, not if.

“It’s absolutely only a matter of time,” he said.

“It arrived in the Torres Strait about 2005, but of program that’s not the only route at which it can come in.

“There is no doubt it is coming eventually simply because it’s been picked up so many occasions at Australia’s borders.”

MPs, support the care bill and it will come back to bite you | Polly Toynbee

Millwall players in t-shirts supporting Lewisham hospital

Millwall gamers support Lewisham hospital: ‘Lewisham hospital was fine, financially and clinically, but when the South London Healthcare Trust went bankrupt, partly due to a PFI, its administrator tried to kidnap Lewisham’s A&ampE and maternity services.’ Photograph: Tom Jenkins

A panic measure in the Commons these days faces a cross-celebration rebellion. When MPs debate clause 119, hastily tacked on to the care bill, Labour will be joined by a bunch of Lib Dems and possibly some Tories searching for to strike it out. The clause lets trust specific administrators (TSAs) shut down any hospital or A&ampE at forty days’ observe – with no meaningful consultation to cease objections until it truly is all more than.

Every MP need to consider cautiously how they vote nowadays as this may possibly come back and bite them tough in their own backyard. If a hospital is in economic difficulties, clause 119 offers a TSA special administrative powers not just to near, merge or alter the troubled hospital – astonishingly, it provides a TSA the power to cannibalise any other thriving hospital to seize lucrative solutions to plug the funds gap, irrespective of nearby social and overall health effects. Unsuspecting MPs who consider their personal hospital is financially hunky dory must watch out: clause 119 lets an administrator grab juicy slices to repair a distant bankruptcy.

Wellness secretary Jeremy Hunt was thwarted in his try to do that in Lewisham, so this new clause provides him the power. Lewisham hospital was fine, financially and clinically, but when the South London healthcare believe in went bankrupt, partly due to a PFI, its administrator attempted to kidnap Lewisham’s A&ampE and maternity companies. The protest from Lewisham’s medical professionals, public and mayor led to the court of appeal rejecting the prepare. Clause 119 is Hunt’s retaliation, enabling future administrators to seize a total area’s solutions. Even the local clinical commissioning groups will have no say more than the fate of companies they commission: so considerably for placing GPs in manage.

Never envision this extreme electrical power is just for a couple of basket-instances. The monetary crisis now gripping the NHS reveals the alarming quantity of trusts with soaring debts. Half the acute trusts below the Trust Advancement Authority are in problems, alongside 39 of the 100 basis trusts. Labour these days lists 32 trusts forecasting the worst deficits, which MPs need to study meticulously: a TSA may possibly lean across the border and grab a chunk from a healthful service to plug a gap elsewhere. When that occurs and there is an outcry, you can bet angry regional campaigners will ask their MP how they voted today. Did they vote for these draconian powers? If so, they’ll feel the heat when neighborhood objectors find the 40-day axe falls ahead of they can paint a ”Conserve our A&ampE” banner.

Hunt wants this power to patch up erupting crises in NHS finances. Can he quit outbreaks prior to the election? He is been fortunate with the climate – no flu, no norovirus – and lucky that NHS workers and managers strive to do the nearly impossible. If his party wins, his reward will be an escape from the department before the entire edifice crashes in.

By no means has the NHS been beneath this kind of strain, says the King’s Fund, although the Institute for Fiscal Scientific studies says, when adjusted for age, the NHS is getting reduce by 9% among 2010 and 2019. Struggling five years of annual 4% “efficiency saving” cuts, with the same for another five many years to come, it has a £30bn funding gap.

Do please go through these numbers: the better care fund sliced off one more £2bn for nearby authorities to fill the care gap triggered by council cuts. Public overall health income was diverted to councils but, not ringfenced, some slid elsewhere. Everybody calls for neighborhood care, but Age Uk says 800,000 fewer people get any council care. Nor can GPs fill the gap, their funding reduce by a fifth in 9 many years, even though NHS England admits a want for 16,000 much more GPs. In hospitals the “tariff deflator” shrinks fee each 12 months: the mental health trusts’ costs are cut by a further 20% – so neglect its promised “parity of esteem”. Then include in a 23% child boom in maternity units. Meanwhile, PFIs from Labour’s era drag down some hospitals.

Now put the NHS in the stress-cooker right after the Francis report on Mid Staffs rightly raised the bar on quality. The bullying culture that commences with Hunt calling round to frighten hospitals breaching waiting occasions sends threats thundering down the ranks. Fifty Care High quality Commission inspectors arrive in coaches to grill hospitals, inspectors themselves terrified of missing negative care and taking the blame of the outdated CQC regime.

A couple of weeks in the past, Hunt proudly showed me his noticeboard listing every single “never ever event”: I asked in which was the other board listing “brilliant events”? But his political game is blaming every person else by what he calls “lifting the bonnet” on negative care, so stories of blunders distract from the monetary crisis. Cameron’s eye-catchers for party conference promised seven-day hospitals and seven-day 8am-8pm GP hours – but with no cash or prepare. In actual-globe A&ampEs – most dropping money – more than 5,000 people a week wait on trolleys for among 4 and twelve hrs. How does it help to impose a fine of £1,000 for each patient waiting an hour more than target? David Flory, head of the Believe in Improvement Agency, just lately told the King’s Fund of his alarming difficulty in recruiting CEOs and finance directors. As well handful of are willing in this climate of blame to get on “jobs people utilised to queue round the block for”.

After the Lewisham debacle, the unique administrator concerned says he necessary these new draconian powers when he identified himself “on a burning platform”, in which the bankrupt trust was haemorrhaging funds by the week. Which is a beneficial image for significantly of the NHS, worsening yr by year. Of course, some parts of the NHS are greater run than other people, but debts fluctuate for myriad, complicated causes.

A duty of candour is additional to the care bill, obliging hospitals to reveal anything that goes wrong to add to Hunt’s shame lists. What is not added is Robert Francis’s recommendation in his report that all experts and managers talk out candidly when money can not cover safe care: “To pretend an acceptable degree of services can be delivered when it is not achievable to do so is to deceive individuals and the public.” When beneath-resourced, “all experts concerned require to make their voice on behalf of patients heard loud and clear”. Hunt needs a duty of candour to the public about NHS funding.

Nothing at all can ever be set in aspic. NHS solutions often need to have updating. But the cure for the funds crisis is not haphazard hatcheting of companies with no time for examining proof, consulting commissioners or the public. MPs must believe carefully what could befall them if they vote for this today, only to locate the axe fall arbitrarily on their own apparently thriving hospitals.

• Comments on this report will be launched later this morning (United kingdom time)
