Cancer symptoms often missed by GPs in England, study suggests

Thousands of people diagnosed with cancer in A&E every year have visited their GP three times or more with symptoms, research has shown.

The study found that 71% of all patients diagnosed in accident and emergency departments had seen their GP at least once with symptoms that turned out to be cancer. The remainder had never visited their GP.

Of the group that did see their GP with symptoms, 41% had sought help three or more times while 59% had seen their GP once or twice.

Some of these had difficult-to-spot cancers, such as lung cancer or multiple myeloma, and tended to be younger or female.

But the group also included people with common cancers such as breast cancer. The study found that 31% of patients with breast cancer had visited their GP three or more times, 41% with bowel cancer had visited three or more times, and 37% with prostate cancer had visited three or more times.

People who are diagnosed with cancer as an emergency have a worse prognosis than those diagnosed at an earlier stage. The quicker a cancer patient can get a diagnosis, the better their options for treatment.

The study, said to be the most comprehensive to date, was published in the British Journal of General Practice. The authors, including from University College London, the University of Cambridge and Public Health England, analysed 2010 data from 4,637 people diagnosed in A&E.

They found those patients who had never been to their GP tended to be older, male and living in the most deprived regions of England.

Patients in A&E diagnosed with common cancers who had visited their GP three times or more may be presenting with atypical symptoms, the authors said.

A previous study, including by three of the same authors, found those patients who saw a GP three or more times before being referred for cancer tests were more likely to be dissatisfied with their overall care.

They also have less confidence in the doctors and nurses who go on to treat them, that study found.

Dr Georgios Lyratzopoulos, one of the lead researchers based at UCL, said: “These findings tell us that some patients diagnosed as an emergency might not be acting on ‘red flag’ symptoms which could have prompted them to visit their GP.

“There’s also a host of other factors that may be at play. For example, many elderly patients may find it difficult to get to the surgery or have other conditions which would prevent them from seeking an appointment, such as dementia.

“This highlights the need to explore all the reasons why cancers are diagnosed late, including what happens outside GP surgeries.

“It also shows that late diagnosis is more complex than it’s often presented to be, as there are multiple reasons why cancers are spotted late.”

Dr Julie Sharp of Cancer Research UK said: “Campaigns like Be Clear on Cancer have boosted the public’s awareness of cancer signs and symptoms. But this study shows that there are multiple reasons that affect how and when a cancer diagnosis is made.

“We need to continue to increase awareness of cancer signs and symptoms and help break down the barriers preventing people from seeing their GP earlier. GPs need better access to the right tests and referral routes if we want to see this number reduced.”

Judith Brodie, acting chief executive of the charity Beating Bowel Cancer, said: “It’s concerning that the study shows 41% of bowel cancer patients who are diagnosed as emergencies had previously sought help from their GP three or more times.

“A bowel cancer patient’s chance of being successfully treated drops dramatically if they are not diagnosed until a late stage so more must be done to ensure that the public is aware of the symptoms and how important it is to get them checked out as soon as possible.

“Knowledge of the disease will also give them the confidence to persevere with their GP if they feel their symptoms are not being taken seriously enough.”

How to Hide All Your Annoying Allergy Symptoms With Makeup

This article originally appeared on InStyle.com.

April showers bring May flowers… and for some of us, that also means we get red, stuffy noses and puffy, watery eyes on the side. Spring, as beautiful and fresh as it may be, is also the beginning of allergy season and the annoying symptoms that can make you look even more tired than how you feel. But thanks to the power of makeup, you can hide that you’re a sufferer of pollen or whatever else is out in the atmosphere altogether.

Combat Redness

Whether it’s around your nose or settling in on your cheeks, allergy redness is usually far more visible than a subtle healthy flush. So how to take it down? You’ll want to make some swaps in your cleansing routine. If you use makeup-removing wipes, Zyrtec Celebrity Makeup Artist Jamie Greenberg suggests opting for formulas that specifically state they’re make for sensitive skin so they don’t further irritate. Simple Micellar Makeup Removing Wipes ($ 6; target.com) are perfect for this circumstance. She also suggests taking off makeup with micellar water and cotton puffs.

Another tip? You can take down redness with a cooling mask and then counteract it with a green color-correcting concealer or a full coverage foundation. Try Urban Decay Naked Skin Color Correcting Fluid ($ 28; sephora.com) or Kat Von D Lock It Foundation ($ 36; sephora.com).

RELATED: How to Stop Allergies at Home

Deflate Puffy Eyes

“I love putting eye masks in the fridge before using them,” says Greenberg. “This adds a cooling effect and really helps with de-puffing! I find green tea and Arnica products work well to de-puff, too.”

Try Sephora Collection’s Green Tea Eye Mask ($ 5; sephora.com), or simply put tea bags in the fridge.

After that, Greenberg says to reach for a soft, easy-to-blend concealer like NARS Creamy Concealer ($ 13; sephora.com) to further hide the puffiness.

Open Up Your Eyes

You can also draw attention away from your puffy eyes by focusing on filling or defining the brows. Greenberg did this in two out of the three allergy-friendly looks she created for the app, BeGlammed.com.

You can also make your eyes seem more open by curling your lashes and applying black mascara to the upper and lower lashes. “I love Lancome Definicils Waterproof ($ 28; sephora.com) for mascara. If you want, you can coat the lashes with regular mascara, let it dry, and then apply the waterproof as a second coat to hold everything in! Tarte has a waterproof concealer ($ 23; sephora.com) that’s really nice, too!”

Sleep Disorders: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatments

Sleep is a vital part of our physical and mental well-being but unfortunately, thousands of people suffer from a variety of sleep disorders.  Some can be very mild and barely noticed by the effected person such as snoring or grinding of the teeth while asleep.  Others can be much more severe and even dangerous such as the type of sleep disorders that interfere with breathing or that cause a person to fall asleep at random times beyond their control.

Symptoms:

Disorder sleep symptoms can range from small, minor symptoms to much more severe and troublesome.  Here is a list of some of the more common sleep disorders and their symptoms.

Restless Leg Syndrome: As the name suggests this disorder is characterized by involuntary jerky leg movements that can make falling asleep difficult.

Bruxism: This disorder involves a clenching of the jaw or grinding your teeth while you are asleep and is often not noticed by the person suffering from the disorder

Sleepwalking: Perhaps one of the most well-known sleep disorders, this disorder sleep symptom involves walking or performing other routine activities such as getting dressed or making breakfast while in a sleep state.  Again, the sleepwalker is unaware of their actions.

Narcolepsy: One of the more serious and dangerous of the sleep disorders; those who suffer from Narcolepsy may fall asleep while performing regular activities such as talking or driving.  It is characterized by an uncontrollable urge to sleep regardless of how much rest you may have gotten the night before.

Insomnia: Restlessness or an inability to fall asleep.  This can be mild and occasional or severe and reoccurring.

Sleep Apnea:  This is one of the other more worrisome of the sleep disorders.  This disorder’s sleep symptom can be somewhat frightening since it involves a pause or a stop in breathing while asleep.

These are but just a handful of the some of the more widely known sleep disorders; however, there are dozens of others that you may want to learn about.

Causes:

Sleep disorders stem from a variety of causes including physical pain such as back pain, pain from a recent injury, neck pain, and headaches.  Stress and anxiety can also be leading causes of sleep disorders.  Hormonal changes due to pregnancy, the onset of menopause, or menstruation can also be factors that interfere with normal sleep.  The side effects of various medications can lead to sleep disorders as can some medical conditions such as sciatica and endocrine imbalances.  Environmental noise and distractions can also be culprits in stealing your sleep.

Treatments:

Sleep disorders have a variety of treatments from using aromatherapy oils blended to aid sleep, for example by using one of the sleep mists that you can spray your linens with before you go to bed to help you relax.  A variety of herbal remedies using chamomile and other herbs can be effective.  When stress and anxiety are causing the disorder’s sleep symptom, learning relaxation and stress management techniques can often have a great effect on your ability to get much needed sleep.  Some disorders are more severe and may require medication and treatment by a physician.  So if you feel that you are suffering from a sleep disorder and one of the standard remedies do not seem to help, consult your healthcare provider.

Symptoms of Hormone Imbalance in Women

Symptoms of hormone imbalance in women may begin as early as the late twenties to the forties. Symptoms of hormone imbalance in women tend to increase as a woman ages, especially if ignored in the earlier years. Hormone imbalance symptoms can be any one or more of the following (1,2):

  • Allergy symptoms

  • Depression, fatigue, and anxiety

  • Endometriosis

  • Fibrocystic breasts

  • Hair loss and facial hair growth

  • Headaches, dizziness, and foggy thinking

  • Low sex drive

  • Osteoporosis

  • PMS

  • Urinary tract infections and incontinence

  • Uterine fibroids

  • Weight gain, water retention and bloating

  • Wrinkly skin

Symptoms of hormone imbalance are caused primarily by the incorrect relationship between progesterone and estrogen levels in the body. The two female hormones, estrogen and progesterone, exist in a delicate balance. Variations in that balance can have a dramatic effect on your health, resulting in symptoms of hormone imbalance. The amounts of these hormones that the woman’s body produces from month to month can vary, depending on factors such as stress, nutrition, exercise and most importantly – ovulation or the lack of ovulation (3).

In the first 10-12 days of the menstrual cycle, only estrogen is produced in the female body. If ovulation occurs, then progesterone is produced by the ovaries. On day 28 or so, levels of both hormones drop, resulting in menstruation. However, if ovulation did not occur, you can still have the menstrual period, but the estrogen is never “balanced” by progesterone, which needed ovulation to trigger its production. And this results in symptoms of hormone imbalance appearing – you have estrogen but progesterone production drops to very low levels.

In the industrialized countries, women take birth control pills, are exposed to household chemicals at home, car exhaust and other environmental xenoestrogens. In addition, women often have stressful lives, eat processed foods or skip meals, take synthetic estrogen HRT (hormone replacement therapy) and have hysterectomies. All these factors can add more estrogen to the female body, resulting in excess estrogen which will cause hormone imbalance symptoms.

What Are the Symptoms of Mesothelioma?

Sometimes, symptoms of mesothelioma can be confused with the symptoms of other diseases.

In most cases, symptoms of mesothelioma develop decades after the initial exposure to asbestos. Many of the early symptoms are unclear and mirror many other types of lung diseases. Therefore, people do not pay much attention to their symptoms, and doctors often ignore or misdiagnose them.

Crucial Things to know about mesothelioma symptoms

  • Diagnosis of mesothelioma is very troublesome based on symptoms alone, and in most cases, biopsy is needed.

  • Symptoms depend on the cell type and location of the tumor in the body.

  • If any of the persistent signs and symptoms seem unusual, the doctor should be asked to evaluate them. Also, the doctor should be notified about asbestos exposure.

Most Common Symptoms of Mesothelioma

  • Shortness of breath

  • Feeling pain or pressure in the chest and/or abdomen

  • Dry cough or wheezing

  • Hacking cough

  • Anemia

  • Persistent respiratory problems

  • Breathing difficulty

  • Fever

  • Slow immune response

  • Excruciating pain in the chest or abdomen

  • Weight loss without any reason

Common Symptoms by Types of Mesothelioma

Pleural Mesothelioma

  • Fatigue

  • Dry cough and wheezing

  • Chest pain

  • Shortness of breath

  • Hypoxemia (low oxygen level)

  • Pleural effusions

  • Dysphagia (difficulty swallowing)

  • Reduced chest expansion

  • Bloody cough or blood in sputum

  • Blood clotting disorders

Peritoneal Mesothelioma

  • Swelled abdomen or distension

  • Constipation

  • Bowel obstruction

  • Nausea

  • Anorexia (loss of appetite)

  • Painful or sensitive abdomen

  • Fatigue

  • Anemia

  • Weight loss

Pericardial Mesothelioma Common Symptoms

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Coughing

  • Chest pains

  • Fever/night sweats

  • Irregular heartbeat or heart palpitations

Symptoms for other forms of mesothelioma

Signs and symptoms of other forms of mesothelioma are not clear due to their rarity.

Pericardial mesothelioma affects tissue surrounding the heart. The signs and symptoms are chest pains and breathing difficulty.

Mesothelioma of tunica vaginalis this type of mesothelioma affects tissue that surrounds the testicles. Patient may feel fatigue and feel swelling or a wad on testicle.

Stages of mesothelioma symptoms

As mesothelioma spreads throughout the body, localized symptoms can transform into separate effects throughout the body. Often these symptoms will be felt locally according to where it has spread and to what extent.

Possible symptoms that mesothelioma has spread include:

  • Low blood sugar also known as hypoglycemia

  • Laryngeal nerve palsy, which results in a hoarse throat

  • Difficulty swallowing

  • Damage to facial nerves, known as Horner’s syndrome

  • Unusual nerve signals in arms

  • Blood flow obstruction in the upper torso, known as Superior Vena Cava Syndrome

How Long Do Mesothelioma Symptoms Take to Emerge?

On average, a male victim of asbestos exposure can experience initial symptoms of mesothelioma within 47.9 years, and for an average female victim, its 53.3 years.

How Can Mesothelioma Symptoms Go Undetected

To some doctors, mesothelioma symptoms may seem mild. Minor symptoms such as fever, cough, or loss of appetite can be attributed to pneumonia, bronchial infections, common cold or COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease).

Doctors typically start to fit the pieces together if the symptoms intensify or show strange patterns. Extensive screening is required to detect cancers. Therefore, it can take several months to diagnose it even if the possibility of cancer is suspected.

Type of cancer known as pericardial mesothelioma is so rare that it may only be diagnosed after the patient dead and an autopsy is performed.

Therefore, any possible symptom of mesothelioma should be treated seriously by the patient and the doctor. The symptoms described above should be investigated by a physician and consider cancer as a possibility even if the chances seem low.

If you or a family member has come into contact with asbestos and are experiencing the symptoms mentioned above, contact your doctor immediately. If a person is diagnosed with mesothelioma, he or she may be entitled to compensation for losses and damages to health.

Fracking Linked to Migraine Headaches, Severe Fatigue, Chronic Sinus and Nasal Symptoms, Study Finds

Fracking has expanded — outpacing scientific understanding of its potential health risks and impacts.  Nevertheless, there’s a lack of studies relating to health outcomes for people living in close proximity of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking well sites.

John Hopkins researchers recently initiated a study to find out more about the impact of fracking on human health.  As a result, their research adds to the growing evidence of a link between fracking and health problems.

Fracking Industry Linked to Health Problems

Hydraulic fracturing involves injecting millions of liters of water into deep rock formations to free up natural gas or petroleum. Energy companies moved toward fracking in the early 2000s when natural gas prices were high and supplies were low.

In addition, hydraulic fracturing represents an increasing share of energy production worldwide. Currently, shale gas extraction equate to 40 percent of U.S. domestic natural gas production.

According to John Hopkins researchers, unconventional natural gas development — like fracking — produces environmental contaminants and psychosocial stressors.  Even so, a rapid increase in fracking has occurred in Pennsylvania.  More than 8,800 fracking wells have been drilled in Pennsylvania in the past ten years.

In recent years, fracking has expanded rapidly in other states, as well — including Ohio, Wyoming, North Dakota, Colorado, and West Virginia.

A team of researchers from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health initiated a study to look further into the impact of fracking on Pennsylvania residents’ health.  Their findings suggest that Pennsylvania residents with the highest exposure to active natural gas are almost twice as likely to suffer from a combination of health problems.  These health problems include: severe fatigue, migraine headaches, and chronic sinus and nasal symptoms.

The study’s first author, Aaron W. Tustin, a resident physician in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at the Bloomberg School, comments on their findings.

“These three health conditions can have debilitating impacts on people’s lives.  In addition, they cost the health care system a lot of money. Our data suggest these symptoms are associated with proximity to the fracking industry.”

Study Results

In this study, Tustin and his colleagues created a questionnaire and received responses from 7,785 adult primary care patients of the Geisinger Health System.  Geisinger Health System is a health care provider that covers 40 counties in north and central Pennsylvania.

Between April and October 2014, participants returned the questionnaires to the researchers for analysis. The team of researchers found that 1,765 respondents suffered from migraines; 1,930 people experienced severe fatigue.  In addition, 1,850 had current symptoms of chronic rhinosinusitis — three or more months of nasal and sinus symptoms.

Health Conditions and Exposure to Wells

The researchers used publicly available well data to estimate the study participants’ exposure to the fracking industry. Their models accounted for the size and number of wells, as well as the distance between wells and people’s homes.

No single health condition was associated with proximity to active wells.  However, participants who met criteria for two or more of the health conditions were about twice as likely to live closer to more, or larger wells.

Previous research conducted by the study’s senior author, Brian S. Schwartz, a professor in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at the Bloomberg School, has linked the fracking industry to increases in indoor radon concentrations, asthma attacks, and premature births.

Schwartz notes the need for more research and protection.

“We don’t know specifically why people in close proximity to these larger wells are more likely to be sick.  We need to find a way to better understand the correlation and, hopefully, do something to protect the health of these people.”

This study titled, “Associations between Unconventional Natural Gas Development and Nasal and Sinus, Migraine Headache, and Fatigue Symptoms in Pennsylvania,” is in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives.

Alzheimer’s Patient Reverses Symptoms by Applying Coconut Oil On A Daily Basis

Carolyn, the devoted daughter of an 88-year-old women who has Alzheimer’s recently decided to take charge of her mother’s care. The almost immediate results she saw were drastic and inspiring.

Additionally, the simple change she implemented in her mom’s life is available for any family struggling and suffering from Alzheimer’s to try for themselves.

Her mother spent the last seven years in a nursing home. As the years wore on and her mother’s condition deteriorated, Carolyn started to worry that her mother was being neglected and potentially abused.

Carolyn decided it was time to make a change and take matters into her own hands. She removed her ailing mother and devoted herself to being her mother’s full-time primary caregiver. On February 14, 2016, Carolyn made the hardest and probably the most important decision for her mother and removed her from the toxic nursing home environment and took her home to care for her.

While in the care of the nursing home, Carolyn’s mother was diagnosed with stage 6 Alzheimer’s. Stage 6 is also known as the “severe decline” stage. In stage 6 most patients need help with day-to-day life activities and near constant supervision. For the last two years, Carolyn’s mother struggled to speak and did not remember people, names, faces, and words. Reading had become almost impossible for her mom due to her memory issues. Communication was becoming a real struggle for Carolyn’s mother.

Coconut oil, the wonder drug

Carolyn had read about and was familiar with the benefits of coconut oil. Immediately after her mother’s liberation from the nursing home, Carolyn started liberally applying coconut oil. She would do this twice a day, after bathing in the morning and again at night before bedtime.

Within 5 days she started noticing an immediate and drastic improvement in her mother’s condition. Her mother started remembering people and names she hadn’t in years. She was able to communicate again. Carolyn was amazed when her mother was able to read, out loud, a Bible storybook and only struggled with a couple of words.

Alzheimers and coconut oil, science backs it up

These results may have been shocking, but they are no surprise given the results of a recent Spanish clinical trial. In December 2015, a clinical trial was published on the effects of coconut oil being used to treat patients who have Alzheimer’s.

The study included giving 40 ml, approximately 2.7 tablespoons, of coconut oil a day to one of two control groups. Both control groups were made up of people of varying ages and genders in various stages of Alzheimer’s. One control group received the coconut oil and the other did not.

The study concluded that there was a statistically significant increase in test scores demonstrating improved cognitive status in the control group that received the coconut oil. The study clearly demonstrated the potentially powerful positive effects of coconut oil on patients struggling with Alzheimer’s.

In addition, a US study currently being conducted in Florida is scheduled for publication in late 2016. The health, wellness, and Alzheimer’s communities are eagerly awaiting those results.

Big Pharma doesn’t welcome the idea

The pharmaceutical industry is the one industry that stands to lose the most if the new studies collaborate Spanish study findings. Alzheimer’s disease affects millions of seniors and is a rapidly increasing disease. Pharmaceutical companies have been working for years to develop a vaccine but to date have come up empty handed. Pharmaceutical companies may be left out in the cold if the connection between coconut oil and cognitive ability increase in Alzheimer patients is proven.

For Carolyn and her mother there is no doubt that coconut oil has made a huge impact in their daily lives. Carolyn and her mother are enjoying this additional time together, their newfound freedom, and their ability to communicate with one another.

Camel Spider Bite Symptoms And Treatment Guide

WHAT DOES A CAMEL SPIDER LOOK LIKE?

You will be amazed to know that camel spider, as the name suggests in not a spider at all. It is an arachnid in the order Solifugae which means “those who run away from the sun”. This large, brown, hairy and fierce spider like animal is very dangerous and is also well known by the names- Jerrymugium, Sun Spider, Sand Spider, Sun Scorpion and the Wind Spider.

The length of this creature is not fixed and varies across species, ranging from 0.5 inches up to 6 inches. Its abdomen is divided into segments and long hair that shines in the sun covers its long legs. The most striking and dangerous part of this spider’s body is its sharp plier like jaws which are used to crush and chew their prey.

WHERE CAN CAMEL SPIDERS BE FOUND?

Camel spiders are usually found in deserts around the world.  They are averse from sunlight and during the day time, hide themselves under the rocks or bury themselves in the soil or sand to protect their body from the day time heat. Camel spiders are night creatures and are active after dusk.

CAMEL SPIDER BITE SYMPTOMS

A camel spider attacks a human only if it feels threatened. Its bite is not poisonous and normally leaves a severely fierce looking wound at the area of the bite. If you are sure that you have been bitten by a camel spider, then you must have one or more camel spider bite symptoms mentioned below:

Acute pain

A camel spider bite results in severe stinging pain due to the creature’s jaws which look like a crab’s pincers.

Swelling and Redness

Trauma to the surrounding tissues results in inflammation and redness of the skin surrounding the wound. This inflammation is a normal response of the human body to the spider’s bite.

Bleeding

Depending on the severity of the bite, extent of attack, size of the spider and area of the body that has been attacked, mild to profuse bleeding may occur.

In some cases, camel spider bite symptoms become worse due to other underlying medical conditions or allergic reactions. It is better to visit a doctor immediately in such cases as immediate medical attention will be required.

CAMEL SPIDER BITE TREATMENT

Since camel spider bites are non-venomous in nature, it can be treated at home without immediate medical intervention from the doctors. In case the affected person has other medical conditions like diabetes, blood pressure, thyroid or allergies, then it is best to consult a doctor and seek medical treatment to avoid infection.

The below treatment or first aid steps can be followed immediately after a camel spider bite:

  • The very first and most important step is sanitizing the wounded area. Wash it with mild soap, saline solution or an anti- bacterial disinfectant.

  • Once the wound is thoroughly cleaned, dry it so that no water is left.

  • Carefully apply an antibiotic cream and leave the wound for ten to fifteen minutes.

  • Once the cream begins to dry, cover the area of the bite with a band aid or bandage. Avoid placing cotton as it will stick to the cream covering the wound and can result in infection.

  • Once the bandage is on, ensure that you change it regularly to avoid staph and other bacterial infections. In case you develop symptoms like vomiting and fever after few days, rush to a doctor and seek medical treatment to treat the infection which in some cases can become life threatening.

  • To reduce inflammation and redness around the wound, you can apply ice packs and ice compressions ten minutes every day. It will numb the area around the wound and decrease pain and inflammation.

If you follow the mentioned steps carefully, your camel spider bite will completely heal in a couple of weeks. In case of other complications, your doctor may advice cleaning of the wound, scraping off the area of the bite, tetanus injections and strong antibiotic course for a few weeks.

Concern over bowel cancer patients with symptoms year before diagnosis

A fifth of bowel cancer patients who received an emergency diagnosis in one year in England had characteristic symptoms the year before, suggesting their disease could have been caught earlier, researchers say.

With the majority of patients having seen a doctor in the 12 months before their diagnosis, whether emergency or non-emergency, the authors of the new study say multiple factors could be behind the finding.

“The sample [of patients] we have analysed come from more than 200 GP practices, so this suggests that it is not a problem of specific doctors, it suggests that it is a system-wide problem,” said Cristina Renzi, lead researcher of the study from University College London and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

“Emergency presentations are associated with worse patient-reported outcomes and disruptions to hospital services,” she added. “Cancer survival after an emergency colorectal cancer diagnosis is also substantially lower.”

With the study also showing that more than half of bowel cancer patients who receive an emergency diagnosis had no record of relevant symptoms up to a month beforehand, Renzi believes more needs to be done to support GPs, while patients should be encouraged to discuss all symptoms of concern with their doctor.

Writing in the British Journal of Cancer, the researchers, from four British universities, described how they analysed GP records and cancer registration data from more than 1,600 patients over the age of 25 who had been diagnosed with either colon or rectal cancer between 2005 and 2006.

While Renzi admits that the situation might have changed since the data was collected, the proportion of emergency diagnoses made for rectal cancers, she said, has remained fairly constant over the last decade, while those for colon cancers has dropped slightly.

Of the 1,029 colon cancer patients, 35% were diagnosed in an emergency situation, such as A&E or an emergency GP referral, compared to 15% of the 577 with rectal cancer. Emergency diagnoses were more common among women, those aged 80 or over and, for rectal cancer, those with a low socio-economic status.

When researchers examined up to five years of medical history for the colorectal cancer patients, whether diagnosed in an emergency situation or not, they discovered that more than 95% had seen a doctor in the previous 12 months. “In both cases it seems that they have been to their doctor multiple times and increasingly so the year before diagnosis,” said Renzi.

Those diagnosed in non-emergency situations were more likely to have symptoms typical of bowel cancer, including “red flag” symptoms such as rectal bleeding, anaemia or a change in bowel habits. But, the authors report, 18% of colon cancer patients and 23% of rectal cancer patients diagnosed in emergency situations also showed at least one red flag symptom in the 12 months before their diagnosis.

That, the authors said, suggests that around 20% of colorectal cancer patients could have been diagnosed earlier. That they were not, says Renzi, could be down to a number of factors.

“It might be that the doctor has referred them to have a diagnostic test and maybe the cancer progressed more rapidly; it might be that the patient had to come back and they didn’t,” said Renzi. “For now, we haven’t been able to really understand what went wrong after they were seen with the typical red flag symptoms.”

With many of those given an emergency diagnosis showing no red flag symptoms or other relevant signs, such as weight loss, Renzi said it was important that patients talk to their GP about all symptoms they are experiencing, while doctors need access to specialists and diagnostic facilities.

“The GPs need more support to deal with patients who present with non-specific symptoms in order to be able to diagnose cancer earlier, even in those cases,” she said.

Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) is a condition where the thyroid gland fails to create enough of thyroid hormone known as thyroxine. It is estimated that around 10 million Americans suffer from hypothyroidism, with it most often striking women. Hypothyroidism upsets the normal balance of chemical reactions in your body. For those that suffer from this condition, it can be extremely frustrating and difficult to deal with.

Thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located on the throat,  impacts every cell, tissue, and organ of your body. It regulates body temperature, manages weight loss, keeps our metabolism up.

Causes And Symptom’s

There can be a number of causes, including autoimmune disease, treatment for hyperthyroidism, radiation therapy, thyroid surgery and certain medications. The signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism vary, depending on the severity of the hormone deficiency.

Other causes linked to an underactive thyroid include iodine deficiencies, use of certain medications (lithium, corticosteroids, antihistamines, and anti-depressants), heavy metal exposure, food intolerances, and hormone imbalances.

Gluten-free foods can relieve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome | Letters

Arwa Mahdawi (My plea for gluten tolerance, 7 September) appears to be unaware that many people requesting gluten-free foods are suffering from food intolerances. Such sufferers do not have coeliac disease, which is an example of food hypersensitivity. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is such a condition that can be much relieved by the low-Fodmap (fermentable, oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols) diet as described by Monash University, based on the work of Dr Sue Shepherd and Dr Peter Gibson.

The research includes the group of poorly absorbed short-chain carbohydrates, which include lactose, fructose, polyols and fructans. Fructans include many wheat-based products. Therefore relief of IBS symptoms can be eased by trying gluten-free foods.

BPH (Enlarged Prostate) Causes, Symptoms And Treatments

The Facts
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) occurs when the prostate, which is ordinarily around the same size as a walnut and weighs about 30 to 50 grams, expands to twice or even three times its regular size.
As the name indicates, BPH is not indicative of serious diseases like cancer or other malignancies, though it can cause some discomforts as will be explained below.
Hyperplasia is the technical term for the nature of the growth itself, which in the case of BPH is caused either by an increased number of cells growing within the prostate, or by a reduction in the number of prostate cells that are dying off.
Another, similar condition is Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy, which shares common facets with BPH, but differs in that the hypertrophic growth is caused by the increased size of the cells themselves rather than a growth in their actual number.

How is BPH Caused?
There is no concrete evidence for any one cause of BPH, but medical sources are agreed that the condition is most likely linked to aging and the impact that the production of testosterone has on older men. Some studies have indicated that the body’s system for working off testosterone slows in middle age and the body’s reaction is to use this extra testosterone for the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is associated with prostate growth when it is present in large amounts. Family history and ethnicity should also be taken into account, with men of European ancestry at slightly increased risk of developing the condition, particularly those from southern Europe.
Still other studies have drawn a connection between BPH and lifestyle factors like high cholesterol, excessive weight, poor diet, and immoderate alcohol consumption.
Those with conditions such as diabetes, a lowered immune system, high blood pressure, metabolic syndrome, and atherosclerosis should also practice caution and remain vigilant for the development of BPH symptoms.

Symptoms to Watch Out For
The symptoms of BPH are varied and can occur in a range of varieties and combinations. Unfortunately each case of BPH is different and the symptoms can encompass levels from very mild to severe depending on the patient.
Most commonly, BPH will manifest itself with problems during and after urination. This is due to the enlarged prostate pressing down on the urinary tract and inhibiting the urine flow. Patients report needing to urinate more frequently, as well as a feeling that the bladder was not completely emptied on completion. Other symptoms include dribbling, and a decrease in the flow and weakening of the urine stream. Patients may also have to use more effort to begin urinating and then “push” with more force than was previously necessary. In some instances, blood will also appear in the urine, caused by the rupturing of blood vessels and small veins in the bladder as the patient strains.
In more severe cases, complications like urinary tract infections (UTI’s), bladder infections, and bladder stones may develop due to the bladder obstructions caused by BPH.
There is some evidence for a link between erectile dysfunction (ED) and BPH, although the consensus among medical professionals in this area is far from united on the topic. Studies have shown that some treatments for BPH could actually cause erectile dysfunction in the prescribed patient, and there are also some recorded cases where an ED medication has actually aided in reducing BPH.

Testing and Diagnosis
On presentation of symptoms, doctors will perform a thorough physical examination, in addition to consulting the patient of their medical and familial history. The patient’s lifestyle will also be taken into account with issues like mobility and diet being given particular precedence. The physical exam will most likely include a digital rectal examination, the simplest and most effective procedure for detecting abnormalities like BPH in the prostate, as well as in the early detection of prostate cancer.
Doctors will often order a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test to ascertain the level of antigens in the bloodstream, a higher rate of which results from growth in the size of the prostate, though the origin of these increased PSA’s is not always Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia.
Other tests that the doctor might order or carry out in surgery are the “long and strong” test, a precise analysis of the strength and flow of the urine stream; a filling cystometry, a measurement of the time it takes to fill the bladder; and an ultrasound or other imaging test. A cystoscopy, the visual inspection of the prostate through a thin lighted tube inserted into the urethra of the penis, is also used, though less often.
It should be noted that the symptoms of BPH, especially in its early stages, are very often so mild that the condition goes undetected until found during routine physical examinations – a further motivating factor in arranging regular medical check-ups, particularly for men over the age of 35.

Treatments
Medication – Alpha blockers are often prescribed for men who are undergoing a large amount of discomfort due to BPH. Essentially, these blockers help ease the urine flow by relaxing the bladder and the muscles of the prostate. Unfortunately, the side effects of these drugs can include headaches, nasal congestion, fatigue, and dizziness, and cases of retrograde ejaculation (where semen goes back into the bladder rather than through the urethra) have also been reported. A lowered libido and even erectile dysfunction have also been noted after patients after patients began a course of alpha blockers, though they are reasonably rare.

5-Alpha-Reductbase Inhibitors are another possibility, as they act to reduce the amount of DHT produced and so will, over the course of 5 or 6 months, reduce the size of the prostate by anywhere up to one fifth (20%). Unlike the alpha blockers, they will address the cause of discomfort over this period, but they will not reduce BPH symptoms in the short term. They are also known to reduce libido and sexual performance in some cases.

Surgery – Non-invasive surgeries such as a transurethral balloon dilation or a transurethral needle ablation have been shown to be very effective in the treatment of BPH, as has transurethral microwave thermotherapy. There is also a variety of laser treatments available.
More invasive procedures are the transurethral resection or incision of the prostate, or the transurethral vaporization of the prostate. In some cases the insertion of a stent may be necessary, or more rarely, the removal of the prostate itself.

Natural Prevention
It is therefore certainly best to try, in so far as possible, to prevent the onset of BPH by avoiding the less healthy lifestyle choices. Ketogenic / Paleo diet and a moderate amount of aerobic exercise (like walking and resistance training) will dramatically reduce the chances of developing BPH, along with improving quality of life overall.
Increasing intake of Ketogenic / Paleo friendly foods that are low in carbs, high in protein and healthy oily fats are great for the prostate and the body as a whole, and the knock on effect is that they elevate mood and the production of disease-fighting enzymes throughout the body. These could range from leafy greens like spinach, to avocados, macadamia nuts, and even grass-fed meats like beef, lamb, and venison. Reducing alcohol consumption and increasing the amount of prostate friendly green tea taken will also limit the chances of developing BPH, as will drinking more water through the day, but limiting intake close to bedtime.

A natural approach to prevention is always a more viable and safer alternative to pharmaceutical drugs  or invasive procedures with harmful side effects. So if you suffer from BPH symptoms or would like to prevent them, you deserve to know about the harmful side effects of drugs like Flomax. The diagnosis of cancer begins with a comprehensive healthcare background and a thorough bodily examination. Laboratory examine of urine, stool and blood can detect abnormalities that could lead to cancer indication. If a tumor is suspected, physicians use specific picture exams like CT (computed tomography), ultrasound, X-rays, MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) and Fiberoptic endoscopy to examine the area or dimension of cancer. For the confirmation of the diagnosis of cancer, biopsy is performed by taking the tissue sample from the suspected tumor and studying it underneath the microscope to check out the cancerous cells

What are the remedy possibilities obtainable for cancer?

One particular in five people who create cancer signs delay going to see their GP for at least three months, in accordance to new investigation which has renewed concern about the late diagnosis of cancer.

Specialists stated the amount of folks waiting 3 months was alarmingly large. Calls have been produced for public education campaigns to be stepped up to tackle ignorance about what the indications of cancer are.

Amid two,371 cancer sufferers surveyed in a examine published in the British Journal of Cancer, 35% waited at least three months before going to see their GP about bleeding from their anus, while 21% waited that lengthy soon after experiencing unexplained excess weight reduction, 17% soon after establishing a lump and 9% following discovering blood in their urine.

Babies and toddlers at twice risk of potentially fatal allergy symptoms

Allergies are an over-reaction of the immune program so if the physique is ‘primed’ by way of exposures to filth, bacteria and parasites then it is considered allergic reactions may possibly be significantly less likely. It is known that youngsters who expand up on farms are significantly less likely to have allergies than people brought up in cities with less publicity to animals and open land.

Diet plans reduced in fruit and vegetables and reduced vitamin and mineral content material in them might also play a part, it is imagined, as nicely as vaccines and antibiotics utilised in the manufacturing of meat but this is far more contentious.

In nearly a single in 5 individuals admitted to NHS hospitals in England since of an allergy last year it was due to a significant existence-threatening anaphylactic reaction.

The data incorporate individuals having allergic reactions to food, pollen, skin reactions and allergic asthma.

The figures, from the Wellness and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC), present that four,070 folks have been admitted simply because they were suffering an anaphylactic reaction – a 9.9 per cent rise on the prior twelve months.

Anaphylaxis is a serious, potentially lifestyle-threatening allergic reaction. Anaphylactic shock typically develops inside minutes of get in touch with with an allergen, this kind of as an insect sting, types of food like nuts or medicines.

HSCIC also mentioned that the number of people admitted for anaphylactic shock due to a response to meals has risen by 13.two per cent in a 12 months. Peanut allergy is 1 of the most widespread serious allergic reactions to meals.

NHS hospitals in England admitted twenty,318 patients for allergy symptoms in the 12 months to February 2014 – a 7.seven per cent rise on the preceding yr.

The admission rates were highest for young children aged beneath 4, with 58 ladies admitted per one hundred,000 and 96 boys admitted per 100,000 – this was twice the price for 60 to 65-yr-olds.

Across all ages there were 38 admissions for allergy symptoms per a hundred,000 men and women.

HSCIC chairman Kingsley Manning said: “The statistics we are publishing today provides fresh insight into hospital admissions for allergies, which have enhanced by nearly eight per cent in the final year.

“In the twelve months to February, 61.eight per cent of all allergy-related hospital admissions have been emergencies, a rise of just more than 6 per cent.

“This vital details on allergy admissions in England paints a clear picture for policy makers of the scale of hospital in patient care for these conditions.”

Lynne Regent, chief executive of the Anaphylaxis Campaign charity, explained: “Until now, figures on the level of burden on hospitals from serious allergy symptoms have been scarce and this new info highlights the need to have for further investment and enhancements in allergy care.”

A third of 1st-time mothers suffer depressive symptoms, research finds

Pregnant woman

1 in three first-time mothers suffers signs and symptoms of depression linked to their baby’s birth even though pregnant and/or throughout the initial four many years of the child’s life, in accordance to research.

And far more girls are depressed when their kid turns 4 than at any time before that, in accordance to the review, which difficulties the notion that mothers’ birth-connected psychological struggles normally occur at or following the baby’s arrival.

The findings have led to calls for all girls giving birth in the United kingdom to have their mental well being monitored right up until their kid turns 5 to ensure that much more of individuals experiencing problems are identified.

The outcomes are based mostly on research in Australia, but experts think that about the very same amount of ladies in the United kingdom knowledge bouts of psychological unwell-overall health connected with turning into a mom.

In all one,507 women from 6 hospitals in Melbourne, Australia, told researchers from the Murdoch children’s investigation institute and royal children’s hospital in Parkville, Victoria, about their knowledge of episodes of bad psychological overall health at typical intervals until finally their little one turned four.

The authors discovered that almost one in 3 very first-time mothers reported “depressive symptoms on at least one particular event from early pregnancy to four years postpartum [and that] the prevalence of depressive signs was highest at 4 many years postpartum”. The women’s depressive signs are usually short-lived episodes and do not indicate that the females had been diagnosed with postnatal depression. Studies in each the Uk and internationally have estimated that in between 10% and 15% of new mothers endure from that clinical issue.

The researchers also found that four years right after the child’s birth 14.5% display depressive signs, of whom forty% had not previously reported feeling really lower. At that time, girls with only 1 kid were significantly more likely (22.9%) than these with two or much more offspring (eleven.three%) to be depressed.

Dr Jim Bolton, a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and a advisor psychiatrist at a London hospital, mentioned that one particular in 3 ladies providing birth in the Uk were very likely to turn into depressed at some point during those first four many years. “If a comparable review was carried out right here, I would not be shocked if the outcomes were related. Normally the sorts of mothers who are at greater threat of depression are younger mothers who feel they cannot cope and mothers residing in conditions of adversity or deprivation or partner violence,” he explained.

“These findings are about depressive signs and symptoms, which can be very brief-lived, not a formal diagnosis of sickness or postnatal depression. This research is not saying that a single in 3 girls will get that,” stressed Bolton, who treats mental health issues in pregnancy and after birth amongst new mothers in his hospital’s women’s overall health unit.

The authors advocate that the United kingdom overhauls its monitoring of maternal mental wellness, which focuses on pregnancy and the early years right after birth, since much more than half the ladies who expertise depression right after getting to be a parent are not recognized by GPs, midwives or health guests.

A lot more girls could have postnatal depression than the normal estimate of ten%-15% partly because females may error the indications of it – which include getting far more irritable than normal or unusually tearful, inability to appreciate currently being a parent or worrying unduly about the baby’s well being – as getting things undergone by all new mothers.

Well being experts do not always spot it or inquire the right concerns to recognize it, although are far much more conscious of it than ever, Bolton extra.

One leading psychiatrist mentioned that the one in 3 girls who had depressive signs and symptoms was roughly the exact same quantity as the proportion of the common population who would encounter critical minimal mood in their lifetime, but was higher than the amount of ladies who experienced the most serious forms of depression. Among five%-ten% of folks generally suffer significant/significant depression during their lifetime. The examine, published in BJOG: An international journal of obstetrics and gynaecology, is the very first to adhere to a sizeable quantity of new mothers for as prolonged as four many years following birth. Elizabeth Duff, senior policy adviser at the parenting charity the NCT, mentioned: “This examine has integrated mothers for four many years right after birth, so suggests that perinatal mental wellness demands to be monitored for a longer period. Given the devastating effects of postnatal depression, wellness professionals need to give equal consideration to the psychological and physical health of dad and mom with young youngsters.”

A Division of Wellness spokeswoman mentioned it welcomed any new study that would lead to girls getting much better aid with maternal depression.

“We want to do every thing we can to make positive ladies and families get as significantly help as attainable all through pregnancy and past. That is why, earlier this month, we announced that professional instruction in psychological wellness will be rolled out for physicians and midwives to recognize and help girls who are at chance of depression or other psychological well being issues,” she said.

Numbers of midwives and overall health guests have been expanding underneath the coalition, although specialist psychological wellness medical professionals and midwives will assist increase earlier diagnosis of such issues, she added. Even so, the Royal School of Midwives mentioned that even more midwives were required to guarantee mothers obtained the very best possible care of their psychological welfare.

How females can help males spot symptoms of prostate cancer

– Feeling as however the bladder isn’t emptying correctly

– Dribbling following urinating

In the over video from Prostate Cancer United kingdom, John Robertson, a prostate cancer professional nurse, explains that the symptoms could be linked to bladder difficulties, or an enlarged prostate. In some situations, they can be due to prostate cancer and it truly is very best to get this checked by a GP.

Concern of the medical doctor

A latest examine by the National Pharmacy Association showed that nearly nine in ten men never like to problems a medical professional unless they have a “severe problem”. This reticence has largely been attributed to men’s worry of the doctor, (white coat syndrome) and male machismo.

Partners, wives or girlfriends of guys should inspire their loved 1 to get checked if they notice any uncommon bathroom routines.

Historically, females have normally been the custodians of overall health in the household. Mums, grandmothers, sisters, aunts – have usually been the ones to make their men check out overall health specialists and sort any variety of sick wellness out proactively.

The Actual Result in of Seasonal Allergy symptoms (Hint: It’s Not Pollen)

Much more men and women take into account spring their preferred season above any other. But for hundreds of thousands, the accompanying sneezing, coughing, itchy eyes, and brain fog of seasonal allergies make spring a time to be dreaded rather than enjoyed. And this spring is predicted to be worse than usual. The extended, cold winter and greater-than-average snowfall imply some plants are primed to make more pollen, in accordance to allergy experts. (1)

Apart from the normal sneezing, coughing, and watery eyes, inhalant allergies can leave you with significant brain fog, inability to concentrate and emphasis, fatigue, irritability, and depression.

Generally, individuals with allergic reactions seal up the property and consider to remain indoors. Then they try out a single of the myriad over-the-counter antihistamines. A lot of are below their doctor’s care taking prescription drugs or receiving allergy shots. These can definitely consider the joy out of this lovely season.

But there are a lot much better approaches to cope with this irritating problem.

Most folks blame pollen or mold spores for their seasonal allergy symptoms, but these are not the genuine result in at all!

Allergy signs and symptoms are caused by an overactive immune technique. Your immune system produces substances known as antibodies that safeguard you from undesirable invaders that could make you sick or trigger an infection.

When you have allergic reactions, your immune program is producing antibodies in response to exposure to factors like pollen, dust, or pet dander that it perceives as hazardous, even however they aren’t.

It is not the publicity to allergens that are the root cause of your allergies, it is your body’s overreaction causing the cascade of allergic signs and symptoms.

Here are five techniques to tackle your seasonal allergy symptoms without medicines or medications. Consider these methods to hold your allergy symptoms beneath management this season and stop attacks in the potential. You might even get permanent relief!

one. Lessen Allergen Exposure

Minimizing exposure to allergens offers your immune program less to react to. Here are steps to take to decrease your get in touch with with pollen:

  • Close your windows on high pollen count days to avert it from blowing inside in house. Maintain your vehicle windows up and use the AC when driving. If you’re in your car a great deal take into account getting an car air purifier. (Not to be baffled with a automobile air filter which has nothing to do with passengers’ air high quality!)

  • Do outdoors actions like light gardening, strolling, and other kinds of outside exercising or chores when pollen levels are reasonably lower. Trees and weeds usually release pollen in the morning, although grasses release pollen each morning and evening. Get an individual else to do your hefty gardening chores like grass cutting, weed whacking, and leaf blowing. If you have to do these routines, instantly take a shower, throw all clothes in the laundry, and wipe down your shoes when done.

  • Make your bedroom an allergen-free of charge zone. Giving your physique eight hrs in a “pure” surroundings can certainly lighten your allergic load. Get an air purifier just for the bedroom. Maintain your bedroom scrupulously clean. Getting tough surfaces — like hardwood floors as an alternative of carpet, and vinyl blinds rather of curtains — can make this occupation less complicated. Stay away from sleeping with pets who carry in pollen and distribute their dander in your bed. Really do not use chemical air fresheners, and undoubtedly really don’t smoke or allow any individual else smoke in the bedroom.

Closing up your home can trigger other issues, nonetheless. The level of air pollutants in the average property is 10x’s the level of pollutants outdoors. Dust, pollen, mold spores, tobacco smoke, and pet dander accumulate if your house is sealed shut. This can contribute to creating allergies all year extended! If you shut up your residence, clean up your inside air with a good air purifier.

A totally free and simple way to learn what type of allergens are peaking is to indicator up for pollen monitoring updates from Pollen.com. Enter your zip code to receive electronic mail alerts of higher pollen counts in your spot. I utilised this to assist me figure out which basic types of plants I was allergic to.

Having this heads-up can be a massive support in understanding when it’s time to begin taking precautions. In common, yr-round allergens are dust mites, mold spores, and pet dander. Spring pollen mostly comes from trees, early summertime pollen is mainly from grasses, and late summer season pollen is predominately ragweed.

2. Use a Saline Spray

A single weird way to reduce allergic response is to preserve the within of your nose clean with a saline nasal spray. In excess of-the-counter saline nasal sprays can help relieve stuffiness and congestion and they won’t lead to the rebound congestion that can comply with from the use of nasal decongestants.

When your nasal passages are dry, mild nasal crusting may arise, and bacterial infections can develop underneath these crusts. Saline sprays clean the nasal passages of crusts and mucus and also assist the organic cleaning technique of your nasal passages flushing away pollen in the method. (two)

Taking antihistamines contributes to this drying of your nasal passages. When the inside of your nose gets extremely dry, it can crack and develop microfissures, making the ideal environment for infection and allowing pollen to straight enter your system. In excessive instances these fissures can lead to nosebleeds.

Saline nasal sprays might sting somewhat. If you discover it too uncomfortable, try a preservative-free of charge model or one that is developed for kids.

three. Improve Your Immune System

Since allergy symptoms are fundamentally an immune program issue, for accurate and prolonged-lasting relief you need to enhance yours with the proper meals and nutrients.

Omega-3 fatty acids are critical for preventing allergy symptoms. This highly anti-inflammatory compound is not reliably discovered in the contemporary diet program except in grass-fed meat and wild-caught salmon, so for most folks supplementation is a must.

I use a high-top quality krill oil rather than the normal fish oil. It’s an superb supply of astaxanthin, one of the most potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory nutrients identified. Read labels before you get. Not all brands of krill oil have this.

Vitamin D is one more important nutrient that has been discovered to minimize allergy signs and even asthma.

Wheat sensitivity doesn’t manifest only as digestive problems, it contributes to oversensitivity to environmental variables as effectively. Wheat sensitivity can trigger difficulties you may possibly not count on like nasal congestion, asthma, sore throat, and itchy eyes. (three) The culprit in wheat is gluten, a protein that triggers an autoimmune response thus triggering irritation.

Minimize back on all grains. Really do not neglect that when you consume grains you are really consuming grass seeds. Numerous men and women report a dramatic reduction in hay fever and allergy signs and symptoms from cutting back on grains in standard, not just wheat.

Probiotics provide “friendly” bacteria that minimize allergic response to pollen as they heal your gut.

four. Handle Signs and symptoms With no Medication

If you’re already encountering allergy signs and symptoms, you want relief quick. But taking antihistamines doesn’t cure allergic reactions or change the allergic process — they simply block its expression.

Dr. William E. Berger, one of the nation’s foremost specialists on allergy symptoms and asthma, reviews that practically one third of allergy individuals really do not think their medications work. (four) Besides, pharmaceutical treatments often come with unwanted side results, this kind of as drowsiness, headaches, and nasal irritation.

Antihistamines are also one particular of the groups of medication recognized for causing brain fog and short-term memory loss. The sedative effects of these drugs can leave you feeling drowsy and impair your judgment and potential to drive.

There are a ton of natural allergy remedy alternatives — some are verified to operate but most have anecdotal proof only. The University of Maryland’s Center for Integrative Medication (five) suggests the following organic allergy treatments that have been proven to operate with no undesirable side results:

  • Nutrients: quercetin, spirulina, and vitamin C

  • Herbal treatments: butterbur, stinging nettle, and astragalus

  • Homeopathic remedies: Nux vomica, Arsenicum album, Allium cepa, and Euphrasia

  • Chinese medicine: Biminne, a mix of 7 conventional herbs

If you’d rather stick with honey, make confident it’s unprocessed, unfiltered, and unheated or it will not be any support at all.

5. Stay away from Cross-Reactivity

Another way to decrease allergy signs and symptoms is to be aware of cross-reactivity amongst plant proteins from pollen and typically-eaten fruits or vegetables. The theory is that your immune program recognizes similarities between distinct allergens and will react towards related allergens.

These crosses are not at all apparent. For example if you are allergic to ragweed, you need to steer clear of bananas and if you are bothered grasses you need to steer clear of celery. Who’d think? The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia publishes a chart of cross-reactivity food items you can view right here.
