My friend told me not to freeze my eggs and now I"m childless

The dilemma At the age of 35, I was single and childless, so I considered egg freezing. I found a clinic, sorted out transport and worked out costs. But before I went ahead I spoke to a close friend who strongly warned me against the idea. She stated removing eggs from your body and storing them in a freezer was silly. I respected my friend as she had been through many fertility treatments and so I cancelled my appointment.


I am now 40 and after meeting a very special man am struggling to conceive. My gynaecologist asked me why I had not frozen my eggs and I find myself furious with my friend. I am struggling to forgive her for her catastrophic advice.


I am sure she was not deliberately malicious, but I feel she has ruined my chances of ever being a parent. I have not said anything to her yet. How can I move on?


Mariella replies Stop the blame game. I appreciate that you are angry and frustrated. The vagaries of female fertility and its curtailment long before many of us are ready or in need of saying goodbye to the possibility of parenting is an evolutionary frustration.


Once upon a time we were unlikely to live much beyond 50. Today it’s double that and we are better prepared for parenting in our middle years. We mature more slowly, committed relationships start later, careers are rarely consolidated in our 20s – all of which knocks parenthood down the touchline.


Yet here you are suffering a similar fate to many women of our generation – finding the right relationship, but potentially too late to make it a family affair. Dumping responsibility for past choices on to someone else’s shoulders is not the way to solve your problem or your complex feelings around the baby-making issue. I’m startled that not freezing your eggs should be seen by your gynaecologist as a slip-up on your part. I suspect the majority of women, unless experiencing a relatable medical condition, would not have freezing their eggs high on their “to do” list in their mid-30s. Maybe we should. It’s one of a host of options we need to be discussing as our bodies struggle to keep pace with seismic shifts in society.

Blaming your friend for delivering an opinion, based on her own experience, is the last thing you should be focused on. Your anger would be better channelled in tackling your possibilities for conception. There’s a long and ever-increasing list to choose from – IVF, donor eggs, surrogate mothers – if having a baby is your priority. Getting your gynaecologist to show more imagination and make fewer unhelpful comments about choices long past would be a much more constructive occupation.


Then again, friction among friends seems a staple of long-held relationships. Some days I find myself longing for the innocent friendships of yore. In adulthood, refraining from manslaughter let alone maintaining civility with those you’ve “matured” alongside, gets ever harder. Over the decades, girlfriends develop opinions that are intractable, habits that are increasingly annoying and foibles, long suffered, become ever more insufferable. Where once all I asked for in a buddy was the potential for fun, a companion to share the late-night taxi fare with and an open phone line in times of emotional turmoil, now I demand sensitivity, compliance, flexibility, intuition, blind loyalty, political compatibility, back-up when required and free rein when not.


In short the older we get the less tolerant we become of anything less than perfection in those who’ve accompanied us through the years. The better we get to know ourselves the less flexible we are about stepping beyond established boundaries. It’s surely the reason so many of us get stuck in our ways, paused at a particular point, with no hunger to develop, seek new adventures or push ourselves. I’d go so far as to say it’s what makes us old!


I’m wondering how much credit your pal would have been given had she pushed you into egg freezing. Would your life have taken this same turn or a different swerve? It’s illogical to separate the choices we’re happy with from the ones we’d like to retake because they are intrinsically connected. Your imperative to have a baby may have pushed you faster into finding a relationship. The insurance of frozen eggs might have made you dawdle along the way and blinded you to the possibilities of the man you’ve met. That’s why gratitude for the things that turn out right is so much more important than raging against perceived losses.


Your friend may not have displayed great foresight, but that’s easy to judge in hindsight. Here in the present I suggest you take responsibility for your choices, channel anger into positive action and be grateful that you’ve met a great man.

Eggs lose free-range status on Pancake Day

On Shrove Tuesday, the biggest egg-buying day of the year, UK consumers are being warned that eggs branded as free range have actually been laid by housed hens because of emergency measures to combat the spread of bird flu.


All free-range egg boxes will carry a sticker explaining that the box contains “eggs laid by hens temporarily housed in barns for their welfare”.


But consumers, who will be stocking up on eggs to make pancakes on Tuesday, will still be charged a premium for free-range eggs.


The UK consumes an estimated 52m eggs on Pancake Day, more than double the normal rate. About half the eggs sold in supermarkets are usually free range.


On 6 December poultry farmers were ordered to house their flocks to protect the UK from a virulent outbreak of avian flu.


The stickers are being introduced because, under EU rules, if hens have been housed for more than 12 weeks they cannot be sold as free range.


Andrew Opie, the director of food policy at the British Retail Consortium, said: “What we will start to see is stickers appearing on boxes of eggs to indicate that the hens that have produced those eggs are no longer free range. The likelihood is that all egg boxes will be stickered.”


Asked by BBC Radio 4’s Farming Today programme whether prices would fall as a result, he said: “We would hope that customers would recognise that this is a challenge beyond the control of the farmers themselves and will continue to support British free range farmers through this difficult time.”


There have been several confirmed outbreaks of the H5N8 strain of avian flu this year, including on farms in Northumberland, Suffolk, Lancashire and Lincolnshire.


About 20% of egg producers have flocks in areas classed as a high risk of contagion. From Wednesday, the restrictions will begin to be eased.


All farmers in the high-risk areas will be required to continue to house birds. Those outside the area will be allowed to let birds out, but many are expected to continue to house their flocks as a precaution.

The H5N8 strain of bird flu poses no risk to humans. The British Free Range Egg Producers Association said birds were not being be kept in battery farm conditions.


It said: “While free-range egg farmers would prefer their birds to be outside, they also wouldn’t want to risk the health of their birds. Their sheds have plenty of room for the birds to move around freely and include scratching areas so birds can still display their natural instinctive behaviour.


“Farmers have also put in additional stimulants like footballs, cabbages and even Christmas trees to keep the birds happy.”


It added eggs “will still taste great and will have been laid by birds who were allowed outside before 6 December, and that will be allowed outside again as soon as it is safe”.


Opie said: “We expect more farmers to be bringing hens indoors than might be anticipated from those higher risk areas that have been identified by Defra [the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs].


“That’s a genuine concern from farmers to prevent the virus entering their flocks and destroying their livelihood. We anticipate that all eggs will be stickered for that reason.”

I’m sure you have been told that eggs high cholesterol content will cause heart disease… My question is “How true is this?” An egg has about 187 mg of cholesterol in it, but is it a risk factor for heart disease? Let’s talk about where cholesterol comes from… 85 percent of the cholesterol is secreted by the liver, and 15 percent of cholesterol can be retrieved by the diet. Cholesterol is actually a precursor for secreting vitamin D (hormone D), bile, acids for food breakdown, and acts as a nourishing agent for the myelin sheath and the rest of the brain. The neurons and bodily cells all have a phospholipid bi-layer, which transports materials in and out of the cells, and it is composed entirely of cholesterol…. I highly encourage you to check out the Northern Manhattan Study. This study states that higher LDL cholesterol had no opposite reaction or led as a precursor to heart disease. Statin drugs are usually prescribed to lower cholesterol levels. Crestor and Lipitor are among the most commonly prescribed among them. Statins also dramatically inhibit cholesterol’s vital roles like its ability to produce hormone D, bile, and acids, it can also damage neurons. Also, statins will also deplete the body of Coenzyme 10. Depletion of said enzyme can lead to fatigue, muscle weakness, and heart failure. So much for the medical profession helping to ease this epidemic… Heart Disease is one of the leading killers of our nation which could have been easily treated by diet and lifestyle changes. Plant-based diets seem to be the most credible solution, but I firmly believe pasture eggs should be incorporated into any diet. In order to check for markers of inflammation and oxidation, we must check our homocysteine levels. Homocysteine is an amino acid that is needed for functions can be converted into a molecule that is either harmless or dangerous. Homocysteine needs the amino acid methionine to sustain the harmful process. Excess methionine can cause homocysteine to damage blood vessels and cause cells to clot abnormally. Homocysteine tests are one of the best determinants of heart disease and stroke risk. Methionine’s main function is to provide methyl groups for cellular reactions. “A methyl group is a chemical fragment consisting of one carbon and three hydrogen atoms.” Dr. Weil talks on his website “When methionine donates a methyl group for a cellular reaction, it becomes homocysteine.” A high vitamin B intake, in general, will ease this problem, and an egg has a nutrient dense profile A. High intake Fruits, vegetables, grains, and eggs are a great source of Vitamin B6, which is a great metabolic utilizing agent for the heart. Intake of Vitamin B6 can prevent methionine from forming homocysteine as a harmful agent to our body.



With all of this being said, “Do Eggs Cause a rise in arterial plaque formation?” The answer is no. Eggs generally have a dense nutrient profile. The problem is, American chickens are left in deplorable conditions where they are placed in enclosed spaces. They are fed an improper diet and are physically abused and left in a state of trauma. Eggs and cholesterol from what evidence shows are excellent for human health and their link between cardiovascular disease are unclear and not justified. It is encouraged that everyone should eat their fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds along with eggs to maintain the best health. Cholesterol has long been demonized with it’s an ink to heart disease when it is sugar and synthetic chemicals and manufacturing methods that are the biggest demons that stop us from maintaining our best health. With that being said Eggs are very nutritious for your body, so make sure you get free-range, eggs from healthy chickens.

Babies Should Eat Eggs and Peanuts Early to Avoid Food Allergies

When babies eat certain foods early in life—the kinds so many end up allergic to, like eggs and peanuts—they’re less likely to develop allergies to those foods later on, finds a new analysis published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).


This is relatively new thinking. Not so long ago, in 2000, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended that allergenic foods be kept away from infants until they were at least a year old, and often older. That warning was especially strong for those with a family history of allergies. But, as an editorial published in the same issue of JAMA points out, in the next decade, food allergy prevalence nearly doubled in the United States.


That advice has been amended, and newer evidence has shown that introducing foods earlier is actually better for preventing food allergies. The authors of the just-published study reviewed all of the available evidence on the topic and included 146 studies in their final analysis.


They found evidence of “moderate certainty” that introducing peanuts early, between ages 4 and 11 months, is linked to a reduction in the risk of developing a peanut allergy. Eggs, too, showed this association when they were introduced between ages 4 and 6 months. Early introduction of another common allergen, fish, was also linked to less allergy—possibly due to the anti-inflammatory effects of omega-3s—though evidence for this link wasn’t as certain.


Early introduction didn’t seem to make a difference for autoimmune diseases, at least according to the available evidence; eating gluten young wasn’t associated with the risk of developing celiac disease.


Exactly why is a question researchers are still exploring. “It is not clear that it is the specific early introduction of an allergenic food that renders immunological protection, rather than the accompanying increased diversity in the diet that occurs as a by-product,” writes Dr. Matthew Greenhawt, an allergy and immunology specialist at Children’s Hospital Colorado, in the accompanying editorial. More research is necessary to figure out the ideal amounts of these allergens, the optimum times of introduction and the reasons behind the link.

Babies Should Eat Eggs and Peanuts Early to Avoid Food Allergies

The science is mounting – giving babies peanuts and eggs cuts allergy risk

In the 1970s, when we were in school, food allergies were rare. But Australian children now have the highest rate of food allergy in the world. Up to one in 10 infants and two in 10 school-aged children have a proven food allergy.


In the 14 years to 2012 there was a 50% increase in hospital visits for anaphylaxis, the most severe allergic reaction. Infants and toddlers accounted for much of this increase.


The most common food allergies are to nine main food proteins: cow’s milk, soy, egg, wheat, peanut, tree nuts, sesame, fish and seafood. Egg and peanut allergies are the most common in infants and toddlers.


New research published today in the Journal of the American Medical Association shows the early introduction of egg (from four to six months) and peanuts (from four to 11 months) is linked to lower rates of egg and peanut allergy.


The researchers analysed the combined results of trials investigating whether food allergens in babies’ diets prevent the development of allergies to these foods. They concluded there was “moderate” certainty that early introduction of egg or peanut was associated with lower risks of egg and peanut allergy.


They also found that early introduction of gluten (wheat) was not associated with an increased risk of coeliac disease.


The researchers used the term “moderate” certainty because the review is based on a mix of studies with different designs and of varying quality. Feeding studies can also be difficult to “blind”; for some studies participants and researchers knew who was given egg or peanut, so were open to some bias.


As a result the authors say more work needs to be done to better understand the precise optimal timing for introducing eggs and peanuts.


Nonetheless, these findings affirm the recently updated Australian infant feeding consensus guidelines. These state that when parents introduce solids – at about six months but not before four months – they should also introduce previously avoided foods such as peanut and egg. This should occur in the baby’s first year of life.


The problem is, there have been so many changes to guidelines over the last few decades that parents are no longer sure what to believe.


In Australia, dietary recommendations aiming to reduce the risk of food allergies began to appear in the early 1990s. They recommended infants avoid certain foods such as egg and peanut. These guidelines were largely based on outcomes of trials focusing on the mother avoiding allergens during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.


In 2008, a number of research projects (including our own) questioned whether these older studies were flawed because they had not adequately adjusted the results to account for the fact that those with a family history of allergies adhere to recommendations better than those without, thus biasing the result.


These new studies accounted for this fact. We found, paradoxically, that earlier introduction of foods such as egg and peanut, at about six months, appeared to protect against food allergy. This has resulted in a complete rethink in our approach to preventing food allergy.


(Note that these findings relate to the prevention of food allergies, not the management, which remains unchanged. Children with food allergies should continue to avoid those foods.)


Based on this research, feeding guidelines began stating that earlier introduction did not increase the risk of food allergy and may indeed be protective.


These recommendations were strengthened this year after research trials tested the effect of eating common allergens (in particular, peanut) in the first year of life compared with completely avoiding them. The guidelines now recommend that exposure to egg, peanut and other foods frequently associated with food allergy should occur in the first year of life to offer protection.


It’s still not clear if this approach alone will prevent the whole food allergy epidemic. Some children will still develop food allergies despite following the feeding guidelines.


We know the tendency to develop allergic disease is inherited but environmental factors, including the microbiome, vitamin D levels, migration effects, the number of siblings and exposure to pets also all appear to play influential roles, as does the presence of early onset eczema. Research trials are investigating the role these factors play in the development of food allergy risk.


In the meantime, experts agree there appears to be a window of opportunity in the first year of life where exposure to foods such as peanut and egg decreases the risk of allergy to these foods. Diet diversity remains an important part of a healthy diet.

"Eggs in the bank": how one clinic is making egg freezing less expensive

Rhiannon Beauregard, 33, is visiting New York for a few days. But the sex and marriage therapist is not here for a vacation, to see the sights or visit friends in the city where she once went to college. She is here to freeze her eggs.


Beauregard lives in Austin, Texas where she runs her own practice, but has opted to come to New York to use the services offered by Extend Fertility. The clinic is the first of its kind – focusing only on egg freezing and not offering any other fertility services and treatments such as in vitro fertilization. By doing that, the clinic has been able to cut costs of its services to $ 5,000 while offering personalized service to each one of its clients.


One of the barriers to egg freezing becoming mainstream is the cost. The procedure was still deemed to be experimental until just a few years ago and was mostly an accepted way to extend fertility for older women, cancer patients or those diagnosed with fertility disorders.


Since it is considered to be an elective procedure, egg freezing is typically not covered by health insurance. While Extend Fertility is unable to cut the costs of medicine (the clients are required to pay for it on their own) or the future costs of IVF, its founders hope that by cutting the cost of the initial procedure in half they will make the procedure accessible for more women.


“It’s expensive either way. We know that,” says Joshua Klein, co-founder and chief medical officer of Extend Fertility. He points out that $ 5,000 is still half as expensive as $ 10,000 and adds that the Extend is “working with financing partners” so that those interested could opt to pay $ 200 or $ 300 a month for a while instead of a one-time payment. “We are trying to be innovative and thoughtful about that,” he says.

Should women view egg freezing as some kind of down payment on their future? Klein would prefer that they think of it an investment for both the future and the present. Many women worry about meeting the right guy because “they hear that biological clock ticking loudly”, he says. That ticking is a stress factor in their lives. By freezing their eggs and knowing that they have preserved their fertility, they can silence that ticking and receive the immediate benefit of “peace of mind”.


On 8 August, two days before the clinic officially opened, Beauregard was on the fourth day of her pill regiment.


Beauregard has to inject herself daily with some very expensive drugs. Prior to starting the regimen, she had to come off her birth control pills, which resulted in a couple of days of feeling “weepy”. She is bloated and on the mornings that she goes in for checkups at Extend, she ends up watching an ultrasound of her uterus – staring at her eggs instead of a baby.


However, she says, the staff at Extend have been extremely supportive. Every client is assigned their own fertility specialist and is available to accompany them to all of their meetings. The Extend office, just a block or two south of Central Park, also does not resemble a typical fertility clinic. The walls are light blue. The rooms look more like small conference rooms with round tables and a handful of chairs. There are no big tables with stirrups, no posters with uteri or models of babies nestled in a uterus.

“Even the way this room is set up, we are trying to build into our experience the idea that this is not an illness thing, that we are not trying to cure a disease,” says Klein, sitting in one of the meeting rooms. “Here we don’t want to make people feel that they have a problem. They are just a woman living in the 21st century, coming to the doctor about preserving options for the future. It shouldn’t feel like a problem.”


For some, it might be a combination of the two. A while back Beauregard was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) – an disorder that affects hormone production and can affect woman’s fertility in women of reproductive age. She was 32 at that time and single.


“I didn’t really have any plans to go out and find me a partner to have a child with,” she says. She began thinking about what would happen over the next 10 years. “We know without a shadow of the doubt that when you freeze eggs when you are younger, you are going to be putting away something that’s much, much, much more likely to be helpful for you than if you wait to do it as a reactionary measure when you are older,” he says.


According to him, the profile of women interested in egg freezing is slowly shifting from “panic-mode 40-year old” to “a proactive smart-thing-to-do-because-I am-a-young-aspiring-woman 30-year-old”. Fertility company EggBanxx, which targets younger career-focused women with slogans like “Lean in, but freeze first!”, estimates that by 2018, 76,000 women will have frozen their eggs.


Beauregard says she would have eventually considered freezing her eggs even without the PCOS diagnosis.


“Since I am single now I don’t want to put that kind of pressure on a new relationship,” she says. “If I hadn’t frozen my eggs, it would be one of the first things we talk about: ‘Hey, how do you feel about kids? Because we have to start making decisions in the next four to five years.’ I feel like a lot of pressure has been lifted off of me.”

The cost was the only thing that made Beauregard think twice. While researching her options, she often felt that this was a moneymaking scheme for doctors and clinics.


The $ 5,000 price tag at Extend seemed affordable in comparison. Despite that, the procedure and the drugs cost all her savings.


“Most women in their mid-30s do not have a large savings to fall back on and because we do not have any other support like a partner. The big risk for me was less about the procedure and more about ‘OK, I don’t have any savings left’,” she says. Then laughing, she continues: “There is a risk of walking out into the world with some eggs in the bank but no money.”

Beauregard admits she underestimated the cost of the drugs, which she assumed would be a few hundred dollars. It turned out to be closer to a couple of thousand dollars, instead. To Talia Zapolanski, freezing her eggs is akin to an insurance policy.

It seems like a good idea. Hopefully I will be able to, when the time comes, get pregnant and have kids the natural way but you never know.”


Egg freezing should not be one of those things that we don’t talk about, according to both Beauregard and Zapolanski.


“When I was telling people that I was freezing my eggs, a lot of people didn’t know what to say. It makes people uncomfortable – eventually they will get curious about it, but a lot of people are a little dumbfounded that I am so open about it,” said Beauregard. “I want to make sure that people feel comfortable talking about these options.”


Zapolanski says she has encouraged “no less than five friends to go do the same”.


Recently, when she was visiting Los Angeles, she shared with a friend from college that she recently froze her eggs.


“She kind of paused and looked at me in shock that I had shared that and she said: ‘I am glad you said that, I am about to go through the process and I am so nervous about and I have nobody to talk to’,” she said. “It’s a very taboo subject.”
