8 Cancer Causing Foods You Probably Eat Regularly

Making nutritional decisions concerning types of foods you should avoid in helping your body to prevent cancer, is as vital as choosing cancer-fighting foods to include in your diet. Before discussing cancer-triggering foods, I would explain two factors believed by scientists to increase cancer risk and my view of how you can influence them epigenetically.

Two factors that increase a person’s risk of developing cancer is genetic makeup and environmental triggers (e.g. food choices, sunlight, alcohol. viruses, tar in tobacco smoke, and pollutants in the air). According to some scientists, you can’t change these two factors.

As far as genetic makeup is concerned, even though when a person born with and inherited gene fault (mutated gene) may increase the risk of cancer, it doesn’t mean that he/she will definitely get cancer. What it really means is that you are more likely to develop cancer than the average person.

Lifestyle intervention

I personally believe you can influence faulty genes epigenetically. Live up your life by adopting a holistic healthy lifestyle, for instance, is believed would epigenetically help you body to decrease the risk of cancers – healthy lifestyle elements switch off the gene. Conversely, unhealthy lifestyles such as poor food choices are believed can switch on the genes,  may result in cancer development.

Similarly, you can change environmental triggers by making diligent decisions, for instance, if you have fair skin you have to limit sun exposure during summer noon. As far as food choices are concerned, avoiding cancer-triggering foods is as vital as choosing balanced nutritious foods.

The remaining of the article will focus on some of the foods and drinks thought to increase risks of developing different types of cancer.

Deep-fried food

Deep frying is a method of cooking foods by heating cooking oils at high temperatures. This causes chemical changes to the oils and the foods, which produces lipid peroxides, aldehydes, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons PACs). Studies found these substances to be toxic to the nerves and cells and may cause cancer.

When proteins, carbohydrates, and fats are heated at high temperature they changed to PACs. Besides changed to end products, PACs, carbohydrates and proteins also end up as acrylamides (or acrylic amides)and heterocyclic amines (HAs), respectively. Both types of compounds are also implicated in causing oxidative stress via oxidation.

Some people believe that all cooking oils of plant origins do not contain cholesterol. Yes, it is true as cholesterol is only found in animals so cooking oils do not contain it. Furthermore, it is stated on some of the labels ‘does not contain cholesterol.’ The truth is all cooking oils of plant origins contain phytosterol, a cholesterol cousin. When heated at high temperature it can change to oxycholesterols (oxidized phytosterols or cholesterols).

All these chemicals are thought to cause oxidative stress by attacking cell membranes, DNA, and enzymes.

If you choose to prepare your foods by a deep-frying method, saturated fats like coconut and palm oils are the best because they are not easily oxidized compared to polyunsaturated fats like sunflower, corn, and soy oils.

Charred foods

Many people love the smoky flavor of charred foods. Grilled meats such as chicken barbecue, ‘satey’ (also spelled ‘sate’ or ‘sateh,’ South East Asian grilled meats eaten with special sauces), grilled vegetables and burnt toast are typical examples.

All charred protein, carbohydrate, and fat foods contain PAHs, chemical compounds of which are similar to coal tar. Similar to deep-fried foods, charred carbohydrates and proteins contain acrylamides and heterocyclic amines (HAs), respectively. All these chemicals can cause oxidative stress.

Microwave popcorn

Caramel is one of the flavoring agents used to prepare microwave popcorn. It is prepared by heating table sugar so it contains some amounts of PAHs. Microwave linings are made of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), which is recognized by The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a substance “likely” carcinogenic. PFOA has been linked to kidney, testicular, liver, and pancreatic cancer in human and animal studies. Other cancers like ovarian cancer and non-Hodgkin lymphoma are also associated with PFOA.

Some people believe that eating microwave popcorn once in a while is OK. They say it can pose serious problems to those who overindulge in it by eating it excessively every day.

Conversely, others believe you can avoid the risk of cancer by buying organic corn kernels and air-popping them in coconut oil on the stove and add pure butter plus some aromatic herbs such as rosemary and marjoram for flavoring.

Artificial sweeteners

Some people use artificial sweeteners such as sucralose (brand name Splenda) or acesulfame K to sweeten their drink. Studies on their potential for cancer risk have been ongoing for several decades.

A study performed in 2015, for instance, has found sucralose may be associated with a higher risk for leukemia. However, critics say the levels of the sweeteners fed to mice in experiments were thousands of times higher than any person would likely to consume.

Some experts assert that as research into the potentially toxic effects artificial sweeteners is under way, they suggest general public to use something natural until studies come out with sound studies.

Alternative sweeteners such as stevia extract, Lo Huan Guo (in the USA, buy it from Chinese medicine outlets in China towns), and xylitol (low-calory sugar alcohol) can be used as table sugar substitute.

Excessive amounts of alcohol

Studies have found a causal link of alcohol consumption to the development of nine cancers, including oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, breast, colon, rectum, gallbladder, and liver.

Jürgen Rehm, PhD., Director of the Social and Epidemiological Research Department at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto, Ontario, Canada was quoted as saying, “……The fact that alcohol is a carcinogen has been clearly confirmed.”

In your body, ethanol from any types of alcohols is changed to ethanal (belongs to functional group aldehyde), which has been found to be very toxic to cells (cytotoxic).

Farmed salmon

Salmon is rich in healthy fats known as omega-3 fatty acids. Farmed salmon is cheaper than the wild-caught one, but many people don’t know that farmed salmon contains less omega-3 when compared to wild salmon and it has higher levels of potentially cancer-causing contaminants.

According to Environmental Working Group, on average, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) levels in farmed salmon is 16 times higher compared to that of wild salmon, four times the levels in beef, and 3.4 times the PCBs found in other seafood.

Salted foods

Stomach cancer is still the fourth most common cancer; therefore, it remains an important public health burden worldwide, especially in developing countries.  Studies have found limited or probable evidence that the consumption of salted food (including salted fish, Chinese-style), is associated with higher risk of the development of stomach cancer.

Since salt intake has been correlated with Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) infection,

Scientists believe that there is a possibility of high salt intake coupled with Helicobacter pylori infection may synergize to promote the development of stomach cancer. Additionally, salt may also cause stomach cancer through directly damaging stomach mucous membrane, promoting accelerated epithelial proliferation and mutation of the stomach lining, and inducing hypergastrinemia, which in turn leads to eventual acid-secreting loss and progression to gastric cancer.

Sugary foods

Many people are ‘naturally’ attracted to sweet-taste foods. Some people believed humans are designed to get attracted to sweet-taste foods because much of them are loaded with energy-dense carbohydrates. However, chronic consumption of sugary foods and refined grains can lead to the development of cancers, studies say.

So, each time you want to satisfy your sweet-tooth, grab an apple, orange or mandarin. At times, you are actually thirsty, not hungry. Drinking a glass of spring water can be quite feeling. Similarly, you can do the same thing each time you feel hungry in between meals, you’ll gradually get used to it.

Knowledge is everything

You need a certain number of calories per day via diligently eating nutritious foods consists of three major macronutrients: carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.

Some people believe that despite ‘the dose makes the poison,’ what determines the toxicity of the diet as a whole is not the amounts of toxins in foods. It is the ratio o toxins to calories that matter most. Therefore, they further believe that eating carcinogenic foods such as charred meats or farmed salmon are OK provided you take them once in a while.

They also believe that as long as you adopt healthy dietary habits including taking good daily portions of fruits and vegetables as they are loaded with antioxidants, which are used to neutralize free radicals including by-products of liver detoxification).

13 Ways to Uncover Cancer Causing Toxins In Your Home

When we uncover what can be toxic to our immune, respiratory, digestive and endocrine systems, we can remove these from our living environment. My thoughts are, the only way to choose health is with proper information and awareness. Find out if you have cancer causing toxins in your home.

1- Your cloths may be tox-sick. Research states synthetic materials, thermoplastics and wrinkle free cloths can be filled with formaldehydes. Formaldehyde is viewed as a carcinogen for humans and respiratory cancer.(1) Additionally, exposure to paint, lacquer, glue and cleaning products which contain formaldehyde can increase risk for nasal cancer. (1a) If you live next to a fracking facility, they  can increase your exposure to unsafe amounts of formaldehyde. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are chemicals causing liver damage, kidney damage, and central nervous system damage. (1b)

2- Electromagnetic frequencies can harm brain cells, eyes and neurotransmitters. Avoid EMF blue light from computers, wifi, cells phones, televisions and other electrical devices in or near where you sleep, such as smart meters. EMF’s can not only disrupt our sleep and hormones they can be linked to disrupted DNA.(2)

3- Make sure your mattress isn’t treated with a flame retardant which can impact thyroid disease and thyroid cancer.(3)

4- A professional dry cleaner may put your health at risk. Trichloroethylene is an organic chemical that has been used in dry cleaning and linked to liver and kidney cancer.(4) There are non-toxic sustainable ways of dry-cleaning your cloths.

5- What pesticides are you spraying on your lawn? Environmental endocrine disrupting chemicals including pesticides have been linked to cancer,(5) especially breast and prostate cancer. Atrazine (6) is one of the most widely used herbicides in the U.S., and is sprayed on our lawns, golf courses and found in our water supply. Atrazine is also sprayed on conventional foods including corn, sugarcane, and wheat. It helps to know your farmer.

6- Detox your medicine cabinet? Acetaminophen and non-aspirin NSAIDs are associated with a significant risk of developing kidney cancer. (7)  Approximately fifteen million Americans suffer from depression. There is an association between the use of antidepressant medications and colorectal cancer risk.(8) Know the side-effects from your medications.

7- Chemicals found in laundry product such as: Downey® and Bounce® can be harmful to your lungs.(9) The Consumer Product Safety Commission, which regulates cleaning supplies, air fresheners, and laundry products, currently does not require manufacturers to disclose any ingredients on the label. According to Anne Steinemann,(10) a professor of civil and environmental engineering and public affairs at the University of Washington, Seattle, “Disclosing all ingredients could be a first step to understanding potential toxicity and health effects.”

8- Caution! There is a direct link between processed meats and cancer. “In 2015 the International Agency for Research on Cancer concluded that bacon, ham, and other processed meats are “carcinogenic to humans.” “Eating 50 grams of processed meat daily raises risk of colorectal cancer by eighteen percent.” “Today CSPI is asking for a warning label on packages of processed meat that says: “USDA WARNING: Frequent consumption of processed meat products may increase your risk of developing cancer of the colon and rectum.”

9- The dirt on sugar. Sugar doesn’t just feed cancer cells, it produces them. There is excess insulin in the blood(11) and related risk between colon, prostate, pancreatic,(12) and breast cancer.  The Oreo Cookie, for instance, can be your drug of choice and has been said to be as addictive as cocaine.(13)

10- Cow dairy infected with insulin like Growth Factor (rBGH) is not good for human consumption. “Acne, breast cancer and prostate cancer have all been linked epidemiologically to dairy intake.”(14)

11- It’s a new year and time to discard old spices in your pantry. Your spice cabinet may contain old, lifeless, and toxic ingredients that include: GMO Corn in Maltodextrin and Corn Syrup Solids, Caramel Color, Aspartame, and Modified Corn Starch. These are found to be harmful to our kidneys.(15)

12- Research over recent years indicates the health of mitochondria is very much lifestyle and diet dependent.(16) Mitochondria are our energy sources. Addictions, cravings, or excessive consumption of  MSG and trans-fats reduces mitochondrial efficiency and increases (ROS) Reactive Oxygen Species. Disrupted mitochondria can pave the way for non-alcoholic liver disease.(17)

13- Our children are exposed to a variety of chemicals in processed foods. Some of these toxic ingredients are linked to cancer. For example Doritos™ ingredients include: GMO corn, cheese, maltodextrin, and corn syrup solids, artificial dyes such as red and yellow, GMO (18) vegetable oils and hydrogenated oils, refined salt and sugar, MSG, wheat and acrylamide.(19)

There are an abundance of un-safe and un-natural foods that well-meaning friends and family bring to parties or gatherings. But, if we already suffer from inflammation in our guts, (Autism, Gerd, IBS, Colitis, Leaky Gut) joints, (arthritis) bones (osteoporosis, poor oral health) and brains, (brain fog, dementia, Alzheimer’s) eating more of these un-natural foods isn’t going to help us feel better, be happier or enjoy our day. On a positive note: we can eliminate the inflammation by avoiding all un-natural processed and boxed foods (thus eliminating the cause.) Just another reason to create your own colorful, organic meals in 2017.

A Happy Meal Doesn’t Make You Happy: Are Convenient Meals Causing Depression & ADHD?

Are convenience meals causing ADHD & depression? We have all been there. We are running to a baseball game, and it appears easier to go through a drive-thru when your child is hungry, but have you ever really thought about what’s inside these “fast foods” targeted at kids? Move the free toy inside and take a deeper look. You will notice that the long list of neurotoxic ingredients in these “happy meals” cause everything from ADHD to depression to cancer.  It is a long and confusing jumble of neurotoxic chemicals and carcinogens. What effects are these foods are having on your child’s health? How do these ingredients contribute to the very disorders you then seek to medicate away like ADHD and depression.

What’s in this Stuff?

The majority of kid’s meals are made up of a hamburger and fries, which we have already identified as cancer causing foods. Burger King still offers soda with their kid’s meal, even though other chains have eliminated it. Have you seen the ingredient list in these meals? A cheeseburger contains 70 ingredients! That Happy Meal being marketed to your child is not something you should be happy about. To go line by line with every ingredient in a Happy Meal would take a long time, but you can review all of their ingredients on their website. What I found in my research were non-organic meat, dairy, fruits, and vegetables. All of these items contain harmful GMOs and pesticides. In a typical Happy Meal, you will find 540 calories, 18 grams of fat, 0.5 gram of trans fat, 790 mg of sodium, and 32 grams of sugar.

What about skipping the burger and fries and choosing chicken? Well, Chick-fil-A’s chicken contains MSG in their seasoning and breading. It’s also filled with GMOs, pesticides, and enriched flour, like nearly all of the foods on our list so far. McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets also contain the same things, although they don’t just come right out and say MSG. The natural flavors and seasoning are common ingredients where hidden MSG lies.

Better Alternative- Chipotle

This fast food chain’s motto is “food with integrity, ” and they are working to stand by this. Although their full menu is not organic or GMO-free yet, they do have a detailed ingredient list which labels what items on their menu are organic or contain GMOs.

Best Alternative- Skip the Fast Food

It may seem obvious, but because over 80% of the commercial feed for animals is GMO, it’s difficult to eat out and avoid GMOs. Fast food is usually higher in fat, calories, and sodium than food prepared in our homes. You have complete control over what foods go into your home cooking, unlike what is prepared at a fast food chain.

"We need to talk about shit": just six bugs causing 78% cases of diarrhoea

The role of microorganisms in childhood diarrhoea has been greatly underestimated, with pathogens including bacteria, viruses and parasites, responsible for almost twice as many cases as previously thought, research has revealed.

The study published in the Lancet, which involved the analysis of stool samples from more than 10,000 children in countries across Africa and south Asia, also found that nearly 78% of cases were caused by just six bugs – an insight scientists say could help to tackle the problem.

“It really comes down to just a handful of pathogens that are most important,” said Eric Houpt of the University of Virginia who co-authored the study. “So it is not a hopelessly long list of infections that we can’t do anything about.”

Diarrhoea is the second most common cause of death among children under five after pneumonia, and it has also been linked to stunted growth. It is believed to be caused by infections that spread by contaminated food and waterbetween people, but it has been difficult to pinpoint the cause of each case.

“Diarrhoea in children under five years old remains an enormous public health problem with half a million deaths each year or more, mostly in Africa and south Asia,” said Houpt.

He says the research will galvanise scientists to develop new ways to tackle the pathogens responsible for diarrhoea. “My feeling is that vaccine developments and proper use of antibiotics can lead to a large decrease in childhood diarrhoea over the next 10 to 20 years if we target these six pathogens, while hopefully economic development trickles along,” he said.

Writing in the Lancet, an international team of researchers describe how they re-analysed stool samples collected as part of an earlier multi-year project called the Global Enteric Multicenter Study, which looked at cases of moderate to severe diarrhoea in children under five in seven countries across Africa and south Asia.

The initial results, published three years ago, suggested that 51.5% of cases were down to pathogens, with the findings based on a suite of analytical methods including culturing bacteria. But researchers decided to re-analyse the samples in the light of the recent development of highly sensitive genetic analysis techniques.

The new study analysed samples from 10,608 children, half of whom had diarrhoea and half were unaffected “controls”, in an attempt to unpick the proportion of cases caused by bacteria, viruses and other pathogens, focusing on 32 known to be linked to diarrhoea.

“These [new techniques] get down to lower amounts. We can tell not only what is there for the 32 but how much is there – so they give a quantitative result as well,” said Houpt.

The results reveal that the influence of pathogens has been underestimated, with 89.3% of childhood diarrhoea cases caused by pathogens. Just six, including rotavirus and Cryptosporidium parasites, were responsible for almost 78% of cases.

What’s more, almost 40% of diarrhoeal cases showed evidence of two or more pathogens, suggesting that multiple infections are at play, while even among the apparently healthy controls many children were found to have low levels of infection.

Of the six key pathogens identified, only one – rotavirus – currently has a vaccine available, although vaccines for two of the other pathogens, bacteria known as Shigella and ETEC (a type of E.Coli), are in the pipeline.

Professor Val Curtis, director of the environmental health group at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, welcomed the findings, saying the research has demystified the causes of the condition. “It is exciting because we are no longer in the dark ages about diarrhoea,” she said. “We are moving into a new era where we can actually use molecular methods to detect with much more sensitivity the pathogens in stools.”

“Diarrhoeal disease is not sexy. It sounds unpleasant. It has never been the area that people have really, really wanted to put their effort into,” she said. “’We need to talk about shit’ is my campaign slogan.”

low cholesterol may be causing your depression and anxiety

Your blood work came back normal but you still feel like crap?

Why low cholesterol is not as healthy as you were led to believe.

You go to see the doctor because you have been feeling depressed, or have anxiety, aggression, low sex drive, memory issues, fatigue or you basically just don’t feel like yourself.

It can be good news to hear that your blood work is normal but yet a sinking feeling because you still don’t know why you are feeling the way you are.

Today I am only going to address one marker on your blood work that may be affecting your mood, physical and mental health. And this one may surprise you!

Cholesterol: Why low cholesterol is not as good for your health as your think

Note: in this blog I am only addressing total cholesterol.

Many people have low cholesterol either through diet or via medication.  This may seem like a great thing-your doctor tells you this is great. You eat low fat food products, limit the amount of meats, butter and eggs you consume and think you are doing all the right things however if this is the case why don’t you feel well?

Yes, I said low cholesterol not elevated-I know you strive to get your numbers low but I am going to provide you with some information as to why you don’t want your numbers too low for overall health and wellbeing.

What do I mean by low? Anything below 160 mg/dl is considered too low based on research and studies.  I however think that even this can be too low for some and some may benefit from being in the 180-200 range. (Some studies show that cholesterol levels above 200 mg/dl are beneficial for some age groups)  But studies link cholesterol below 160 mg/dl with depression, aggression, premature aging, anxiety and low sex drive.

How can low cholesterol have this effect on your body?

Before I go on to tell you why you DON’T want low cholesterol I want to also recommend a book that can give you more information on cholesterol, cholesterol medications and much more. It is “The Great Cholesterol Myth” by J. Bowden and F. Sinatra.  This book however will focus more on the issue of heart disease which is not being addressed in this article.

Here’s the thing-you need cholesterol for healthy brain function so stop trying to get it down so low Cholesterol is needed to make brain cells! Yes, you need cholesterol; it is not your enemy.

For instance, you need cholesterol to make your vitamin D. This is extremely important.   Vitamin D is actually a hormone, not a vitamin and it is made from cholesterol in the body.  So having low cholesterol may contribute to low D status.  Low D is also linked to depression so if you are also on a statin, this can contribute to low D status and thus contribute to feelings of depression.  Vitamin D3 supplementation is cheap-just be sure to take it with a meal that contains fat in order to get the greatest absorption rate.

Cholesterol is not just found in your bloodstream. Cholesterol is present in every cell in your body where it helps to produce cell membranes, hormones, vitamin D and bile acids to help you digest your fats. It will improve the absorption of vitamins A, D, K and E.  It strengthens your cell walls.  It is vital for immune function. It is also important for neurological function, which is why low cholesterol is linked to memory loss.

Think about this: if your cholesterol is too low you will have difficulty making your hormones. Low hormone levels can be associated with numerous physical and mental health issues.   Cholesterol is the building block for steroid hormones.  I think this is so important!  You cannot make estrogen, testosterone, cortisone and other vital hormones without cholesterol!

Your liver also needs to be functioning well in order for optimal cholesterol production. So as you can see, each health issue should not be treated as a separate entity but instead look at the body as everything is connected.

Again, having too low of levels of cholesterol in your body can increase your risk of suicide, depression, aggression, cancer and even Parkinson’s disease. Yes, it can do all that!  Cholesterol is there to help you not kill you!

It is not the cholesterol per say that can be harmful for your body but is only detrimental when it is oxidized and contributes to inflammation. So for this reason, eat cholesterol rich foods such as organic grass fed meats and poultry, shellfish, fish, raw dairy, grass fed butter and pasture raised eggs and instead avoid the foods that will contribute to inflammation such as oxidized oils and highly processed simple carbs and high sugary foods.  This means avoid breads, donuts, pastries, cookies and so forth.  Cook with healthy fats such as coconut oil and tea seed oil and avoid vegetable, corn and safflower oils which will contribute to inflammation.

Enjoy foods in their natural state and reduce the amount of sugar in your diet instead of fearing cholesterol.

Florida mobilizes to control mosquitos causing "unprecedented" Zika outbreak

A 500 square foot area in the Wynwood neighborhood of Miami, Florida is now the epicenter of the US fight against Zika, as federal and state health officials said at least 15 people were infected with the virus by local mosquitoes.

Officials said more diagnoses could be made in the coming days. The cases represent the first Zika infections transmitted by mainland American mosquitoes. The city began aerial spraying against the mosquitoes, a technique whose effectiveness is hotly criticized.

Related: Scientists edge closer to creating effective Zika virus vaccine

“Zika is unprecedented,” said Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director Dr Tom Frieden, at a press conference Thursday with Florida governor Rick Scott and state health officials. “We’ve never before had a mosquito-borne disease that can cause birth defects.”

Frieden said his top priority is to lower mosquito populations in the area. The mosquito that transmits the disease, Aedes aegypti, lives in and around homes, and can breed in containers as tiny as a bottle cap.

“It’s not going to easy, this is a difficult mosquito to control,” said Frieden. “Coffee cup, paint can, bucket for collecting rainwater … trash that can support a little bit of water when it rains” all will need to be emptied, Frieden said, and “a major effort to clean that entire effort” will be undertaken.

“What we want to see is mosquito counts coming down,” he said.

Related: Houston’s mosquito hunters take on Zika: ‘We cannot spray our way out’

Scott also repeatedly emphasized that Florida is still “safe” for the roughly 110 million tourists that travel to the state each year, even as officials warned pregnant women not to visit the Wynwood neighborhood.

Zika is believed to cause microcephaly, or abnormally small heads and severe developmental problems, in babies whose mothers are infected with the disease.

There is no specific treatment for the virus, no vaccine and little is known about how it impacts children not born with apparent birth defects. It is also sexually transmitted and can cause an autoimmune disorder that can lead to paralysis called Guillain-Barré.

Already, Miami has the longest mosquito season of any major city in the country, according to a new analysis by Climate Central. On average, just 28 days per year are inhospitable to mosquitoes in Miami, an increase of 20 days since 1980.

And although the recent infections in Miami are the first to be transmitted by local mosquitoes, cases of Zika have entered the US for months now. The CDC confirmed more than 1,800 infections in people returning to from travel. In Puerto Rico, more than 5,500 people have been infected with the virus.

Despite ample warning from experts that Zika would reach, and likely infect, American mosquitoes, Congress was unable to pass any appropriations to combat the disease.

A bipartisan effort by Florida’s senators, Republican Marco Rubio and Democrat Bill Nelson, to fund President Obama’s request for $ 1.9bn in Zika funding was quickly quashed. A Senate proposal for $ 1.1bn also failed, and a House proposal loaded with “poison pill” abortion politics riders also failed.

Instead, the Health and Human Services Administration raided other budgets to fund Zika vaccines and mosquito control efforts across the country, including monies originally allocated to fight Ebola. Already scarce dollars are expected to run out before the National Institutes of Health is able to begin the second phase of Zika vaccine clinical trials this fall.

“Now that the United States is in the height of mosquito season and with the progress in developing a Zika vaccine, the need for additional resources is critical,” HHS secretary Sylvia Burwell wrote in an 3 August letter requesting additional funding.

Public outcry has also hampered what some experts believe is one of the best answers to a complicated problem – aerial spraying. Local resistance in Puerto Rico has so far stopped fumigation with a CDC recommended chemical called naled.

The mosquito that carries Zika also carries a range of viruses, including Dengue fever and chikungunya. When Aedes mosquitoes spread Dengue fever through Puerto Rico in 1987, the pesticide naled was also used in a mass spraying campaign on the island.

The man who ran a study on that spraying, and the former head of the CDC’s dengue branch, Duane Gubler, told the University of Minnesota Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy that the mosquito’s habitat in trash cans, closets and indoors makes mass spraying challenging at best.

“Successful spraying against Aedes depends on too many factors. Do people have their windows open? What rate is the wind speed? What is the weather?” Gubler told CIDRAP in July. “Spraying doesn’t kill larvae, and naled isn’t a residual insecticide. You’d have to spray weekly to make an impact.”

Miami-Dade county mayor Carlos Gimenez told the Miami Herald that even he had heard conflicting accounts of using naled.

“Some say it’s effective. Some say it’s not that effective. But it’s been recommended by the state and the federal government and we’re going to do it,” Gimenez told the Miami Herald.

“If it has a success rate of 10%, 20%, 30%, then that’s 30% more than what we had before.”

Even the company that makes naled admitted potential drawbacks.

“Resistance is always a potential in a living ecosystem,” Jeff Alvis, a business manager at Amvac Chemical told Chemical & Engineering News in February, about its effectiveness.

In Florida, state officials have tested 2,400 people for Zika across several counties. Officials also said that at least one other case in south-west Florida is also being investigated, but called it “unrelated”.

“As long as there is Zika spreading anywhere, pregnant women should protect themselves against mosquito bites,” said Frieden.
