Ice baths and snow meditation can cold therapy make you stronger?

Before Scott Carney set about climbing a Polish mountain in his underwear in temperatures 10 degrees below zero, he believed his days of adventure were just about over. He was in his mid-30s. An anthropologist by training and a journalist by vocation he had written two books about the dangerous extremes to which humans go to find salvation – the first about the black market in organ donation, the second about the fatal consequences of a particular meditation practice.

His journey to the Polish mountain – called Sněžka, 5,300ft, the pinnacle of the Silesian mountain range – had begun one afternoon at his computer in Long Beach, California, with palm trees swaying gently outside his window. He had been idly Googling when he came across a picture of a man in his 50s sitting cross-legged on a glacier in the Arctic Circle, unclothed.

The man was Wim Hof, a Dutch evangelist for an extreme physical method that he claimed allowed him to raise and lower his body temperature at will and to control his immune system with the power of his mind. Carney was intrigued, but also highly sceptical. He decided to investigate Hof’s claims, and persuaded Playboy magazine to sign him up for a week-long initiation into the Dutchman’s methods that took place in a shack in Silesia in January.

He assumed that the story would be about another guru with an eye to the main chance, another investigation into the ways in which the gullible can be parted from their money in the name of enlightenment (the week cost Carney and his fellow disciples $ 2,000 each).

His scepticism did not last long. By the end of the week, after a short course in the breathing techniques that Hof demonstrated, and controlled exposure to the winter elements and icy water, Carney felt transformed. Not only could he climb Sněžka in 2ft of snow, but he discovered a kind of elation – and an enormous sense of internal warmth. He was converted.

Frozen assets: (from left) Carney with Wim Hof and a fellow disciple near the summit of Kilimanjaro.

His latest book, What Doesn’t Kill Us, explores the science and the philosophy of Wim Hof’s methods, which promise to unleash dormant “inner fire” by creating the mitochondria-rich tissue – “brown fat” – that is produced when the body is exposed to extreme cold.

By the time Carney met him, Hof had achieved notoriety by running a barefoot marathon in the Arctic and climbing 25,000ft up Everest in his shorts. Carney went on not only to relish the Dutchman’s regime of ice swimming, but also to accompany him in a shirtless climb up Kilimanjaro. The “guru-buster” had been won over by a man who claimed that a few simple physical techniques can promote world peace and “win the war on bacteria”.

But Carney is enthusiastic rather than being easily won over when it comes to Hof’s more grandiose claims. The book is pretty exhaustive in its investigation and he provides anecdotal evidence for Hof’s belief that his regime can improve the lives of those with auto-immune conditions – such as Parkinson’s, Crohn’s disease and rheumatoid arthritis – and this comes with caveats. The biology of the method focuses on the potential of vasoconstriction – the narrowing of blood vessels in response to extreme cold. The philosophy behind it suggests that our bodies – and brains – require exposure to physical extremes to realise what they are capable of.

Speaking to me about his conversion, Carney explains his belief that we have “forgotten” how to access the powers Hof describes. “Our technology has advanced to such a degree that we no longer see ourselves as part of nature,” he says. “But we are just big smart monkeys, right? One of the driving forces in our technological progress has been to try to maximise comfort and convenience – and that has had consequences.”

Whether that progress is thermostatically controlled room temperature, a decent sofa, or easy navigation, the aim, Carney suggests, is to protect ourselves from things that are hard physically and mentally. Without those everyday challenges, he argues, we have undermined our natural biological armoury. The Hof method – which begins with hyperventilation and culminates in lots of ice – is designed to switch on and wake up inbuilt energies, and to trigger immune responses – those same responses that allowed our ancestors to trek across tundra and thrive in unheated caves.

It’s designed to trigger the immune responses that allowed our ancestors to thrive in unheated caves

The idea is seductive, but isn’t Carney wary about evangelising what are potentially dangerous practices? He claims there is some evidence to support Hof’s theory, although it’s not conclusive or wholly supported by science. “There is always the risk that people take these things to extremes,” he says. “Certainly one of my worries about writing this book is that someone might read it and think: ‘Oh my God, I can be immune to the elements!’ and then die on a mountaintop. That is not the message I am pushing…”

He is cautious, too, as he describes the health claims Hof has made, but is clearly personally persuaded. He has moved with his wife to Boulder, Colorado, in the foothills of the Rockies, where he can experience temperature extremes more easily than on the coast. Still, he stops short of describing himself as a “brown fat” disciple. Though he was seduced by Hof’s philosophy, he attempts to balance that with a clear-eyed examination of the Dutchman’s frailties.

Hof comes across as a kind of freaky Spartan, but not a charlatan. “The good thing is that you would never want to be him,” Carney says. “He has a very disorganised life. Kids with different women, alcoholism in his past. He is flawed and human. I feel that if you hang out with him that makes you trust his really good qualities.”

It’s four years since the pair of them first met in Poland and they remain close friends. Carney has kept up his regime. “I had a cold shower this morning, did my 70 push-ups and 15 minutes of breathing exercise with my wife” (who is also a convert). But it is the understanding of the connection between his health and his environment that has changed his life. “I am much more comfortable with being uncomfortable now,” he says. The understanding of extremes provides, he believes, a sense of “physical perspective”. He feels not only healthier, but part of the natural scheme of things. While our fight or flight responses are as likely to be triggered these days by worrying about the mortgage or getting outraged by the internet, he says, contact with the elements reminds us both of our frailty and our strength.

The regime becomes addictive. A cold shower might release a few endorphins, but it is only a gateway drug. Carney craves the sensation of plunging through ice. “Jumping into very cold water and knowing you will feel warm is pretty cool,” he says. He does it as often as he can.

His book links the psychological appeal of the practice to the attractions of punishing obstacle course challenges, such as Tough Mudder. Carney sees not only a health benefit in those challenges, but also the kind of rite of passage that society rarely affords: “The idea used to be ‘a war will make a man of you,’” he says. “An idea that obviously doesn’t do us any favours. With these kinds of disciplines, you are putting yourself in a challenge and proving you can overcome it. There are many benefits of that.”

As an anthropologist, with an interest in eastern religions, I wonder how much he sees it in an ascetic, monastic tradition. Isn’t it just masochism?

“They are related, but they are not the same,” he says. “Ascetics deny the flesh to get closer to God. That is not the heart of this. It is celebrating what our bodies can do. You don’t have to do it all day every day. You can wear a coat sometimes if you want. I am not suggesting you become a cavemen and ditch the internet and forget modern medicine. It is about balance,” he pauses. “But I guess it certainly shows there can be a joy in pain.”

What Doesn’t Kill Us by Scott Carney is published on 11 May by Scribe Publications at £14.99. To order a copy for £12.74, go to bookshop.theguardian.com

Ginger’s life on the street: a battle with people’s disgust, illness … and the cold

For three days he hadn’t slept, at least not properly. The last time he remembered drifting off was before dawn on Tuesday. It was now 1:40pm on Friday, and Ginger was hunched in his sleeping bag on the freezing slab of north London pavement he called home. His resting place was outside a branch of HSBC, metres from Camden Town tube station. There might be more crowded locales in London but few are more frantic. Around him surged crowds of tourists and revellers starting the weekend early. A bunch of Italians took it in turns to take pictures of Ginger, red-eyed and weary, a very modern face of the capital. Others struggled to hide their pity; some looked plainly disgusted.

But it wasn’t the incessant tumult of Camden that had induced Ginger’s most recent bout of insomnia. “It’s the cold. You can’t sleep. You just lie there, freezing. Even when you turn numb, it’s still painful. And someone stole my gloves,” he shook his hands forcefully to mimic his shivers as the temperature fell to -3C last week.

Ginger said the best thing to kill the cold was heroin. “It’s the only thing that makes you feel warm, from the inside. But it’s been so cold, even that hasn’t worked.”

An articulate and incisive character, Ginger is one of Britain’s growing cohort of rough sleepers, among the 960 identified in London last year. Last week government figures showed that the number of rough sleepers in England had risen for the sixth year in a row, up 16% on the previous year, nearly double the number since 2010. Across the country 4,134 people were forced to sleep outside. Ginger describes it as a life of extremes, an existence that brings out the best and the worst of people. “Some people try to bully you, try to pick a fight, some spit at you or shout at you to get a job or get some benefits. Mostly they tend to stick their nose up at you.

“And then a lady will walk by and give you a helping of homemade stew that she’s made especially – that happened yesterday,” he smiles. Considering his profound fatigue, Ginger looks well, although he admits he feels “much older” than his 41 years. The average age of death for rough sleepers is 47. The lowest average life expectancy in the world is in west Africa’s Sierra Leone: 44.4 years.

Ginger, born in upper Clapton, east London, in March 1975, describes his life’s journey as a string of squandered opportunities, bad luck, bad decisions, substance abuse and ultimately the shocking murder of a loved one. His first setback occurred at the age of six and a half. Ginger’s mother walked out on him and his father. He has not spoken to her since. “She didn’t want anything to do with me.” His father, now 67, brought him up single handedly and, according to Ginger, remains supportive.

After leaving school aged 16, Ginger went to live with his uncle in the Irish city of Limerick. There, he fell in love with the outdoors. In the River Shannon he caught his first salmon. He went rabbit hunting in the fields below the Slieve Felim mountains. “I became a keen fisherman, I really took to the life.” But the lure of London drew him back and, aged 19, Ginger found work as a painter and decorator in Camden, making £50 a day cash in hand, a grand a month. “That was big money in those days,” he said. But his disposable income was invested disastrously. Ginger began drinking heavily in Camden pubs like the World’s End – opposite where he now sleeps – or the Camden Head. “The problem was that I was drinking with the wrong crowd.”

Cannabis use rapidly evolved into crack and heroin addiction. His job suffered, his income evaporated. In 2000 Ginger received his first custodial sentence for robbery. For the following eight years life became a blur of prison and heroin use. He served time in Pentonville, Wandsworth and Portland, among others. Amid the chaos, Ginger managed to maintain a seven-year-relationship. He and his partner had two daughters and a son between 2002 and 2006. The family lived in a two-bedroom flat in a yellow tower block behind Euston station. “I had everything I ever wanted. I thought I’d made it.”

But in 2008 the relationship broken down. Ginger went clean but he has not heard from his partner or children since. His loss prompted a period where he tried to build a new life, and Ginger is adamant he would have never ended up on Camden’s streets had it not been for the brutal murder of his Irish uncle in 2015. An intruder attacked and viciously beat the 74-year-old in his Limerick home. “I was asked to go to the funeral but had to say no. I couldn’t bear to see him in the open coffin. I wanted to remember him as he was,” said Ginger, still visibly grief-stricken. Heroin anaesthetised the pain. By the summer of 2016 Ginger had lost everything and was a rough sleeper. “Once you’re back on the heroin, it’s hard to get straight,” he said, describing his current heroin intake as “dabbling”.

Spice – synthetic cannabis – is the narcotic of choice among Camden’s rough sleepers now. “Everyone’s on it. It just knocks you out,” said Ginger. Last May the government made spice illegal, and the only people to benefit have been the dealers. Before then, Ginger could procure five grams for £25 from a local shop. Now dealers cut the substance and charge £10 for half a gram.

Camden could be a violent place for a rough sleeper, he said. He is wary of the surrounding streets, recounting a drunken night in 2003 when he got into a mindless squabble with a stranger in a nearby alley. They began fighting. Initially Ginger thought his assailant had punched him in the leg. “Then I realised I’d been stabbed. You live in fear that that can happen at any time.”

Ginger also admitted that he was a danger to himself. In 2008 he was taken to St Pancras hospital in handcuffs after a psychotic episode. Once there, he sliced himself open with a craft knife he had hidden in his pants. Yanking up his jacket, he reveals two parallel lines of knotted scar tissue 30cm long, running across his lower stomach. “It was the voices that told me to do it.” He was diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic and currently receives a fortnightly injection to control his condition. Research by charity St Mungo’s shows that four in 10 people who sleep rough have a mental health problem.

But street life is not unswervingly bleak. Ginger’s survival relies on daily acts of unsolicited generosity. “Some people sit down for a chinwag and ask how I am. Others give me money, even 20p, for which I’m always grateful. People bring sandwiches or visit a local shop to buy me lunch, and local restaurants often bring leftover meals.”

Staff from the McDonald’s on Camden High Street bring over a quarterpounder with cheese, Ginger’s favourite. If not, there is the nearby soup kitchen which, in a sign of the times, can “become very crowded”.

Ginger talks fondly of his fellow rough sleepers, how they will defend each other if attacked or from new faces they don’t trust. In the past Ginger has befriended strangers and woken up without his shoelaces. Even so, rough sleeping is fundamentally wearying. Days begin around 5am, when the city starts waking up, and Ginger says he can only fully relax after 3am when Camden’s nightlife fades. His alternative “homes” – a doorway close to the American Apparel store across the high street and an alley behind the World’s End – are hardly more peaceful.

Ginger often thinks of the day he’ll be able to leave Camden’s streets. Like all rough sleepers his primary ambition is a permanent home. Without an address, securing a job and saving money is almost impossible.

But Ginger is also scared that he’ll never fully conquer the internal voices that he said prevented him from moving forward. “The medication is working in the sense that I can only hear mumbling. I can’t quite make out the voices but they are there, coming from behind my back. If they stop, I’ll be able to think more clearly.”

HOMELESSNESS FACTFILE

Using a different methodology to the government figures, the Combined Homelessness and Information Network, found that 8,096 people slept rough at some point in London during 2015/16, an increase of 7% one the previous year.

Of these, 5,276 people were new rough sleepers.

85% were male, with the proportion of women rising slightly over the last two years by 1%

Many rough sleepers have pressing support needs: 43% have alcohol problems; 31% have drug addictions and 46% mental health issues. The proportion of rough sleepers with no support needs is around a quarter.

A third of people seen rough sleeping in 2015/16 had served time in prison, while one in 10 had experience of the care system. Eight per cent had been in the armed forces.

Where nationality was recorded, 3,271 people rough-sleeping were UK nationals – 41% of the total.

"Cold does kill": plunging UK temperatures prompt health warning

Low temperatures heralding the arrival of winter have prompted health officials to stress that cold weather can be fatal.

A widespread frost is expected and a new survey of highways bosses shows that councils have stockpiled 1.2m tonnes of salt to prepare for the months ahead.

Public Health England is advising people to prepare for the chilly snap, warning that “cold does kill”.

On Monday night most of England will see temperatures fall to -4C (24.8F), with London experiencing a potential low of -3C (26.6F).

A low of -5C (23F) is forecast for Scotland – but rural areas are likely to be even colder – while Northern Ireland will face temperatures of 0C (32F), with rural areas similarly expected to plummet lower.

Dr Angie Bone, from the extreme events team at PHE, said: “Cold does kill, even in places where the temperatures aren’t at their lowest. Now is the time to prepare for the cold weather forecast by the Met Office, and to think of those you know who are older, very young, or have pre-existing health conditions who are particularly vulnerable.”

Andy Page, the chief operational meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “High pressure will bring generally dry and settled conditions this week, with clear skies and light winds allowing a widespread frost to occur on Monday and Tuesday night.

“From Wednesday onwards, cloudier and slightly less cold conditions will arrive across northern England, therefore overnight frosts will become fewer and less severe in the north but cold weather may persist across the south where skies remain clearer.

“Looking ahead into December and beyond, there are indications that a cold start to winter is more likely than normal, but this doesn’t guarantee snow nor does it mean we won’t see spells of mild and wet weather at times.”

Meanwhile, the Local Government Association (LGA) annual winter readiness survey shows councils are well prepared for plummeting temperatures with a substantial stock of grit.

About half are at the limit of storage capacity, and the LGA said gritters will be out treating thousands of miles of roads whenever overnight temperatures drop below zero in the coming days.

Councillor Martin Tett, the LGA’s transport spokesman, said: “Councils are fully prepared to protect residents and minimise disruption … caused by the drop in temperatures. They are constantly monitoring up-to-the-minute weather reports to make sure they can stay one step ahead of the weather.

“We are well prepared for the cold, with 1.2m tonnes of salt stockpiled and a fleet of state-of-the-art gritters ready to be deployed.”

1 December marks the beginning of meteorological winter, which lasts until 1 February.

How to use your brain power to fight off a cold

At this time of year, it feels like people are constantly warning you they are “coming down” with a cold. But if I have a slightly sore throat or a runny nose, I always try to say that I am “fighting off” the virus instead.

Because the nervous system runs from the brain into every organ of the body, what we believe can have a powerful effect on how we respond to illness. Neuroscientists are still trying to work out the specific mechanism behind this link, but the placebo effect is still regularly proven to be one of the strongest medical responses there is.

Here’s one extraordinary example: researchers got ethical permission to experiment on people who needed different kinds of knee surgery. They put them all under a general anaesthetic and made an incision in their knee.

Then half of them underwent surgery and the other half didn’t – their knee was stitched up exactly as it had been, instead. The placebo effect was so powerful that for some kinds of knee injury, the group who had an incision but did not have the surgery recovered just as well as those who’d had the whole package.

How To Get Over A Cold Fast With These Sure-Fire Ways

“Mommy, I don’t feel so good.” Have you heard those words lately?

If you haven’t, then you’re one of the lucky ones because it’s cold and flu season. Dripping sniffles, raspy coughs, and projectile sneezes are common this time of year. If your child is sick, wouldn’t it be nice to know how to get over a cold fast?

Is there anything you can do to lessen the severity and shorten the duration of a cold or flu? The answer is yes!

But first things first. Timing is crucial.

Your child is sick because a virus or bacteria has penetrated their system.

If you want to try something, do it at the first sign of a cold or flu. You are more likely to prevent microbes from disabling their immune system.

Try these safe, natural ways to help shorten the duration of a cold or flu. These strategies work for Mom and Dad too!

How To Get Over A Cold Fast: 6 Sure-Fire Ways

1. Remove All Sugar From Their Diet

Sugar cripples the immune system for approximately three hours after eating it. Sugary drinks or foods prevent the immune system from doing its job to fight off the infection.

Research from the University of California shows how dramatic sugar impacts our immune system. Students were placed on a regimented sugar-free diet. Then they were given sugar. Their metabolic markers for disease and chronic conditions spiked for hours afterward.

When your child is coming down with a cold or flu, they need all the help they can get. Their bodies need to combat the germs. Don’t disable their immune system by giving them sugar!

2. Hydrogen Peroxide In The Ears

Most colds are due to bacterial infections. For bacteria to survive, they must enter a host to prey on. The common orifice that microbes enter the body is through the eyes, nose, mouth, and ears.

Hydrogen Peroxide (H202) is a safe way to fight infection. It’s a natural way to disable bacteria and neutralize germs. That is why it is used to treat a wide variety of common illnesses.

Administer a few drops of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide into the ear. It will work at once. It is a safe way to kill off the bacteria. Many people swear by this method to shorten the duration of colds.

To use hydrogen peroxide, place your child’s head on a pillow with one ear facing up. Place three drops of hydrogen peroxide in the ear. It’s normal for your child to hear crackling noises. Wait a few minutes and put a towel next to the ear as they get up. Let the few drops from the ears drip onto the towel.

Then repeat for the other ear. Do this every few hours until they feel better.

3. Let The Fever Do Its Job

Fevers are our natural defense against infectious agents. A fever makes the body less favorable to viruses and bacteria to replicate.

Our grandparents knew this. But somewhere along the line, Mom’s believed a fever was dangerous for their child. So they would immediately try to lower it.

Reducing your temperature with medicines, hinders the body’s ability to fight off the infections. A better strategy to combat the infection is to raise the temperature. Or at least, leave the fever alone so it can do its job.

The thing to remember is that fevers are rarely dangerous. A fever would have to exceed 105 or 106 degrees to cause concern. If this happens, consult your doctor and put a cool compress on your child’s forehead.

Have you heard of The Artificial Fever? I’ve done this on my children when they were sick, and it worked to shorten the duration of their cold. I would give them a short, warm bath and bundle them up in blankets after to heat their body. For adults, you can even drink a cup of tea while in the bath to spike the fever.

Another benefit of not lowering the fever is your child will get some much-needed rest. By reducing the fever with medications, your child will feel better and begin to play. But the body is still working to fight off the illness. So not getting the rest they need is detrimental to healing.

4. Starve A Cold And Fever

A sick child is a tired child. There is a reason for that. Their bodies are hard at work fighting the infection.

If you give your child something difficult to digest, it expends a lot of much-needed energy. Things like beef stew, pizza, or a six-course meal need resources to digest the food. Resources which would be better allocated to fighting off the infection.

Instead, keep food away from your child if they are not asking to eat. If they get hungry, give them something simple to eat like an orange or broth. The broth is much more soothing and will help them overcome their illness quicker.

5. Take Your Immune Boosters

As a manufacturer of one of the best immune boosters on the market, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention my all natural cough syrup.

I get so many testimonials from Mom’s who say their child not only slept better after taking my cough syrup, but they felt better!

That’s why I add ten immune boosting ingredients to every spoonful. To get you feeling better, faster. Since it’s all natural, you have nothing to lose in giving it to your child at the first sign of the sniffles.

6. Make A Garlic Cocktail

Garlic has a sulfur compound called Allicin. Allicin is a potent antimicrobial agent. The most efficient way to get garlic into your system is by crushing it and placing it under your tongue. But, with its strong taste and smell, it’s one of the most challenging ways to give it to a child.

Try mixing the garlic with Maty’s Cough Syrup in a food processor. Since the main ingredient in Maty’s is honey, it masks the flavor of the garlic.

Another way is to prepare broth and make a garlic soup. Add antimicrobial spices like thyme, oregano or sage, and minced garlic. A pinch of sea salt might be good as well. (Note: Add the garlic five minutes before the end of cooking to preserve the nutrients.)

So, next time your child shows the first sign of a cold or flu, try these natural, sure-fire strategies and get them over a cold fast!

Get the jab and don’t worry about kissing: how to avoid cold and flu

Colds and flu may seem trivial, but for some they can be incapacitating or even life-threatening. The terms cover a group of respiratory illnesses caused by three influenza viruses and more than 200 common-cold viruses. They are more prevalent in the winter because we huddle close to people who are harbouring the viruses, and because cold air affects the nose’s ability to fight infection. Here is everything you need to know to stay healthy this winter …

My boss said that if I can stand up, it’s not flu. Is this true?

Your boss may not be objective or, indeed, correct. But the general point is that flu comes on more suddenly, feels worse and lasts longer than a cold. It causes a sudden high temperature, shivering, deep tiredness, weakness and aching muscles. Other symptoms are similar to those of a cold, such as a sore throat, a dry cough and a runny nose. Kids can experience stomach aches, diarrhoea and vomiting.

I get that flu is nasty, but it passes. Why all the fuss?

There are three types of flu: type A is the most dangerous and can cause worldwide outbreaks (pandemics); type B makes people feel ill; and type C is relatively mild. On average, flu kills 600 people a year in the UK; in bad years, that figure can rise to thousands. Most people make a full recovery, but serious complications, such as pneumonia, can affect anyone, especially babies, pregnant women, those with long-term medical problems and older people whose immune systems are impaired.

Should I get a flu jab?

There are a few ways to avoid flu: stay away from other people; wage war against flu spreaders who leave their snotty tissues lying around; or get a jab. Two vaccines are available in the UK. The nasal flu vaccine is being rolled out gradually to all children over the age of two, while the inactivated flu vaccine is offered on the NHS to vulnerable adults (over-65s, pregnant women, those with serious medical conditions such as asthma, plus care-home residents, carers and healthcare professionals). If you are not in a vulnerable group, you can get the jab privately – many pharmacists and workplaces offer it for a small charge. Babies under six months old are too young to be vaccinated against flu, but pregnant women are encouraged to have the jab to protect themselves and their newborn babies. Children are vaccinated partly to protect them, but also because they are walking virus reservoirs – they remain infectious for two weeks longer than adults and are more likely to pass on the virus.

Can I get flu from the jab?

No. It contains inactivated virus, so you may feel a bit shivery and your arm may ache, but it’s nothing that a couple of paracetamol won’t sort out. Allergic reactions are rare, but potentially dangerous. There was a small rise in reported cases of the neurological condition Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) among people who had a swine flu vaccine in 1976, but it’s not clear why. If there is an increased risk of GBS after flu vaccines, the chance is still only about one in a million.

Is swine flu still a thing?

Swine flu – so-called because pigs get a similar virus – was a relatively new strain of flu that caused a pandemic in 2009-10. It has been around for a while now, so lots of people have immunity and it’s part of the annual flu vaccine. It caused far fewer serious cases than expected, since many older people had been exposed to the strain in their youth and had retained some immunity.

What about Tamiflu?

The antiviral drugs oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and zanamivir (Relenza) were doled out by the bucketload during the swine flu scare. Questions remain about their effectiveness. Professor Stuart Pocock of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, a co-author of an extensive analysis of the evidence, says: “There is some shortening of duration of flu symptoms (by about 24 hours) and a reduction in the risk of lower respiratory complications. This needs to be set against an increased risk of nausea and vomiting.” The drugs don’t prevent flu, but can mitigate its severity once you develop it. A report by the Academy of Medical Sciences and the Wellcome Trust in October 2015 said that pregnant women who are hospitalised with flu should be given the treatment and that clinicians should weigh up the pros and cons of treating children and those in high-risk groups. If a particularly virulent strain of flu comes along, offering antivirals widely may be justified. Until then, it isn’t.

Is it true that the nasal spray for children doesn’t work?

Recent US data showed that the nasal flu vaccine wasn’t very effective from 2013-16 overall and seemed to give little or no added protection in the winter of 2015 in children aged 2 to 17. In the UK, the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation has reviewed the evidence from the UK, the US, Finland and Canada; it says there is evidence of good overall effectiveness and that children should continue to use the nasal spray.

Why didn’t the flu vaccine work for me last year?

Some years it will be more effective than others. Partly, it depends on you. One year, you may be in rude health and not mix much with ill people; another, you may be run down and unlucky. Another factor is the vaccine: every year, 143 national flu centres in 113 countries monitor current and emerging strains of flu virus and test existing vaccines on them. The results are passed on to six World Health Organisation centres (two in the US and one each in the UK, Australia, Japan and China), which meet to recommend the composition of the vaccine for the northern and southern hemispheres. It’s a good system, but sometimes the experts are flummoxed by a rogue strain.

I’ll be all right – I take echinacea and vitamin C all winter

Hopefully, you will be fine, but it may not be due to the products you are taking. Echinacea is enthusiastically marketed to prevent and treat colds – the US market alone is worth more than $ 28m – but the evidence shows a modest benefit at best and certainly doesn’t justify the commercial claims. High-dose vitamin C (1,000-2,000mg/day), garlic, exercise and homeopathy don’t prevent colds, either. In fact, pregnant women and people with impaired kidney function are advised to avoid vitamin C supplements; a normal, balanced diet provides plenty of vitamin C.

What can I take for my cold?

Professor Bruce Arroll of the University of Auckland says: “There is no effective treatment for the common cold, but there are treatments that can help with the symptoms. The evidence is not great for anything except ipratropium nasal spray (Rinatec). There is no role for antibiotics for the cold or respiratory symptoms (when there is no diagnosis of pneumonia or emphysema).”

Many studies are poorly designed, conflicting or inconclusive, but it seems that honey may help a cough. Nasal saline and humidified air may be helpful for sleep and are unlikely to cause any harm. Chinese medicinal herbs, ginseng, echinacea and vitamin C don’t appear to offer any benefit. Ibuprofen helps aches and pains and reduces fever more effectively than paracetamol, especially in children. There is no benefit in taking paracetamol and ibuprofen together, despite the fact they are often sold in combination. Arroll adds: “Nasal and oral decongestants are probably effective and worth trying if [you are] very congested. Vicks is also worth trying, based on one study.”

My partner has a stinking cold. Should I decamp to the couch?

Cold viruses are not as infectious as you might think. An infected person can spread their virus by coughing or sneezing close to you or touching a door handle with their virus-infested hands. But you can kiss and have sex with your infected partner without running a high risk of catching the virus, although why you would want to beats me.

Council cuts push specialist housing for vulnerable people into the cold

Last November, housing staff at one housing association were confronted with a tenant claiming to have a bomb in his bag; in another incident, an officer from another housing provider claimed to have been held hostage by a man who believed there was an alien outside his home.

In both incidents, the tenants involved had mental health issues. Housing providers are concerned that growing numbers of tenants with mental health issues are ending up in general needs housing, where they do not receive the help provided in specialist supported housing. A recent survey by Inside Housing reveals a 14% fall in spending by councils on people with mental health issues in supported housing since 2011–12, based on 250 English councils that responded to Freedom of Information requests,

Between 2011 and 2017 there will have been a drop of nearly £7.3m in spend on people with mental health in supported housing by the 47 councils in England that responded fully to the survey. In 2011–12, those councils’ combined budget, including both commissioned services and those they pay for directly, was £50.9m; this year’s budget is £43.6m.

This squeeze on council spending has put pressure on other housing providers, including housing associations. “We have noticed councils are seeking to reduce the amount of specialist accommodation they procure for adults with mental illness,” says Alex Reeve, regional director of London supported housing at housing association Family Mosaic.

Supported housing has been operating within a constricted funding environment for years. Supporting People funding – a national programme for housing related support made available to councils in England – dropped from £1.8bn when it started in 2003 to £1.6bn in 2014–15. That equates to a 38% fall in real terms.

Ministers have given supported housing a one-year exemption from the 1% rent reduction announced in last year’s summer budget, while in September the government said it would transfer top-up money to councils for the service to counter its planned housing benefit cap.

But supported housing providers say the threat of funding cuts has already affected business. Among the 250 councils that responded at least in part to Inside Housing’s FOI requests, there is a wide range of provision for tenants with mental health conditions: some have specialist units, some do not; a handful have floating support for their general needs stock, most do not; others have budgets for specific conditions – such as hoarding – while others have no housing budget at all allocated to people with mental health needs

Chris Hampson, chief executive of Look Ahead, which provides care, support and housing services across London and the south-east, says councils are cutting back on supporting those with less serious mental health issues to concentrate on those with more acute needs. “A lot of the preventative services have been cut back,” says Hampson, who believes further cuts are to come.

This, he says, is short-sighted: “If you take money out of the lower-end preventative services, in the long run more money is spent because people end up back on the streets or in hospital.”

Richard Colwill, media manager at mental health charity Sane, says the FOI results show the budgetary crisis across the board for mental health provision, which is of deep concern for the charity. “Mental health has always been a ‘Cinderella service’,” he explains, and cuts to services are a false economy: if what initially appears to be a tenancy problem is not addressed early, it can develop into a much more complex issue and they can find themselves supporting a customer experiencing mental health issues. “Care in the community only works if there is provision for people in the community,” he says. “Housing is a really big issue for us. Losing a home or being in fear of losing your home can be a trigger to push someone into crisis.”

While most councils have cut spending on mental health in supported accommodation, the FOI responses reveal some exceptions. In 2016–17 Ealing spent £1.6m on mental health in supported housing, up from £1.2m in 2011–12. “We recognise the benefits of supported living in enabling people to live as independently as possible in the borough while getting appropriate care from professionals,” a spokesperson for Ealing says. “We also find that supporting people to live in the local area near to family and friends can have a positive impact on their well-being.”

In Yorkshire, Wakefield council is another bucking the trend, with its supported housing mental health budget growing 15% in the past five years. It is also developing an innovative strategy to address the issue. Wakefield and District Housing has partnered with NHS Wakefield Clinical Commissioning Group to employ mental health support workers to work with tenants. The council, which still manages the local housing register, can give applicants with mental health needs extra priority. Jon Feasey, a service manager for vulnerable adults at Wakefield Council, says the council sees tackling mental health as an important frontline service. “It has a preventative outcome that can create real efficiencies by preventing homelessness.”

Feasey believes the right place for people with mental health needs is in the community but that people need support in their homes – including those with less acute mental health needs who can slip through the net. As well as preventing homelessness, the support can also help reduce unplanned hospital admissions, he says.

Sleeping In A Cold Room: Why Everyone Should Do This

Sleep is a vital health determinant. It is the time when the body relaxes from all the strains of daily activities and gets a chance to attend to itself. This is also the time for repair, healing, and recovery.

The body greatly benefits from a good night’s sleep. Recent studies have uncovered more benefits of sleeping in the cold.

Brown fat and sleeping in the cold

Research has shown that sleeping in a cold environment stimulates the formation of more brown fats. This is the healthiest type of fat in the body, unlike the more abundant white fats.

Brown fat is considered as metabolically active. That means the body has more use for it. The transformation of brown fats leads to more energy consumption and increased metabolic rates that last throughout the day.

Brown fat is previously believed to be only present in babies. Recent research found that there is a small amount present in adults. There is about 1 teaspoon-sized brown fat in the upper back and neck area. According to studies, this amount of brown fat can be increased.

Having more brown fat is more advantageous than having white fat. It aids with better weight management and better health. Brown fats promote burning more calories and more efficient use of energy. This fat also helps in better regulation of the metabolic process that can lead to better insulin and blood sugar controls.

Sleeping in a cold environment has been shown to encourage the formation and storage of brown fats.

Better sleep quality

The body is continually regulating its own temperature. During an entire 24-hour period, body temperature fluctuates. It typically reaches its highest level around the early afternoon. The lowest is around 5 AM.

During sleep, body temperature tends to go down as the body cools off and becomes less active. As the body cools down, it relaxes and soon, sleep comes. When the environment is cooler, the body can relax sooner and sleep quality improves.

In a cooler environment, the body is not required to keep regulating temperatures. This will significantly reduce tossing and turning at night looking for a comfortable position and stable temperature. This will promote a more restorative, deeper kind of sleep.

Recent studies also found that a cold sleeping environment is beneficial in managing insomnia. People tend to sleep sooner and longer in a cold environment compared to sleeping in a warm environment.

Other benefits of sleeping in the cold

Aside from better fat profile and sleep quality, here are a few more reasons for sleeping in a cold environment:

  • Look younger

More melatonin is released during sleep when in a cold environment. Melatonin is an important anti-aging hormone that helps achieve a more youthful appearance.

  • Reduce risks for metabolic diseases

Brown fat formation has been demonstrated to promote better energy usage and calorie burning. This can help in better insulin response and reduction in the risk for diabetes and other metabolic diseases.

Try sleeping in a cold room tonight and see the benefits. In a few days, health benefits like better energy will be observed.

"Feed a cold, starve a fever" could be right, scientists find

The traditional advice to “feed a cold and starve a fever” might have an element of truth, say scientists.

Research shows that the old adage appears to be based on sound science when a fever is caused by bacterial infection.

Scientists put the folk wisdom to the test using laboratory mice with bacterial and viral infections. They found that mice with flu – like the common cold, caused by a virus – were helped to recover and survive when they were fed. In contrast, feeding animals infected by bacteria only hastened their death.

The lead researcher Prof Ruslan Medzhitov, of the Yale School of Medicine in the US, said: “We were surprised at how profound the effects of feeding were, both positive and negative.

“Anorexia – not eating – is a common behaviour during sickness that is seen in people and all kinds of animals. Our findings show that it has a strong protective effect with certain infections, but not with others.”

In the first of a series of experiments, mice were infected with listeria bacteria, a common cause of food poisoning. The animals stopped eating naturally, and eventually recovered. However, when they were made to eat, they died.

Sugary food was the culprit, the researchers discovered – the mice survived when they were fed protein and fats but no glucose.

A similar study of mice infected with the flu virus showed an opposite effect. In this case, the mice lived when they were force-fed glucose, but died when they were denied food.

Giving the animals a drug called 2-DG, which prevents glucose metabolism, saved the listeria-infected mice but proved fatal to those with flu.

Further research indicated that the different outcomes related to an interplay between metabolism and the immune system.

“Almost everything we know about infection is based on immune response studies and looking at how the immune system eliminates pathogens (harmful agents),” said Medzhitov. “But that’s not the only way we defend ourselves. There are also cases where we change and adapt so that microbes don’t cause harm.

“Our study manipulated the ability of these mice to tolerate and survive infection without doing anything that had an effect on the pathogens themselves.”

His team is now looking at how changes in sleep behaviour during illness influence the way the immune system fights infection.

The researchers also want to investigate why people sometimes display food cravings when they are sick.

The findings, published in the journal Cell, have implications for the design of clinical trials evaluating the benefits of nutrition to patients with sepsis, say the scientists.

Sepsis is a life-threatening condition caused by a response to infection that damages the body’s tissues and organs.

Medzhitov said: “Sepsis is a critical problem in hospital ICUs [intensive care units] that defies most modern medical approaches. A number of studies have looked at nutrition in patients with sepsis, and the results have been mixed. But these studies didn’t segregate patients based on whether their sepsis was bacterial or viral.

“The implication is that patients should be stratified by the cause of their sepsis, and trials should be designed based on that.”

Vampire facials - the cold facts

The easy vampire facial, or Platelet Wealthy Plasma (PRP), is, by contrast, a stroll in the park (or by means of the graveyard if you favor), says Dr Loong.

The procedure entails extracting a couple of dessert spoons of the patient’s blood from their arm and spinning it in a centrifuge to separate the plasma – the fluid portion – from the red and white blood cells. The concentrated plasma, which is wealthy in platelets – the part of the blood with development variables – is then injected into the encounter. Some practitioners mix it with dermal fillers to additional plump up dilemma areas, such as beneath the eye.

The fundamental PRP therapy has been used for practically 20 years to accelerate the healing of wounds and burnt skin, and support athletes – which includes, reportedly, tennis ace Rafael Nadal – recover from injury. But it was when Dr Charles Runels from Alabama trademarked the title “Vampire Facelift” in 2010, for the duration of the craze for the Vampire Diaries and Twilight Saga, that the method became sexy for A-listers.

Barely a week goes by with no a celebrity this kind of as model Bar Refaeli posting an Instagram picture of herself having the treatment. The godmother of vampire facials is socialite Kim Kardashian, but even our personal sweet-faced Anna Friel has reportedly succumbed to the trend.

Dr Loong says there is high demand for PRP shots among London’s well-preserved set, and clients need to have only a spare lunch hour in which to have it done, using neighborhood anaesthetic.

“I do among 3 and five procedures a week, and it only requires 30 to 45 minutes. Because it is your personal plasma we are injecting, the risk of infection or allergic reaction is extremely reduced. It is a needle treatment, so there could be a little bruising or soreness.”

The recommended dosage is three sessions, four weeks apart, and then after a 12 months for servicing. At £600 a session, this will set you back £2,000. But not every person is convinced. Miles Berry, a consultant plastic surgeon at Cosmetic Surgery Partners, London, says: “The method has a temporary impact through swelling, but there is as however no scientific proof of any prolonged-term improvements to the skin.”

Gimmick or godsend? You make a decision – but hold that clove of garlic nearby, just in case.

Gasoline guy should be skilled to spot elderly at risk of dying from cold, says overall health watchdog

The suggestions contain a “one cease” well being and housing referral services offered to people who reside in cold residences, which give entry to housing insulation and heating, far more affordable fuel choices and tips.

Meanwhile, health and social care employees should do a lot more to determine people at chance. They should also guarantee that vulnerable hospital patients are not discharged to a cold residence.

Professor Mike Kelly, director of the Centre for Public Well being at Great, stated: “Even though most triggers of death and sickness differ all through the seasons, there is a clear boost during winter months.

“About 24,000 extra folks die during this time every 12 months in England and Wales, primarily from cardiovascular and respiratory conditions. This is not just about intense cold weather, but normal winter temperatures – when outside temperatures drop beneath 6C.

“Companies to make sure people are warm ample at residence currently exist, but they are patchy across the country, and this lack of consistency tends to make it really challenging for pros to know what help is available locally and how to get aid for people who need to have it.

“This new draft guideline aims to assist reduce these preventable deaths and unwell health. Recommendations incorporate identifying individuals at danger, making sure that a referral can be produced for insulation or heating enhancements if necessary and raising awareness of neighborhood systems and services to support individuals who are living in properties that are as well cold.

“Folks want to be conscious of how the cold influences their well being and exactly where they can look for help if they want it.”

A second trial, due to commence in June, will be targeted at children who have Lower Respiratory Tract Infection or asthma – conditions exacerbated by cold, draughty homes – and are in fuel poverty.

The trials are being carried out by Gentoo, a social business and social housing provider, but are not targeted at its own housing stock. Measures on offer include double glazing, installing energy efficient boilers and loft of wall insulation.

Dr Nonnie Crawford, Sunderland’s director of public health, said: “We are hoping to establish the impacts a warm home has on patients who have conditions we know are exacerbated by living in a cold environment. We want to enhance the quality of life for people with long-term conditions and prevent unnecessary and avoidable discomfort.”

Dr Tim Ballard, Vice Chair Royal College of General Practitioners, said: “Investing in fuel-efficient boilers and home insulation for high risk populations leads to a better home environment, improved management of long term conditions and a decrease in hospital admissions.

“Fuel poverty is also addressed, empowering individuals to afford a better diet and quality of life. Finally there is the overall reduction in CO2 emissions. What is there not to like?”

Vaccine improvement: thinking out of the cold box

Immunisation is widely accepted to be 1 of the excellent public overall health successes of recent decades, contributing to a substantial fall in kid mortality close to the world. Yet, each 12 months, 22 million kids fail to get completely vaccinated, leaving them vulnerable to deadly diseases.

The consequences of this vaccination failure are costly, the two in terms of youthful lives misplaced unnecessarily and in terms of pricey emergency public overall health interventions needed to respond to outbreaks of communicable ailment – interventions that cost millions of euros.

One particular substantial element behind this failure is the vaccines themselves and their lack of suitability for the settings with the weakest wellness techniques. For the past thirty many years, the variety 1 rule has been that all vaccines need to have to be kept amongst two and 8C correct up to the stage of delivery, a method identified as the ‘cold chain’. In nations with unreliable electrical energy supplies, poor transport hyperlinks, remote communities and large temperatures, the logistical problems are apparent and too usually go unmet.

Of program more interest, and money, require to be paid in the direction of strengthening logistics and cold chain methods in these poorer countries, but we also need a lot more action from the vaccine companies to decide the true thermostability of vaccines, and a regulatory framework that acknowledges and expedites this actuality. This would enable wider use of a more versatile cold chain, frequently described as a ‘controlled temperature chain’, or CTC, in which some vaccines are able to be securely kept unrefrigerated for specified periods of time. The fiscal rewards can be large – in one study in Chad, keeping vaccines in a CTC, rather than in a conventional cold chain, halved the cost of reaching each and every patient.

There is an rising physique of scientific proof that numerous current vaccines are in fact a great deal a lot more heat-stable than their labelling suggests and can stay powerful in spite of getting exposed to warmer temperatures. Scientific scientific studies conducted by MSF in 2013, for instance, demonstrated that the Serum Institute of India’s tetanus toxoid vaccine remains efficacious in spite of getting exposed to temperatures of up to 40C for 30 days. Other well being organisations, such as the Programme for Suitable Technological innovation in Health (Path) and WHO, are starting to compile this information.

Nevertheless even the place there is firm proof that vaccines are significantly heat-stable, makers are dragging their feet more than relabelling and relicensing their vaccines. The regulatory procedure essential to do so is unclear and possibly time consuming. At present, there is just no incentive for firms such as Pfizer or GlaxoSmithKline to bother with the expense and hassle of relicensing a vaccine for CTC use. Alas WHO, which is not itself a regulatory body, cannot approve or recommend new storage conditions beyond individuals set out by the medicine regulatory agency in the nation of manufacture.

In the meantime, some organisations are tackling the problem head-on themselves. WHO in the western Pacific region noticed the require to improve coverage charges of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccine at birth and advised that midwives and birth attendants working in communities not equipped with electrical energy be allowed to keep the HBV vaccine for up to thirty days at ambient temperatures under 40C. This has been credited with helping to improve HBV birth dose coverage in the region, despite the fact that a much more formal relicensing of the vaccine is still needed.

In the long term, the next generation of vaccines must be produced with ambitious heat stability targets so that burdensome cold chain needs can be avoided from the outset. A good example is MenAfriVac for meningitis. A vaccine produced specifically for the sub-Saharan Africa meningitis belt, at the moment the only vaccine recommended by WHO for use in a CTC. MenAfriVac can be employed for up to 4 days outdoors the cold chain in ambient temperatures of up to 40C.

As a public wellness local community, we know what demands to be done. Pharmaceutical organizations require to label vaccines to reflect their accurate heat stability and to invest in ensuring that new vaccines are as heat-steady as feasible. WHO, with the support of national governments and their regulatory companies, must clarify the pathway to employing vaccines outdoors the strict cold chain. We need to have to offer overall health workers with the equipment they want to efficiently run vaccination programmes in resource-poor settings. If we do this, we will conserve income and assets, whilst making sure far more young children survive. Surely its an work worth making.
