Diet has a vital role to play in dealing with the menopause | Letters

While I applaud publicising and myth-busting the menopause (“I just coped, as others do: breaking the silence about the menopause”, In Focus), I am sorry that nowhere in the article did you mention diet as a means of dealing with menopausal side-effects.

The beginning of my menopause was a nightly sheet-wringing affair and daily having to pull over in the car to urgently strip off before I melted. About that time, I exchanged meat and dairy products for tofu and soya milk alternatives. Soon afterwards, the sweats subsided, then stopped. I thought I was one of the lucky ones, but I then learned that an oriental diet, low in meat and dairy and high in soya, which contains phytoestrogens, was the more likely reason. Menopause is not an illness, it’s a fact of life, and the reaction to administer drugs to treat the symptoms is sad.

In the early days of my transition, I found that suddenly stripping off in public places for an impending hot flush was best dealt with an: “Excuse me, I’m having a menopausal!” and laughing. Since laughing is infectious, everyone laughed with me (albeit sometimes nervously).

Nazis knew the BBC’s power

There has never been much doubt about the integrity and quality of the BBC’s wartime broadcasts to Nazi Germany. Their significance for that nebulous entity, “the German people”, is less certain (“How the BBC’s truth offensive beat Hitler’s propaganda machine”, News).

Nazi propaganda succeeded in seducing huge sections of the German population, especially among the young, while a draconian law passed at the outbreak of the war imposed such heavy penalties on listeners to foreign broadcasts, including capital punishment for passing on such information, that it was likely to discourage all but the most intrepid anti-Nazi.

Its most consistent and attentive listener was Hitler’s minister of information, Joseph Goebbels, who, sensing the potential danger, refused even high-ranking Nazi colleagues permission to listen to the BBC. Nazi terror ensured that even in the last stages of a clearly lost war “the German people” would stage no uprisings against their moribund overlords.

The BBC’s German Service failed in its mission to enlighten the misguided “German people”. The listeners to this splendid service were people like my Nazi-hating mother, who took huge comfort from the knowledge that beyond the confines of their now so deadly country was another world that cared and would fight to overcome the evil that gripped Germany.

Heavy weather, Nick

It seems that whatever Nick Cohen writes about, he has set himself the task of inserting at least one gratuitous swipe at the left wing of the Labour party. If he was asked to write the Observer’s weather forecast, he’d probably find a way of blaming them for every approaching thunderstorm.

Last week, for instance, writing about George Soros and the Hungarian government, he managed to contrive a reference to what he described as “the Labour left’s claim that Hitler was a Zionist”. That’s quite a sweeping, damaging accusation, apparently aimed at the whole of the Labour left. Yet the recent crude, insensitive and provocative suggestion by Ken Livingstone that Hitler “was supporting Zionism” was widely condemned by Jeremy Corbyn, John McDonnell and most of that very same “Labour left”.

MacKenzie is his own nemesis

I agree with Barbara Ellen’s piece “Read all about it. MacKenzie is no man of the people” (Comment). However, I would go further as Kelvin MacKenzie displays the classic symptoms of addictive behaviour, whereby someone has compulsive patterns of behaviour and cannot help themselves.

MacKenzie has made a few of these ill-advised stands, making ridiculous pronouncements since his terrible stance on Hillsborough and one has to have some compassion for the man who is on a self-destruct mission. These desperate attempts to keep himself in the frame are another form of attention-seeking. Of course, the management of the Sun should have put themselves, any sub-editors, the editor and any journalists party to the piece before publication on gardening leave immediately, without waiting to see the reaction.

Enough of this codswallop

Your business leader column on corporate speak reminded me that it is not only the corporate world that suffers from meaningless jargon intended to fool the listener/reader into believing that something meaningful has been uttered.

Corporate speak is spoken by those who wish to exclude from their conversations those who are not deemed suitable to be admitted to their heady heights. Nowhere is this more manifest than in the corridors of government and civil administration. They are all talking codswallop to each other, but no one has the cojones to be the first to admit that they do not understand what has been said.

Why Donald Trump should play even more golf | Patrick Barkham

Scrolling through Twitter last night, I wondered why I felt so well. Not smug, just mystified by a mental and physical glow that made me strangely impervious to the toxic aspects of social media.

It had been an unmemorable weekend. I’d had a distressing argument with one daughter over her disinclination to go swimming; visited a garden centre without buying anything; spotted a marsh harrier; and played “the wheelbarrow game” in the garden, which involves carting one child in a wheelbarrow in pursuit of the others.

Then I read an interview with Florence Williams, author of The Nature Fix, who mentioned that we spend on average 5% of our day outdoors. I totted up my 15-hour Sunday: I’d spent exactly half outside.

We’re oblivious to one of our most obvious requirements. Homo sapiens is supremely adaptable, but westerners have lived predominantly inside for 10 generations at most. We need air, sky and some kind of engagement with the earth – but we’re bouncing off mental and physical walls.

There’s no intrinsic moral blessing to it. We may be shooting grouse, paintballing, cycling, gardening or climbing rocks, but a big portion of the pleasure is simply being outdoors.

There’s a furore about Donald Trump playing golf so often in the first weeks of his presidency. This might just be keeping him calm and sane. Play on, Mr President.

The west does not need the grinding physical labour that sent farm labourers to an early grave, but we must reimagine work and schooling to permit more time outdoors. We’d be wise to protect green space in cities and allow more of the solar-powered, pollution-fighting machines otherwise known as trees, which enhance our wellbeing more than we realise.

These are not new arguments. Octavia Hill, a co-founder of the National Trust, was banging on about “open-air sitting rooms” for the urban poor in the 1870s. But we now have neuroscience to prove what we overlook: we need nature far more than it needs us.

The nitrogen nightmare

stinging nettles

Detoxifying the air is our most immediately pressing environmental challenge – for obvious, self-interested reasons. Less obvious is the impact of air pollution on plants. Nitrogen and ammonia unleashed by burning fossil fuels, traffic and farm fertilisers are having a devastating impact on plants, according to the charity Plantlife. A staggering 90% of nature-rich habitats in England and Wales are suffering from excess nitrogen. In such conditions, a few “thuggish” species such as nettles thrive, smothering rarer wildflowers, fungi, lichen and the invertebrates that depend on them.

We need to talk about nitrogen, says Plantlife. We do. And somewhere in a parallel, enlightened world, politicians sport baseball caps embossed with the vote-winning slogan: Reduce nitrogen Deposition Now.

Notes on a very small island

The British Isles is an archipelago of about 6,000 islands but we lost a big one, Doggerland, 8,000 years ago. Our neolithic forebears would have been delighted by plans to rebuild a 2.5 sq mile island on Dogger Bank, in the North Sea. The old Doggerland was swamped by rising seas; Doggerland 2.0 will be devoted to renewable energy, helping to lessen the sea-level rise caused by global warming.

Sadly for romantics, this idealistic island is called the North Sea Wind Power Hub, and will be built by energy companies from Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. This is our ancestral home. We must participate, if only to preserve the Doggerland brand. But I suppose Brexit means we’re a lonely set of small islands these days.

Boys and girls need to go out to play | Letters

“If we want a society that promotes happiness and wellbeing among children” (We should be ashamed of what we’re doing to Britain’s children, Owen Jones, 4 October), we could start by giving them back the space where they are happiest, and the freedom to enjoy it.

In 2008, after the UK came last in a Unicef league table of developed nations’ children’s wellbeing, a consensus was quickly reached that children desperately needed more time, space and opportunity to play, not on screens and social media, but with their friends, outside, as they have done for millennia. A 10-year strategy was launched to “make England the best place in the world to grow up”, with every neighbourhood made safer from traffic and containing attractive places to play within easy reach of children’s homes.

In spite of growing evidence that free play, in the real world, is a vital component in children’s adaptability and resilience, this plan was abandoned in 2010 and children’s play services have been heavily hit by austerity measures ever since.

• As a teacher who has worked in music education for nearly 30 years, I want to echo Victoria Trow’s letter (2 October). There is a great deal of evidence to support play-based learning – this is well known in the education sector as well as among parents. But policymakers are too frightened to jump off the conveyor belt of testing and results that is ruining our children’s sense of self-worth and their chance of a happy and carefree childhood. The job of a child is to play. There are no ifs or buts about this. Let our children sing and dance and play make-believe. Let them get muddy and jump in puddles. This is how we can nurture our next generation for the better.

Spanking, caning and consent play: how feminist porn frees women from shame

Can a feminist have rape fantasies?

According to feminist pornography producer Pandora Blake, who runs the fetish porn site Dreams of Spanking and frequently portrays fantasies of “non-consent”, the answer is a no-brainer. “Absolutely.”

The general consensus in the feminist porn movement is that no fantasy, no matter how anti-feminist the subject matter appears to be, is off limits. To tell a woman what she is and is not allowed to be turned on by is just about as anti-feminist as it gets.

Related: What should you tell your kids about porn?

“Removing shame from hardcore BDSM desire and rape play and age play and all of the kinky taboos that women just have not been allowed to like ever, that’s the kind of stuff that really draws me into the feminist porn movement,” says Courtney Trouble, the producer behind Trouble Productions and a past Feminist Porn Conference keynote speaker.

“If we come out and say ‘I have a rape fantasy,’ it’s like, ‘Whoa, you are broken,’” Trouble says. “That’s the conversation, and it just needs to change.”

Feminists routinely fight for sexual agency – a woman’s right to make decisions about her own sexuality, including when and with whom to have sex, and when, if ever, to get pregnant. Feminists traditionally rebel against the forces that would hem in these rights: the puritanical voices that say that a woman who enjoys sex is a slut, that would restrict access to contraceptives, that claim that dressing provocatively is inviting rape.

Following that logic, feminists argue they shouldn’t invoke shame around the sexual fantasies of others – even if those fantasies include images of kink and domination, or even rape.

“There’s a clear distinction between fantasizing about being coerced, and actually being coerced,” Blake says, explaining that just because she has (and depicts) dark fantasies doesn’t in any way mean that she’s endorsing real-life nonconsensual sex acts.

“In some cases, people’s porn preferences contradict who they are in the world – as responsible people who are committed to justice and equality,” says Tristan Taormino, a feminist porn producer, sex educator, and organizer of the annual Feminist Porn Conference in Toronto. “And I’m OK with that.”

Taormino’s own porn focuses on female enjoyment, on diversity of bodies, and on the comfort and authentic expression of her performers. She often subverts the tropes viewers might expect to find in porn.

“Certainly there are things in mainstream porn that I think are stereotypical, or repetitive, boring, or even offensive,” Taormino told me, “but the answer is not to shut down porn. The answer is to make more porn.

“Most mainstream porn revolves around the ever-present erection,” she says, “which speaks volumes about how it really revolves around male pleasure, male desire, male fantasy. So I’ve shot scenes where a male partner will make a woman come with his hands, mouth or a toy without ever taking his pants off.”

She also includes scenes where women initiate sexual encounters, or where actors direct each other, rather than everyone seeming to know what they’re doing at all times. No pizza boys show up at the door only to mobbed by a gaggle of waiting co-eds. She makes a point to emphasize consent and mutual enjoyment.

Trouble’s porn also frequently focuses on subverting expectations set by mainstream porn. As a plus-sized performer who has been asked by mainstream producers to appear in porn with phrases like “chubby chaser” in the title, or asked to eat cake in porn scenes, Trouble delights in making porn where fat people are depicted as desirable. And while mainstream “lesbian porn” usually consists of scenes where stereotypical, feminine, straight female actors perform sex acts on each other for the enjoyment of straight male viewers, Trouble shoots girl-on-girl scenes with lesbian viewers in mind, and with butch actors as well as femme.

The feminism of Trouble and Taormino’s porn isn’t limited to the content – they are also strongly committed to a safe and comfortable work environment, fair pay, and a creative voice for their actors. This behind-the-scenes work is especially important for porn like Blake’s. While Blake doesn’t believe that the content of her work is at odds with her feminism, where it gets complicated, she says, is in portraying and sharing those fantasies without promoting actual violence toward women. In a world where porn is the de facto sex education for any teenager with an internet connection, socially responsible producers have to think not only about what will get people off, but what people will learn.

Blake says that making a big disclaimer about consent in the beginning of a film would break the spell of the fantasy, but the negotiation of boundaries that’s part of any healthy BDSM still needs to happen.

The Dreams of Spanking site includes tons of behind-the-scenes footage that shows what happens when someone calls cut (which she encourages her performers to do if they need or want to), or how the scene really does stop when someone uses a safe word. Rather than to-camera interviews where performers can feel like they’re on the spot to say the right thing (“I’ve lied in that situation,” she says), the Dreams of Spanking behind-the-scenes footage shows what really happens on her sets, so that viewers can see that everyone involved is a willing and enjoying participant.

Blake says she only casts people who are kinky in their real lives, whom she meets through the BDSM scene, to make sure that they know what they’re signing up for and that they’ll genuinely enjoy it.

“In a way,” she says, “I’m filming a live BDSM scene,” as opposed to actors depicting BDSM. “It’s about taking your authentic experience and turning it into a performance.”

Blake says that she’s always been kinky, since long before she knew what that meant. She remembers reading the descriptions of canings in Roald Dahl’s autobiography and being simultaneously fascinated and ashamed of her response.

“Even then I knew that it was not accepted to be fascinated by descriptions of other people’s pain,” she said. “All of us have to unlearn that received shame before we can enjoy ourselves and our sexuality, even if it’s the most pleasure-based sexuality, let alone when it’s anything outside of the norm.”

Related: Feminist pornographer wins right to reinstate sadomasochism website

She first discovered spanking as an erotic activity when she was a teen reading erotic fiction, but it wasn’t until she started exploring the world of online porn that she realized she wasn’t the only one who was turned on by the idea of spankings or canings more severe than playful smacks.

“What’s hot about spanking is the fear of it, the anxiety and anticipation of what’s coming,” Blake says. She likes to create scenes not where spanking just comes out of nowhere, but where a character anticipates it, “like a schoolgirl who knows she’s going to get a caning after school and can’t think about anything else and she’s asking her friends how bad it’s going to be, if it’s going to hurt.”

It’s not unfeminist to be a female submissive, Blake says, but it’s unfeminist to assume that someone in the BDSM scene is a submissive just because they’re a woman. She says that people in the BDSM scene, like people everywhere, have internalized ideas of gender norms, and that that’s part of what she’s trying to fight with Dreams of Spanking.

“The way to have sex in a feminist way is with consent, communication, and respect,” Blake says. “So if it’s possible to have sex that way, it’s possible to BDSM in that way, because they’re the same, really.”

How they play hide-and-seek with your wellness

Right now we know more about nutritional vitamins, minerals and nutrition in general then ever prior to, but at the very same time there are different factors of the media and medical local community that want to preserve everybody in the dark about the correct function and electrical power that a suitable, clean diet plan and successful supplementation play in our well being and life.

As a lot of who review normal wellness, nutrition and these who subscribe to a variety of newsletters, the pharmaceutical businesses are a major front in the war against nutrition. That’s because it is been identified because the turn of the last century that the cause of almost all degenerative diseases as properly as the weakening of the immune program that makes one particular susceptible to communicable ailments are deficiencies of various key nutrients or total lack of them altogether.

Of program this knowledge has been very carefully and cleverly hidden from the public for in excess of a single hundred many years now given that they cannot have folks studying that they can be healthful merely by taking the proper nutrients and the proper quantities of every.

That is why as is the situation with vitamin C and several other nutritional vitamins, the RDA for most nutrients is pathetically reduced and barely enough to preserve you alive, let alone for you to be healthier and sturdy.

Considering that the mid 1800’s, the naturopathic doctor has ceaselessly and continuously come beneath attack by the MD’s and organized medical neighborhood.
As the mechanized see of the entire body and the germ concept of ailment started to turn into more accepted along with the belief that chemicals and medicines have been the way of the long term, the attacks became much more frequent, bold and progressed to outright lies at instances.

That’s simply because the MD, with his surgical procedures, chemical medicines, fancy concoctions and useless health care terminology had significantly much more likely for financial obtain than did the naturopath or “country doctor”.

They saw the country medical doctor as a threat to their growing influence and livelihood as properly. In truth the healthcare terminology that medical doctors use was created precisely to make the typical individual truly feel ignorant and stupid and to hold folks from ever trying to diagnose or remedy themselves.

The AMA was formed in 1847 especially to shield the revenue and practices of medical doctors, the MD, not the “country doctor” who they came to view as backwards and outdated.

Of program they know that the methods and cures of the nation medical professional were far far better, cheaper and safer than the medicines and surgical procedure technique of the “medical doctor”, also known as the “Slash and Burn” strategy, but it was all about the earnings, so if the AMA was going to represent any group they knew that the MD’s provided them the biggest chance at revenue, growth and energy.

The AMA is a union produced especially for doctors, NOT patients, not to uncover cures, not to avert ailment, but to safeguard the earnings of medical doctors. Just like any union, its task is to shield the jobs and income of its members.

The AMA is not the great, benign or righteous agency that it tries to persuade the globe that it is.

The western allopathic health care establishments understands that nutrition prevents disease and cures most non-communicable and even many communicable illnesses as nicely. That is why they work so hard to suppress this expertise and why they maintain striving to get nutrients like vitamin C labeled as a “drug”. They haven’t nevertheless, but they’re not providing up on this both.

In the book “Nutrition and Physical Degeneration”, Dr. Weston A. Price tag specifics his discoveries in the 1920’s of primitive tribes and cultures all around the planet that have been models of health and totally free of dental caries and degenerative conditions.

Since he was a dentist searching for the trigger of cavities (caries), that was the major concentrate of his guide. However, he also found in his analysis and travels that a strong and irrefutable website link existed amongst those who had cavities, crowded teeth, and “malformed” faces, and those that lacked nutrition.

When the native peoples began to eat the present day processed foods devoid of real nutrients and loaded with chemical substances and artificial ingredients, they also suffered the identical dental and health issues as those raised on such diets.

When the native peoples went back to their traditional entire food items diet program, cavities that were progressing ceased and the up coming generation of young children have been born with best teeth and drastically improved immunity as had the previously untouched generations.

Information such as this is strong, and it’s this type of expertise that the “powers that be” don’t want as well many men and women being aware of about. The much less real expertise and truth that you have about how to prevent and get rid of illness and degenerative conditions with the electrical power of nutrition, herbs, exercise, deep breathing, meditation, rest and numerous other natural and different approaches, the a lot more men and women will suffer needlessly while the people who handle these organizations, including pharmaceutical firms, medical professionals and hospitals all get richer.

The rest of us will proceed to get poorer even though trying to spend for this system of ineffective, dangerous and deadly so-named “medicines” and procedures.

The inexpensiveness and effectiveness of organic cures and the cultures that practice them, this kind of as the Chinese, are a direct risk to the stranglehold that the western health-related technique has on this nation and most of the globe.

That is one of the primary factors why a lot of elements of Chinese medication were so strongly suppressed, laughed at, made fun of, ridiculed and ignored in the previous thirty or so years.

It was via the actions of the sufferers themselves, who stored going to Chinese doctors and other all-natural physicians and spreading the word of how successful these strategies were, that finally acquired the western health-related establishment to start off taking discover of Chinese medication and other normal remedies.

They recognized that because they couldn’t suppress this any longer, they may as well admit how effectively it functions so that they can management it, regulate it, license it and at least make some money off of it. This is especially the situation with acupuncture.

Even although they reject the Chinese explanations of Chi movement and stability and prefer to feel that it’s just effecting the nerves of the entire body or it’s an out of manage placebo effect, they even now allowed it to be practiced and covered by insurance as a legitimate and powerful cure for specific illnesses.

Receiving correct nutrition is vitally crucial, which is why I juice a number of instances a week to make sure that I’m acquiring a lot of important nutrients into my entire body and I can feel this as I drink the existence in the juice down.

What’s also exciting is that this is also a fantastic way to help one particular lose fat, considering that juicing delivers tons of nutrients into the entire body hunger frequently disappears for a number of hours or far more afterward and it looks to also increase metabolic process given that the physique is getting tons of nutrients and enzymes to function with better efficiency and at a larger level.

I misplaced more than twenty lbs when I started juicing about 5 instances a week. As my appetite decreased and my taste for carrots, celery, broccoli, spinach and this kind of enhanced, I no longer wished to put pastries, pizza and doughnuts or other junk food into my entire body and undoubtedly not rapidly food.

Right after juicing at lunch time every single day at one particular of my jobs, I usually ate my final meal at three pm in the afternoon, had no dinner and was not even hungry till about eight am the up coming morning.
Even then I was not ravenous at all and could have easily gone until lunch without having eating anything at all.

That’s due to the fact when you are hungry, your physique is not so a lot craving the reliable matter. . . it is craving the nutrients in food items, real nutrients from all-natural, complete meals.

Because juicing delivers huge quantities of these nutrients to the entire body in liquid kind, your physique has loads of nutrients in reserve to generate what it needs, so hunger just goes into a stand-by mode till the cells tell the liver and brain as soon as again that far more nutrients are essential, at which level you commence to feel hungry once again.

You are also getting these nutrients in a a lot more readily bioavailable type because the nutrients are also being delivered with tons of normal plant enzymes, which yet again take a fantastic load off the pancreas because the entire body does not have to generate large quantities of enzymes to digest sound matter.

Of program juicing is never a prolonged term substitute for actual, sound entire meals, but doing short phrase juice fasts and juicing daily or at least many occasions a week is a important and amazing way to make sure that you’re getting big quantities of required nutrients in an unadulterated form every time you juice.

I talked about over a minor about the liver and brain getting signals from the cells. The cells communicate with the rest of the body utilizing energies very comparable to light.

A physicist by the identify of Popp has demonstrated this in his several experiments with cellular communication. He started out this operate because the present day idea that the cells are all communicating through chemical messages simply did not hold up.

Cells were getting numerous signals far too speedily to be explained by chemical reactions. His research showed that in truth the total entire body is communicating by way of power in the light spectrum and that this communication goes on at virtually the velocity of light.

We are indeed all “luminous beings”. This is also why acquiring out into the sun for ten-15 minutes a day is totally crucial, not only for the production of vitamin D, but so that your cells can appropriately communicate with every other and especially the brain.

The Chinese and notably the Taoists practice visual workouts known as “Administering Sunbeams” early in the morning and late in the afternoon to guarantee that the brain and
body get ample amounts of UV rays from the sun. The physique does talk and has its personal language of communication, it’s totally remarkable!

In regards to the liver, in Chinese medicine it is been known for centuries that the liver and spleen are quite important for digestion. They are given a special relationship in the five element theory of Chinese medicine which teaches that each and every organ has strong ties with the others and that there is a definite lead to and result partnership at function.

For example, the Chinese have recognized that the abdomen and spleen are linked pairs. This is one of the strongest inter-organ relationships in the physique. When the body wants nutrients and even a lot more then just nutrients, but Chi, the liver, which is the vitamin storehouse of the body, sends a signal to the spleen (and abdomen by extension) that it needs energy.

The spleen, which gives its power to the thoughts and is accountable for concentration and faith in Chinese medicine, then signals the stomach and brain that nutrients are essential and the brain interprets this and starts to send out a signal back to the stomach.

We truly feel this as the beginnings of hunger. So naturally, we grab anything to eat. When we have been all consuming actual foods from nature, we acquired tons of nutrients, fiber, bulk matter, sunlight and earth energy in people all-natural food items and the a variety of bodily and energy systems of the human physique were pleased.

This kept extreme meals cravings and bingeing to a minimal due to the fact those cravings merely in no way manifested themselves to the degree that we see today.

This is precisely since so a lot of folks are consuming nutrient-, power- and enzyme-dead meals, that the entire body is in a constant state of nutritional and energy deficiency. Since of this, the liver is not becoming given the nutrients, enzymes or bio-power (chi) that it needs, so the feeling of hunger or of by no means feeling pleased is almost always “on” to some degree in most people nowadays.

When you adhere to a total foods diet regime, which consists of juicing with lots of fresh veggies that are nutrient and enzyme dense, you are offering your body not only the bodily nutrients and enzymes that it demands, but simply because such food items are alive, there is also the essential and indisputable non-physical element of Chi existing in the food items that the body also demands to convert all these nutrients into other chemical compounds, hormones and enzymes to carry out all its functions.

When we consume processed meals such as sugar, which leeches calcium from the bones and teeth and nutrients from the liver, we’re stripping away the nutrients essential and not providing the physique what’s truly required for us to be healthful, feel wonderful and live prolonged and content lives.

See, the body is really sensible. It is aware of what is natural and excellent for it and what is not. It knows that real meals have nutrients, nutritional vitamins, minerals and energy current in them. Most other man-created garbage is treated as a toxin by the body. The liver will take care of the nutrient portion and the spleen extracts the Chi or energy from food items.
But when we consume guy-produced junk foods and useless stomach fillers this kind of as doughnuts, cakes, candies, cookies, refined white breads, pastries and a lot more, the body senses the different non-organic and foreign chemical substances in these foods and the almost total lack of nutrients.
The body should have nutrients to digest people foods, so it must somehow “borrow” the nutrients that it requirements to digest this “food” from the liver, simply because the physique can not digest them with no these nutrients present.

Chemicals that the entire body can not digest are considered foreign and toxic by the physique and are moved to the eliminatory organs for excretion and elimination from the physique. If it cannot get rid of it, it does the subsequent best thing, which is to “isolate” it away from the important internal organs.
It mostly does this by storing such foreign matter in the fatty tissues, the fascia amongst the muscle groups and the joints. In the case of the latter, this gets one of the principal causes of arthritis, which is the body’s try to keep hazardous crystalline structures formed from the consumption of dangerous and unnatural chemical compounds away from the organs.

Exciting that your laptop anti-virus software also does the exact same issue. When it can’t eliminate a virus from the technique, it “quarantines” it away so it does not injury the operating technique or other vital files.

Obtaining appropriate amounts of nutritional vitamins, minerals and nutrients is absolutely crucial for overall health, regeneration, power, happiness and longevity. Just as a lack of vitamin C brings about rickets and scurvy, just as a enough lack of the “B” vitamins can cause extreme sickness and at some point death, so also the lack of nutrients in our bodies causes slow degeneration of the physique and eventual premature death.
Really popular fitness gurus of the 1950’s after said “If guy made it, really do not consume it” and “It’s not what you do some of the time that counts, it is what you do all of the time that counts.”

We have to be conscious of our nutrient intake every day, not just some days and not others. In this modern, rapidly-paced planet it’s hard to make certain we’re obtaining all that we need.

So, what’s my daily regimen? 1st of all, I adhere to a vegan diet regime as natural as achievable. Then comes my supplementation:

A single teaspoon of natural sulfur crystals twice a day, which heals just about every thing, since the oxygen it releases leaves the physique in twelve hrs a single scoop of the Zeal thirty ingredient superfood and a packet of Shakeology Vegan Chocolate 42 ingredient superfood in an natural fruit (strawberries, blueberries, mangos, raspberries, bananas) smoothie with pitted dates. Soon after that I consider a tablespoon of the most tasty, melt-in-your-mouth, fresh bee pollen. That alone nourishes me to play in three softball leagues and controls my hunger till about 2pm. The days I do not play ball I am normally at the fitness center undertaking different cardio and bodyweight workout routines or swimming or undertaking stand-up paddling, or hiking mountain trails.
At virtually 77, I have no illnesses and consider no meds. If I can do it, any person can do it.

What the voter was supposed to make of it, I really do not know. The NHS is this kind of a vast and complex institution that to say it has declined or enhanced, based mostly on a handful of carefully selected statistics, is absurd. The only affordable conclusion, at least from viewing this exchange, would be that the NHS was better and worse underneath Labour, and is worse and greater under the Coalition.

“Mr Speaker! Official figures from the Met Office demonstrate that on Saturday it rained. Nevertheless on the identical Saturday in June 2006, below the last Government, it was sunny. Can the Prime Minister describe why Saturdays in June have become wetter on his view?”

“Mr Speaker, the proper honourable gentleman talks about the climate final Saturday simply because he does not want to talk about the climate final Thursday. The fact is that last Thursday was two degrees Celsius hotter than the identical Thursday in 2009 – when he was Vitality Secretary!”

“Mr Speaker, once again he can’t even answer a easy query. Allow me try out him on rainbows. Research by the University of Madeupname exhibits that, since he took office, the quantity of challenging-operating British families discovering pots of gold at the ends of rainbows has been an astonishing zero per cent. Can he tell the Home why he and his Cabinet of millionaires are so out of touch with the aspirations of ordinary men and women?”

“Mr Speaker, his paymasters at the Unite union may possibly have advised him to inquire about rainbows, but the British people know that our extended-phrase meteorological strategy is working. Barbecues, up! Wet weekends, down! Sun tans, 5.6 per cent longer-lasting! 7 thousand much more deckchairs, 12,000 more seaside balls, and more twin-cone mint chocolate ice creams with a flake than at any time below 13 many years of his government! That’s why the Labour celebration can in no way be trusted with the British climate again!”

Spirited although Mr Cameron’s defence could be of his NHS record, some of his boasting was dubious. Under this Government, he crowed, “There are 7,000 more physicians!” Yet to train as a GP will take 10 many years. Unless Mr Cameron and his present Cabinet invested the period 2000-04 going round secondary colleges and urging pupils to examine medicine, it appears rather a stretch for him to claim credit score for it.

Finance pros have a part to play in the NHS

Abacus

‘Only thirty% of finance staff feel valued by their nationwide government wellness division, falling to 17% by the public’, says Paul Briddock. Photograph: Wolfram Schroll

A lot more than a yr has passed considering that the reorganisation of the NHS in England, and April marked a new chapter as Simon Stevens took up his chief executive publish. To mark a year on from the alterations, the Healthcare Fiscal Management Association (HFMA) took a snapshot looking at the attitudes of their members, these doing work on the frontline.

Amid the backdrop of monetary pressures, it is estimated that the NHS in England demands to discover £30bn of cost savings by 2020-21, the results have been telling, particularly when it comes to how finance workers truly feel they are perceived by clinical colleagues and the general public. Even though 89% truly feel highly valued by their line managers and a even more 69% by their boards, 39% do not come to feel clinicians value the contribution they make to the sector.

Even so, the finance perform has a critical function to play in the NHS. On the transactional side, finance experts hold the organization side of large nearby organisations ticking in excess of – at the most standard degree, employees and invoices get paid. But the finance function is a lot greater than this. Finance professionals have a large position to perform in governance, accountability, yearly reports and maintaining accounts that inform public sector funding choices in the future.

Perceived attitudes of individuals past the hospital doors have been even a lot more worrying as only 30% of finance employees truly feel valued by their national government wellness department, falling to 18% for individuals and only 17% by the public. One finance manager even admitted it was “tricky” to inform a stranger the place they worked, and this in component was exacerbated by media pillorying of managers inside of the NHS.

Why are we in this situation? Do we danger dropping talented personnel working in the sector due to a lack of understanding about the work they do? Moving forward it is clear the NHS wants to transform the way it delivers providers. We want to enhance the top quality of solutions and meet growing demand – driven by an ageing population and growing levels of extended term illness – from broadly flat, real terms budgets.

There is a consensus across the sector, from finance specialists and clinical workers, that adjust can only come about by shifting patient pathways – for example delivering far more providers in the local community to support patients to deal with their conditions and stay away from inpatient hospital admissions. At the identical time there is probably to be a part for greater specialisation or integration of companies – such as the alterations in stroke care. Strategies for all of these moves forward require to have a firm economic foundation and strategic organizing from a multi-disciplined staff. Clinicians tasked to make selections about companies want good top quality details and intelligence at their fingertips, evaluating the recent state of play to forecasted alternatives – their finance colleagues can offer these. Even in which required adjustments could increase fees, individuals on the frontline want to recognize how and exactly where these charges will arise, so they can program for them.

In contrast to some perceptions, most finance professionals questioned were motivated to remain in their part due to public sector values (70%) or “the opportunity to improve companies for individuals” (60%), demonstrating that monetary staff, in spite of what might be reflected by public view, are as committed to public service aims as the clinicians they employ. So to move forward, perhaps a broader understanding of healthcare finance is necessary?

It is honest to say that a day never ever passes without a NHS financial story in the information. Numerous of these highlight concerns that teams of finance specialists and clinicians have been doing work hard to solve long ahead of they are reported on. Whilst it is essential to inform the public, there need to also be a accountability to give an appropriate context – how a lot it charges to offer sufferers with X and in which the cash comes from for Y – to paint a rounded and reasonable image. Patients should be at the heart of everything the NHS sets out to do and I was pleased to see the attitudes of fellow finance experts reiterating this as component of the results we located.

The analysis also showed that job fulfillment was large (six.8 out of ten) and improved with seniority – a reassuring sentiment to hear in a time of mounting pressure and flux. There have been a quantity of aspects which preserve personnel morale sturdy one is the opportunities the NHS supplies for them to take on new roles and difficulties.

We all have a central part to perform in generating clinically-led transformation come about, achieving the ambitions set out by the new NHS framework and finding out from the problems of the past. But we will only ever attain a fit-for-the-future NHS as a staff – clinicians and healthcare financial professionals doing work together.

New play by Carl Djerassi, inventor of the pill, explores philosophers" sex lives

Carl Djerassi

The pill ‘was extremely crucial, but I’ve carried out considerably much more complicated, crucial things’ … Carl Djerassi. Photograph: Karen Ostertag

Theatre often can make grandiose claims about modifying the world. But it’s challenging to think of a playwright who can match Carl Djerassi for historical effect. Soon after all, this is the guy who invented the pill.

Today, aged 90, he loathes the concept of currently being defined by a 60-yr-previous achievement. “Why do you believe your editors were interested in me?” he asks. When I proffer the pill over the plays he’s written in the previous 15 many years, he huffs: “That, of program, irritates me. Any conversation usually starts with the pill.”

His accent is an Austrian purr with the softest Rs you’ll ever hear. His all-natural mode of speech is to lecture. “Of course, societally it was incredibly crucial, but scientifically, I have done a lot much more challenging, critical issues. The presumption that I sat close to between 28 and 90 performing nothing irritates me.”

In fact, Djerassi turned social scientist in his 50s, novelist in his 60s and, at 75, playwright. Reinvention has run via his lifestyle. He left Austria for America in 1939, aged 15. “An easy age,” he now says, “You happen to be still adaptable enough to turn into an American. You can disregard almost everything that took place earlier.”

He is written 11 plays, one of which, Foreplay, opens at the King’s Head theatre in Islington this week. The play brings philosophers Theodor Adorno and Hannah Arendt with each other in excess of a mystery surrounding Walter Benjamin. What, they want to know, was in the briefcase he carried more than the Pyrenees, shortly prior to he died?

“Every person assumed he was carrying something that he didn’t want to get misplaced,” says Djerassi. “My assumption was the reverse: that he took anything with him due to the fact he did not want it to get discovered.” Namely: explicit material. Porn.

Study in between the play’s lines and you’ll spot Djerassi’s resentment about reductive narratives. For all we attribute tips to men and women, the actuality isn’t as simple. Foreplay insists that tips do not arrive in isolation. It notes Adorno and Arendt’s roots in Benjamin’s function to display that concepts have ancestry, but also nods to unacknowledged influences as properly. The perform exhibits thinkers as sexual beings with their suggestions inspired by adore.

It’s a fascinating perform, but an outdated-fashioned one a wonderful go through, but challenging to picture it functioning onstage. Djerassi is unapologetic about that. “Ninety-nine per cent of playwrights will disagree, but plays are also really worth reading through,” he insists. “I consider of playwriting as a three-stage approach. One particular ought to initial publish it for the reader. Phrases actually count.”

While he is adapted the script for functionality, Djerassi sees his plays within a dialogical tradition, which utilizes imagined debate to make its level. It might be unfashionable, but once again Djerassi is unashamed. “I have didactic motives and, of program, numerous folks detest didacticism in theatre. There is nothing wrong with studying although becoming amused.”

Most of his plays are directly scientific. When playwrights use science – he cites Michael Frayn and his old friend Tom Stoppard – they typically do so as metaphor, not, as Djerassi intends, as a topic in its very own appropriate. Science-in-theatre, he calls it and the aim is to counter what he sees as science’s bad rep onstage. “Science and scientists just have not produced it in theatre. Both they are Frankensteins or Strangeloves, idiots savants or nerds, never ever regular individuals like myself.”

• Foreplay is at the King’s Head, Islington, until 31 May possibly

What Part Should Coca-Cola Play In Weight problems Investigation?

What position must Coca-Cola Coca-Cola and other meals and beverage companies play in funding and communicating investigation about nutrition and obesity?

The query is prompted by a recent article in the Journal of the American University of Cardiology. The “state-of-the-art” paper evaluations the connection of obesity and cardiovascular ailment and presents the case that a decline in bodily action is the principal trigger of the obesity epidemic.  The write-up downplays the part of calories and diet plan and does not include the phrases “sugar,” “soda,” or “beverage.” Three of the five authors of the paper report financial relationships with Coca Cola.

It is crucial to acknowledge that there is an lively scientific controversy about the relative significance of diet and exercising. But it also would seem clear that the viewpoint on this controversy as presented in this paper is remarkably congruent with the interests of Coca Cola.

Defending Coca-Cola

I asked the lead writer of the paper, Carl Lavie, a Louisiana cardiologist and weight problems specialist, to respond to issues that the authors’ relationships to Coke might have affected the content of the paper. Right here is Lavie’s (lightly edited)  response:

My individual romantic relationship was delivering consulting and providing a couple of lectures on the significance of fitness. My colleagues have also consulted and acquired non-limited educational grants  for study research. Coca Cola had practically nothing to do with the information of the examine, analyzing final results, or publishing the paper. For that reason, I do not believe that this partnership adversely impacts any of the benefits of their studies or my invited state-of-the-artwork review post, which transpires to be on a subject the place I have published far more than anybody else in the planet in the course of the previous ten-15 many years.

My post genuinely was not on sugar, and you are appropriate that this (or diet plan in common) was only briefly pointed out. Despite the fact that  there is a good deal of consideration on fast meals and sugary beverages leading to obesity, the analysis from my colleagues and I display that very marked declines in physical activity, which is also a main part in leading to fitness, is by far the main lead to of obesity, not sugar and fast food items. However, I agree if the bodily exercise is very minimal, a single have to cut all calories to compensate, such as these from sugar and rapidly meals.Concerning Coca Cola, despite the fact that their “flagship” merchandise is a sugary beverage, keep in thoughts that they have many much more minimal or no calorie items in their comprehensive arsenal!!

In the medical field, many firms fund scientific studies and educational plans, but the investigators and speakers are not changing what they say due to who sponsors the operate!

Lavie subsequently sent a succinct summary of his place:

1) Hopefully the science speaks for itself, regardless of the sponsor.

2) Science itself is enhanced by data and information.

3) Not to be too harsh, but my view (primarily based on my interpretaion of the science) is not for sale and cannot be purchased. I am confident my colleagues really feel the identical way.

four) All researchers have bias, as do I, but if you try out to eliminate each and every researcher/scientist/clinician with bias, there will be hardly any left.

five) Therefore, the ideal way to proceed is to emphasis on well-created and well-executed studies.

I then sent Lavie some followup concerns:

Do you think there must be any limitation on business funding of analysis and schooling? What about analysis sponsored by a tobacco business?

Lavie: I do not feel so, as prolonged as it is entirely disclosed. I feel that in some of the tobacco settlements they are possessing to spend income for study. There are quite tiny likely health benefits of tobacco, despite the fact that I guess if a single smoked 1 cigarette a week there may not be a lot harm. I personally have no issue with [some]one particular accepting funds, specifically as a non-restricted educational grant, but suspect few would do so contemplating the adverse emotions that so numerous have about the tobacco sector. I suspect that quite couple of truly feel as strongly about Coca Cola, Pepsi Cola, McDonalds, Burger King, Taco Bell and so forth.

What about unconscious bias or subtle bias? For instance, isn’t it feasible that the paper would have contained a brief discussion of sugar and sugar-sweetened drinks (SSBs) without the fiscal associations of the authors with Coke?

Lavie: This is achievable I guess if a single have been working for a organization, but in my case for example, obtaining a few minor honorarium would hardly taint my views. My very first lecture for Coca Cola was just a couple of many years in the past, and I have been publishing on this subject for nearly 15 many years, so this is probably not applicable. I have by no means published on sugar or even relevant to this in any of my nearly 800 publications, so personally this genuinely does not apply much…

What do you think is Coca Cola’s motivation in providing funds for analysis and education? Does this signify altruism on the company’s element? Would it be very likely to fund researchers who hold opinions that are much less congenial to their company?

Actual daily life worthy of an Alan Bennett play

Father: Ha! Properly, that is hospital, that is. I go to hospital, I come out and I can’t stroll on my bleedin’ leg!

Woman: Do you know why you can’t walk on your leg?

Father: Cos the medical doctor f—– about with it.

Girl: No.

Father: Yes they did.

Woman: No. Do you know how you harm your leg before they place you in hospital?

Father: No.

Woman: You wasn’t strolling effectively, you was dragging your feet. And then all of a sudden you stored falling.

[Father peers at her quizzically, unconvinced.]

I’ve quoted all this to consider to show that, although Safeguarding Our Dad and mom (Thursday, BBC Two) was a documentary, I felt at instances as if I were viewing a perform. A brilliant Television perform: unhappy, quiet, troubling, bleakly humorous, remorselessly realist the kind of Tv play Alan Bennettused to write. In the over scene – and I can’t aid calling it a scene, as if it have been scripted – we noticed a loving but exhausted daughter try out to purpose with Jim, her father, a guy who, despite his clear and rising difficulties, was established to stay residing at residence, alone, rather than be place in care.

INTERVIEW: Alan Bennett: ‘people shouldn’t feel I am cosy’

Other characters – once again, I can’t support saying characters – incorporated Betty, an elderly widow in hospital after a fall. Like Jim, she refused to countenance a potential anyplace other than her own home having triumphantly witnessed off the most recent efforts to coax her into care, she returned home, only to suffer an additional fall and be rushed to hospital once again.

She was pleasant, talkative, heroically stoic. We noticed her on her birthday, in hospital, getting bandages unwound from her foot. “I’ve reached another year of my daily life,” she announced to no a single in specific. “I wondered the place I’d be, what I’d be performing – anything at all superb or not. Nicely,” she concluded, thoughtfully, with no hint of self-pity, “I consider it’s got to come underneath the heading of ‘not’.”

Betty Williams on Safeguarding our Mother and father Photograph: BBC

The first in a series about elderly care, the episode was a image of numerous people’s current, and several more people’s long term. Two thirds of hospital individuals nowadays are aged 65 or over. Quickly it will turn into the norm to spend more of our lives currently being looked right after by our children than we spent hunting after them. Perhaps I only convinced myself the programme felt like a play because I desired, so desperately, to believe it was fiction.

If you located it depressing you could often flip over to Parking Mad, exhibiting on BBC 1 at the very same time. You may well not have expected a documentary about targeted traffic wardens to be particularly amusing, but it frequently was, thanks to the fascinatingly childish behaviour of some of the wardens’ victims. In south London, a van driver was ordered to pay out the £500 in parking fines he’d racked up. He was outraged at the injustice. “You’re canines!” he shouted. “Absolute vermin! There’s folks raping young children and they get 3 months in jail!”

Hmm. Citation required.

We returned to him 10 minutes later. He was nonetheless ranting away. The warden had threatened to confiscate his van.

“There’s a law of this land!” protested the driver. “There’s a law of this land that you can not take a working man’s resources! That’s the law of the land!”

Hmm. Citation necessary.

One more man got fined for overstaying in a auto park. He swore vengeance. “I invested a good deal of money in this city yesterday. I’m going to make an energy not to invest a PENNY today!” Other individuals raged about speed cameras. What has turn out to be of the planet, when a guy can be penalised just for breaking the law.

Overview: Game of Thrones, episode 2: ‘King Joffrey requires centre stage’

As I mentioned final week of Game of Thrones (Monday, Sky Atlantic), it is not true that any character can die. One particular character who was well worth killing off, though, was King Joffrey (Jack Gleeson), and in this most current episode he was duly dispatched: poisoned at his wedding ceremony by unseen hands. A petulantly vicious adolescent psychopath, Joffrey was as well limited a character to protect: there was nowhere else to take him. The drama’s many other main villains – amongst them Joffrey’s mother Cersei and his “uncle” (i.e. father) Jaime – have mystery, unpredictability, and even likely for pathos. Joffrey was just a brat in a crown.
