Look on the sweet side of Love Actually | Brief letters

The Vogue photographs of Theresa May show her in clothes and surroundings of smug luxury (‘Trump was actually being a gentleman’, 21 March). They should have been juxtaposed with photos of the homeless, the bedridden elderly receiving negligible care or workers suffering squalid conditions – with Mrs May’s ambiguous claim as the heading, “The Tories help people to rise up”. Surely, time for the people to “rise up”.

Sadiq Khan’s summary of the Battle of Cable Street (G2, 16 March) makes two omissions. In listing the coalition that defeated the fascist march he fails to mention the leading roles played by the Independent Labour party (ILP) and the Communist party. Did he forget or didn’t he know?
Barry Winter

Hadley Freeman (whom I like a lot) goes over the top with her hatred of Love Actually (Opinion, 21 March). The characters played by Hugh Grant, Colin Firth and Alan Rickman did not sexually harass their female subordinates in the workplace: Alan’s secretary threw herself at him, and the other two relationships are rather sweet. I agree the film is cloying mostly, but Bill Nighy rescues it.

I overheard my seven-year-old grandson telling his four-year-old sister to clean her teeth, “or you will end up looking like grandma” (Tooth extractions on children under four rise by quarter, 21 March).

Ingredients To Look For When Buying The Best Foot Cream

Newspapers, magazines, television and even websites on the internet are filled with advertisements that promoted different kinds of products.

Each product claims to be the best at its specific function and claims to beat the competition. Unfortunately, we cannot always rely on information we see in an advertisement.

Companies who design advertisements tend to over exaggerate and may even make false claims sometimes. You might see an advertisement telling you that their product can help you lose five pounds in one week, but after buying the product and using it for a month, you still haven’t lost a single pound. When it comes to choosing the best foot cream, the situation is similar.

You might see a number of advertisements that claim their product can heal your feet, take away any cracks and make it smoother than it ever was before – after buying the product and using it, you could not see or feel any difference.

To buy an effective product, you should not rely on what advertisements say. Instead of listening to the many claims made by models and actors, or the catchphrases they use in magazines and on the internet, rather learn about ingredients that are effective and then look for a product that contains those ingredients.

Glycerin

Glycerin is probably the most popular ingredient used in foot creams. This substance is a natural by-product that is created during the process of soap-making. Glycerin is classified as a humectant. This means that, when applied to the skin, it will attract moisture to the skin.

It is also known as a good solvent, thus used in many beauty and skin care products as well – not just those that treat feet, but also hand creams, hand lotions and body moisturizers.

Tea Tree Oil

Different types of foot creams exist on the market and they all have their own unique benefits. One common problem a lot of people face is fungal infections on their feet.

Fungal infections can also appear on the nails. Treating these infections can help remove the color stains these infections create and give your feet a health boost.

If you suffer from toenail fungus or even infections on the skin of your feet, then you should look for a foot cream that contains tea tree oil.

Lavender Oil

Similar to tea tree oil, lavender oil is also classified as an essential oil. This specific essential oil has different benefits that tea tree oil. Lavender essential oil has the ability to improve blood circulation, to relieve muscle tension and pain, to disinfect the scalp and it may help to speed up wound healing.

These are only a few ingredients that you can look for when choosing a foot cream to use on your own feet. Other ingredients that may also be beneficial include olive oil, alpha hydroxyl acids, macadamia oils and other essential oils.

Companies will do anything to sell their product – in some cases, they even make false claims in order to get people to buy their products. No matter your feet’s skin condition, practicing a daily routine to care for your feet is essential.

We recommend looking for ingredients that are found in the best foot cream in order to benefit from the product without falling for false claims.

Will the Real Vitamin C Please Stand Up: A Closer Look at the Most Controversial Vitamin

When you think of feeling better or fighting off sickness, the first thing that might pop into your mind is, “I’ll take some vitamin C”. You drink some orange juice, maybe an Emergen-C packet, or even take a few tablets of bottled vitamin C in order to chase away the symptoms of an impending cold, flu, or feeling of general fatigue and malaise. Taking between 50-2000 mg during a few days leaves you believing that, “Wow, that vitamin C really helped kick that sick feeling to the curb!”

Vitamin C, whether taken in low or high doses, coupled with its reported health benefiting properties, has been quite controversial for the past several decades and according to the University of California Berkley, no other vitamin has been so extensively researched since 1932. And as of today, despite all the studies, vitamin C still remains a mystery with a divided consensus. The question remains, does it help?

Believe or not, there are two schools of thought regarding water soluble vitamin C also known as L-ascorbic acid or ascorbate. Humans require a regular intake of vitamin C (30-95 mg daily depending on age) because our bodies do not produce nor store this vitamin, however excrete it very quickly.[1] Vitamin C is imperative for maintenance of all the body tissues, proper growth, and wound healing.

New data about the positive effects of vitamin C on the immune system have been introduced in the last several years.[2] Immune cells contain active vitamin C transporter molecules within their membranes that actively pump the vitamin into the cells when more vitamin C is necessary[3], especially phagocytes and T-cells. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), a vitamin C deficiency results in a reduced resistance against certain pathogens, while a higher supply enhances several immune system parameters.[4]

On the other side, a Cochrane Collaboration review has concluded that vitamin C has shown no consistent effect on the duration or severity of helping the common cold symptoms after the initial onset.[5] Although, evidence suggests that it could be justified in people exposed to brief periods of severe physical exercise or cold environments.[6] Whereas, Dr. H.K. Bakhru states, “vitamin C helps prevent and cure the common cold and protects an individual against infections”.[7] It is evident that one community believes it does not help much with the prevention and dissipation of cold and flu symptoms and an increase of immunological factors while the other faction believes it does.

A recent controlled trial study showed that vitamin C deficiency has been linked with frequency and duration of colds coupled with immune system defects, and that there are measurable health advantages associated with vitamin C supplementation.[8] Taking into account that if vitamin C introduced into the body will increase immunity, the next question is which form of vitamin C should be taken?

Here is the secret: few people differentiate between the natural vitamin C which you find in fruits and vegetables (citrus, acerola cherries, greens), and synthetic ascorbic vitamin C present in most energizing drinks, vitamin packets, and vitamin C Bottles that you can buy at your local pharmacy or health food store. Because the two are usually marketed side by side as being one in the same, most people are led to believe that if the label says all natural vitamin C, it must be food based, therefore real and wholesome. However, there is a difference. As O. Hofmleker states,”in its natural form vitamin C has a different design than the synthetic vitamin. The natural vitamin C molecule never occurs in isolated form, but rather accompanied by complex nutrients which apparently are essential for vitamin C’s bioactivity. The synthetic ascorbate however, appears in an isolated form, often in overly high concentrations which the human body hasn’t evolved to properly utilize. Human biology has never evolved to accept synthetic vitamins”.[9]

Synthetic vitamin C was introduced in the 1930’s into the market causing all the rage. However, with its inception it pushed the focus of natural wholesome vitamin C found in foods to the back shelf making it a thing of the past. Since then the new trend has been this synthetic ascorbic acid reportedly being linked to all sorts of health benefits.[[10]–[11]–[12] ] It was also believed to be more readily available year round instead of its natural whole food counterpart. The interesting thing is after so many decades and numerous studies conducted, it has actually been shown that ascorbic acid causes potential damage to health. A recent study on vitamin C (Am J Clin Nutr; Jan 2008) showed adults taking the synthetic version had serious side effects and significant adverse effects on the antioxidant system. Dr. Victor Herbert, professor of medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York has said, “vitamin C in supplement forms mobilizes harmless ferric iron stored in the body and converts it to harmful ferrous iron, which induces damage to the heart and other organs. In addition, unlike the vitamin C naturally present in foods like orange juice, vitamin C as a supplement is not an antioxidant.”[13]

So in order to take the most optimal vitamin C, you should kick the synthetic vitamin C (which is usually ascorbic acid derived from genetically modified corn) and start ingesting either real fruits and vegetables or food-based vitamin C supplements with the highest amount of real vitamin C and bio-available nutrients. Ideally, vitamin C should be ingested in its natural wholesome form in order to give its all encompassing health benefiting properties in the areas of cardiovascular and immunological health.[14] According to NIH, those fruits are fresh, raw cantaloupes, citrus fruits, kiwis, mangos, papayas, pineapples, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, watermelon, and cranberries.[15] In addition, peppers, kale, broccoli and peas are also great options.

Do yourself a favor and introduce natural vitamin C in the form of fruits and vegetables to your daily diet. It can be in the form of fresh squeezed juice, smoothies, or as fruit and vegetable snacks throughout the day. Your body will thank you. Not only will you be supplying yourself with a daily dose of natural vitamin C required for the proper running of your body and its systems, but you will be able to forgo the bottles, powder packets, and drinks filled with a synthetic vitamin that your body was not engineered to consume. The real vitamin C is in fruits and vegetables. Nothing else comes close to that nor can it mimic its intrinsic healing properties. Introduce the real vitamin C into your daily eating habits!

Interesting fact: Vitamin C is the most widely researched nutrient on the Internet.

A Quick Look at the Mental Side Effects of Alcoholism

People are no longer stranger to the idea of alcoholism – the problem has been portrayed in movies several times and some can be witnessed at home, too. The depiction of the typical drunkard in TV programs or movies demonstrates the common effects of alcoholism to a person. The incoherent mumbling, the sudden shift to becoming a chatterbox, and the inability to walk straight – these are just what appears on the outside. There are bigger and more serious effects on the mental health of a person.

The regular consumption of alcohol alters the chemistry of the brain. The amount of alcohol that is not processed by the liver is sent back to the bloodstream, reaching other parts of the body including the brain. Technically speaking, alcohol alters the chemical messengers of the brain called the neurotransmitters. When the neurotransmitter levels are altered, signals controlling the body and its behavior are disrupted as well.

The mental effects of alcoholism can be summarized into four: poor cognitive or learning skills, loss of memory, emotional instability, and poor judgment. Read on to know more about these mental side effects and to understand why an immediate trip to the alcohol rehab centers is deemed necessary.

Cognitive Impairment or Poor Learning Skills

Cognitive impairment is a common effect of alcoholism. The persistent and serious changes to the brain chemistry make learning difficult for alcoholics. Most alcoholics also suffer thiamine deficiency. This nutrient is essential to the health of the brain tissues.

The lack of thiamine due to alcoholism may develop an even more serious disorder called Wernicke Syndrome. This refers to encephalopathy which is characterized by severe mental confusion, poor muscle coordination, and paralysis of the eye nerves. Another mental side effect is the development of Korsakoff’s psychosis. This is a debilitating condition that is linked to persistent learning difficulty.

Poor Judgment and Emotional Impacts

The excessive ingestion of alcohol has an impact on the cerebral cortex of the brain. This brain segment is responsible for processing thoughts which is an important step in making decisions. An alcohol person loses control of the thought processing and may eventually lose his or her inhibitions. The problem in the cerebral cortex is the reason behind a person’s talkativeness when intoxicated. The emotional effects of excessive alcohol intake include bouts of crying, hysteria, anger, and other erratic behaviors.

Here’s the tricky part about alcoholism. Excessive alcohol can actually spike a person’s dopamine level which makes him or her feel great. This encourages a person to drink more. The more a person drinks, the faster the brain chemicals are altered. When the dopamine level subsides, the person experiences the opposite. He or she may start feeling depressed.

Cognitive Decline or Complete Loss of Memory

Chronic alcoholism may completely destroy the brain cells as well as the circuits and synapses of the brain. A long-term alcoholic is likely to experience brain deficits even after sobriety. The cognitive decline may begin with memory slips. However, it may also lead far-reaching aftermath of complete memory loss which may require round-the-clock custodial care.

As per studies related to the cognitive effects of alcoholism to the human brain, women are more prone to mental side effects than men. The vulnerability of the human brain can also manifest in the condition called frontal lobe deficits. The frontal lobe is mainly responsible for brain functions such learning and memory.

How to Address these Mental Side Effects

As with any other form of addiction, addressing problems related to alcoholism require an effective treatment, commitment to sobriety, and several follow-ups. Most of the time, people who have been affected with alcoholism for a long time have already had suffered mental and physical deterioration. Treatments may offer improvement of condition, but it is expected of the alcohol-dependent individual to go through the process of detoxification, withdrawal, as well as psychological conditioning.

It is also recommended that a person consults an addiction recovery specialist when addressing the problem of alcoholism. An abrupt abstinence can do more harm than good. Therefore, having an expert to guide you throughout the journey to recovery is immensely helpful. Making improvements – no matter how little is a good indication that a treatment is working well.

Medical trainers look to virtual reality tech

Surgeons are embracing technology’s cutting edge, using the latest in augmented, virtual and mixed reality, to transform medical training.

Among the devices the Royal College of Surgeons is planning to explore is the Microsoft HoloLens, a mixed reality headset, released to developers this year, which shows hovering 3D holograms.

The college said it was teaming up with education group Pearson, to harness immersive technologies for training students.

Mark Christian, global director of immersive learning at Pearson, said that with the HoloLens headset they could explore the possibility of creating realistic holograms to allow students to practise surgical procedures.

He said the approach could avoid traditional cadaver-based training. “You have schools like Case Western Reserve University that have that as their stated goal – within two years to do away with wet labs,” he said.

The potential for such technologies, he added, would be further boosted through the development of haptic technologies, which let wearers of the HoloLens and other devices, such as virtual reality headsets, experience other sensations, such as touch.

Impression of ‘augmented reality’ seen with a HoloLens device.

Immersive technologies could also prove a boon in the field of imaging; using the HoloLens doctors could explore entire brains, in images built up from MRI scans, floating in front of their eyes. “It’s there, [in] actual 3D,” he said.

Shafi Ahmed, council member of the Royal College of Surgeons, said the technologies were the future when it came to education. “[In the next five years] I think most people will be taught with this AR, VR, mixed reality,” he said. “Learning will change immeasurably.”

He added: “We are rebuilding [the college] for 2020. In that new classroom environment there will be no space for cadavers, it’ll be case-based anatomy, it’ll be teaching and learning using HoloLens and virtual reality – really disrupting 200 years worth of surgical training.”

But it might be some time before cadavers are completely replaced by technology. Andrew Reed, chief executive of the Royal College of Surgeons, noted the college would continue to offer cadaveric courseselsewhere in the UK in partnership with other faculties.

Ahmed, who is a cancer surgeon at Barts Health NHS trust and co-founder of Medical Realities, a company working with augmented and virtual reality, is a pioneering figure in the world of medical technology. In April 2014 he live-streamed an operation using the augmented reality device Google Glass, and in May this year he live-streamed the first 360-degree video of an operation.

He stressed that that approach was not a gimmick. His vision, he said, was to shake-up surgical training, and do away with traditional approaches whereby students in theatre barely caught a glimpse of procedures, while democratising access to training across the world. “Two-thirds of the population, five billion people out of seven billion do not have access to safe and affordable surgery,” he said.

Among other devices under development around the world are alternative approaches to hologram technology, such as that from the company Holoxica, which aims to project 3D holograms into a space without headsets.

And augmented reality is also finding its niche. Xpert Eye by Ama is based on smart glasses that allow doctors to remotely provide advice and support to those wearing the glasses, in what the creators dub a “see what I see solution”.

It was not only doctors that could benefit from the new wave of technology, said Ahmed, pointing out that immersive approaches could aid patients too.

“The real value of this stuff is already shown in patients with anxiety attacks, phobias, pain relief, and also in patient education,” said Ahmed, pointing out that VR headsets offered patients a chance to see what would happen to them during a procedure, or even watch their own surgery in retrospect.

Christian agreed, saying technologies like the HoloLens could offer patients a view of the inside of their own bodies. “I think people rationalise things more in a visual way,” said Christian. “We know that an informed patient [has] better outcomes.”

A Look at 2 Cases: How HBOT Helped in Autism and Brain Injury Treatment

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) has emerged as an effective treatment for a number of medical conditions. There are conditions in which conventional therapies have not proved to be effective. In some of such conditions, HBOT has proved its potential to be considered as a viable treatment option. After experiencing HBOT’s benefits, many people are using a portable hyperbaric chamber in their homes, offices, and clinics to continue getting the therapy’s beneficial effects.

Autism and Traumatic Brain Injury are two such conditions, in which several patients have experienced substantial improvements with HBOT. Let’s look at 2 cases – a child with autism and a veteran with brain injury – and know how HBOT helped significantly in their improvement.

HBOT for Callum – Young Boy with Autism

Callum, a young boy with severe autism, had his communication abilities limited to slapping, biting and screaming tantrums. Callum’s mother, Lee Frost, took her son for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy treatment in a high-pressure oxygen chamber, for 3 months in 2013. Disheartened by an inadequate number of approved treatments for Callum, Ms. Frost came across HBOT through online research.

After getting the therapy, Callum, about 5 years of age now, is able to talk in sentences and get dressed up on his own in the morning before going to kindergarten, stated Ms. Frost. The therapy involved breathing pure oxygen inside a hyperbaric chamber for about 75 minutes at a time.

Dietary changes were also included in his treatment. Callum still has to go a long way, however, the child he is now, is a quite a different child, said Ms. Frost, living in White Rock at British Columbia in Canada.

HBOT for Ben Parkinson – Veteran with Brain Injury

Ben Parkinson was only 22 years old when a bomb blast at Afghanistan in 2006 left him with severe injuries. He lost both the legs and suffered major damages to his brain, arms, pelvis, skull and spine. Ever since, he is struggling to overcome these injuries.

However, Parkinson began a controversial treatment – Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. He, along with another injured veteran, Stephen Thomas, underwent HBOT, which involves inhaling 100% oxygen in a hyperbaric chamber at an atmospheric pressure which is up to twice the normal. Oxygen is supplied through a mask in the enclosed chamber. Just after one session of HBOT, Parkinson said that he was already experiencing its benefits.

Most of the specialists would state that about 8 years after the incident, no treatment would be likely to cause any improvement in a case of serious brain injury. However, Professor Philip James, who has been advising on Parkinson’s treatment, is quite optimistic.

He stated that so far, Ben made a remarkable recovery, and he is quite a brave young man. But his head injury hasn’t recovered. Parkinson gets severe fatigue that would certainly improve , according to what the Professor thinks. The speech of Parkinson is barely understandable sometimes, but it’s better at other times. This too would improve, as expected by the Professor.

Professor James illustrated that the treatment course depends on patients individually. It can be quite strenuous and there is no quick fix. Ben was probably going to undergo 21-hour sessions over a month, and was then going to be reviewed.

HBOT is always administered under the supervision of an authorized medical professional, whether the therapy is given to a patient at a clinic or hospital, or at a home or office in a portable hyperbaric chamber.

Although not approved by FDA for treatment of autism, brain injury and several other medical conditions, many patients and families with patients have reported of the remarkable benefits HBOT can provide in such conditions. Nowadays, HBOT treatment is offered by a number of clinics, alternative medicine centers and medical spas. Many companies, like OxyHealth LLC, offer portable hyperbaric chambers for use at home, office and clinic.

Based on the huge and increasing curiosity in extending existence span and common nicely becoming, it is no shock to see massive income investing to make greater funds in that arena.  Just yesterday the website for Google’s contender, Calico, went live with a still extremely cryptic site.  When Google entered the scene final yr, Calico did not draw much attention, regardless of announcement of rock star Artwork Levenson as CEO.

In the planet of “look younger/really feel younger” charlatans, Dr. Artwork Levenson Ph.D is no carnival barker.  He is a renowned molecular biologist who ran Genentech since 1995 and continued his reign publish acquisition by Roche Pharmaceuticals in 2009 for $ 46.8 billion.  On Levenson’s watch, Genentech launched breakthrough therapies for treating cancer like Avastin and Herceptin.  He was named a single of Corporate America’s most-respected CEOs and Genentech was regularly recognized as a single of the country’s very best employers, attributed in huge degree to the company’s special culture Levenson developed and protected. He stays concerned in Genentech as chairman and is also chairman of Apple, chosen to replace Steve Jobs.  (Maybe connected to cracking the code on aging, he’s figured out how to be in more than a single location at a time.)  Levenson was also on the board of Google but resigned in Oct, 2009, a number of months following Google CEO Eric Schmidt resigned, ostensibly to stay away from difficulties from a FTC inquiry about antitrust inquiries between Apple and Google.  It will be fascinating to see if concerns emerge relating to the Google-backed Calico endeavor.

However Calicolabs.com doesn’t offer you significantly of what’s to come, it’s hard to picture Google could have discovered a far better leader for the “moonshot thinking” needed to increase daily life span and quality than Artwork Levenson.  If the mark he made on healthcare and corporate America in his 1st 63 years on this planet are indicative of his following 63 years, Calico will genuinely be worth watching.

CVS Dominates Walgreen In Retail Clinics As Obamacare Individuals Look for Care

CVS/Caremark (CVS) has a dominating lead in the quantity of retail clinics with much more than double that of its nearest rival, Walgreens (WAG), according to a new report.

Tom Charland of Merchant Medication, a well being care consulting company that tracks retail clinic development, stated CVS now has 836 of its Minute Clinics opened in 28 states, in contrast to just 388 clinics for Walgreens in 19 states. Meanwhile, CVS also continues to open clinics up at a a lot more rapidly fee.

Retail health clinics are typically staffed by superior degreed nurses known as nurse practitioners who treat schedule maladies like strep throat or pink eye but these suppliers are expanding into other primary care arenas this kind of as providing vaccinations and continual care management.

These clinics are largely run by merchants with pharmacies such as CVS, Walgreens, Wal-Mart (WMT) and Target Target (TGT) as properly as some grocers like Kroger Kroger (KR). Kroger is ranked third on Merchant Medicine’s list with 119 clinics followed by Wal-Mart with 92 and Target with 70.

But Merchant Medicine’s report signifies there is ample marketplace opportunities for all of these retailers and grocers given they have a tendency to have retail clinics in just a fraction of their retailers. CVS, for illustration, has clinics in ten percent of its stores while Walgreen Walgreen has clinics in just four.7 percent of its stores.

CVS has taken on a far more aggressive posture in partnering with traditional well being care methods. Each Walgreen and CVS are linking more closely with standard health techniques and hospitals but Charland signifies in a companion post to his report that CVS’ Minute Clinic may possibly have a a lot more established brand.

“MinuteClinic has earned a particular status between the healthcare establishment, forcing that establishment to recognize the retail clinic motion as a reputable part of the overall health- care ecosystem,” Charland wrote in his report published this week.

CVS chief healthcare officer Andy Sussman told attendees last fall at the second annual Forbes Healthcare Summit in New York that the number of MinuteClinics will expand to far more than one,500 within 4 years. Walgreens, meanwhile, has created no guarantees on potential growth targets for its Walgreen Healthcare Clinics.

The retailers see massive prospective as millions of newly insured Americans underneath the Reasonably priced Care Act seem for affordable major care. While eight million Americans chose health ideas on government exchanges, they tended to have higher deductibles so these newly insurerd may possibly search to merchants as a much less high-priced 1st option. The retail clinics also see opporunities is analysts predictions of a physician shortage become reality.

Sussman’s remarks at the Forbes Summit, along with other authorities on a panel named, “The Walk-In Clinic Revolution,” can be witnessed below.

Questioning how Obamacare will have an effect on retail well being and outpatient care? The Forbes eBook Within Obamacare: The Fix For America’s Ailing Health Care Program answers that question and far more. Obtainable now at Amazon and Apple.

Jeremy Hunt asked health-related chief to look at research backing homeopathy

Jeremy Hunt

The well being secretary, Jeremy Hunt, asked the chief health care officer to assessment 3 sector-funded research in favour of homeopathy, emails released below freedom of data laws have revealed.

The emails demonstrate the well being secretary asked Prof Dame Sally Davies to appear at 3 scientific studies funded by Laboratoires Boiron, the world’s largest producer of homeopathic items.

When he was appointed health secretary in 2011, medics raised concerns in excess of Hunt’s preceding comments about the value of homeopathy, which is regarded by scientists to be medically ineffective. In a letter to a constituent in 2007, he mentioned homeopathic care was “enormously valued by 1000′s of individuals” and advised it must carry on to be supplied by England’s well being service.

The emails, first reported by BuzzFeed, display Hunt wrote to Davies in December 2013 asking her to overview the reviews and a letter from his workplace to a third get together explained it was “important we do not price reduction distinct approaches of treatment method if they demonstrate to be efficient”. Even so, the chief healthcare officer replied that it was “challenging to draw valuable conclusions” from two of the trials and a third had issues with its scientific method.

Sources shut to the overall health secretary said Hunt had merely been passing on the reviews to the chief health-related officer soon after they had been provided to him by an MP. “He does not express an view on homeopathy and he is not an advocate,” one particular source said. “An MP gave Jeremy these reviews and asked him to seem into them. Simply because he does not have an view, he passed them on to the chief healthcare officer and asked her to look into them. He was just the conduit. He expressed the chief medical officer’s view when he wrote back to the MP.”

NHS trusts are free of charge to fund homeopathic treatment options if they wish, though use of the substitute medication has been widely discredited. Final month, a review by Australian scientists concluded that homeopathy was no much more efficient than a placebo.

The draft paper by Australia’s National Well being and Health care Analysis Council assessed investigation into the effectiveness of the substitute medicine on 68 health circumstances and discovered was “no trustworthy evidence that homeopathy is powerful”.

Homeopathy is claimed to “allow likes remedy like” by making use of very diluted kinds of the ailment it is treating. “No excellent-top quality, effectively-designed research with ample participants for a meaningful result reported either that homeopathy induced better well being enhancements than a substance with no effect on the health condition (placebo), or that homeopathy induced overall health enhancements equal to individuals of yet another remedy,” the report’s summary said.

Look of polio-like illness in California"s children perplexes medical doctors

Polio virus

Medical professionals are perplexed by the emergence of a cluster of cases of polio-like illness in young children in California who appear to have suffered paralysis in a single or a lot more limbs.

Up to 20 suspect circumstances have been reported, even though some are even now being investigated. Five will be the subject of a presentation at the forthcoming American Academy of Neurology conference in April.

But so far, no links have been established between the situations, which professionals say is not polio itself. Two young children have been recognized with enterovirus-68, which is from the very same household of viruses as polio.

Dr Keith Van Haren at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford University warned that any little one showing a sudden onset of weakness in their limbs or signs of paralysis need to be instantly witnessed by a medical doctor. “The illness resembles but is not the very same as polio,” he mentioned. “But this is severe. Most of the youngsters we have seen so far have not recovered use of their arm or their leg.”

“This is undoubtedly not polio,” mentioned Dr Robin Luff, chairman of the specialist overall health panel of the British Polio Basis. “Even so a single of the recurrent themes in the discussion is the repeated emphasis that polio is potentially nevertheless about and not to decrease our guards.”

Because paralysing condition does not have to be reported by doctors, in contrast to polio, it is challenging to know whether or not this is just a randomly happening cluster of circumstances that would not have been observed if they had been geographically spread out, stated Luff. Paralysis can be caused by a quantity of viruses, which includes adenoviruses as effectively as enteroviruses.

Enterovirus-68, which is very rare, “is primarily associated with reasonably benign upper respiratory infections – coughs and colds,” explained Luff. “It is reported to trigger occasional instances of paralysis.”

Since it is transmitted by water droplets in coughs and sneezes, it must be more very easily transmitted than polio, which depends on the oral-faecal route. However only about 20 cases have been reported – not all of them confirmed and potentially not all in youngsters – in the course of a 12 months.

Polio was eradicated decades ago from the US and the United kingdom, but vaccination of infants is still really essential because of the danger that it could be reimported. There are just three countries in the world in which the ailment is even now endemic – Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria – but situations sporadically occur when individuals travel. The ease with which polio can return to an region that was totally free of it was not too long ago proven by an outbreak in Syria.

It really is Planet Encephalitis Day. But to survivors like me today is Look After Your Brain Day | Simon Hattenstone

human brain encephalitis

We give little imagined to hunting soon after the brain, despite spending much of life attending to the rest of the physique. Photograph: Sebastian Kaulitzki/Alamy

When I was a minor boy, I had a sense of adventure. Not a huge or dramatic sense, just in an daily way. My mother and father purchased me a mustard-coloured Chopper bike for my ninth birthday and I loved undertaking errands for them – delivering cakes to elderly aunts, popping into outlets, making myself valuable. I never deemed just what it took to complete this kind of simple chores – balance, sense of route, hearing, fitness, vision, memory. Like most of us, I took my brain for granted.

On I rode for the rest of that year, till I was stung by a bee and fell off my bike. I suffered a horrible lower to my knee when I was handled in hospital a stone was left in the wound, it went septic, and I contracted encephalitis. I did not ride that bike yet again for near on three many years.

Nowadays is Globe Encephalitis Day, the perfect time to think what it signifies to believe, and to thank your brain for all that it does for you with out a 2nd considered (so to talk). Encephalitis is inflammation of the brain caused by infection (generally viral) or by an inappropriate automobile-immune response to the brain. There are now 500,000 men and women impacted throughout the world each and every yr, like up to six,000 in England. In 2010, encephalitis induced an estimated 120,000 deaths.

Soon after falling off the bike and waking up one day with a large temperature, a stiff neck and a horrific discomfort drilling via my eyes, I did not go back to college for two years, and it was three years prior to I was back in a regular school. When not in hospital, I lay in bed in a dark area, curtains shut, windows closed, lights off, hermetically sealed from the planet. I did not see close friends, did not listen to music, did not observe Television.

I underwent an severe personality alter, wrote poems about the electrical soreness going through my brain, could not see straight, usually felt sick, grew to become anorexic, received pneumonia into the bargain since my immune program broke down, could not piss correctly, could not shit correctly, couldn’t quit hiccupping for months, grew to become angry and surly, had a continuous high temperature, developed this kind of a severe sore throat that it resulted in a hole in my palate, thought I had gone mad, was put on antidepressants, and sent to a psychiatrist who hated the globe with a passion. On best of this the medical doctor speculated that my mother was struggling from Munchausen by proxy, and that I was a victim of her issue.

I was one of the fortunate ones – I was left with mild depression and constant headaches for many years. The unlucky ones have been deaf, disabled, epileptic, amnesiac, aphasic or dead.

Encephalitis is this kind of a cruel condition because it is frequently misdiagnosed – even right now. And that delay in diagnosis can have fatal consequences. Once more, I was fortunate – when I was accurately diagnosed much more than a year after turning out to be sick, my brilliant brain surgeon stated I would created history – getting survived so extended with a minimal-grade edition of encephalitis with no popping my clogs. As for the medical doctor who informed me I was a malingerer and that it was all my mother’s fault – nicely, we decided it was time to appear for a new family members GP.

Forty years on, I appear at my encephalitis as enriching. Never get me wrong, I’m not thankful for it – that truly would be pushing it. But I do think that when I ultimately came out of it and returned to the planet, I did so as a entirely diverse individual. As soon as, a good friend read through my palm and was freaked out when she found I had two daily life lines – and that is how I felt, that I would had two lives for the price tag of 1. There was me before encephalitis, and me afterwards, with extremely little connection amongst the two.

My mother tells me the pre-enceph Simon was a pretty lad, but to be trustworthy I don’t keep in mind significantly of him – he was clever, conscientious, untroubled. The individual who emerged was a lot more difficult – chippy, politicised, emotional, with a useless sense of route.

Until not too long ago I believed I was a freak. Who else has two lives? But a handful of years in the past I became a patron of the Encephalitis Society and identified that virtually all the survivors divided their lives in two. What I also discovered is that, regardless of their struggling, survivors emerge with a new respect for the brain – specially a healthier one. We commit so significantly of our lifestyle attending to our bodies – priming , primping and pampering, typically at substantial cost – and shell out so little thought to looking after our brains.

Today is the very first World Encephalitis Day, and probably the greatest thing we can do to acknowledge it is end for a 2nd to shell out homage to the wonder that is the human brain, and think about how very best to nourish it. Wholesome diet regime, fresh air, preserve match, ample sleep, de-pressure – none of this is rocket science. Creating on the Encephalitis Society web site, Gabby Timpson, a former nurse, says it wasn’t right up until she received unwell that she realised just how significantly care her brain needs. “We need to remember our brains as well as our bodies,” she writes. “They can be very fragile and want nurturing and tender loving care, so go simple and be gentle on yourselves.” It’s a lesson we can all discover.

Drug Developers Look for Severe Clinical Phenotypes To Ignite Medical Discovery

Drug Discovery: Empiricism vs Insight

How do you go about discovering new medicines?

You may well get started empirically, and look all around for one thing that appears to work — willow bark for soreness, for instance, or an anti-tuberculosis pill for depression.  This method relies on what writer Morton Meyers calls “happy accidents,” and accounts for a remarkable number of existing therapeutics (most of them, Nassim Taleb asserts).   Supporting this seemingly radical conjecture, a  2011 paper in Nature Evaluations Drug Discovery reported that among 1999 and 2008, much more FDA-approved very first-in-class tiny molecules have been derived from phenotypic screening (an empiric strategy) than from insight-oriented, target-based drug discovery.

In this age of Large Data, there is substantial curiosity in making an attempt to industrialize serendipity in silico, and use huge datasets and wise algorithms to create empirically-derived novel insights and new therapies.    While this nut hasn’t yet been cracked, a lot of clever data scientists are busily doing work on this challenge.

The second way to technique drug discovery is mechanistically: figure out the trigger of a illness, and use this understanding to form remedy.  This represents the promise of molecular medication, although realizing this dream has proved considerably a lot more difficult than a lot of anticipated, due to the sheer complexity of biology, and the challenge of moving amongst DNA and ailment.  Nevertheless, when this approach operates, the good results can be so compelling, so logical, so validating that it motivates researchers to carry on trying.

The sophisticated triumph of the cancer drug Gleevec, for instance, inspired cancer researchers to seek out other mechanistically-informed treatments — even though for years, Gleevec remained one of molecular medicine’s number of uncontested good results stories.

Captivated by PCSK9

Much more lately, the protagonist function in the molecular medicine narrative has been assumed by the family of lipid-decreasing drugs now in development that target PCSK9.  Amgen and Regeneron/Sanofi lead this race, with numerous other folks not also far behind.

What can make PCSK9 so captivating is that the discovery and improvement process really worked the way it is supposed to, but in practice rarely does.  The examine of two French households with unusually higher cholesterol amounts and a strong historical past of heart illness led to the identification of a issue referred to as PCSK9, which was subsequently shown to increase cholesterol when overactive.  Extra study – nicely described by Gina Kolata in The New York Times — demonstrated that people with a reduced exercise of PCSK9 had minimal cholesterol levels and a markedly decrease cardiac risk.  Extensive animal research strongly reinforced these findings.  Collectively, these data suggested that a medication that could minimize PCSK9 action or function would signify a potent therapeutic.  The final results of clinical trials carried out to date appear to support this optimism.

The PCSK9 knowledge – particularly its elegance and relative ease — looks to have transfixed every drug developer who’s touched it, at after reaffirming their belief in the promise of molecular medicine and stimulating their drive to re-produce this obvious good results.

Extreme Phenotypes

The important beginning level – not remarkably – is phenotype, ideally, an excessive phenotype of obvious health-related interest.  As the mentioned clinical researcher Stephen O’Rahilly has eloquently observed, “The study of rare folks with extreme disturbances of their physiology has long had an effect in terms of scientific comprehending grossly disproportionate to the infrequency of the distinct condition getting investigated.”

Studying these sufferers, O’Rahilly writes, can assist both these distinct patients even though possibly offering insight into broader physiological concerns.

Archibald Garrod’s traditional study of a patient with black urine in 1901 led to the “inborn error in metabolism” idea, anticipating by forty many years the “one gene, one particular enzyme” notion, as Brown and Goldstein level out in their Nobel tackle.

Brown and Goldstein’s personal transformative function on cholesterol transport was similarly rooted in a small population of sufferers – homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia [FH]–  with an intense phenotype — extraordinarily substantial lipid levels.  Their discoveries contributed to the advancement of the statins, medicines now taken by hundreds of thousands of men and women with elevated cholesterol to decrease lipids and lessen cardiac chance.   (Sadly, the individuals with homozygous FH  not only have the highest amounts of lipids, but these lipid ranges are only minimally impacted by statins even so, there is hope these sufferers could derive added lipid-lowering advantage from the new medicines targeting PCSK9.)

Pancreatic cancer patients forced to look for existence-conserving surgical treatment in Germany

Individuals with pancreatic cancer are paying for surgical procedure abroad when it is not presented on the NHSNHS, as the amount of cases of the fifth most deadly type of cancer rises.

Deaths from pancreatic cancer could overtake those from breast cancer by 2030, say authorities. A number of dozen individuals have paid to have lifestyle-saving surgical treatment at Heidelberg university hospital in Germany because, under guidelines for treating pancreatic cancer in England, some sufferers are being told their cancer is also far sophisticated or has spread to other organs, generating surgical treatment inadvisable.

Experts say clinicians in some EuropeEuropean hospitals are significantly less “danger averse” than in England and more prepared to carry out surgical procedure. In wellness techniques in many EU nations, individuals have direct accessibility to a advisor or surgeon and wellness insurance schemes pay the cost of the surgical procedure.

A report published two weeks in the past by the all-party parliamentary group on pancreatic cancer referred to as for radical improvements in NHS remedy of the situation, which kills about 8,500 people a 12 months. It factors out that survival rates for pancreatic cancer have not enhanced in the Uk for about 40 many years, and that whilst 20% of individuals could benefit from surgical procedure, only 10% are operated on.

A lot of sufferers are not diagnosed early sufficient to benefit from surgical treatment, and some see their GP four or 5 occasions with signs and symptoms before they are referred to a hospital for investigation. Signs can selection from abdominal ache and persistent indigestion to jaundice, and are often misdiagnosed as other situations, this kind of as dyspepsia or ulcers. Richard Charnley, a advisor pancreatic surgeon at the Freeman hospital in Newcastle, explained: “One particular of the primary difficulties in diagnosing the illness is choosing up the early indicators and, unless of course a patient presents with jaundice, GPs may possibly not consider pancreatic cancer as a possibility.

“Then they may be referred for an endoscopy, which can take a few weeks, and then eventually a CT scan, which will take longer, and this picks up a lesion in the pancreas. Regrettably, delays are built into the program and GPs need to have to elevate pancreatic cancer on their radar.”

The prognosis even right after an operation is not very good – only three.five% of sufferers survive for five many years following successful surgery. On the constructive side, the amount of specialist pancreatic cancer surgeons has risen in recent many years and individuals are noticed in 25 specialist centres about the country, which enables surgeons to boost their abilities by treating a high variety of sufferers and a very good “situation mix”, which is crucial for maintaining competence. The quantity of patients surviving for a single yr soon after surgical procedure rose from 13.seven% in 1999 to 18.three% in 2009, according to Charnley, who is chairman of a expert entire body representing pancreatic cancer surgeons.

“An additional dilemma is that there are not numerous efficient drugs made to treat the problem, and we need a lot more study into what operates nicely,” he mentioned.

Steve Lewis, 59, from Swansea, was diagnosed in December last yr soon after seeing his GP only when. “I went to my GP as I had been getting steady indigestion for some time, and she referred me to hospital immediately. I was noticed inside of two weeks, had some investigations and a CT scan. I was then advised it was inoperable, which naturally I was not that content about, and was started out on a program of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. I would lost around 15kg in bodyweight before that, but following radiotherapy, I commenced to put fat back on.

“Before my radiotherapy, the surgeons in Heidelberg agreed with my consultants here that surgical treatment was not a good idea, but later, as I was undertaking properly, they explained they would be prepared to consider a shot at it, so I went for the operation in September. Unfortunately, as soon as they had gone in, they discovered that the tumour was wrapped around one particular of the arteries, and it would be also risky to proceed, so they stopped the operation. They had told me this was a probability, so I had to accept it. I took all around 10 days to recover in hospital and I’m now discussing next steps with my advisor in Swansea.” The operation expense €51,000, which is becoming paid for under Lewis’s firm wellness-insurance coverage scheme, and the hospital has agreed to refund a massive proportion of this as the operation was not finished. Lewis mentioned his expertise with the NHS in Wales was very excellent, but that GPs in general need to be more aware of the symptoms of the illness.

The report by the by the all-celebration parliamentary group calls for a “wholesale assessment” of pathways amongst primary and secondary care for referrals and investigation of the illness, a comprehensive nationwide audit of pancreatic cancer therapy comparable to that for bowel cancer, and an awareness-raising campaign about the symptoms of the ailment.

At an event at the Homes of Parliament to launch the report, the health secretary, Jeremy Hunt, stated pancreatic cancer was a condition that the NHS had been “least successful” at treating in recent many years. “We have invested £140m on bettering early diagnosis of cancer and we need to do the exact same as we did for breast cancer, namely, to set up targets and set better standards. I know this is a actual difficulty, as I have noticed a variety of circumstances in my personal constituency the place it has not been picked up early adequate,” he said.

The United kingdom has lagged behind many other European countries in survival prices across all cancers, with the most latest figures displaying the Uk coming 27th out of 35 countries surveyed.
