8 Monday Morning Habits of Successful People You Should Adopt

Monday: it’s a day many people dread because it signals the beginning of the work week for most. Going into a Monday with that attitude, though, is likely to put you in a negative mood for the entire day. Instead, why not view Mondays as a new beginning? It’s a chance to get back out there and succeed. While you may not necessarily want your weekend to end, it will, so you might as well embrace Monday. Many successful people have. They start their work week out with a number of habits that put them in the right frame of mind to get ahead. Here are eight of these habits that you should consider adopting.

  1. They Start the Day Early

These successful people don’t hit the snooze button multiple times or have an alarm set for the last possible minute. Instead, they’re up early so they have plenty of time to get ready for the day, eat breakfast, take care of any chores they need to do, and still have plenty of time to make it to work. They ignore that little voice that says sleeping for a few more minutes isn’t a problem.

Being up early gives them time to really wake up. They also don’t have to rush, don’t stress if traffic is backed up, and have some peaceful time to themselves before the Monday rush starts.

  1. They Eat Breakfast

You’ve probably heard multiple times that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but how many people take the time to really eat a healthy breakfast? Many grab an energy bar or something similar, but those meals on the go are often not very healthy at all. If you get up early, you should have plenty of time to make yourself a healthy breakfast that includes a serving of fruit and a source of protein.

  1. They Get Motivated

Instead of dreading Monday, these successful people take a little bit of time to motivate themselves. They get pumped up for the week, so they feel like they can take on anything. Some people spent a little time reading a motivational book, while others listen to motivational speakers on their way to work. Taking this time to get motivated will change your entire perspective on Monday and on the work week in general.

  1. They Exercise

You don’t have to go to the gym the first thing Monday morning to start your week off right, but you should get up and move around. Successful people have more energy, think clearer, and feel happier on Mondays because they exercise before work. All you need to do is spend about 20 minutes doing a physical activity. You can go jogging around the block, lift weights, do pushups, or any combination of different exercises. What’s important is that you get those endorphins flowing.

  1. They Don’t Get Lost in a Sea of Emails

Dealing with your email inbox may be one of the most dreaded things you have to do on Monday morning, but highly successful people don’t let themselves get bogged down in all of those unimportant messages that came in over the weekend. Instead, they create filters that send all the junk messages to another folder, leaving only the important items for them to deal with. It’s also worth taking the time to unsubscribe from email lists or newsletters that you never read.

If you’re tired of spending too much time in your inbox on Monday, this is a great way of clearing it out. It also helps prevent you from missing important messages that might get lost in the clutter or accidentally get deleted.

  1. They Leave Time for Emergencies

While it’s important to have a schedule to help you navigate through the day, you also need to leave yourself some unscheduled time to deal with emergencies and other unexpected things. Mondays are often filled with sudden tasks that you weren’t expecting to deal with, so it’s always a good idea to have a little extra time in your schedule so you don’t have to bump anything back.

  1. They Say Hello to Everyone Face to Face

It’s important to say hello or good morning to your coworkers every day, but it’s especially important to do so on Monday. Those people who hate Mondays are likely to be dragging or feeling worn out even though the day hasn’t even really started yet. Saying good morning and spending just a little bit of time talking to them can help reinforce that sense of team and community.

This will also help you. As you interact with others, you’ll pick up on some of their emotions and energy, too. You’ll feel reconnected with your team and ready to work with them to battle whatever comes your way. Even if you don’t have time to talk to someone, remember that a genuine smile is often all it takes to brighten someone’s day.

  1. They Take Time to Prepare

If your previous Friday afternoon went as planned, you should walk into a clean desk and nicely organized projects. If it didn’t, take a little time on Monday morning to organize your desk and prepare for the day and the week. Being organized will help ensure you don’t waste time trying to find documents, emails, and other items you need for meetings or projects.

Also, take this time to update your current projects and your to-do list. Look at where you stand on each project and what needs to get done during the coming week in order to stay on deadline. Add these items to your to-do list along with any related tasks that need to get done.

You may also want to set goals. Highly successful people have several goals they want to accomplish each day and each week. Weekly goals give them something to work towards. This creates a series of small achievements they can celebrate throughout the week, giving them a morale boost and propelling them towards the next goal. On Friday afternoon, they can take pride in the goals they achieved, even if they didn’t achieve them all.

Natural Ways to Combat Addictive Habits That Run in the Family

Addiction is a major problem in America. From serious problems with drugs and alcohol, to even sugar or internet addiction, millions of families struggle to overcome the diseases of addiction and addictive behaviors. As you probably know, trouble with addiction can often run in families, due to both genetic and environmental factors.

Unfortunately, children are the ones who usually suffer most from the addiction patterns in their parents. In fact, roughly 12 percent of American children live with a parent who is addicted to a harmful substance. These addictions can contribute to youth drop-out rates and putting future success at risk. If addictive habits run in your family, no matter what those addictions may be, you are probably concerned with breaking that cycle. Fortunately, there are natural ways to combat addictive habits that could otherwise span generations.

  1. Be honest about the problem
If yourself or someone close to you is exhibiting signs of addictive behaviors, don’t try to sweep your concerns or feelings under the rug. It’s not easy to face these things head-on, but it’s the best way to heal the problem before it grabs hold — increasing the risk for future generations.

  2. Take time to relax
Addictions usually begin as a way to escape or relax. But people who learn to do these things in a more healthful way might be able to curb addictive behaviors. What helps you or your loved one relax or escape reality for a little while? Perhaps it’s the basketball court, the gym, or a great book. Many find that formal relaxation tools such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga are very helpful.

  3. Try biofeedback
Brain wave biofeedback (also called neurofeedback) is a natural and non-invasive therapy that teaches patients how to modify their own brain wave patterns. It has been shown to help with stress, anxiety, ADHD, and yes, addiction. If someone in your family shows potential for addictive behaviors that concern you, it could be worth a try.

  4. Talk about it
If you or your family has already experienced the struggles of addiction, it’s important to share your story. Share your personal and family experience to offer comfort and hope to others. Putting your energy into helping other families who face similar challenges can give you a new lease on life — and a positive reason to keep moving in the right direction.

  5. Exercise
There is recent scientific evidence that exercise can have an amazing impact on overcoming addiction, and play a role in decreasing your risk for substance abuse. Physical activity can help manage substance cravings and withdrawal by increasing blood flow to the brain, as well as sending endorphins and other feel-good chemicals throughout the body.

  6. Diet
People with addictive habits or out-right addictions generally don’t eat very well and eat or drink too much junk. This can stimulate the body’s cravings for addictive substances and make addiction recovery more difficult. A healthy diet can help give your body the tools it needs to combat addiction.

If you are concerned about the potential for a family cycle of addiction, the best thing you can do is reach out for help. The sooner you recognize the potential for a problem, the more productive and effective your intervention will be. Don’t be afraid to reach out — future generations will thank you.

Top 8 Bad Habits That Damage Your Hair You Should Avoid Right Now

Both men and women love to have shiny, strong and healthy hair that helps reflect one’s personality. People have looked for centuries for ways to maintain their hair healthily. Many people have naturally luxurious locks whereas a few people complain of hair troubles such as hair loss, brittle, and dull hair, as well as lifeless hair. Basically, health problems and genetics have a huge impact on your hair’s health. Apart from that, there are many habits you are doing daily that can damage your hair. To know what they are, continue reading my article. Let’s check out!

  1. Have A Poor Diet

Your diet not only has a direct impact on the skin health but also on the hair health. To keep healthy, hair requires various minerals, vitamins, and proteins. Therefore, it is important to take a healthy diet to keep healthy hair. According to a study published in 2002 in Clinical and Experimental Dermatology, it has a relation between hair loss and nutritional factors. The study indicates the role of protein, essential amino acids, serum zinc and iron for hair growth. Thus, it is vital to add protein, iron, and vitamin E –rich foods to your daily diet to have healthy hair. In addition, you need to include some types of food containing trace minerals such as copper and zinc.  Keep in mind to avoid following a severely restrictive fad or crash diet, because it can cause nutrient deficiencies that can lead to thinning, hair loss, and brittle and dull hair.

  1. Avoid Stress

Stress is also one of the top bad habits that can damage your hair. Stress affects both one’s physical and mental health. It can even lead to hair loss. According to a study published in 2007 in the American Academy of Dermatology, stress can lead to dermatologic problems, such as brittle nails, acne, or even hair loss. During stress, the effect of neuropeptides, neurohormones, and neurotransmitters may influence the hair follicles’ cyclic activity significantly. Therefore, to prevent hair loss and combat stress, it’s advisable to do a few simple stress-buster exercises, practice deep breathing, and meditate.

  1. Wash Too Much

Over washing is also one of the top bad habits that can damage your hair.  If you use too much shampooing on the hair, it can remove the natural moisture from the hair and dry it out, leading to breakage. It is advised to wash your hair thrice a week. Wash your hair every 2 days if you are sweating or using many products. Remember to use the proper shampoo for your hair texture and type as well when washing because this will help add body, moisture, and beauty to the hair. Besides, people often mishandle the wet hair. After you wash, the protective cuticle is raised slightly, leaving your strands more vulnerable to breakage and fragile. Thus, you must stay away from aggressive towel drying.

  1. Take Hot Showers

Another bad habit that can damage your hair is taking hot showers. Everyone should take a shower daily to keep good hygiene. But taking long, hot showers can cause huge damage to the hair because the heat can strip away the natural oil (serum) of your hair, leaving the hair become brittle and dry. This can make the hair more likely to falling out and breakage as well. To enjoy healthy hair, you need to take a shower with lukewarm water for 10 minutes, twice or thrice a week only. Then, you use cold water to lock in moisture for a final rinse because this will make the hair appear healthy and shiny. After showering, with the help of a soft towel, pat dry your skin and avoid rubbing the hair rigorously. Finally, let the hair dry on its own and don’t use a blow dryer.

  1. Infuse Hair With Chemical Products

Nowadays, many people depend on commercial shampoos, serums, gels as well as other hair styling products to keep their hair healthy. But many products with harmful chemicals can cause great damage to the hair and are not good for your hair. For example, hair dye has chemicals like ammonia and hydrogen peroxide, which can cause hair loss and thinning hair. Shampoos contain DHT (dihydrotestosterone) is another harmful chemical that can cause hair loss. Hair relaxers have sodium hydroxide, which can cause a scalp infection and weaken the hair at the same time. In fact, avoid applying harsh chemical-based products on your hair. Instead, you should use herbal products and natural homemade hair dyes and hair masks. They are not only inexpensive but also safe for your hair care.

  1. Tight Hairstyles

Tight hairstyles can cause hair breakage and hair loss because they put excessive tension on your hair follicles and weaken the roots. Wearing extensions and weaves also have the same effect. Director of Cosmetic and Clinical Research in Dermatology at Mt. Sinai Hospital in NY City, Dr. Joshua Zeichner describes that traction for a long time may cause inflammation at your hair roots and cause hair loss as well. It is advisable to follow a looser hairstyle, which is healthy and comfortable for your hair.

  1. Lack Of Sleep

When you have a good night’s sleep, it will leave your mind fresh after getting up. An enough sleep is also necessary to keep your scalp and hair healthy. Otherwise, lack of sleep results in unhealthy damaged hair leading to hair loss. Also, this helps keep you stress-free, which in turn helps keep your hair healthy.

  1. Swim In Chlorinated Water

A great activity to help you stay healthy and fit is swimming. It isn’t good for the hair if you swim in a chlorinated pool. In pools, there are more than one hundred chemical byproducts using chlorine as a disinfectant. The byproducts aren’t good for your health and hair as well. In fact, the buildup of chlorine in the hair can cause it to become fragile and frizzy. Chlorine can also fade away the natural oil covering hair shafts, which lead to loss of flexibility and shine, and making the hair more prone to breakage. Thus, to enjoy healthy hair, you should avoid this bad habit.

In fact, keep yourself a little careful and enjoy beautiful hair.

8 Preventable Habits that Can Shrink Our Brain

When you think about it, every thought and action we have is controlled by our brain. These include sleep, digestion, memories, movement and so on.  In my book, Path to a Healthy Mind & Body, I have found preventable habits that can shrink brain size and solutions to this universal problem.  According to Dr. Daniel Amen, “when we are obese, we can have a smaller brain”.  When we are balanced and fit, we have a balanced brain. When we invite health into our gut, we do the same to the brain.  If we have a sedentary lifestyle, our brain will suffer. But, that’s not all.

There are habits we do before age seventy that cause the brain to shrink!  To make matters worse, these same poor habits and toxic exposures can trigger autoimmune disorders. “The brain directly communicates with the gastrointestinal system through the vagus nerve.”(1) This means what we ingest is either feeding or poisoning our brain.

In a Hurry to Lose Our Mind

*Americans eat approximately150 pounds of sugar a year, which can cause decline in brain function. Insulin resistance and obesity has increased in the last two decades not only in adults but in children, with high blood sugar levels decreasing our children’s brain size. Interestingly enough, insulin resistance is found to begin in the brain first.(2) Roundup Ready™glyphosate, along with a western diet has the ability to induce disorders such as obesity, Alzheimer’s and depression.(3) About 422 million people suffer from the depilation effects from diabetes. Diabetes is related to changes in cognitive function and smaller brain size. (4) Advanced Glycation End products result from a domino effect set in motion anytime blood glucose increases. Dr. Agnes Flöel said:  “…even for people within the normal range of blood sugar, lowering their blood sugar levels could be a promising strategy for averting memory problems and cognitive decline as they age.”

*Trans-fats exert an inflammatory effect within the body that creates a stiffening of the arteries and constricted blood vessels. Trans-fats can pass the blood brain barrier and harm our brain. This can lead to less blood flow to the skin and much more serious side effects, leaving our brains smaller. Trans-fats can be found in pie crust, deep fried foods, margarine, canned frosting, non-dairy creamers, popcorn, and much more.  The average human life span can be cut short with AGE’s in the diet from fried and processed foods. There is mounting evidence that Advanced Glycation End Products caused by processed foods may be implicated in the development of the chronic degenerative diseases associated with aging, such as Cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease and Diabetes.

*Alcohol is not a health food. According to Biological Psychiatry, “alcoholics tend to have smaller brains than nonalcoholics.”(5) A study shows that brain size in alcoholics is also affected by their parents’ drinking, even before the alcoholic’s dependence begins.(6)

*There are myths that disease is caused by a chemical imbalance. And, because of this we are given chemicals to ingest. According to Robert Whitaker, U S Science Journalist, from ‘Anatomy of an Epidemic’, “increasing use of drugs only keeps patients stuck in the SICK role.”  Antipsychotic medications are documented as being linked to brain shrinkage as well as killing brain cells.(7)

*When suffering from depression, the brain does’t lack serotonin. Anti-depressants are big business and offer dangerous side effects that are harmful, including suicide. SSRI’s are associated with and causing brain atrophy.

*Our brain needs cholesterol to thrive. Depression, statin medications and a high-sugar diet causes inflammation and disrupts cholesterol balance, paving the way to a smaller brain size.

*With a diet full of stimulants we have about 1 in 3 people suffering from insomnia. Insomnia decreases brain size (8) and undermines adrenal gland function.

*According to Dr. Joseph McCaffrey, “elevated homocysteine levels directly attack the lining of blood vessels.” One drug of concern is aspirin, that can be hiding out in your medicine cabinet. Aspirin depletes folate acid levels and can interrupt homocysteine levels. An elevated plasma homocysteine level has been reported to be associated with various neuropsychiatric diseases(9) and a smaller brain size.(10)

7 Exposures that Kill Brain Cells

*Exposure to toxins can kill brain cells. Tobacco products, including cigarettes and chewing tobacco called NNK (pro-carcinogen), cause white blood cells in the body’s central nervous system to attack healthy brain cells. (11)

*Ketamine, an anesthetic, has been linked to the death of neurons and neuronal toxicity.  And, believe it or not, Ketamine is currently being investigated as an alternative treatment for depression.(12)

*Taking steroids can lead to elevated levels of testosterone which in turn can kill brain cells. Steroids, an anti inflammatory drug, may be an ingredient in your asthma inhaler.

*Dr. Russell Blaylock, “excitotoxins can excite cells to death.” Aspartame can lead to neuronal destruction and damage by causing brain fluid to thicken.(13) Fluoride can induce DNA damage and cell death “cytotoxicity.”(14) Fluoride can also be linked to Alzheimer’s and Dementia.”(15)

*Oxidative stress is about free radicals that are highly reactive forms of oxygen have an ability to kill brain cells. Why? Because with oxidative stress the body has a hard time detoxifying. “With increased oxidative stress, dopamine dies.”(16) “Dopamine is a neurotransmitter in charge of the brains’ reward and pleasure centers.”(17)

*Chronic Sleep deprivation can cause cell death.(18)

*A poor diet and toxic chemical exposures increases cancer risk. Statistics show 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer sometime in their life. (19) The drug of choice is Chemotherapy. Chemotherapy kills brain cells.(19a)

Consuming a daily dose of toxins, chemicals, genetically modified foods, refined sugar and poor choices of fats alters our energy and frequency at the cellular level and can lead to early signs of brain disorders and brain atrophy.  The sad news is, research suggest, a sick-brain is now quite common in age groups from 15-44.

The good news is: we can change our brains function and structure throughout our entire life. The Magic of the Mind by Connie Rogers: http://www.lifecoachradionetworks.com/articles/2014/5/28/the?rq=we%20can%20change

Dr Oz"s missed opportunity: scolding Trump for all his bad habits | Celine Gounder

On the The Dr Oz Show Thursday, Donald Trump spent only a fraction of the hour discussing his health, on his own terms. There’s still a lot that he – and, for that matter, Hillary Clinton – still haven’t told us, but a superficial, televised chat did little to change that.

Dr Mehmet Oz started off his interview by asking Trump how he stayed healthy. Oz didn’t delve much into the candidate’s diet, though Trump has bragged that he loves fast food. With a body mass index of 29.5, Trump is overweight – practically obese.

As for exercise, Trump says he golfs, but hasn’t much lately, and poked fun at President Barack Obama’s time on the green. “He could play on the PGA tour,” Trump said.

During a commercial break, Dr Oz explained that lack of sleep has been linked to weight gain, heart disease and some cancers. He went on to say that sleep helps regulate your immune system and strengthens your memories. But when Trump told Oz he doesn’t need much sleep, Oz didn’t delve into it.

An occupational hazard of running for president is all the handshaking, which exposes candidates to innumerable viruses and bacteria at a time when they’re exhausted. Trump, a self-professed germaphobe, no doubt carries his own stash of alcohol-based hand sanitizer on the road, as Obama does on the advice of his predecessor, but Oz didn’t inquire about that either.

Dr Oz then moved on to the “Review of Systems,” a long checklist of symptoms that’s usually part of the form you fill out in your doctor’s waiting room. It’s a tool doctors use to jog patients’ memories and elicit additional symptoms of concern. It was cursory, at best.

Trump’s blood pressure and labs were all in the normal range, though his blood glucose, if fasting, was concerning for prediabetes. This would have been a great opportunity for Oz to educate his audience about the links between obesity, diabetes, heart attack, stroke, kidney and liver disease and various other medical conditions. Absent from Dr Harold Bornstein’s report on Trump’s health was a complete blood count and kidney function tests, labs most doctors would order before checking liver and thyroid function tests or a testosterone level. Absent signs or symptoms of disease, it’s unclear that Trump needed some of the tests he’s had, such as the EKG, chest x-ray and echocardiogram.

As for Clinton, her blood pressure was even lower than Trump’s and both have cholesterol levels in the normal range. Clinton’s calcium score – the higher the number, the higher the risk of heart attack – was zero in contrast to Trump’s 98. In other words, her risk of a heart attack is very low while he’s at moderate risk. Clinton has had a normal breast cancer screening, but there’s no mention of her having colonoscopies. Trump’s doctor reports he last had a normal colonoscopy in 2013.

Still, neither candidate has released anything close to their complete medical records. Releasing a letter or two from one’s personal doctor, as Trump had prior to his Dr Oz appearance, doesn’t come close to releasing complete medical records. Nowhere in Bornstein’s letter about Trump’s health did he mention anything about the bone spurs that supposedly sidelined him during the Vietnam Conflict. Trump, who described sex in the 1980s as his own “personal Vietnam,” must have taken tests for sexually transmitted diseases over the years. Trump reports having been hospitalized once for an appendectomy at age 11, but we haven’t seen those records.

As for Hillary Clinton – who wasn’t involved in the Dr Oz broadcast but whose health status became part of the news cycle when she was diagnosed with pneumonia – where are the records of her healthy child visits and childhood vaccinations? Of the prenatal care, including STD tests, she received when pregnant with Chelsea? In recent years, Clinton has suffered from falls, which could all be due to exhaustion or dehydration, but could also be a sign of an abnormal heart rhythm or other heart condition. And we don’t know why she takes coumadin, a blood thinner.

And does the public need full access to a candidate’s medical records to determine if candidate is healthy enough to serve as Commander in Chief? Or is this just to satisfy our own prurient interests?

What is relevant is whether either candidate has a chronic or life-threatening medical condition that would prevent them from doing their job or would lead to their untimely death while still in office.

We all get the occasional cough or cold. Sick with intestinal flu, Former President George HW Bush famously vomited and collapsed at a state dinner given in his honor at the home of Japanese Prime Minister. It was embarrassing, but he recovered. What I want to know is what Trump’s going to do to avoid developing full-blown diabetes or having a heart attack, and how Clinton’s going to take better care of herself so she doesn’t drive herself to the point of exhaustion.

The conspiracy theories about Clinton’s health are really a demand for transparency, but neither Trump nor Clinton is offering anything close to that. Both candidates have long relationships with their personal physicians. Doctors want to help their patients and may be biased, whether consciously or not, in reporting on their health when so much is at stake.

The best way to give voters the answers they need isn’t a data dump of thousands of pages of medical records. Even then, those records may not be complete and still need to be interpreted in the context of an up-to-date interview and physical exam. Early in the campaign, candidates should submit to examination by objective third party physicians – whether they be former Surgeon Generals or the attending physician for Congress – so that they are all held to the same standards.

We need a system that respects patient privacy, even when those patients are our presidential candidates, while answering voters’ reasonable questions about a candidate’s ability to serve.

Young children copy parents" sugary drinks habits, study suggests

Children aged four to eight whose parents regularly consume fizzy drinks are almost three times as likely to drink them as other children their age whose parents don’t, research suggests.

The Drink as I Do report suggests that young children copy the drinking behaviour of their parents, whatever they are consuming, but that the effect is most worrying when it comes to consumption of beverages linked to health problems.

Four- to eight-year-olds whose parents drank fizzy drinks were 192% more likely to consume them than other children their age. They were more than twice as likely (115%) to drink fruit juices if their parents consumed those and more than six times as likely (529%) to have smoothies if their parents indulged.

The report was compiled by Emma Derbyshire, children’s nutrition adviser to the Natural Hydration Council, a not-for-profit organisation backed by producers of bottled water.

She said:“Clearly children emulate their parents. With water, children were only drinking about three cups a day when they should be drinking between five and eight glasses. They’re under-consuming water in favour of calorific drinks. It’s a concern given problems with obesity and tooth decay. The thing is [for parents] not just to tell children to drink water but to do it themselves and ideally be seen to enjoy it.”

The report, based on responses from 1,000 parents and, in each case, one of their children, found that 37% of children do not drink water on any given day but this fell to13% when their parents drank water often.

Where parents drank squash, their children were 1.4 times more likely to drink them than other children and the “copycat” effect was even more pronounced for sports drinks (11 times more likely), although for the latter the small sample size means it should be treated with caution.

Children in the UK consume three times more sugar than is recommended, and soft drinks are the biggest source, accounting for 29% of the sugar intake of 11- to 18-year-olds and 16% for younger children. After concerns about the impact this is having on children’s health, a two-tier sugary drinks tax is to come into force next year based on the level of sugar per 100ml in a soft beverage.

Public Health England’s Eatwell guide, which was published earlier this year, advises that intakes of fruit juice and/or smoothies should be limited to a total of 150ml a day as they are a source of excess sugars.

Psychologist Emma Kenny, who is backing the report, said: “It’s that ‘do as I say not do as I do culture’. If you’re giving children water and drinking fizzy drinks, it’s natural for them to want to taste your drink and the moment the child can get their hands on a fizzy drink they will do so. You’re not going to stop them having other drinks but the tastes they form early on are compelling.”

5 Habits You Probably Didn’t Know Are Bad For Your Eyes

Whether you realize it or not, some of your regular habits and best-loved pastimes could be wreaking havoc on your eyes. Don’t hurt your eyesight with bad habits day in and day out. Eliminate five behaviors to keep your vision healthy.

Looking at Your Smartphone All Day

Do your eyes hurt by the end of the day? It could be because you’ve spent hours reading teeny tiny text on your smartphone. You may also notice that your vision is blurry, your eyes are dry and you’re both dizzy and nauseous. Aim to break from your phone at least every 20 minutes. If you read on your phone a lot, adjust the font so that it’s bigger.

Forgetting Your Sunglasses at Home

Not only do sunglasses give you extra style points, but they also provide much-needed protection for your eyes. The harmful UV and HEV rays from the sun can damage your eyes and eyelids (not to mention give you crow’s feet). Prevent issues like cataracts by grabbing your favorite pair of shades before leaving the house. Keep an extra pair in your car if you regularly forget them.

Your pool-peeing habits are pissing off the American Chemical Society

Do you love the smell of a chlorinated pool in the summertime? Unfortunately, urine for a surprise.

That nostalgia-inspiring aroma is actually a result of disinfection byproducts, or DBPs, created when people skip the bathroom and pee in the pool – and those DBPs are not good for you.

A new video produced by the American Chemical Society explains that when urine and other organic matter mix with the disinfectants we use in pools, they set off chemical reactions that produce compounds such as cyanogen chloride, chloroform, dichloramine, trichloramine and bromoform – AKA the unwanted DBPs.

[embedded content]

Chloramines can cause irritation to the skin, eyes and respiratory tract, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

DBPs are also the result of dirt, sweat and lotion that swimmers bring into the pool, but urine accounts for about half of them, which is why the video calls using a toilet before diving in “your civic duty”.

The tricky art of pool chemistry has made international headlines this summer, thanks to the startling metamorphosis of Rio’s Olympic diving pool from azure to emerald.

Though Olympics officials have attributed the murky green waters to the accidental introduction of 160 liters of hydrogen peroxide into the pool, chances are there was a good amount of urine in there as well.

Seventeen percent of Americans admit to peeing in the pool, according to a 2009 survey by Water Quality and Health Council, but among elite athletes the number is probably much higher.

“Nearly 100% of elite competitive swimmers pee in the pool. Regularly,” Carly Geehr, a former member of the US swimming national team, wrote on Quora in 2012.

“Some deny it, some proudly embrace it, but everyone does.”

Among those in the latter camp are Olympians Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte.

In 2012, Lochte responded to a question about peeing in the pool, saying: “Of course. We always do. I think there’s just something about getting into chlorine water that you just automatically go.”

Lochte went on to admit that he had befouled the pool during the London Olympics: “Not during the races, but I sure did before in warm-up.”

Phelps subsequently backed up his sometime rival, telling the Telegraph: “I think everybody pees in the pool. It’s kind of a normal thing to do for swimmers. When we’re in the water for two hours, we don’t really get out to pee.”

Such brazen pee-havior is unwelcome to Ernest R Blatchley III, a professor of engineering at Purdue University who studies DBPs.

“High-profile swimmers have a real opportunity to take a position of leadership and responsibility,” he told Chemical & Engineering News. The scientist urged swimmers “to practice commonsense hygiene”.

The mobile phone in your pocket utilized to only be ready to make calls. This marvel of technological innovation delivers an remarkable capability for connectivity. Personally it is also reducing the good quality of my lifestyle, and last 12 months I made a decision to do one thing about it.

Up coming week will mark the 1-year anniversary of my digital vacation, a two-week sabbatical from the distractions of my mobile phone. Following Baratunde Thurston’s lead, I left the distractions behind and utilized my cellphone only to get directions, contact people, and uncover places to eat. (His wonderful journey is right here on Quickly Company)

Receiving your cellphone prepped for this type of journey is a chore: it demands changing the way you interact with your phone. The default settings on your cellphone are made to grab your interest. Little numbers appearing in the corner of your icons alert you to “important” messages waiting, push notifications alert you to exercise and tones signal upcoming appointments.

By altering my phone’s idle communication with me, I began a yr of new behaviors and an improved existence.
