Ransomware attacks: 29,000 infections in China as working week begins - live updates

[unable to retrieve full-text content]

Businesses and NHS brace for fresh impact as minister blames Labour for UK’s cyber-security failings

  • Did you pay money as a victim of ransomware?

Russia had nothing to do with a massive global cyberattack, President Vladimir Putin said Monday, criticising the US intelligence community for creating the original software, AFP reports.

“As for the source of these threats, Microsoft’s leadership stated this directly, they said the source of the virus was the special services of the United States,” Putin said.

Three hospitals in Ireland have been targeted by the cyber attack.

Health chiefs blocked external communication to servers until Wednesday to stop the spread of the “ransomware” virus as officials confirmed that up to 20 computers had been affected.

The health secretary, Jeremy Hunt, has broken his silence on the cyber- attacks after pressure to comment.

He said there has not been a second wave of cyber attacks after the NHS was struck by ransomware attacks on Friday, PA reports.

Thousands of NHS computers were still using the old Windows XP operating system, the government has revealed, though a Number 10 spokesman insisted other Windows’ systems were also affected.

The prime minister’s spokesman said the NHS had updated the vast majority of its systems but just under 5% were still operating Windows XP.

Health trusts across England were sent details of an IT security patch that would have protected them from the crippling ransomware attack, NHS Digital said.

NHS Digital, the arms-length body of the Department of Health that provides information, data and IT systems for the NHS, said it had made health trusts aware last month of IT protection that could have prevented the attack.

The French government cyber security agency ANSII knows of “fewer than 10” French companies that have fallen victim to a global hacking attack that hit car factories, hospitals and other organisations in about 100 countries, an ANSII spokesman said on Monday.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman has defended health secretary Jeremy Hunt’s lack of public statements or appearances since the cyberattack on Friday.

“This is an international cyber crime, committed on an unprecedented scale.

Theresa May has rejected claims the government ignored warnings the NHS was vulnerable to a possible cyber security attack.

The Prime Minister said warnings had been given to hospital trusts.

If you paid money as a victim of ransomware we’d like to hear from you. How much were you asked to pay? Why did you decide to pay the ransom? What happened afterwards? We’d also like to hear the experiences of those who paid in other recent attacks.
You can share your stories with us – anonymously if you wish – by filling in our form here.

Few major problems have been reported in India with the hea of the government response team saying “everything seems to be normal, so far”, AP reports.

Experts estimated 5% of affected computers were in India, with the Computer Emergency Response Team of India issuing a red-colored “critical alert”.

Microsoft’s top lawyer has called on governments around the world to treat the international cyber attack as a “wake-up call” as he laid part of the blame at the door of the US administration, PA reports.

Brad Smith, the technology firm’s president and chief legal officer, criticised US intelligence agencies the CIA and the National Security Agency (NSA) for “stockpiling” software code which could be exploited by hackers.

“Hundreds of thousands” of Chinese computers at nearly 30,000 institutions including government agencies have been hit by the global ransomware attack, a leading Chinese security-software provider has said.

The enterprise-security division of Qihoo 360, one of China’s leading suppliers of anti-virus software, said 29,372 institutions ranging from government offices to universities, ATMs and hospitals had been “infected” by the outbreak as of late Saturday, AFP reports.

Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, NHS Blackpool Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and NHS Fylde and Wyre CCG are still experiencing some IT problems.

They said services are open and operating “as best as possible” but asked patients only to attend A&E in life-threatening and urgent cases.

The Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals Trust reported their IT system had not been attacked and was operating normally.

Likewise the Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs hospitals in Manchester, Oldham and Rochdale, said they had not been affected by the attack but had taken precautionary measures to protect their IT systems.

The Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust said patient safety is being “maintained” but difficulties are continuing.

Patients scheduled to have operations today have been asked not to attend hospital unless they have been contacted directly.

European governments and companies appeared early Monday to have avoided further fallout from a crippling global cyberattack, the police agency Europol said.

“The number of victims appears not to have gone up and so far the situation seems stable in Europe, which is a success,” senior spokesman for Europol, Jan Op Gen Oorth told AFP.

No patient data has been lost in the ransomware attack on Scottish NHS computer systems, Nicola Sturgeon has said.

Eleven health boards as well as NHS National Services and the Scottish Ambulance Service were affected Friday’s attack, PA reports.

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, arriving in Brussels for a meeting of EU foreign ministers, said the cyber-threat was not on the agenda.

He said: “Cyber-security is a huge issue for all of us in all our countries.

Three days on from the initial outbreak, fewer than a hundred victims of the WeCry malware appear to have given in and paid the ransom, according to analysis of the two bitcoin addresses to which the software demanded payment.

In order to restore encrypted files, the malware demands a payment of $ 300 in the cryptocurrency, sent to one of two addresses hardcoded into the software. Yet the contents of the addresses, which like all bitcoin wallets are publicly viewable, shows just under 14 bitcoin has been sent to them in total. At current exchange rates, that is worth slightly under $ 25,000, suggesting just 82 victims have paid the ransom.

Jeremy Hunt was warned last summer that the NHS was failing to prioritise cybersecurity and continued to use obsolete computer systems, the Times reported.

The Care Quality Commission and Dame Fiona Caldicott, the national data guardian, wrote to the health secretary to point out a worrying “lack of understanding of security issues” and that “the external cyberthreat is becoming a bigger consideration”.

York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, which was hit by the attack on Friday, said some out-patient appointments had been cancelled on Monday – especially at Selby War Memorial Hospital – but most were not affected.

The trust said bone scan appoints had been cancelled in Scarborough and in Selby: “All outpatient appointments are cancelled except blood-taking and MSK physiotherapy.”

The British cybersecurity researcher described as an “accidental hero” for halting the global spread of the ransomware attack has spoken of his fears for his safety after a number of media outlets revealed his identity.

The 22-year-old, who tweets as @malwaretechblog, told the MailOnline: “In future someone might want to retaliate – they could find my identity within seconds.

Meanwhile in Japan, AP reports the ransomware attack hit computers at 600 locations but appeared to cause no major problems as Japanese started their workday Monday even as the attack caused chaos elsewhere.

Nissan Motor Co. confirmed some units had been targeted, but there was no major impact on its business.

As the UK wakes up on Monday braced for fresh impact as NHS returns to work, Chinese state media say more than 29,000 institutions across China have been infected by the global “ransomware” cyberattack, AP reports.

Xinhua News Agency reports that by Saturday evening, 29,372 institutions had been infected along with hundreds of thousands of devices. It cited the Threat Intelligence Center of Qihoo 360, a Chinese internet security services company.

Welcome to live coverage of the fallout from last Friday’s ransomware attack.

Ben Wallace, UK security minister has been on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme defending its record on investment in cyber-security.

Popularity of sushi has brought rise in parasitic infections, warn doctors

From nigiri to temaki, sushi has boomed in popularity in the west, but now doctors are warning of a less appetising trend: a rise in parasitic infections.

A team of doctors from Portugal raised concerns after a 32-year old man was admitted to hospital complaining of pain in his abdomen just below his ribs, vomiting and had a slight fever, all of which had lasted for a week.

An endoscopy soon revealed the culprit: the larvae of a type of parasitic worm from the genus Anisakis. The doctors note that the condition, known as anisakiasis, is caused by eating undercooked or raw fish or seafood that has been contaminated: indeed, questioning of the patient revealed that he had recently eaten sushi.

After the larva was removed the man rapidly recovered, say the medics.

Writing in the journal BMJ Case reports, the team warn that with sushi in vogue in the west, awareness of anisakiasis is growing.

“Most of the cases were described in Japan due to food habits; however, it has been increasingly recognised in western countries,” the authors write, pointing to a Spanish study that reported 25 cases of the condition over a three year period from 1999 to 2002, with all patients having eating raw anchovies, as well as Italian research which flagged both anchovies and sushi as routes by which individuals could become infected.

The Italian study added that medical professionals should suspect the condition should patients complain of severe abdominal pain after eating raw fish, pointing out that “no effective pharmacological treatment is able to kill the larvae once eaten”.

Indeed, as the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention notes, “The treatment for anisakiasis may require removal of the worm from the body by endoscopy or surgery.”

The authors of the latest report add that besides the symptoms shown in the Portuguese case, the condition can also trigger a host of other symptoms including severe allergic reaction, as well as complications such as digestive bleeding, bowel obstruction and peritonitis.

The Food Standards Agency noted that raw fish occasionally contain parasitic larvae, but said that under European food hygiene legislation fish that is to be eaten raw should be frozen before it is sold to consumers to ensure any parasites have been killed.

The FSA added that fish and meat should always be cooked properly according to the producer’s instructions, but offered a few tips to those planning to make their own sushi.

“If you do choose to make your own sushi from fish at home, ensure you follow a reputable recipe,” the FSA advised. “If wild fish are to be eaten raw or lightly cooked, ensure that all parts, especially the thickest part, have been frozen for at least four days in a domestic freezer at -15C or colder. This will ensure that any undetected Anisakis larvae are killed.”

Antibiotics leave children "more likely to contract drug-resistant infections"

Children are at substantially increased risk of contracting drug-resistant infections in the months after taking a course of antibiotics, a leading public health official has warned.

Paul Cosford, medical director at Public Health England, told MPs on Wednesday that children are 12 times more likely to contract drug-resistant infections in the three months after being prescribed antibiotics, suggesting that their unnecessary use poses a direct risk to individual patients as well as a broader threat to society as a whole.

“We’ve got good evidence that if you or I have a course of antibiotics now, within three months our risk is three times to get a resistant infection of some sort because we’ve had the antibiotics affecting all the organisms in our bodies,” he told the Science and Technology Select Committee. “If you’re a child you’re 12 times more likely to get a resistant infection in the three months after a course of antibiotics.”

He said the figures, based on two major reviews, highlighted the need to continue driving down our reliance on the drugs. “There is a growing body of evidence that taking antibiotics makes it more likely that your next infection will be a resistant one, so prudent use of these life-saving medicines is essential,” he told the Guardian.

The study cited by Cosford, in fact found that children who had urinary tract infections (cystitis) were 13.23 times as likely to have contracted drug-resistant strains if they had been given antibiotics in the previous six months.

In a previous survey, 90% of GPs said they come under pressure from patients to hand out the antibacterial medication, and 45% said they had done so knowing it would not help.

Mark Woolhouse, professor of infectious disease at the University of Edinburgh, said that the figures matched his qualitative experience from the clinic. “In hospitals you definitely do get patients who will get a string of different drug-resistant infections,” he said.

Antibiotics pose a risk of subsequent illness, he said, because the drugs do not uniquely target the infection, but also eradicate useful bacteria in the gut. “They change the ecology of the gut, a bit like using a pesticide in a rich woodland,” he said. In the ecological niche that opens up after a course of antibiotics, opportunistic infections can spring up.

“This comes with the proviso that people should follow their doctor’s advice,” he added. “Antibiotics are a good thing when prescribed correctly, but they can have longer-term disadvantages of all kinds.”

The committee heard that that overall Britain had made progress on reducing the use of antibiotics since the government asked the economist Jim O’Neill to produce a report on antimicrobial resistance two years ago.

Prescriptions of antibiotics fell by 7.3% in the financial year 2015-16 compared with the previous year, Cosford told the committee.

Farms are also on track to meet a Defra target for 2018 of reducing average antibiotic use on farms to 50mg of drug per 1kg of meat produced (56mg this year, compared to 62mg in 2014). The target is designed to combat the blanket use of antibiotics as a way of boosting the growth of livestock – particularly poultry and pigs.

Certain strains of drug resistant infections are decreasing, the committee heard, with only 800 cases of MRSA bloodstream infections last year, compared to 7,000 in 2003. “When we focus on specific infections that are causing a problem then we can be extremely successful,” said Cosford. However, a more worrying trend was the rise in drug resistant E coli strains, he said, mostly linked to urinary tract infections.

O’Neill said that the current government appeared “less passionate” about the issue than the previous administration. “There is interest, perhaps not with the same passion as with David Cameron,” he said. “The prime minister himself and the chancellor played an active role in international engagement on the issue. I have not seen this government talk about it anything like as much as the previous leadership did.”

He added that it was crucial for policy-makers to make international efforts now rather than waiting for the “scary outbreak of a crisis”.

“We need to stop treating these things like sweets,” O’Neill said. “We all need to be re-educated that these things aren’t a magical solution for as many things as people think.”

Weird But Amazing Natural Remedies for Vaginal Yeast Infections

Let’s just straight to the point here: yeast infections suck. There is nothing more irritating, uncomfortable, and frankly embarrassing than being plagued by this itchy, painful, itchy, discharge producing, itchy, smelly – and did I say itchy? – malady. We need remedies, fast.

Whether it is the result of antibiotic use or weakened immunity, the symptoms related to yeast infections are persistent and unbearable. As such, effective short and long term solutions need to be implemented straight away for relief and ongoing wellness.

Yeast infections and vaginal thrush occur due to the overgrowth of the fungus Candida Albicans. It is increasingly common, and indicative of unbalanced micro-flora in the vaginal area. Conventional medical advice would tell you to use a hydrocortisone cream to battle the side effects, but this is only a short term solution, and often loses its efficacy with repeated use.

There is no need to rely on pharmaceuticals to restore a healthy vaginal environment.  Safe and effective – if unconventional, and surprising – alternative therapies can and do work, while protecting your body from harsh, destabilizing chemicals.

With sincere empathy for my fellow sufferers, I’m pleased to present my honest-to-goodness, personally tested, highly recommended, weird but amazing natural remedies for battling yeast infections and intimidating the itch.

Eliminate with Essential Oil Remedies

The quickest and easiest method of dealing with such unpleasant side effects as inflammation, pain, or itching is the application of essential oils.

The two I’ve used to greatest effect are organic lavender and tea tree oils. Both are armed with anti-fungal properties are going to fight the overgrowth of the harmful yeast pathogens, while protecting the delicate balance of flora .

While there are dozens of essential oils on the market, choose pure, organic sources, of the highest quality to ensure best results.

In acute cases, this remedy offers almost immediate relief – and when you are at your sister’s wedding, scratching yourself into oblivion isn’t a viable option, so it’s always handy to have a back-up plan.

How to apply:

You can administer this oil remedy in a variety of ways according to preference.

Here are my top three:

  1. Oil application: mix 1-2 drops of either essential oil with ½ teaspoons of coconut oil. Apply to affected area. Using the oil technique has the added benefit of soothing and moisturizing the inflamed tissue.

  2. Water application: same as above, only dilute the essential oil(s) with water.

  3. Soaked tampon: make a mixture of 4-5 drops of essential oil to 2 tablespoons of water or melted coconut oil. Soak a tampon in the solution. Insert as per usual. Change twice daily till symptoms subside.

A word of warning: these oils are highly concentrated and extremely potent; careless or excessive use can have an adverse effect, so be sure to proceed with due caution.

Garlic Remedies

Raw garlic is an essential component to battling yeast infections. It can be used internally and externally, offering powerful anti-fungal, antiviral, and antibacterial properties, and is even shown to be effective against parasites.

While eating crushed raw garlic offers numerous health benefits, the following approach to dealing with yeast infections is more palatable, but does require a pioneering mindset.

Inserting whole cloves of garlic into your vagina may sound like homespun voodoo insanity – but that is exactly what I am proposing you do. I wouldn’t blame you for hitch-hiking away from this advice as soon as possible. However, I also wouldn’t suggest such an outlandish tactic if I couldn’t personally attest to the results.

After a single application, you will realize the power of this seemingly questionable, yet powerful, natural remedy. This anti-fungal treatment basically ensures that the bad bugs are going to get it in the neck, and your natural balance will quickly be restored.

How to apply:

Always use fresh, organic garlic. Start by slightly scoring the outside of the peeled clove – this will allow the release of beneficial properties, without it being too overpowering.

Then, string your clove onto a strong piece of thread with a sterile needle, leaving plenty of extra string at the bottom; this will effectively create a tampon-like device (and if you think of this whole exercise like an alternative tampon, it is not nearly so scary as you first thought).

If you are shy, start with one clove; you can work your way up to three or four as you become more confident.

Insert just as you would a tampon; gently, letting your anatomy guide you. The farther up you go, the more secure it will be. Later, when you are ready to remove it, tug the string and you’re done. See? You’re a pro already.

Change twice daily, until symptoms subside.

Worried about a stray clove getting lost in the worst possible place? Women have been terrified of tampons going amiss in their vaginal cavity for decades; the truth is, it can’t happen, and strange hippie garlic remedies are no exception.

If you do lose track of a clove, do not panic. It will naturally ease its way down and out in a day or two.

Probiotic Remedies

While you are busy killing off all the yeasty yoiks in town, it’s crucial that you strengthen your defenses with a steady stream of probiotics at the same time. This is going to ensure that you recover quickly, optimize your bacterial balance, improve immune function, and prevent re-infection.

Additionally, bug balance contributes to a top-notch brain function, hormone happiness, and a strong gut – so there’s more reason that ever to get your fair share.

How to Apply:

There are three primary ways in which you can use probiotics to your greatest advantage, which can be explored separately or in combination.

  1. Eat: With delicious options such as kefir, kombucha, and fermented vegetables becomingly increasingly popular, you can buy and make healthful foods and drinks that are bursting with friendly flora.

  2. Supplement: You can buy probiotic supplements online or over the counter in most health stores. Look for strains with saccharomyces boulardii, which actively eats harmful yeasts.

  3. Vaginally: you have a couple of options here –

    • You can apply a soothing coat of probiotic rich milk kefir or plain yogurt to the inflamed tissue, and wear a pad for continued relief.

    • You can soak a tampon in milk kefir or plain yogurt and insert it for internal relief.

    • You can insert a probiotic capsule vaginally – the deeper the better. Over the course of the day, the gelatin capsule will dissolve and release healing flora.

When battling an active infection, the first port of call is simply dealing with the crashing distraction of the red, raw, burning, itching, angry symptoms. Secondly, and most importantly, is supporting your body’s long term wellness.

There are two natural supplements that have seen me through the darkness of disaster many times. By turfing out the pests good and proper, taking this extra step will provide lasting harmony and vaginal health.

Capryllic Acid

This is a coconut derived fatty-acid does all the heavy lifting when it comes to ridding the raiders.

Dose up to ensure that the excessive yeast cells are not only weakened, but killed. Thoroughly eradicating these beasties using safe methods is just good biological business sense. Restoring a healthy balance of microorganisms after an infection is essential for continued harmony.

Start taking at the first sign of symptom onset, and continue taking according to the label for 3-4 days after subsidence.

Monolaurin

Monolaurin, also derived from coconut oil is marketed as an overall immune enhancer, but is essentially a bio-film disruptor: this means that the tough-to-crack exterior of the unwelcome invaders is compromised, and far easier to combat.

Tough dudes that run the yeast business will likely need a good, old fashioned talking-to, and this will be your best shot at winning the negotiations.

Non-toxic and safe for both short and long term use, it’s an essential component to keeping your vulva vital.

Combine it with the anti-fungal muscles of caprylic acid, and this dynamic-duo will knock out even the toughest villains.

These remedies are likely to challenge your medical preconceptions and biological barriers; that’s OK. It took me a while to feel comfortable using this weird and wonderful approach. But, woman to woman, I guarantee you can ditch the itch and rock on with real life in no time flat.

Millions at risk as deadly fungal infections acquire drug resistance

Scientists have warned that potentially deadly fungal infections are acquiring resistance to many of the medicines currently used to combat them. More than a million people die of fungal infections every year, including about 7,000 in the UK, and deaths are likely to increase as resistance continues to rise.

Researchers say the widespread use of fungicides on crops is one of the main causes of the rise in fungal resistance, which mirrors the rise of resistance to antibiotics used to treat bacterial infections in humans.

“There are close parallels between bacterial and fungal resistance, though the problems we face with the latter are particularly worrying,” said Prof Adilia Warris, a co-director of the newly opened Centre for Medical Mycology at Aberdeen University.

“There are more than 20 different classes of antibacterial agents. By contrast, there are only four classes of anti-fungal agents. Our armoury for dealing with deadly fungi is much smaller than the one we have for dealing with bacteria.

“We cannot afford to lose the few drugs we have – particularly as very little funding is being made available for research into fungi and fungal infections.”

Fungi cause a range of illnesses – such as thrush, athlete’s foot and dandruff – that can be treated relatively easily.

Other illnesses have more serious consequences. Individuals who are receiving bone marrow transplants and who are immune-suppressed can die of aspergillus and candida fungi infections, for example.

Another example of their grim potential was highlighted last week when doctors reported that a bagpipe player had died because deadly fungi had infected his pipes.

The total global number of fungal deaths is about the same as the number of deaths from malaria

“Fungi are everywhere,” said Prof Gordon Brown, head of the Aberdeen mycology centre.

“We breathe in more than 100 spores of aspergillus every day. Normally our immune systems mop them up but, when our disease defences are compromised – for example, during cancer treatments or after traumatic injuries – they lose the ability to fight back.

“Fungi can spread through patients’ bodies and into their spines and brains. Patients who would otherwise survive treatments are dying every year from such infections.”

This point was also stressed by Prof Neil Gow, another Aberdeen researcher. “Essentially fatal fungal infections are diseases of the diseased,” he said.

In addition, premature babies and patients with the inherited condition cystic fibrosis are also vulnerable.

However, the problem is even worse in developing countries. In sub-Saharan nations, where millions are infected with HIV – which causes severe depletion of patients’ immune systems – infections with cryptococcus and pneumocystis fungi account for more than half a million deaths a year.

“The total global number of fungal deaths is about the same as the number of deaths from malaria but the amount that is spent on fungal infection research is only a fraction of the cash that goes on malaria research,” added Gow.

A vaccine that could protect against fungal disease has yet to be developed, while the rise of resistance to the class of medicines known as azole drugs is causing alarm among doctors.

Recent reports from the US and Europe indicate that resistance to azole drugs is increasing in both aspergillus and candida fungi. The widespread use of agricultural fungicides to protect crops and their use in some paints and coatings has been linked to the rise of this resistance.

Doctors have recently uncovered another worrying development: outbreaks of fungal infections – mainly cryptococcus – that have appeared in previously healthy people. In one outbreak, in the northwest US, dozens of people died.

In the wake of these developments, it was decided by Britain’s Medical Research Council to open its Aberdeen mycology centre earlier this year.

It will employ experts in the field to gain new understanding of how fungi move into the human body and survive there. It will also work on the development of new drugs and tests for pinpointing specific fungi that are infecting patients.

“Fungal infections are going to be an increasing problem in coming years and we need to develop the best defences,” said Brown. “We aim to do that here.”

Daily life coach: how can I avoid urinary tract infections?

Final year’s RYA Suzuki Dinghy Demonstrate, featured a “Boat Fit Bootcamp”, presented by Matt McGovern, a physiotherapist. He emphasised the significance of constantly warming up, and advisable a coaching program that integrated one and two-legged squats, lunges, core plank exercises, abdominal curl-ups and press-ups.

Generally speaking, it is greatest to operate on all the distinct elements of fitness:you will advantage from a robust heart, lungs and muscles that are capable of sustaining prolonged stretches of physical exercise. Versatility is important as well – as nicely as bettering your stability, co-ordination and agility, it has lots of benefits for your total overall health on dry land. I would propose you do all-above bodywork inside a circuit class, or a group barbell class such as Bodypump. If you are a member of a fitness center, you could do squats whilst simultaneously pulling at a stack of heavy weights. This will give you good sailing-distinct power and balance.

Michael Blackburn, the sport-scientist writer of Sail Fitness and Training (and a former world champion sailor), suggests an interesting gymnasium schedule, that entails alternately doing work out on the bike and the rowing machine for an hour with 20 minutes of cycling, followed by six minutes of “sheeting” – sitting on a rowing machine with straight legs, pulling the rowing handle with every single arm. The idea is that this simulates a real race: the cycling sessions are the “beats”, the rowing workouts are the “reaches”.

You can, of program, do exercise routines at residence, also, incorporating a circuit with lunges, squats, wall sitting, press-ups, curl-ups, variations on the plank and dumbbell workout routines.

Once you have established what sort of sailing you are going to be performing, I advise hunting out for a copy of Psychological and Bodily Fitness for Sailing by Beggs, Derbyshire and Whitmore (amazon.co.united kingdom) it provides flexibility, circuit and bodyweight-instruction exercise routines and classifies which are appropriate for different varieties of sailors: windsurfers, hikers, trapezers and keelboat crews.

TROUBLED WATERS

Q: Is there any cure for standard urinary tract infections? I have had one particular soon after the other, for a lengthy time, and repeated coursesof antibiotics.

A: Dr Dan Rutherford writes

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is common in grownup girls, particularly throughout pregnancy. It is considerably much less common in grownup men.

One of the major difficulties is defining what one truly indicates by infection. Bacteria are frequently located in the urine in girls over 65 and if they are leading to no symptoms they do not require treatment method. In a younger woman, the diagnosis can be made on the symptoms alone if these are sufficiently normal, i.e. soreness on passing urine, increased frequency, a want to get to the lavatory in a hurry and blood in the urine. Urine samples are frequently sent to the lab to seem for bacteria but really make a big difference to the management of UTI only when there are quite number of signs and symptoms and the diagnosis is doubtful.

Loin pain and fever suggest infection in the upper component of the urinary technique, i.e. the kidneys and tubes leading to the bladder and require far more intensive therapy. Most UTI includes only the bladder and this will be what you have been acquiring.

Cranberry goods (juice, tablets, capsules) are of tiny support for the duration of the acute infection, but taken long-term they are almost as excellent as prolonged antibiotics in lowering the chance of repeated infection. No a single is aware of the very best dose but a when-every day capsule of 200mg cranberry extract is likely to be about correct. If you get other prescriptions medicines verify with your pharmacist that cranberry will not clash with these.

Deliberately passing urine after intercourse, and perhaps also taking a single dose of antibiotic, can assist some females. Brief, three-day programs of antibiotics are ample for UTI.

Longer-term antibiotic treatment is greatest averted if possible, but for some women plagued by repeated infection is the only technique that functions. For a helpful summary see indicator.ac.united kingdom/pdf/pat88.pdf.

A NOSE FOR PROTEIN

Q: I’ve go through that protein increases mucus in the sinuses, and certainly it looks to exacerbate my rhinitis. My sinuses become irritated when I swap my normal rice milk for soya or almond milks (I’m vegan). But I want some protein in my diet plan. Do you consider protein can worsen rhinitis? What do you advocate I do?

A: Sara Stanner writes:

All milks include some protein and, as you say, protein is essential. It is likely to be the sort of protein, rather than protein itself, that is triggering your signs. Rhinitis (irritation of the nose), which triggers a runny nose or nasal congestion and sneezing, is a typical symptom of allergic reactions. An allergy is a response by the body’s immune program to some thing (an allergen) that is otherwise harmless.

Most allergens are proteins, which includes meals proteins this kind of as these located in nuts, eggs, milk or fish. If you suspect you have an allergy, you ought to discuss this with your GP who will refer you for tests to identify which allergens might be leading to your problem. You may possibly be tested not just for meals but other possible culprits this kind of as residence dust mites or tree and grass pollens.

There is a condition known as oral allergy syndrome (or pollen food syndrome) which can happen in folks who are allergic to pollen from trees, grasses or weeds. These pollens contain proteins of comparable construction to these existing in a lot of fruits, veggies and nuts which can be recognised by the immune method of a hay fever sufferer and trigger an allergic reaction.

The problem generally influences hay fever sufferers but can occur in people who do not have hay fever but check good to pollens. Some individuals are impacted by only 1 or two meals, other individuals react to a broad selection of foods – the most widespread are apples, peaches, kiwis, hazelnuts, almonds and soya. If you think you could be reacting in this way talk with your GP who will refer you to an allergist. This will guarantee you have the right diagnosis and proper remedy.

Infections could worsen dementia

A staff of researchers, led by Prof Hugh Perry, studied irritation in mice that produce a neurodegenerative ailment which brings about progressive nerve cell injury in the brain comparable to that observed in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

They identified that early in the condition, immune cells attempt to defend nerve cells from harm. But if mice had an infection at the same time, the brain became much more inflamed, worsening condition.

Prof Hugh Perry, Professor of Experimental Neuropathology, explained: “The findings mirror what we are observing in individuals with Alzheimer’s illness in the clinic. We have identified proof that individuals with Alzheimer’s who have systemic infections, such as chest or urine infections, are more very likely to have more quickly decline in memory and pondering and much more severe signs.”

Researchers said the findings could offer a way to discover remedies to tackle inflmamation of the brain, as a way of slowing down the illness.

Prof Perry stated: “We are now seeking at whether or not our findings could give a new way-in to creating therapies to modify this altered immune response and the communication among peripheral irritation and primed immune cells in the brain. If this procedure is key to driving diseases like Alzheimer’s, then maintaining it in check could be a way to slow down the condition in folks.”

New Study Shows That Widespread Ache Relievers Battle Bacterial Infections

Potentially enormous news is simmering in the planet of infectious disease treatment. Researchers publishing in the journal Chemistry and Biology have identified that typical anti-inflammatory ache relievers could be a new weapon in the battle against antibiotic-resistant bacteria—ominously acknowledged as “superbugs.”

Typical antibiotics, like penicillin and amoxicillin, are targeted poisons designed to kill different varieties of bacteria that make us sick. Some antibiotics attain this by destroying the bacterium’s ability to reproduce, other folks by interfering with the potential to flip blood glucose into power, and still other folks by rupturing bacterial cell walls.

While genius medicines, the problem with antibiotics is that bacteria at some point mutate all around their effects. When that transpires, a new strain of antibiotic-resistant bacteria emerges, such as MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), resulting in tenacious infections that are difficult and occasionally unattainable to treat. Many epidemiologists think that chronic overuse of antibiotics is spawning these superbugs.

The most recent analysis displays that widespread non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (greater acknowledged as NSAIDs) act on bacteria in a way that is completely distinct than antibiotics—by binding to a particular protein in bacteria known as the DNA Clamp, a key to bacterial multiplication.

“We identified that some anti-inflammatory medication used in human and veterinary medicine have weak antibiotic action and that they exert this secondary exercise by preventing bacteria from copying their DNA, which they need to do in order to multiply,” explains senior author Dr. Aaron Oakley of the University of Wollongong, in Australia.

The NSAIDs examined in this review had been bromofenac (utilized to treat eye discomfort connected to cataracts), carprofen and vedaprofen (both utilised by veterinarians to treat pain in canines and horses).  The review did not contain the most widespread NSAIDs, this kind of as ibuprofen, naproxen and aspirin, but it is possible that these medication could have a comparable result.

All NSAIDs decrease pain and irritation by blocking enzymes called Cox-one and Cox-two that make chemical compounds known as prostaglandins. When we’re injured, prostaglandins are released by the damaged tissue creating swelling and intensification of nerve signals in the injured spot (commonly known as ache). By blocking Cox-one and Cox-2, NSAIDs reduce prostaglandin’s effects.

For reasons that aren’t nevertheless clear, it appears that NSAIDs also act as blockers of the bacterial DNA Clamp, at least marginally. If these effects can be harnessed and amplified, widespread soreness relievers could ultimately grow to be a silver bullet in the fight towards superbugs.

“The reality that the bacteria-killing result of the anti-inflammatory drugs is different from standard medicines means that the NSAIDS could be created into new types of antibiotics that are efficient against so-known as superbugs,” says Dr. Oakley. “This is essential due to the fact the superbugs have grow to be resistant to many—and in some situations most—of the available antibiotics.”

Really do not run out to stock up on NSAIDs just however. This review is just the begin of what will most likely be a lengthy round of study into how these drugs have an effect on bacteria, and presently there is no solid scientific ground for trying to deal with bacterial infections with NSAIDs—although they are frequently effective at reducing fever linked with infections.

Getting stated that, this is fascinating research with terrific promise in the ever-intensifying war against the superbugs.

The research was published on the internet in the Cell Press journal Chemistry and Biology.

Why "super honey" is the bees knees for wounds and infections | Rachel Masker

The healing powers of honey have been identified about for 1000′s of years. But Surgihoney, whose normal antibacterial properties have been boosted, is proving hugely efficient at treating contaminated wounds and superbugs.

The honey is believed to perform by killing the bugs, removing dead tissue and pus, and then delivering a moisture barrier as effectively as nearby nutrition.

Honey contains vitamins, minerals, enzymes and sugars – all of which assist in the healing of wounds. Manuka is typically regarded as the most potent honey, but it relies upon nectar from a specific tree in New Zealand, limiting its supply.

That’s precisely the issue which has been solved by the developers of Surgihoney. They have designed a merchandise that can be produced from natural honey from any floral supply. They hope it will in the end turn into a worldwide wound-care merchandise that will boost lives in poorer nations.

Lead researcher Dr Matthew Dryden, an NHS consultant microbiologist, is optimistic that the sterile, health care honey can revolutionise wound care all around the world, lessen the use of antibiotics and provide an different to harsh chemical antiseptics.

Surgihoney speeds the healing of tough-to-deal with leg and foot ulcers, stress sores, trauma injuries and contaminated surgical wounds, in accordance to the analysis. Potential benefits include significantly less soreness and fewer amputations.

Dryden says: “Surgihoney is active against all the bacteria we locate in soft tissue wounds. The essential further is that it kills the bugs but doesn’t harm the tissue. Honey is a wonderful organic medication.”

Surgihoney can even tackle wounds infected with strains of bacteria resistant to antibiotics, he says, such as MRSA, E coli and pseudomonas. He describes honey as “turbo-boosted”.

Surgihoney, stored in 10g sachets, is merely squeezed on to wounds and dressed with gauze. Pilot trials (pdf) have been carried out in Hampshire in the Uk, Yei civil hospital in South Sudan, and Vailola hospital in Tonga.

Dryden was lead writer in a research that concludes: “As a wound remedy in the tropics, [Surgihoney] is an excellent, minimal-technological innovation answer which is easily stored, applied and ought to be cost-efficient.” And unlike a lot more sophisticated medicines, it does not need to have to be refrigerated.

Just before the pilot trials, Dryden’s research staff at Winchester’s Royal Hampshire county hospital carried out laboratory experiments on bacteria gathered from contaminated wounds.

The outcomes, explained in detail to the Federation of Infection Societies in November, propose that Surgihoney is far better at beating bugs than other honeys examined, such as Manuka and a medical-grade honey named Medihoney, although equal to antiseptics, silver and iodine, which can be toxic to healing tissue.

A British nurse and wound care skilled, Jill Brooks, has pioneered the use of Surgihoney in Sodo hospital in south-west Ethopia and Kisubu hospital in Uganda, in which she volunteers many instances a year.

“All the outcomes I have observed have been good some have been extremely positive with quick healing of wounds,” says the former lead tissue viability nurse for the NHS in Oxfordshire.

The normal nearby therapy of washing wounds in a weak remedy of bleach has a big disadvantage, she says. “It is quite excellent at killing bugs but is a very harsh point to use as it destroys the very good tissue and can delay healing.”

The achievement of the pilot exams paves the way for a bigger, randomised manage trial.

Surgihoney is currently being produced by businessman Ian Staples, former managing director of Halfords, the motor add-ons chain. He owned a farm in Chile with beehives that made honey from the Ulmo tree. Soon after a negative harvest, he and his son, Stuart, commissioned scientists to create Surgihoney.

The honey has been accredited for use in the United kingdom as a wound-care dressing.
